Balloon Juice

Come for the politics, stay for the snark.

When I decide to be condescending, you won’t have to dream up a fantasy about it.

JFC, are there no editors left at that goddamn rag?

Nothing worth doing is easy.

rich, arrogant assholes who equate luck with genius

I really should read my own blog.

Make the republican party small enough to drown in a bathtub.

And we’re all out of bubblegum.

Bark louder, little dog.

A democracy can’t function when people can’t distinguish facts from lies.

It’s always darkest before the other shoe drops.

That’s my take and I am available for criticism at this time.

It’s time for the GOP to dust off that post-2012 autopsy, completely ignore it, and light the party on fire again.

Prediction: the GOP will rethink its strategy of boycotting future committees.

The next time the wall street journal editorial board speaks the truth will be the first.

If you tweet it in all caps, that makes it true!

Incompetence, fear, or corruption? why not all three?

“Squeaker” McCarthy

This blog will pay for itself.

Red lights blinking on democracy’s dashboard

My years-long effort to drive family and friends away has really paid off this year.

A thin legal pretext to veneer over their personal religious and political desires

Not all heroes wear capes.

I see no possible difficulties whatsoever with this fool-proof plan.

A snarling mass of vitriolic jackals

Trump says he'd like to write a book about the sensitive info his VP possibilities turned over to his campaign. #itllhappen

Trump says Pence came back clean but other vets turned up "many, many pages" of info on VP options https://t.co/rB01ZzSJis

— Alex Burns (@alexburnsNYT) July 25, 2016

Because not being in the media spotlight for even one day makes the Combover Caligula break out in the cold sweats, like any other junkie. Just imagine how happy Paul Ryan and Reince Preibus must be about Trump threatening to use this information to punish all his enemies! It’ll make finding a viable candidate so much easier in 2020…

Apart from all the poo-flinging monkeys, what’s on the agenda for the evening?

It's worth taking a step back and just noting the Republican nominee for POTUS is bragging "Putin likes me" https://t.co/MI6igALIvx

— Ben Jacobs (@Bencjacobs) July 25, 2016

The new joke in town is that Russia leaked the disastrous DNC e-mails, which should never have been written (stupid), because Putin likes me

Once, candidates hired Americans to break into their opponents’ communications. Now those good jobs have been outsourced.

Trump is schvitzing and not happy about it, threatening not to pay for the hotel ballroom rental because it's hot.

Also, Kevin Drum points out that Bernie may not be terribly bright:

Our reporters say that Sanders “looked a bit surprised by the intensity of the Clinton opposition.” I can’t imagine why. This is one of the big problems I had with him back during the primary. It’s one thing to fight on policy grounds, as he originally said he would, but when you start promising the moon and explicitly accusing Hillary Clinton of being a corrupt shill for Wall Street—well, there are some bells that can be unrung. He convinced his followers that Hillary was a corporate warmonger more concerned with lining her own pockets than with progressive principles, and they still believe it. And why wouldn’t they? Their hero told them it was true.

I know him personally, and while I respect him greatly he gets a lot wrong about Trump (he’s under the mistaken belief that Trump actually has logical positions, and ignores the fact that Trump has contradicted nearly every position he has taken), and he is overly charitable by picking the most appealing-to-progressives positions for Trump that one could pick. He suggestions about what to do are basically the standard suggestions he’s been writing about for years (which are good, but not new).

I want a world of universal health care, sane foreign policy, human rights for all people, but I accept that movement will be hard and stilted because there are others who want anything but those things. To fight and win is to make measured steps. What I, and I think many other liberal people, resent is being lectured on what it means to be liberal and care about justice. I fucking care assholes, I just realize that we are still within a lifetime of concentration camps, near nuclear war, killing fields, the deposing of an Iranian leader by my government, the right of people of color to more meaningfully participate in American society. Nina Turner makes me a little nuts. Certain Bernie supporters “feelings are hurt”? More people voted for Hillary than voted for Bernie. I am damn sure that if Bernie had pulled it out that they would have given one flying F about Hillary supporters feelings. And Hillary would have sucked it up and thrown her full support behind Bernie while smiling. But we’re just women, and our feelings are always hurt while the remaining Bernie hard liners are different. Their feelings matter, mostly because a lot of them are Bros and because it hurts their feelings when an old white man loses to a woman.

Key and Peele once did a sketch about the (not real) guy who ends up having to follow MLK’s “I Have A Dream Speech.” It’s apparently a recurring nightmare of comedians to have to follow someone who just kills the room and then the audience couldn’t care less.

I hope Bernie has to live that nightmare tonight after the one-two punch of Elizabeth Warren and Michelle Obama. For Democrats, that’s like having to go on after Prince AND David Bowie both played.

(Feel free to substitute your own musical references.)

He thinks the joke is on Clinton now because if Trump is elected the original deal will be broken and she won’t be able to control him. He’s voting for Stein (out of principle) but hopes Trump wins so HRC’s plot will be foiled. Grown man in his 60’s, long time Dem who worshipped Obama. I’m in shock. The irony of all of this for me is that my actual policy views are to the left of Sanders (and to the left of all Sanders supporters I’ve spoken with who are confused and dismissive when I say I couldn’t support him in the primary) and yet this whole episode has made me less likely to make common cause with them about things they and I share because I wouldn’t trust them to be good faith partners. That actually sets back progress of the causes they believe in — I don’t know, but I’m not sure I’m alone in that view.

OK, I have a legitimate question. Once we get her officially nominated with the roll call tomorrow and if some of these Bernie delegates are still booing and being disruptive, can their credentials be taken away? That way they are denied admission on Wed and Thurs for the main speeches. Does anyone know the protocol on this and what could be done? I’m hoping they are getting it out of their system but clearly both the Clinton and Sanders’ campaign have been caught off guard with this.

Bing-bing-bing! You, sir or madam, have discerned the hidden clue!

Hell, some of us Hillbots have been saying the same damned thing since Bernie became Flavor-of-the-Progressive-Week. We remember these jagoffs, and their parents/grandparents, pulling the same crap back in the 1970s.
