So. I am writing a comic book series for Marvel. https://t.co/adcBWBtThT
— roxane gay (@rgay) July 22, 2016
My inner teenage comix geek still gets excited when new, diverse writers get top billing… especially when they’re highlighted in the NYTimes!
… Her story, written with Mr. [Ta-Nehisi] Coates, will follow Ayo and Aneka, two lovers who are former members of the Dora Milaje, the Black Panther’s female security force. “The opportunity to write black women and queer black women into the Marvel universe, there’s no saying no to that,” she said.
The first issue of World of Wakanda will include a 10-page second story by Ms. Harvey about Zenzi, a female revolutionary who incited a riot in the first issue of the Black Panther series. Mr. Coates, who recruited both writers, said he thought it was important to have female voices help breathe life into these characters. “The women in Black Panther’s life are very, very important,” he said…
Apart from celebrating a wider world inside our imaginations, what’s on the agenda for the evening?

Did you see the wapo article on how political cartoonists draw Trump?

Yes… Comic Con thread…I was waiting or a general open thread!
So I was not initially sold on Gail Gadot as Wonder Woman. But Wonder Woman was my first favorite comic superhero (I had the underoos for gawds sake), so I was always gonna be here for a solo film
They premiered the trailer for Wonder Woman at Comic Con and mahn…that trailer is awesome. OMG, I’m so hyped for it now!

But wait, they weren’t done…WB/DC also premiered the Justice League poster and footage from the film as well.

Alright WB/DC, you’ve got my attention!

Because I was scanning the tweets and the hashtags too quickly, I thought I read that John Lewis had won the Isengard Award.

Open thread random question about the Democratic convention:
I’ll be in Philadelphia next week visiting a cousin for a couple of days… which means I’ll be in town at the time of a presidential convention for my first time. Is there any part of the convention that’s open to the public and/or any events going on around the convention that’re worth going to? Seems a shame to be in the same town and pass it by altogether.

@Chris: bet not. There might be an open air rally afterwards, but I doubt even that in the current security climate.

@Chris:
There does seem to be a bunch of people sitting in the upper bowl part of convention venues so it might be worthwhile to contact your local, or the PA Democratic offices and ask. The RNC was in St. Paul a couple conventions back but I had no desire to sit through that. The sure made traffic, even in Minneapolis, a mess. The only part I enjoyed was that the buses used to drag them around all came from one company, their name was printed on the side of each bus, “LAMERS”. It seem apropos.

Yeah, what I’ve heard is that WW is the only worthwhile part of Batman v. Superman (I refused to pay for that in theaters, it just looked way too crappy to justify the expense, but I may still watch it if it gets to Netflix), and the idea of the World War One period piece setting sounds promising.

I was looking at the scheduled speakers and, dang, Hillary really is going all in on disability rights, isn’t she? That’s pretty cool.
Also interesting that most of the economic/working people speakers are scheduled to speak the same day as Hillary does to maximize their exposure.
And Berniebros won’t have any room to complain about his speaking spot: he’s right before Michelle Obama, and I know people (including me) will be tuning in to see her speak.

From article:
Haven’t read all of it (looking forward to TNC’s Black Panther when all of it’s collected into one book), but I can’t say enough good things about either the Kamala Khan comic or the Sam Wilson/Captain America comic.
(Also, I thanked everybody for their convention suggestions in my last post, but that one got moderationed. So again, thanks everyone!)
Matt McIrvin
@Mike J: God, that is depressing. So many of the cartoonists are all “both sides are equally evil liars”, including the very first one they talk to.
Iowa Old Lady
@Matt McIrvin: That was my reaction too.
I’m still thinking about the VP rollout. So, Clinton didn’t play “You Can’t Always Get What You Want.” She didn’t talk about herself for 25 minutes before introducing Kaine. And once she introduced him, she didn’t wander away and leave him on his own. The election has already come to the point where I notice those things and cheer for them. Sad!
Matt McIrvin
@Iowa Old Lady: Of course, if the “both sides” guys are all the Republicans (I know at least one of them is), that puts the statement in a different light.

@lamh36: Wow. Really liked this. Switching the time period to WWI allows for a fresh visual look (for superhero movies) and the period was one of huge changes for the role of women (like getting the vote!). WWI can even roll with the steampunk. The English and American steampunk tend to be just the Victorian era, but the rest of the world stretches it to the long 19th century, French Revolution to WWI.
Did not see Batman v. Superman. Will probably catch it when it starts streaming. It’s available for rent now, and I laughed when I saw that the cover art was Wonder Woman front and center, Bats and Supes behind. Did it really suck that bad?

If I were there, I’d go to as many of those caucuses as I could manage every day. The big speeches, celebrity sightings, and balloon drops are great fun, but the ideas are going to be generated in those smaller interest-group sessions. That’s where state legislative agendas, local initiatives, and the Dem platforms for 2020 and beyond are going to be drafted.

It was still bad, but at least I have no lingering doubts to see it again to find out how it ends.
Only other movie I walked out of was a foreign language film, either in Spanish or Italian. I was visiting my mom. She picked it. The description said it was about young lovers something, something traveling in Europe.
The opening credits had the teens humping, buck naked on the edge of a bed. Very awkward watching that with mom sitting next to you. We got up and walked out in five minutes.
Movie theater let see another movie that was just starting at no extra cost. We saw Enigma, about British efforts to break German code in the early part of WW2. Very nice film.
Kropadope
@germy: It stands on its own. What few things are mentioned from the previous movies aren’t major factors in the plot. You can jump right in just as easily as you could watch any random episode of the show. Just know that the movies exist on their own timeline separate from the show.

@gene108: I’ve walked out of three movies ever. The first ever was National Treasure which, mercifully, I had free tickets for. I also walked out of two Heath Ledger movies in the same day. Casanova looked funny from the trailers, but I got bored watching it. So I went to see Brokeback Mountain and found myself wishing I hadn’t left the first movie.
justawriter
@Kropadope: Baio got the spillover love from being introduced as Fonzie’s nephew on Happy Days.
This, along with the recent death of Garry Marshall, got me to thinking about those old shows. The dad in Happy Days ran a hardware store. Archie Bunker worked in a factory and then owned a bar. The parents in Good Times were a laid off construction worker and a housekeeper. Laverne and Shirley worked on the bottling line in a brewery. Maude’s husband owned an appliance store. Sanford and Son were junk dealers. Chico and the Man were mechanics. Alice waitressed in Mel’s Diner.
I don’t watch much mainstream TV anymore (mostly Syfy and BBCA) so I am woefully out of date with pop culture. But I’m hard pressed to think of that many current shows with blue collar main characters. Are there popular shows out there that aren’t about doctors, lawyers, cops, firemen or brilliant eccentric crime solvers?

@justawriter: The Simpsons.
Hal
Funny. I just finished watching Batman vs Superman. The first hour of this 2 and 1/2 hour movie is boring as fuck. Once they get into the battle scenes it gets exciting and fun, but that’s largely because of Wonder Woman. Why they didn’t use her way more in this film is beyond me. As one review mentioned there is a scene where WW is literally using an atm. That’s how little they used the character.
Just way too much squeezed into one film and I do not like Ben Affleck as Batman. Zack Snyder is a comic book nihilist who seems to strive to take all the fun and excitement out of these characters.

Just talked to a long time buddy. He is getting ready to evacuate his house due to a very rapidly spreading fire in socal. I live 30 miles away and yesterday walked outside at about 7pm not knowing about any fire, to find thick smoke and ash all over the place, with the sky all red. Figured there had to be a fire not more than 5 miles away, not 35, but of course it’s not all that far from my friend. This would be the 3rd time over the last 22 yrs they have had to get out, the first 2 times they lost their house to fire. So far 11,000 acres have burned, the temp in the area is 108, humidity is 10%. This is at least the third major fire in the general area in the last 4 months.

And I’m another 15-20 miles away than you so yeah, least of our problems. As I said I used to live a mile away from my friend and that was in the direction of the fire. Very rough terrain off the paved areas, almost impossible to even hike in when not on fire. Right now they are mostly only able to fight with aircraft and haven’t been able to get a fire break started.

I have been lucky. Have met Carter, Clinton, and Obama. Met Teddy Kennedy in 1982 in DC when he stopped me and complemented me on my dress (I kid you not.) Life be good.
