It’s been a long and winding road, this 2016 Democratic Party primary. A little too long and a bit too winding, according to some of us (me included). But today it ends (by the FSM’s holy Elbow, please, let it end!) in Portsmouth, New Hampshire at the upcoming joint Clinton-Sanders rally, live-streamed below:
This is it, comrades. Time to unite behind the Lady of Chappaqua and march on the Black Gate, prepared to take down the Orcs and cast the Lord of Mordor’s furry Hairpiece of Power into the fires of Mount Doom!

I have a ring – not a ring – the ring – and it’s a tremendous ring. It’s a Ruling Ring, which by the way barely fits on my finger. I have a problem with large fingers – very big hands, I can tell you. This ring is really the one ring to rule them all – all of them – the illegals, the blacks, the gays, the whoevers, it doesn’t matter. They’re all gonna – they all do love me. I don’t have to in any way bind them all, but, really, they might want to be binded, and I have the best binding, really top of the line binding, so there aren’t going to be any complaints, believe me …

It’s annoying and funny to see the last vestiges of the pure Bernie folk come to terms with it. I have a couple FB friends who are grief stricken, Bernie’s selling out, and how Jill Stein deserves everyone’s vote. Seems that what unites these people isn’t policy so much as Hillary Hatred. Where does that come from in Democrats/liberals? That’s buying into the media presentation of Hillary. I don’t get it. One has to see that at least.
Now the Bernie folk who are saying their voting for Trump, well they are exposed as trolls or paid campaign sock puppets (or both). These are the ones who deserve the mockery.

@shomi: Eh – he’s acting like a politician. He’s been a politician for something like 35 years so it shouldn’t be surprising. It’s how the system is supposed to work to a large degree – mutual self-interest is kind of baked in.
I think expecting him to be a superior form of politician is a mistake whether you’re one of his supporters or someone who was against him. It’s always a mistake when folks on the left convince themselves that some politician is somehow better than the typical politician – most politicians are folks who believe a few things deeply, believe a LOT of things shallowly, and are looking to get elected to a particular job where they believe that they’ll do a good job at it. I don’t see Sanders as being any different from any other average-to-good politician in that regard.

From the future, here’s Bernie’s closing:
cmorenc
What Bernie’s saying is an enthusiastic-enough endorsement for me. Good enough that I can forgive Bernie’s segue into horse’s ass mode for several weeks. There’s probably nothing he could do at this point to make himself a good choice as Hillary’s VP pick – he’s not suddenly transformed himself into the kind of team player that role requires, but he has restored himself as (along with Elizabeth Warren) a key leader of the progressive wing of the Democratic party, and the progressive movement in this country.
Trentrunner
Bernie’s closing:
It is no secret that Hillary Clinton and I disagree on a number of issues. That’s what this campaign has been about. That’s what democracy is about. But I am happy to tell you that at the Democratic Platform Committee which ended Sunday night in Orlando, there was a significant coming together between the two campaigns and we produced, by far, the most progressive platform in the history of the Democratic Party. Our job now is to see that platform implemented by a Democratic Senate, a Democratic House and a Hillary Clinton president – and I am going to do everything I can to make that happen.
I have known Hillary Clinton for 25 years. I remember her as a great first lady who broke precedent in terms of the role that a first lady was supposed to play as she helped lead the fight for universal health care. I served with her in the United States Senate and know her as a fierce advocate for the rights of children.
Hillary Clinton will make an outstanding president and I am proud to stand with her here today.

Good lord am I glad that’s over. I think the most annoying part for me was the claim that Sanders had no right to run and how dare he not drop out and endorse Hillary Clinton a year before the election. Yes, even more annoying than some of the idiotic claims from Sanders supporters about Clinton.
He was running for President. You get to do that. And you get to do that all the way to the convention without anyone claiming that it’s handing the Presidency to Donald Trump.
We’re going to see a replay of Chirac v Le Pen, in my humble opinion. People didn’t have to like Chirac all that much to vote for him, they just had to detest Le Pen enough to do so. Different countries and systems and blah blah of course, and Trump won’t get only 17.8% like Le Pen did, but he might not get all that much more than that,

What changes between the DC primary and the convention? Do you find a previously-lost stash of delegates under the couch?
He had every right to run for President. He lost. In real, actual votes, he lost. In pledged delegates, he lost. In superdelegates, he lost. In states, he lost. There is no metric used by which he won or even lead. He wasn’t just running for President. He was running for the Democratic nomination for that office. In that race, there was a winner, and one of the nice, civilized things we do in that race is for the loser to concede to the winner, because when we haven’t had that happen, it has hurt the Democratic nominee in the general election. (See: Kennedy/Carter for an example.)
He totally is allowed to campaign until the convention. We are totally allowed to mock that decision.
Thankfully, he has conceded, and endorsed, and I can stop feeling any animus towards Bernie. I did vote for him, after all.

Fabulous film, About Mrs. Leslie (1954). Hard to believe that Shirley (b. 1898 and none too skinny) could make a romance with Robert Ryan (b. 1909 and devastatingly handsome) believable, but she pulled it off! She was an incredible actress.

Wait, I read a young adult novel with a strategy for this. What HA needs to do is keep putting himself in mortal danger; each time, he’ll have a psychic flash where he sees Sanders. I talked to a Republican I like here yesterday about insurgent candidates. I like him because he’s a partisan and doesn’t pretend to be “voting for the person”- he’s just Red Team.
He said insurgent candidates have a kind of “build” that doesn’t stop- they add and add support once they reach a certain level. He was excited by Trump and also Sanders because it looked like it might be of those elections, and those are fun for election junkies- underdogs, all that. Whatever else ’08 was, it was certainly an interesting race. Anyway, he thinks both Trump and Sanders “stalled” in a way that insurgents can’t. They have such a narrow window they have to keep growing or they can’t finish. I think that’s true. Obama had that. It had its own roll after a certain point.

And I’m delighted to hear about it, and a happy pony today :)
I just got back from a week spent working on staff for Bronycon (MLP fan convention in Baltimore) which was truly awesome, and I’m happy to come home to Democrats working together in spite of their differences (and to see Bernie fullthroatedly endorse the President we’ll be moving forward with). He will continue to be super useful (not as VP, thank heavens: I still favor Warren for that) and he’s accepted that Hillary is just plain a better politician than him. And that shows in how she’s let him do his endorsement and keep some dignity (ish) and has recognized that he represents a movement, perhaps an immature and unreasonable movement, but one that needs to bring its strength to the Democrats so we can really get this country running properly. I trust Hillary to be able to handle this consolidation, to neither resist nor give too much, and we’ll end up with a really functional organization.
I just got a five year service pin for working on Bronycon staff, and I was looking back on some of the old notes from previous years. One was the private logs of staff chats for 2012-2013. Bronycon grew very fast and went through amazing turmoil too, and ended up with a solid experienced staff who could weather some static and trouble. Looking back at what it was like working with the con leadership back in those revolutionary days, I’m all the more grateful things worked out in the long run.
May we look back on this moment in future years and say we were grateful Hillary was there, back when it could have gone any number of directions, but we ended up getting a functioning, responsive government that could handle governing :)

@philadelphialawyer: I’d agree with that. Bad overall strategy from the outset, undervaluing the inherent coalition that Democrats form; it takes a lot less to hold on to the folks already in your tent…but you got to make SOME effort to do so. And it was bad tactics to emphasize process over issues; issues are a bigger weakness for Clinton in the generals than process (not to mention the old saw that if you want to take over a group’s money and organizational skills, you don’t badmouth them or destroy the process that created them).

It’s the little girls who need a woman President. This is something that most opinionators deliberately forget.
A few month ago when it was obvious that Hillary was winning the primary – I was with a group of women. We were not supposed to talk politics. But I said – this campaign is for all the little girls out there paying attention.
One mom in the group had a 7 year daughter and yes this girl does understand. Girls have been held back since forever – and now Hillary has a huge cheering squad. I am so happy for all the girls who are learning about politics.
I hate the what the GOP has done to Hillary for 25 years. Scream a negative story long enough some people will believe it. I’m glad Hillary has thick skin and I am certain she knows that she is doing this for the girls
Did you hear that GOP women are organizing for Hillary? I guess they didn’t let their inner child die. Out there is another Hillary who wants to make a difference. I think we have a generation of future female politicians. The girls are also learning about the mean old men.

So, despite all the angst, Bernie ended up doing exactly what I expected him to do. Good for him! his campaign, although unsuccessful, moved the party leftward on a whole host of issues, energized a lot of people and had a very positive effect. Yeah, he was about 4 months late with the endorsement, but we’ve still got 4 more months to go, so it’ll probably not matter much in the end. I will try to convince any reluctant Sanders supporters that it is in their interest to support Clinton and telling Sanders to go to hell is not part of my plan to get them on board.
philadelphialawyer
@gwangung:” it’s not helpful to trash him or, more importantly, his stand on issues. …”
Who said anything about being “helpful?” And why is it wrong to simply call Bernie an asshole for BEING an asshole? He refused to concede and congratulate when he should have, and he fed his supporters’ CT nonsense. It is not “trashing” him to point that out. Nor is their any law that any criticism of Bernie must be “helpful.”
Oh, and attacking his half baked “stand” on the “issues” is also more than justified. Bernie’s numbers never added up, and his economic proposals (at least given the current political climate) amounted to promising ponies, if not unicorns. One might also add that his stances on the issues of gender, reproductive freedom and racism were not so great either. Is it OK for me to say that, even if it is not “helpful?”
philadelphialawyer
@TriassicSands: Whatevs…I am here to comment, not electioneer, as are most other commenters, I think. I see this as a place where I can post what I honestly think and feel, and not have to worry too much about its alleged (and grossly overrated, in my opinion) affect on the overall election. The distinction between what posters here say and what the candidate and her campaign staff do and say is a real one, even if you don’t recognize it.

@burnspbesq:
Democrats will always need Sanders’ vote in the Senate. Even when they still held a majority, the Democrats had a number of shaky senators who couldn’t be counted on, for example Ben Nelson and eventually Joe Lieberman among others (gone, but not forgotten). There will always be “conservadems” in the Senate and Sanders has been and will likely always be a more reliable vote. Sanders designation as a “Democratic Socialist” rather than as a “Democrat” had no meaning when it came time to caucus or vote. What mattered was whom Sanders voted with and that was overwhelmingly the Democrats.
The idea that Democrats won’t need every last possible vote in the next Senate is in all likelihood just very wishful thinking. Further, the idea that Democrats would not accept Sanders in their caucus is incredible. They will take every senator willing to sign on, just as they have always done.
Finally, it would be outrageously hypocritical to only accept Sanders in the Dem caucus if his vote were needed to give the Dems the majority. What would happen if the Dems had a single vote majority (without Sanders, who the Dems rejected) and then a Democratic senator died or was otherwise forced to leave office (scandal?)? Would the Dems suddenly welcome Bernie back to the fold? Or would you prefer that the Democrats simply relinquish control of the Senate?
Bernie Sanders has been and will continue to be a reliable member of the Democratic caucus in the Senate. Despite his eccentric formal party affiliation he’s been more reliable over the years than any number of Senators who have worn the official title “Democrat.”
philadelphialawyer
@Keith G: You did.
I actually don’t think that Hillary has”chalked up a goodly amount” of mistakes. I think she is doing fine. And that she is kicking ass. She certainly kicked Sanders’ ass, and chalked up a victory against him. Oh, and she was elected as Senator from New York twice. So, I tend to think she knows more about how to run a campaign than you do.. And I find your endless, patronizing parsing and correcting of her mostly imagined mistakes to be annoying. Not “agitating,” just annoying.

@Gelfling545:
this is nonsense. He didn’t run as a socialist, he ran as democrat. 4% of the US voted for him, and 20 times that know fvck-all about him. To the extent that Socialism is at all less toxic in US political discourse than it once was, and I’m not granting that it is at all, the ACA being called socialism by the GOP for 7 years while it utterly failed to turn the US into the Soviet Union is way more responsible than Bernie’s failed vanity campaign.

And why does Hillary need to “kick ass?” Why isn’t winning enough? Is it really better if Hillary humiliates Sanders? Would making him beg for forgiveness and mercy improve Clinton’s chances in November?
I remain thankful that Clinton is professional enough (and mature enough) to avoid the kind of rhetoric that has been so common on BJ the last few months.
You and I have — or at least should have — a common goal: elect Hillary Clinton president of the United States in November 2016.
Sanders has lost and he’s endorsed Clinton. He’s said he’ll do everything he can to ensure that she will be the next president of the United States. It’s time to focus on what it will take to elect her and forget about all the bitterness and the need to somehow get even with Sanders because he had the audacity to run for president and not throw in the towel when some of Clinton’s supporters think he should have.

I mostly agree with this – Bernie Sanders was the least vetted of all the candidates. If he actually were the candidate, everyone would think he was a communist once the GOP started focusing on him, which is why they never did because they would have preferred to run against him. He’s got so many scary (to Real Americans(TM)) skeletons in his closet it isn’t funny.
philadelphialawyer
@TriassicSands: I am angry because Sanders acted like an asshole. About “the process” and about not conceding. I think I have made that clear. Is it really so hard to understand?
As for the rest of it, again, I am venting. I think this is an appropriate place to do so, and feel like I can do so, even if you conceive of posting here differently. And, again, I fully understand the difference between that, and what Hillary should do as a matter of expediency. And I really don’t need lectures from you about what is important and what I should “focus” on.
And that “kicking ass” comment was in response to someone who thinks that Hillary needs his advice on how to tie her shoes. I was just pointing out that she seems to be doing fine.

It cracks me up that people think BJ blog comments drive voting patterns. For every comment someone reads on BJ, they’re going to read a hundred from other sources, many more widely cited and more fervently stated. As much as I love the dialogue here, it’s straight-up hubris to think these comments are going to make a dent.
Raven Onthill
@the Conster, la Citoyenne: That, unfortunately, is true, and was one of my concerns from the beginning of this campaign. Americans say we are for equality. Americans resent the abuses of the banksters. And so on, and so on. But when given the opportunity to vote for such things, many Americans fall away in fear. It is hard to imagine Americans electing an old hippie like Sanders President; old Cold Warriors, on the other hand, no problem.
Right now I see two main unmeasured forces in this campaign. One of them is feminism; there are a lot of “The Women Men Don’t See,” and their votes may be decisive. The other, though, is anti-globalism. This is the demon that Trump has raised up and I do not know how to measure it, or estimate its influence on the campaign. It won in Britain, though by a hair. Perhaps it can win in the USA.

Anti-globalism is motivated by racism, sure, or at least racist actions are considered to be a corrective to globalism. That’s due to the successful twisting of history that the globalist politicians have achieved – blaming immigration for all the damage of globalization.
The actual end result of globalism that has caused tremendous harm and lots of misplaced resentment around the world is this: Workers who used to be able to get a job with a middle-class wage are now struggling to find one with minimum wage.
It would be extremely foolish to pretend that’s not an huge and important problem. It’s one of the things that made Bernie’s platform attractive.
It’s going to be one of the most important issues to move forward on, not just for dealing with the economic pain but also for avoiding as much as possible any racist ‘solutions’.
We all know this, I think, but I’ve seen a comment or two here implying that antiglobalism=racism and I wanted to push back on that.
gwangung
@philadelphialawyer: Trash implies more emotion and perhaps a more personal connection. Demolish implies to me an emotionless, methodical dismantling.

I noted recently that the Naked Capitalism website/blog listed Balloon Juice as ‘the loyal opposition’ – and I believe that moniker best summarizes the (large) majority of BJ commenters.
No matter what Sanders did throughout the primary process until (and including) today in Portsmouth, commenters here find fault with him in the most denigrating and dismissive manner(s) possible…the senator is not a ‘spoiler’ or a ‘sellout’…he continues to advance a truly progressive FDR-style agenda which reflects the feelings and beliefs of a majority of Americans….
The DLC/Third Way Democratic Party dominance of the past is waning fast, and will give way (over time) to a more democratic and forward-looking approach.
Political evolution is the future – and the future begins here.

@nutella: @Linnaeus: There’s multiple motivations. Mostly, I think we are scared of change. But racism is there, too. There are valid economic concerns, both with wages and banking (the Euro!) and valid governmental concerns. Then there’s my nightmare: maintaining peace. We have mostly forgotten that the European Union was created first to maintain peace in Europe and it has given Europe its longest peace in centuries. Yet we now live in a unified world, and I hope we do not see it torn apart.

@DCF: Thanks for the boiler plate, complete with boiler plate links.
Perhaps the reasons many folks don’t share your love for Sanders have escaped you. Hint: it isn’t because he is too “progressive.”
Rather, he:
(1) encouraged his CT supporters with his “unfair process” non sense (which, by the way, makes him an anti “democratic,” self serving, hypocritical sore loser);
(2) refused to concede, congratulate and endorse the winner in a timely and respectful fashion (which, by the way, makes him a sexist jerk and an asshole); and
(3) espoused policy positions that are not that great…too good to be true, in the economic sphere, and woefully inadequate to non existent in every other sphere (which, by the way, makes him a fraud, a blowhard, and a Johnny one note).
Hope that clears up your confusion.
