Interesting note on this launch – The risk assessment office decided a couple of days ago to make the normal press area and nearby buildings off-limits, because the launch abort system is operational (if the rocket malfunctions, it will separate the capsule to preserve the cargo.) Because the prevailing winds are toward land, it would potential land on the grounds of Kennedy Space Center.
(That could have changed since I read that report, though.)

@Redshift: Its been monsooning for several hours or I’d go out see if I could see it go up.
I LOVE this! It’s awesome to see them stick those landings. Also so fun to see those young engineers handling the narration of the mission with such aplomb. All of the kids in our family hang on every word.

@Major Major Major Major: I have no idea. I only know its been a too long weekend, so I’m going to rub doggy bellies and watch some expanded cable channel show on ghosts or cryptids or something.
Fun to be in a period again with active space stuff popping in at a regular clip. Belatedly found out about the Bronze Age archaeology at Must Farm today (here and here) which has more than fun levels of preservation. Oh, well, here’s another one with the cloth, although apparently no evidence of how many buttons they had, let alone kept buttoned.
Adam, have you heard anything about 1500 U.S. service members being held hostage in Turkey?

@Adam L Silverman: Every time I hear about SpaceX like this I’m reminded of this anime and I hope it stays fictional.
@Monala: I can only find info on it from right wing sites, so not sure if real.

@Monala: Its BS. Apparently someone at the Right Scoop decided that because Turkey has closed the airspace over Incirlik, this means that Erdogan is holding the US military personnel their hostage. This was then picked up by Mark Levin, Alan West, and others. No reputable news source, in the US, Britain, and/or Europe is reporting this as Turkey taking and holding American military personnel hostage. Every legitimate news service simply reported out that yesterday, as I mentioned in one of the Turkey coup posts, Erdogan had closed the airspace over Incirlik and the speculation is by holding up US airstrikes from Incirlik against IS in Syria, he may be trying to use this as leverage to get the US to send Gulen back so he can dispose of him. The Turks can’t really close the airspace and hold it closed. If they really tried to do so using their own air assets, they’d be quickly defeated by our carrier group based air assets in the Med. And Erdogan isn’t stupid. He maybe ruthless, but he knows he can’t make good on the airspace closure if we pushed it. We respect the airspace closure, because its a norm of sovereignty. But if we absolutely had to take off or land there right now, we could force things and it would be very, very uncomfortable for the Turks. But we’re not going to push this to breaking and neither will Erdogan. Neither we nor him are going to break NATO over this. Demarches will be traded. The CENTCOM Commander will be meeting with his counterparts. The Chief of Mission (Ambassador Ankara) with his. And the Senior Defense Official on the Chief of Mission’s staff with his. And Secretaries Kerry and Carter will be in contact with their counterparts. This will get resolved, though the usual suspects will be trying to make it out as a failure of President Obama’s leadership because he’s leading from behind. My guess is this is a screaming point that is being tried out for staying power ahead of tomorrow night’s RNC start.

Stuck the landing. 6.0, 6.0, 3.5 from the Uzbeki judge – they’ve been very tough on the mandatory fundamentals so far…

Very nice all around! Almost getting to be routine.

This makes me rather nostalgic for Uncle Walter doing countdowns on Apollo missions…
