Balloon Juice

Come for the politics, stay for the snark.

The words do not have to be perfect.

It’s the corruption, stupid.

Red lights blinking on democracy’s dashboard

Do not shrug your shoulders and accept the normalization of untruths.

You can’t attract Republican voters. You can only out organize them.

Peak wingnut was a lie.

Only Democrats have agency, apparently.

I’ve spoken to my cat about this, but it doesn’t seem to do any good.

Nancy smash is sick of your bullshit.

They traffic in fear. it is their only currency. if we are fearful, they are winning.

It may be funny to you motherfucker, but it’s not funny to me.

… pundit janitors mopping up after the GOP

Whoever he was, that guy was nuts.

He really is that stupid.

The cruelty is the point; the law be damned.

You don’t get to peddle hatred on saturday and offer condolences on sunday.

Accused of treason; bitches about the ratings. I am in awe.

No one could have predicted…

Thanks to your bullshit, we are now under siege.

Schmidt just says fuck it, opens a tea shop.

We cannot abandon the truth and remain a free nation.

Too often we hand the biggest microphones to the cynics and the critics who delight in declaring failure.

Their freedom requires your slavery.

Speaking of republicans, is there a way for a political party to declare intellectual bankruptcy?

In honor of the lack of order in the House of Representatives at this early hour, below are three clips of my favorite Speaker of the House of Parliamentary laying the smacketh down! I’m off to bed.

    Thanks Adam!

Soooo, what’s new with everybody? I had a wonderful evening of obsessively tweeting and also I cooked dinner at some point.

Well, I’ve been enjoying the speeches of the California delegation in the House. Especially Takano. Not bad at all for someone only on his second term.

eta I had a moment, much earlier in the evening, where I realized I’d neglected my eight-year old daughter’s education. When Zoe Lofgren came on I told her, that’s our Congresswomen. She replied, “I thought we were voting for Hillary Clinton.” So, yeah, I need to work on that whole Schoolhouse Rock thing.

@SoupCatcher: Aw, she’s eight, she’s got time! Keep up the good work! You should also tell her that ‘we’ aren’t voting for anybody since eight-year-olds don’t vote :P

@SoupCatcher: I love the “we”. What a cool kid.

Off to school. Hope the Dems are still sitting in and being (righteously) outrageous when I return in a few hours. Good on them.

I got a new iPhone at long last — I’ve been limping along on a 16GB 4S for years. It’s pretty and shiny and pink (because all of the other colors were sold out) and her name is Eliza.

But I do have to work in the morning, so I have to wander off to bed now. If anyone needs to tell the NRA troll to fuck off, here’s my list of mass shootings compiled by the LA Times.

Aw, thanks! We’re quite proud of her.

eta Oh, snap. Republicans figured out that social media exists.

Talk about a cognitive disconnect. Front page displaying a video from J. Geils Band. British history not my forte, but stand on fairly firm ground in positing that none of them are or have been Members of Parliament.

I watched some of the sit-in on C-Span and felt proud to be a Democrat. This was followed by phone calls from C-Span viewers about the sit-in, and I felt ashamed to be an American. It was like comments from a right-wing blog come to life. You don’t just read the stupid, you hear the stupid.

@Major Major Major Major: I think it was just some general “Stop doing that social media stuff we don’t understand.” But I tend to glaze over every time a Republican in a light-colored suit talks so I’m not sure; I just figure he is trying to sell me a car and I tune out.

I’ve been watching the coverage of the House on CNN and MSNBC, and I’ve lost count of the number of times I’ve heard John Lewis referred to as a ‘civil rights icon’. I’m not saying he isn’t, but it’s weird that the news media has settled on that specific term, ‘icon’. There are other terms that could fit – hero or legend or trailblazer, but no, it’s always ‘icon’. It’s as if Icon has become an official title, like Corporal or Governor.

The sit-in is some awesome shit. I am very happy for the attention brought to the need for votes on gun legislation, don’t get me wrong. Long overdue. However, I’m also really fucking pleased to see the sit-in overshadow Trump’s weak-ass speech yesterday. He was never going to get much traction out of it anyway, but in the face of everything else gong on, the non-Fox cable nets and beltway reporters in general seem to be giving it a collective “yawn/is that all he’s got?” response. The damn emails, Behghazi!!1!!!111!!, the Clinton Foundation…absent some new info they are rightly pretty bored with that shite.

This thing was/is well-executed all around.

@amk: I know, it’s really weird when the Libertarians start making more sense than the Republicans! Altho’ they have for some time now. I’d be cool with the Republicans imploding and the Libertarians becoming the new mainstream opposition party. At least they know how to make a proper argument!
