Unrelated sports note — The Russian track and field team has been barred from the Brazil Olympics.

@Humboldtblue: The Rio games will be the best ever!
Humboldtblue
@JPL: And to think the Russians have the next World Cup.
I'll be Frank
I’m just back from Rio and it is actually pretty ready.

The only part I’m surprised by is that it’s only the Russian track & field team that drew a ban. The revelations about the Russian program were a good deal more widespread than that.

@Tissue Thin Pseudonym: Add to that the fact that WADA is as corrupt as any other international agency and that there is a case -pending in Spain about a Doctor and his bags of blood from a few dozen prominent athletes I think we can safely assume that top-level international competitions are rife with doping of some sort.
To be honest, I’m of the opinion that if an athlete can be given a substance or treatment to help them recover from an injury that same substance or treatment should be available for use by anyone. If HGH helps injury recovery times and it is used in a medical setting then why should it be banned for regular use?
We have always pretended that the major sports and the international competitions are “clean” because we want to believe that hard work and dedication combined with some innate athleticism and talent can take you to w gold medal or a world title. But who is really shocked when it’s revealed that a top athlete has been found using performance enhancers?
If they can cut a tendon from one part of a pitcher’s body and sew in onto his elbow to allow him to continue to pitch we can develop a more reasonable system for what substances are allowed for development, health, and training and which are not.

Croatian supporters do more harm to their team than any opponent.
SRW1
That had to be the dumbest way to jump for a header, and in the penalty box.
SRW1
Anybody any idea about the playing time?
Humboldtblue
Oh, and some England fans are holding a fundraiser to bring Raheem Sterling home from France so that he doesn’t hurt the team anymore.

Well, that was fun. Croatia will probably make it to the 2nd round anyway, though.

That was a strange one.
