Balloon Juice

Come for the politics, stay for the snark.

Pessimism assures that nothing of any importance will change.

I see no possible difficulties whatsoever with this fool-proof plan.

No one could have predicted…

Infrastructure week. at last.

Republican obstruction dressed up as bipartisanship. Again.

In my day, never was longer.

Today’s GOP: why go just far enough when too far is right there?

Good lord, these people are nuts.

Is it irresponsible to speculate? It is irresponsible not to.

The worst democrat is better than the best republican.

Give the craziest people you know everything they want and hope they don’t ask for more? Great plan.

Authoritarian republicans are opposed to freedom for the rest of us.

This fight is for everything.

Come on, man.

They traffic in fear. it is their only currency. if we are fearful, they are winning.

We are aware of all internet traditions.

It may be funny to you motherfucker, but it’s not funny to me.

rich, arrogant assholes who equate luck with genius

Prediction: the GOP will rethink its strategy of boycotting future committees.

My years-long effort to drive family and friends away has really paid off this year.

Whatever happens next week, the fight doesn’t end.

I’d try pessimism, but it probably wouldn’t work.

You can’t attract Republican voters. You can only out organize them.

I’d like to think you all would remain faithful to me if i ever tried to have some of you killed.

This was amazing. Accept no substitutes.

(ETA: click back to the beginning to see her whole speech if you missed it).

I was in tears…so very proud to say this woman is the First Lady of the United States of America.

It looks like we could use a fresh DNC thread. Last one looks like comment overload. Carry on…Elizabeth is speaking now.

    Sanders’ peroration tonight:

In these stressful times for our country, this election must be about bringing our people together, not dividing us up. While Donald Trump is busy insulting one group after another, Hillary Clinton understands that our diversity is one of our greatest strengths. Yes. We become stronger when black and white, Latino, Asian-American, Native American – all of us – stand together. Yes. We become stronger when men and women, young and old, gay and straight, native born and immigrant fight to create the kind of country we all know we can become.

It is no secret that Hillary Clinton and I disagree on a number of issues. That’s what this campaign has been about. That’s what democracy is about. But I am happy to tell you that at the Democratic Platform Committee there was a significant coming together between the two campaigns and we produced, by far, the most progressive platform in the history of the Democratic Party. Among many other strong provisions, the Democratic Party now calls for breaking up the major financial institutions on Wall Street and the passage of a 21st Century Glass-Steagall Act. It also calls for strong opposition to job-killing free trade agreements like the Trans-Pacific Partnership.

Our job now is to see that platform implemented by a Democratic Senate, a Democratic House and a Hillary Clinton presidency – and I am going to do everything I can to make that happen.

I have known Hillary Clinton for 25 years. I remember her as a great first lady who broke precedent in terms of the role that a first lady was supposed to play as she helped lead the fight for universal health care. I served with her in the United States Senate and know her as a fierce advocate for the rights of children.

Hillary Clinton will make an outstanding president and I am proud to stand with her here tonight.

I couldn’t watch earlier when all the pundits were talking about was the protesting (they’re trying to make parallel conventions, but they’d conveniently not say that Hillary united the convention with her speech). But everything I’ve see has been electric. And I watched last Monday, too, with Scott F’n Baio and Antonio Sabato Jr. (easily exceeded in star power by Demi Lovato belting out ‘Complicated’)

Let me be as clear as I can be. This election is not about, and has never been about, Hillary Clinton, or Donald Trump, or Bernie Sanders or any of the other candidates who sought the presidency. This election is not about political gossip. It’s not about polls. It’s not about campaign strategy. It’s not about fundraising. It’s not about all the things the media spends so much time discussing.

This election is about – and must be about – the needs of the American people and the kind of future we create for our children and grandchildren.

We need leadership which brings our people together and makes us stronger – not leadership which insults Latinos, Muslims, women, African-Americans and veterans – and divides us up.

By these measures, any objective observer will conclude that – based on her ideas and her leadership – Hillary Clinton must become the next president of the United States. The choice is not even close.

How closed primaries are unfair. How Southern states going early are unfair. How the Clinton campaign using the same tactics as they used in Nevada was unfair. I put that on Bernie, not on the general perception of Hillary as painted by years of GOP smears.

SANDERS: You’re going into this – Steve, you’re going into this demographic stuff, which I reject. That’s not my cup of tea.

INSKEEP: Although, you talked about it.

SANDERS: Yes. Well, here’s what you got. What you got is an African-American president. And the African-American community is very, very proud that this country has overcome racism and voted for him for president. And that’s kind of natural. You got a situation where the Republican Party has been strongly anti-immigration. And you’ve got a Hispanic community, which is looking to the Democrats for help. But that’s not important. You should not be basing your politics based on your color. What you should be basing your politics on is, how is your family doing?

Turns out he changed it to chocolate egg cream. This worked until Black Adam in his mortal form, and down on his luck, walked into a deli, saw the soda jerk preparing a chocolate egg cream for a kid, asked what it was, and ordered: “a chocolate egg cream?” At which point the seven lightnings were called down and he became Black Adam again.

    @Adam L Silverman:

Don’t get me wrong I liked the X Files and the monster of the week stuff was great. Overall though I think Fringe holds together as more coherent.

The nineties are when television was learning to get into long-term storytelling instead of just episodic stuff. X-Files didn’t do the best job of that, but it was part of a trend that was still feeling its way.

I like that era a lot, actually. The first show I watched regularly was Stargate SG-1 (much of it on reruns as it had already been on the air for a while), which was right in that sweet spot of “there are long term story arcs that are important, but it’s still episodic enough that you can jump right into the middle of it and enjoy it without knowing the entire backstory.” DS9 (until the very end, and that was understandable), too. I don’t *hate* modern “thirteen episodes, one continuous stories” like 24 or the Marvel/Netflix shows, but SG-1/DS9 is still my favorite format, I think.

I do not envy being in that position, and at some point, there is nothing as an outside party you can do for them; except hope logic reasserts itself and they see that getting Hillary into office does far more than just staying home, waiting for Trump to win and the Glorious Revolution to sweep in in the aftermath.

Any suggestion otherwise just shows you are not paying the least bit of attention, and therefore nothing will convince you besides the voices in your head.

A bunch of convention cops & security guys came into the hall to listen to Michelle’s speech. They stood, riveted, at the top of the stairs.

@bmoak: Yes, it was based on the McCain-Feingold rules that prevented externally funded opposition advertisements within so many days of the election (or something like that). The movie was billed as a 90 minute expose documentary that was largely rehashed debunked scandals from the 90s. The Supremes didn’t actually rule on what was appealed to them, instead they just overturned McCain-Feingold and the rules governing contributions.

I am way late on my DVR feed (at about 11:38 p.m. now), but MSNBC is interviewing some of the most pathetic Bernie dead-enders on the floor after his speech. I wonder how representative they are. None of the three I watched would admit to voting for Clinton in November. Maybe they’ll come around, I guess.

@Adam L Silverman: Only someone with an IQ of 80 could think “they did a great job tying it all together” for christsake. The entire alternate time track was so full of holes it looked like someone had pumped a couple hundred shotgun rounds into it, not to mention the laughably moronic bullshit like “pockets of low oxygen” on the streets of NYC.

Abrams can go fuck himself with a rusty chainsaw.

ETA: I came for the concepts, but when they went south I stayed for the characters, in particular John Noble’s two Walters.

ETA2: Abrams “getting bored & moving on” is about right. Sonofabitch should’ve had the whole thing worked out before he started, like Straczynski (sp?) for Babylon 5.

Right after that segment, they went back to the desk and Lawrence O’Donnell commented that he had just come form a focus group of Sanders supporters and they all said they were going to vote for Clinton and where in the heck did you get those pathetic souls from (I’m paraphrasing a bit.) An awkward moment as all the other MSNBC folks looked at each other like…are you going to respond? Because I got nothing.

    @Brachiator:

They were all pretty much Democrats in Disarray. Nothing about the speakers. Nothing about Sanders throwing his support to Clinton. I read a couple of them. Three or four paragraphs about Dems in Disarry, then, some outlining of the speakers, then the usual…pundit A thought things went well. Pundit B thought things sucked.

It’s fine pointing out the disarray, because, yes, there was some. But, in the context of the whole day and evening, it was never more than a sideshow. But, the media made it the main event.
