Balloon Juice

Come for the politics, stay for the snark.

Not rolling over. fuck you, make me.

Imperialist aggressors must be defeated, or the whole world loses.

Never entrust democracy to any process that requires Republicans to act in good faith.

Give the craziest people you know everything they want and hope they don’t ask for more? Great plan.

“woke” is the new caravan.

Their freedom requires your slavery.

I might just take the rest of the day off and do even more nothing than usual.

Hi god, it’s us. Thanks a heap, you’re having a great week and it’s only Thursday!

The low info voters probably won’t even notice or remember by their next lap around the goldfish bowl.

Damn right I heard that as a threat.

We will not go quietly into the night; we will not vanish without a fight.

No offense, but this thread hasn’t been about you for quite a while.

Perhaps you mistook them for somebody who gives a damn.

… pundit janitors mopping up after the gop

Anyone who bans teaching American history has no right to shape America’s future.

Lick the third rail, it tastes like chocolate!

I have other things to bitch about but those will have to wait.

Whatever happens next week, the fight doesn’t end.

Why is it so hard for them to condemn hate?

The truth is, these are not very bright guys, and things got out of hand.

Everything is totally normal and fine!!!

Republicans: The threats are dire, but my tickets are non-refundable!

Since we are repeating ourselves, let me just say fuck that.

Shallow, uninformed, and lacking identity

BettyC referenced Secretary Clinton’s rally/speech today in NC, but indicated she couldn’t find the video. I’ve embedded it below. Below that I’ve embedded Donald Trump’s speech about Secretary Clinton this morning.

Secretary Clinton’s remarks begin at about the 25 minute mark:

Donald Trump’s being at about the 35 minute mark:

Well it seems that Trump has correctly read the dynamic of this election, which is that while people will never ever vote for him, they will happily, ecstatically even, vote against Hillary Clinton.

He’s going to go all in with the attacks, and it might work. He even called her out for “sniper fire,” which is probably the most egregious example of a bald-faced lie on her part. Sure, he lied and over-exaggerated on half of what he said, but the other half has some teeth to it.

Hillary’s only hope is if the election is a referendum on Donald Trump. If he turns it into a referendum on her, she will lose, big.

Trumps seems so…sedate. Weird. Doesn’t seem like much of a strategy, he’s not breaking any new ground, people who think Hilary is the antichrist are already supporting him, and I can’t see anyone else being convinced by that performance.

This is hilarious: For a while now, Jezebel has coined a new, floridly derogatory phrase for Trump just about every mention they make of him. Now someone has made a Chrome extension to substitute one of these phrases for ‘Donald Trump’ any time it appears on a number of news sites. Some examples from the Guardian:

Behind the scenes, in the largely invisible world of digital organizing on which modern presidential campaigns increasingly depend, Great Judgement-Haver is not merely lagging behind – he’s not on the map.

Technology is a key battleground in any election, and increasingly so. Shriveled Pinto Bean You Had to Pluck out of Your Chipotle Burrito Basket may rule Twitter, yet there is no evidence that the real estate billionaire is doing anything to build the more prosaic but essential digital fundraising and volunteering network that in no small part propelled Barack Obama to victory in both of his runs for the White House.

On the national stage, Man-Sized Sebaceous Cyst is vastly out-organized by Hillary Clinton with just 70 campaign staff to her 732. On Tuesday night, Adult Blobfish announced he had hired “several staff members to expand his campaign operations” including a new digital director, but that still leaves him lagging far behind.

I think this will improve my news reading experience significantly.

Also, did I hear correctly, that Trump was concerned that HRC’s actions made life harder for “millions of peaceful Muslims, people who just want to raise their families…”. Which reporter’s going to ask him to square that concern with the Muslim immigration ban, Muslims being profiled, and Muslims being expected to somehow ‘confess’ and point out which Muslims are ‘doing the terrorism’?? Should be exciting.

I’m telling you folks, Trump’s “pivot” is just to get him through the convention and prevent a revolt. Once he has the nom, he’s home free in his mind and he’ll do & say whatever he pleases. I couldn’t be happier in that regard.

Republicans have spent the past 25 years telling us about the criminal acts of the Clinton’s and have for that entire period cast Hillary as Lady Macbeth. It has been successful in as much as it has made republicans hate her and caused the media to question every word she says. During that time she has done nothing but thrive. Twice elected in her own right to the senate, come within a hairsbreadth of winning her parties nomination, served as a popular Secretary of State, and now win her parties nomination. She has done all this in the face of ceaseless attacks and a hostile media. The fact that Combover Caligula wishes to rehash all this shit does not change the fact that she has weathered this shit for 25 years. In spite of all that she is beating him, he can try and turn the focus onto her, but his ego will not let it stand, he will be the center of attention because he is a narcissist. The GOP and their media handmaidens have also spent the last eight years blaming Obama for the wreckage left behind by W and what was the result ? He was re-elected and his approval ratings are rising.
To the people who hate the democrats this speech was a home run, to normal people who see Hillary as just another politician with a typical politicians strengths and weaknesses. So if this is his plan to beat her, I say keep fucking that chicken. Rehashing and recycling bullshit does not shine the turd that is Donald Trump.

If Trump thinks he’s going to have success with the “sniper fire” criticism, he needs to actually get it right. It wasn’t a “lie” because she really did go to Tuzla and it was in fact a dangerous place. What it instead was was a wild exaggeration of a junior Senator who wanted to pretend that she had more foreign policy chops than she actually did at the time. And it was hilarious – there was a wonderful diary on the GOS about how Sinbad and Sheryl Crowe both got wasted while Hillary led the fight to safety. But Obama didn’t “attack” her on it – we Obama supporters merely made fun of it (royally!). And we didn’t vote against her because of it, we instead voted against her because she supported the authorization of the Iraq War. Since then, she’s been Secretary of State and actually flew into dangerous war zones in Kabul, Karachi, Baghdad, Tel Aviv and a whole bunch more – which Trump has obviously never done. (And, of course, she personally orchestrated the Honduran coup which resulted in so many deaths and refugees – wait!). And crucially, she negotiated the exit of our combat forces from Iraq. The point being – she isn’t a junior Senator anymore, she’s an accomplished world statesperson and she doesn’t need to wildly exaggerate anythiing. Trump and his trolls attacking her for it is like attacking Churchill for saying something stupid in 1913 – it’s out of context and has been eclipsed by real life since then.

I still reserve the right to make fun of her for making stupid statements (the “Nancy Reagan leading on AIDS in the 80’s” thing) when and if she ever does them but compared to a proto-Fascist who wants to deport 11 million people and ban people from entering the country on infantile illegal religious grounds and build a stupid wall in the middle of nowhere to address a non-existent problem, she’s clearly a preferable candidate no matter what she said 8 years ago about flying into Tuzla when she was FLOTUS.

JUST IN: GOP will attempt to end Dem’s sit-in and seize back House floor

NOT on camera of course…what is Speaker Ryan afraid of…I wonder…

House Republicans will attempt to wrest control of the House from Democrats staging a sit-in over gun control with a vote to override President Obama’s fiduciary rule.

“It will be loud and probably be noisy,” Rep. Charlie Dent (R-Pa.), part of Speaker Paul Ryan’s group of advisers, told reporters after House Republicans held a special meeting about how they should respond to the day-long Democratic sit-in.
“You might want to get in the gallery and watch the show,” Dent added.

NR still believes that if Bernie had the nomination, he would beat Trump. Fact is, Sanders is probably the only Dem candidate possible who would lose easily to Trump.
Sanders couldn’t get Dems to vote for him. He had to count on non-Dems to get any traction, many of them not even liberals or progressives, just people that don’t like Clinton.
And the fact is, despite everything you might read, he never was close to getting the nomination, mainly because he never had a good argument to convince people he was worth voting for. About the only thing he could say was Clinton was horrible, so vote for me.
My biggest fear come election day is that it is so obvious Clinton will win that some Dems will stay home, feeling their votes aren’t needed which will hurt down ticket races.

@Mnemosyne: @lamh36: This is what will happen, which is what I estimated earlier. They will cut all power, plus the A/C, and lock the chamber from the outside. Anyone inside will be in the dark completely with no way out. And no one will be allowed in. If that doesn’t work I expect they’ll have the Sergeant at Arms physically remove them.

ETA: And remember locked into the chamber means no access to restrooms. This could get ugly in terms of the optics. It could get uglier in terms of actual physical interactions. Remember, it is not illegal for members of Congress to assault and/or batter each other in the chamber. Though it hasn’t happened for a very long time. Some of the members of the Freedom Caucus do not seem to have a lot of impulse control…

It seems to me that NR comes here to dump a load of shit that is obviously GOP endorsed, industrial grade horse shit. I don’t care why he does it, I do fond it sad that people think they can argue with him. He is not like Unlimited Brinks Trucks R word in that you can’t even make fun of him. It would be so much better for all of us if we just talked around him. Sort of like having a dear friend with a 3 year old that just refuses to let mommy & daddy have a grown up conversation when they are fed, dry and exercised but still insist on interrupting. Just talk around him.

@Mnemosyne: @lamh36: I am well aware of his history and constantly impressed by it and him. I don’t think most members of the GOP Caucus really understand it or who he is – its not something they really get. I wrote earlier that Speaker Ryan was likely to be very, very angry over this. Congressman McDermott gave a speech that made it to Facebook during the sit in laying out that Speaker Ryan was going to (over) react badly.
    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QuNwSMvmFps

We will now see just how bad the reaction is and just how in or out of control the GOP Caucus is.

Here’s why this would never work for GOP…the Dems have John Lewis and many members of the caucus who are not new to sit-ins and protest demonstrations.

Who does the GOP caucus have? A bunch of ole white men and women, who if they did protest as a youth, have been so bought and sold to NRA and certain other entities, that the idea of a “sit-in” would never cross their minds. And what will they sit-in on, that has a large number of Americans in agreement?

@tybee: I think it was for when the Sergeant at Arms is empowered to, essentially, arrest members of the House, bring them to the chamber, in order for them to make up a quorum and take a vote. When that happens the Sergeant at Arms secures the chamber. What I don’t remember is whether when this happens the securing the chamber is fully ceremonial and the locks work from both directions or if once locked the doors can’t be opened. I’d like to believe its the latter, but I can’t recall if its not the former. So do not take my word for it!

I doubt that the Sargent at Arms could/would remove the Democratic members physically. You think there are enough fascists on his force to brutalize members of congress?

They know one day the Republicans will no longer be the majority, and then what, if they manhandle the Democratic members?

And if they do manhandle the Democratic members, there would be witnesses, video, and hospital records. That would be such good optics for the Republicans. It worked so well for Bull and his subordinates in Selma. They are members of Congress, who should put them out of their chamber?

    NR is getting pretty boring.

    Now the sit-in, that’s interesting.

It appears that Ryan’s clever plan to stop it is to try to hold votes late tonight on unrelated issues. I’m not sure why he thinks that will work, or that anyone will notice.
