Balloon Juice

Come for the politics, stay for the snark.

You cannot shame the shameless.

Beware of advice from anyone for whom Democrats are “they” and not “we.”

We cannot abandon the truth and remain a free nation.

Disappointing to see gov. newsom with his finger to the wind.

Wake up. Grow up. Get in the fight.

The Supreme Court cannot be allowed to become the ultimate, unaccountable arbiter of everything.

Whatever happens next week, the fight doesn’t end.

Jesus, Mary, & Joseph how is that election even close?

The worst democrat is better than the best republican.

Republicans firmly believe having an abortion is a very personal, very private decision between a woman and J.D. Vance.

You don’t get rid of your umbrella while it’s still raining.

No one could have predicted…

America is going up in flames. The NYTimes fawns over MAGA celebrities. No longer a real newspaper.

Boeing: repeatedly making the case for high speed rail.

My years-long effort to drive family and friends away has really paid off this year.

Rupert, come get your orange boy, you petrified old dinosaur turd.

Republicans want to make it harder to vote and easier for them to cheat.

Incompetence, fear, or corruption? why not all three?

“But what about the lurkers?”

I like political parties that aren’t owned by foreign adversaries.

With all due respect and assumptions of good faith, please fuck off into the sun.

Technically true, but collectively nonsense

Republicans cannot even be trusted with their own money.

Republicans seem to think life begins at the candlelight dinner the night before.

48 hours after posting the image, Trump comments on it for the first time… https://t.co/XDE8mkpP4I

— Brian Stelter (@brianstelter) July 4, 2016

Dishonest media is trying their absolute best to depict a star in a tweet as the Star of David rather than a Sheriff's Star, or plain star!

— Donald J. Trump (@realDonaldTrump) July 4, 2016

Huh. Then why did you delete it? https://t.co/4i124UC7pF

— Daniel Drezner (@dandrezner) July 4, 2016

Short bursts, because that’s as close as a sane person wants to get. More serious arguments later in this thread…

Confirmed: Graphic w/ six-pointed star Trump tweeted yesterday was posted 10 days ago on anti-Semitic message board: https://t.co/nlsH0ocvdV

Remember when Hitler made six million Jewish sheriffs? Oh wait. He didn't? He killed them instead.

— (((Harry Enten))) (@ForecasterEnten) July 4, 2016

Dishonest media is trying their absolute best to depict a series of lines as a swastika rather than an abstract drawing, or just plain art!

Many are just culturally sheriffs; they don’t really practice law enforcement.

Is Trump's shift from racism to anti-semitism part of the general election pivot we've all been told he's going to make?

— Frank Conniff (@FrankConniff) July 3, 2016

Trump's outright use of anti-Semitic memes has already expanded the boundaries for political speech, judging from the number of defenders.

— Jamelle Bouie (@jbouie) July 4, 2016

1/ The whole point of the "alt-right" is to make white nationalism "mainstream." Now they've latched onto a major party candidate.

— Joy Reid (@JoyAnnReid) July 3, 2016

3/ That this candidate has repeatedly distributed alt-right memes with no apparent concern is alarming.

— Joy Reid (@JoyAnnReid) July 3, 2016

Clinton camp: Trump's tweet 'blatantly anti-Semitic' https://t.co/SlDsUUOCrs via @ZachMontellaro

— POLITICO (@politico) July 4, 2016

… “Donald Trump’s use of a blatantly anti-Semitic image from racist websites to promote his campaign would be disturbing enough, but the fact that it’s a part of a pattern should give voters major cause for concern,” said Sarah Bard, Clinton’s director of Jewish outreach, in a statement. “Now, not only won’t he apologize for it, he’s peddling lies and blaming others.”…

I am amused by Paul Waldman, asking when will Republicans say that they won’t participate in this? Um, dude, it is very clear that the answer is NEVER. They will participate in all manner of exclusion and cruelty and hatred as long as it’s done by someone in their tribe. There is no limit. Best to bail out now.

My family’s last name is pretty obviously jewish in origin. My dad is a lawyer and back in the 80’s his firm represented trump in a dispute (surprise, surprise, trump refused to pay the bill). The one and only time he met Trump, Trump’s assistant introduced him, Trump repeated my dad’s last name and said “Oh, good, a jew attorney.”

As for this latest incident, I’m surprised more people aren’t pointing out that even his defense on twitter (blaming the “dishonest media”) is another wink at the alt-right.

I honestly think that once the Republican convention happens and Donald is officially the nominee, his numbers are going to plunge. I think a lot of Republicans are still in denial that he’s the real nominee and think that something is going to swoop in at the last second and save them all that embarrassment.

…Trump as a national election campaigner is just shit. To wit, he’s blown these usual (media-enabled) GOPer opportunities:

    – Orlando
    – Brexit
    – Turkey’s terrorist attack
    – Bill/Loretta’s tarmac adventure
    – Benghazi Report

Any halfway competent GOP presidential campaign could make some pretty decent hay out of these events.

Where DO people get news today?

We know TV and newspapers have shrunk drastically so only a minority consume them.

People like us, internet political junkies of both right and left, are undoubtedly few in number.

So where does the average person find out basic news like who won an election?

At what point do more Republicans say, I simply cannot be a part of this?

That would be fucking never. Any Republican who hasn’t publicly disassociated him- or herself from the beast by now isn’t going to do so.

    @Hungry Joe:

What I can’t grasp is polling that shows around 25% of Hispanics backing him.

Well, that does approach the well documented 27% level of crazy in any given population.

And the thing to understand about /pol/ and Milo Andreas Wagner and all of that horrorshow is that edgelord/shitlord culture is built upon “everything is trolling” and working with the worst shit is what gives them their shallow sense of outrage-power.

If they were in Syria they would have been blowing up Palmyra’s temples and smashing its antiquities and slaughtering its museum directors in the ampitheatre.

@efgoldman: I watched from the Boston side betw. the BU bridge and the Maas. Ave. one. A great spot, actually, and a walk from my home.

My office overlooks a courtyard, so no river/fireworks view for me. I have often viewed the display from in front of my building, but the new spot is actually a better angle and much less hassle to get into and (especially) out of.

    @Anne Laurie:
For a man to convert to Judaism he must be circumcised, even if he was already circumcised at birth. Good luck getting a lot of conversions.

The Israeli rabbis who approve immigration are ultra-orthodox and hate converts, as well. Your conversion has to cross every t, dot every i, and cut every foreskin if you want Israeli citizenship.

@Barbara: Do you have a reference for that case, which I would love to read up on?

My google-fu has, alas, proven inadequate.
