Just One More Canuck
Spain-Italy is up first
Randinho
@Just One More Canuck: Misread the schedule. It’s now fixed.

Hope England advances! If we lose, though, I know it will be a great thing for the little guy in football.
Do feel for the English announcers that have to deal with those Icelandic names. At some point they’ll probably just start calling out jersey numbers!
Paul in KY
Errr, belay that comment above.
Vamanos Espana!
SRW1
It’s a nice not to Iceland’s achievements that UEFA got Spain and Italy to open for Iceland’s gig.
ETA:
Repeat of the 4-0 from the last final very much in doubt. Italy on penalties, with three of their players binned for a second yellow.
Steeplejack
Is there bad weather there, or is my TV smudged?
scav
@Paul in KY: Not really, given the English variable pronunciation of the characters they use in family names (Tut tut, to be mislead by the spelling “St John” it’s sinjin you mannerless oaf)
SRW1
@Steeplejack:
Bad weather.
SRW1
I didn’t believe Italy would have that much Sturm und Drang in them.
Paul in KY
@scav: Another great joke broken on the rocks of reality…
The announcers have probably had a lot of practice with em.
Gin & Tonic
@Paul in KY:
Back in March I attended the World Track Cycling Championships in London and was amused when the announcer got to Wojciech Pszczolarski.
SRW1
Conte back in suit and tie. Impeccable display of Italian sense of fashion.
SRW1
1-0 Italy. Sharp change of strategy ahead.
Randinho
@Gin & Tonic: Here in Brazil many of the place names are indigenous in origin from the language of the Tupí indians.
One place name that drove me crazy for a little while was Itatiaia, which is pronounced e ta tee EYE ya. Another was the river by which my father-in-law had his farm:
Jequitinhonha, pronounced jay key chin NYO nha. Some of the names will be four or five syllables with the accent on the last syllable.
Paul in KY
@Gin & Tonic: Man, that 1st name is a doozy!
Paul in KY
@Randinho: Those are 2 tough ones, also. How do you pronounce ‘nha’?
Just like it’s spelled, I guess :-)
Randinho
@Paul in KY: Like this letter in Spanish: ñ, or the gn in Italian, kind of like nya. The word for dream in Italian is sogno and in Portuguese is sonho, but the pronunciatin is identical.
I bet a lot of Brazilan fans are wondering how the CBF let Eder slip through their fingers.
Lahke
Right now I’m in Italy, and I can hear the noise from the crowd watching the lobby TV from my room 4 floors up. Guess I should pay attention so I can adopt the right expression at dinner.

@Randinho: Thank you, sir!
Randinho
@Paul in KY: My pleasure.
The brilliance of Spain’s attacking midfield in 2008-2012 was having both Iniesta and Xavi. Not to criticize Iniesta by any means; he just can’t do it all himself.
SRW1
@Randinho:
Indeed. Fabregas is achieving diddly-squat.
SRW1
ArrivederciCiao, Espania.catclub
@Gin & Tonic:
There is a similarly named Polish Bridge professional. He is referred to as Pepsi.

Great, I miss the marquee matchup of the knockouts because my boss expects me to do my goddamn job and not watch European football.
MobiusKlein
No Iceland vs whoever thread?

@MobiusKlein: At the top of the hour
