I keep trying to take pictures of Steve, and every time I get some good lighting and he is near, I call to him and someone comes in and interrupts the shot:
And then she oversees the editing process:
You can make out Thurston down there on the ground, too.
I’m watching Marco Polo season one, and whoever came up with footbinding was one sick bastard.

They appear to have the same ear profile.

Look at you! Cropping n’ shit!

Helicopter pet.
Which works with the ears also.

Awww, the lovely Miss Lily. You don’t give us pictures of her enough.

When I was a kid we’d go to Hong Kong to visit family and occasionally we’d visit my great aunt whose feet had been bound. Very weird to be that close to it and see the results yourself.
My Truth Hurts
I may not be happy with you and your front pagers at all lately but God damn it I love your pets and all the posts about adopting and helping pets.
Asshole.

It’s like Dali’s melting clocks, those ears
ETA actually the multi-ear picture is extremely well composed, Mr. Cole. I congratulate you on your improved skills.

John, is Rosie still part of your family? You haven’t mentioned her or shown a picture of her in ages. Hope she’s okay. Lily is gorgeous, like a little fawn.
Also, how are those JRTs your parents have — Ginny and Guesley (sp?)? Back in the day you used to give us funny videos of them. Hope they’re also okay.

Where is Rosie?

John,
You and Lily have such a special bond – thanks for sharing the pix.

It’s Election Day in Oz. The miracle of democracy has rolled around to once again disappoint half the population. At least the never ending, mind numbing eight week campaign is finally over.
Liberals (conservatives) vs Labor (sorta liberals).
It’s 51/49 in the polls with the Liberals in front. So it’s another term of economic bastardry and social stonewalling in store for us.
But at least we can dull the pain with a sausage sizzle.

@Viva BrisVegas: You’ve heard of the song “A whole lotta Rosie”, yes?

Also, I object to Cole’s 80’s derogatory phrasing for the title of this post.

@Viva BrisVegas:
Be thankful it’s only 8 weeks.!
Hope you make it to Bunnings Warehouse and enjoy a good snag !

I took back-to-back courses on Chinese history – Imperial China and Revolutionary China – and the professor (who taught both classes) showed us photographs taken of women’s bound feet. Cue the howls of disgust and horror from us white-bread kids. The professor looked at us and said, “Sure, it looks bad. The effect was to keep women housebound, captive to their families. But consider what your children and grandchildren are going to have to say about liposuction, high heels, and breast implants.”
His point was that every era demands that women conform to social standards of both desirability and respectability, and God help them if they fail one iota. And when you throw in the effects implants and liposuction (or bariatric surgery) can have on people’s health, the only two things that remove it from the heinousness of foot-binding are that the patients are usually given anesthesia, and plastic surgery usually isn’t performed on four- and five-year-old little girls.

Also, Cole’s dogs are cute, but I want to see what Steve looks like now. :)

@Gemina13:
Apparently you missed the post downstairs.
Mnemosyne
@Gemina13:
I’m sorry, but whatever one thinks of (presumably) rational adults choosing to alter their bodies with surgery, permanently destroying the mobility of a child who’s too young to consent is pretty fucking morally reprehensible. You (generic you, not you personally) can’t just skip over the whole consent issue as if it’s unimportant.

@redshirt:
I was raised on Accadacca, but really the band died the same day as Bon Scott.
I’m not sure of the congruence between the musical Rosie and our host’s Rosie?
Elizabelle
Love that Lily.
And little Thurston in the dark too.

@Steeplejack: I also missed that. Hee hee.
My new job is super cool. Great coworkers, at least as far as I can tell. They give the tech team lots of ergonomic evaluations and great chairs and lots of monitors to avoid workman’s comp claims, and it came with a nice pair of noise-canceling headphones. We’re also right by the campus observatory so they have stargazing nights. And we have access to the gyms and research libraries. And the best part is they don’t bust my balls to work long days like a startup would. Oh, and it’s a think tank that does good work, so, doing well by doing good. Good times.
My friend told me about the website 750words.com, which basically lets/encourages you to diary for 750 words a day every day and is kind of cute, does sentiment analysis and stuff. I signed up but after a few days I noticed that it’s a 30-day trial and they charge $5 a month now, which seems a little much. I guess my friend started using it back before they started charging, so he’s grandfathered in and never noticed. Too bad.
So my train commuting project this week (hooray for trains!) has been writing my own website to do that. It’s done, more or less. I think I’ll make it live once I have it looking pretty and it’s got support for hashtags and stuff.

Thanks for the pics. ?

@Steeplejack:
I did indeed. I just hit the top post, which happened to be this one. Thank you for the link.
I keep forgetting what a wonderful face Steve has, mostly because I’m overawed by all the hair. I’ve had a lynxpoint Siamese who was 25 pounds of fur masquerading as a mobile purr with blue eyes, but damned if I’m not intimidated by the thought of dealing with a Maine Coon’s coat. And I pity the groomers for what they went through (projectile effluvia, etc.), but they did a wonderful job on him. He looks fantastic.

@Major Major Major Major: I don’t suppose you’d consider making the code available to be run under a xampp stack? I love the idea of these things, but hate having the resulting writing on someone else’s server.

I liked Marco Polo. you’ll LOVE the 100 eyes special after you’re done!

@Major Major Major Major: congratulations! Job satisfaction makes life so much better.
Are you working on high speed rail, branch lines and the like, or multi-modal transit?
