I was planning on making chicken piccata tonight, but I’ve been glued to my screen since Michelle Obama’s speech. I couldn’t watch earlier when all the pundits were talking about was the protesting (they’re trying to make parallel conventions, but they’d conveniently not say that Hillary united the convention with her speech). I’m liking where this is going – he’s doing a very good job of explaining the stakes, and basically telling his delegates that voting for Hillary Clinton is not only the right thing to do for the movement – it’s the *moral* thing to do. Well the people who I am referring to in my feed are friends and acquaintances whose attitudes turned nasty when the Bernie campaign decided to tell the whole world how very unfair it is that they were losing. This worked until Black Adam in his mortal form, and down on his luck, walked into a deli, saw the soda jerk preparing a chocolate egg cream for a kid,asked what it was, and ordered: “a chocolate egg cream?” At which point the seven lightnings were called down and he became Black Adam again.

Adam L Silverman
@Comrade Scrutinizer: Makes sense. Millennium fell apart under its own weight too.
Chris
@Adam L Silverman:
The nineties are when television was learning to get into long-term storytelling instead of just episodic stuff. X-Files didn’t do the best job of that, but it was part of a trend that was still feeling its way.
I like that era a lot, actually. The first show I watched regularly was Stargate SG-1 (much of it on reruns as it had already been on the air for a while), which was right in that sweet spot of “there are long term story arcs that are important, but it’s still episodic enough that you can jump right into the middle of it and enjoy it without knowing the entire backstory.” DS9 (until the very end, and that was understandable), too. I don’t *hate* modern “thirteen episodes, one continuous stories” like 24 or the Marvel/Netflix shows, but SG-1/DS9 is still my favorite format, I think.

Happened Saturday night. There was a fist fight that led to a gun being drawn in a theater in TN (I think, could be KY) that fortunately didn’t end in any shots being fired. Also happened over the weekend.

After Booker, Michelle, and Warren, Bernie was always going to be an anticlimax. I thought he was OK.
japa21
I have been almost as hard on Sanders as anyone else. But I will give him his due. He did a good job tonight. As far as the folks in the hall, I think most will be switched to Clinton supporters. There will be a few unreachable ones, but they are the ones that have never tried to find out what Clinton really stands for and only heard the corporate whore crap.
Miss Bianca
@Adam L Silverman: Oh, Lord…I’m glad I’m not the only one who thought that was a little off.
jl
@Eljai: It’s cynical and dishonest cable BS horse race bait. C-SPAN, and you tube had tyt floor interview clips that had plenty of Sanders delegates who were going to vote for HRC and explaining how they were trying to talk sense to the die-hards.
Quinerly
@FlipYrWhig:
Hopefully she can continue to whine….perhaps to her tattoo. She’s a delegate and doesn’t even know when the roll call is. But TPP!

@hueyplong: Really? His speech was only for angry white dudes? I though he made a damn good case for electing Hillary and for supporting a progressive platform. We do still all want that right? Or is it mostly about hating Bernie

@Quinerly: I HAVE NEVER HEARD THAT HILLARY CLINTON DID THINGS WHO IS SHE APART FROM THE WALL STREET AND TPP

Those people that MSNBC found were probably the example of the ‘dead-ender’ core I was talking about. I also seriously doubt any of them are over the age of 30, and really only know politics as the ideals in their own head instead of the morass of inter-personal reactions and interplay it actually is.
Chris
@Comrade Scrutinizer:
I couldn’t get into that. I tried, like three or four times, and jumping into the series at different points (TV reruns). And based on everything I read about it online, I liked the story just fine. I just can’t get into watching it. Pretty sure it’s the scripting/dialogue – I’ve heard a lot of other people say that that’s their biggest problem with the show.
Applejinx
@japa21: There’s months to go, during which we can all get busy showing what America can look like with Democrats on the rise. Those busters will come around. Bernie can find stuff for them to do so they feel like there’s a point to life (and politics) and they’ll come around by the general election. We’ve got months.

But the were both formed for the express purpose of sliming the Clintons. Wasn’t the CU Supreme Court case about a 90-minute hit piece on Hillary that was claimed to be “entertainment” and thus didn’t have to follow campaign finance and advertising rules?
Adam L Silverman
@different-church-lady: I recommend a digital probe thermometer!

@geg6:
The one who shocked me was a Black chick from Louisiana. If I understood correctly, this is her second convention. Bill actually was sitting kinda behind her. She really couldn’t articulate why she wouldn’t vote for Hillary. Word salad…she only trusts Bernie, he does what he says and she doesn’t agree with Hillary’s voting record.

hueyplong
@LeonS: You responded to a post made during the speech. Literate types probably would have seen more “hate” for BernieBros than for Bernie himself. I complimented him after the speech. I would have voted for him in the general had he won.
Quinerly
@bmoak:
That was kinda my point. If you try to explain the background of Citizens United to these morons they have no interest. They want to assume HRC supports it because of her Wall Street connections. I’ve had several conversations with these idiots. I know there is no persuading them. “She’s a corporate elitist!”

@Quinerly: You could see the pain in her voice and in her heart. These are people who are emotionally, not really logically, bound to Bernie Sanders, and now they are being asked, in some measure, to sever that bond.
And they simply do not want to until circumstances, aka Election Day, basically demands it of them.
I do not envy being in that position, and at some point, there is nothing as an outside party you can do for them; except hope logic reasserts itself and they see that getting Hillary into office does far more than just staying home, waiting for Trump to win and the Glorious Revolution to sweep in in the aftermath.
Applejinx
@Quinerly: If she really trusts Bernie, she’ll support Hillary and give her the vitally needed political cover to come right out of the gate like a left-wing Democrat with no fucks to give.
We are gonna do this, and the amount of support Hillary gets from Berners will shape the way she governs. 2016 is only the beginning.

Ok, even as a Bernie supporter, nay, *especially* as a Bernie supporter that pisses me off. Hillary bent over backward to accommodate Bernie (as I’m sure the commenters here have bitched about plenty). Any suggestion otherwise just shows you are not paying the least bit of attention, and therefore nothing will convince you besides the voices in your head.

A bunch of convention cops & security guys came into the hall to listen to Michelle’s speech. They stood, riveted, at the top of the stairs.

Seriously, you have to punish that behavior. Networks pull that junk because trolling draws eyeballs. You have to dry em out.

Good god Hugh Hewitt just said that Michelle Obama’s speech sparkled, compare it to Obama’s 2004 speech. I guess it was son good even he can’t deny it.

@Adam L Silverman: Oh, are you talking about the Bernie tattoo? Yeah, I’m wondering whether she’s really thought this thru’…I mean, the location, and all…that is…never mind.
I was thinking that the “rabbi lady chaser” or “lady rabbi chaser” was kind of off, too.

@geg6: I do not know. Most likely because they got him before he could light the place up.
LeonS
@Cacti: Given that old people have been making these complaints for thousands of years, and probably longer, I won’t hold my breath. But we keep surviving each generation. And looking around at the actual state of things it seems like us old folks have no place to be arrogant.
Adam L Silverman
@bmoak: Yes, it was based on the McCain-Feingold rules that prevented externally funded opposition advertisements within so many days of the election (or something like that). The movie was billed as a 90 minute expose documentary that was largely rehashed debunked scandals from the 90s. The Supremes didn’t actually rule on what was appealed to them, instead they just overturned McCain-Feingold and the rules governing contributions.

I am way late on my DVR feed (at about 11:38 p.m. now), but MSNBC is interviewing some of the most pathetic Bernie dead-enders on the floor after his speech. I wonder how representative they are. None of the three I watched would admit to voting for Clinton in November. Maybe they’ll come around, I guess.
Adam L Silverman
@Miss Bianca: Yep.

@hueyplong: My apologies. It’s hard to resist the urge to post a comment until you’ve read all 300+ comments.

@Omnes Omnibus: @Omnes Omnibus: Not bright enough to deduce someone’s intelligence over a comment about how many people voted for a candidate (which if anything was a low ball). I was responding to “Bernie and his supporters are not really Democrats so they can all go to hell.”
You really think the idea that not having any Bernie supporters vote for Hillary would cost the election is controversial? Well I guess I’m not bright enough to know the difference, but at least I’m not an asshole.

@Mnemosyne:
I wouldn’t blame her if she had. Eight years of solid racist nastiness flung her way, as well as at her daughters and husband–she has to be overjoyed at the prospect of getting out of the way of that.
And that speech. I think we need to hear more from the other eloquent orator in the Obama family.

@Adam L Silverman: Just FTR Fringe went off the rails about a year before it ended. Abrams didn’t have a fucking clue where he was going & wrapped the thing up with chicken wire & scotch tape & I will despise him forever for the travesty it ended up.

So, these are the headlines on Google’s news Convention coverage>>>
Our liberal media at work…
Adam L Silverman
@Uncle Cosmo: The time shift in the final season was a bit strange. But even with it it was still enjoyable. I get the impression that Abrams starts on stuff, then has attention/focus issues as he starts to move on and work on other projects.
Uncle Cosmo
@Adam L Silverman: Only someone with an IQ of 80 could think “they did a great job tying it all together” for christsake. The entire alternate time track was so full of holes it looked like someone had pumped a couple hundred shotgun rounds into it, not to mention the laughably moronic bullshit like “pockets of low oxygen” on the streets of NYC.
Abrams can go fuck himself with a rusty chainsaw.
ETA: I came for the concepts, but when they went south I stayed for the characters, in particular John Noble’s two Walters.
ETA2: Abrams “getting bored & moving on” is about right. Sonofabitch should’ve had the whole thing worked out before he started, like Straczynski (sp?) for Babylon 5.
Steeplejack
@Steeplejack:
Okay, so it wasn’t just me. As I read the thread I see that some real-time commenters noticed the parade of (young) Bernie dead-enders that MSNBC glommed onto. Sad!
ETA: It’s weird. I hate that “also, too” has slipped into common use—“She’s inside your head!”—but somehow I feel okay with the Trumpian “Sad!” Go figure.

I am not seeing a problem here, nor any conventional wisdom consensus.

Right after that segment, they went back to the desk and Lawrence O’Donnell commented that he had just come form a focus group of Sanders supporters and they all said they were going to vote for Clinton and where in the heck did you get those pathetic souls from (I’m paraphrasing a bit.) An awkward moment as all the other MSNBC folks looked at each other like…are you going to respond? Because I got nothing.
Groucho48
@Brachiator:
They were all pretty much Democrats in Disarray. Nothing about the speakers. Nothing about Sanders throwing his support to Clinton. I read a couple of them. Three or four paragraphs about Dems in Disarry, then, some outlining of the speakers, then the usual…pundit A thought things went well. Pundit B thought things sucked.
It’s fine pointing out the disarray, because, yes, there was some. But, in the context of the whole day and evening, it was never more than a sideshow. But, the media made it the main event.

I live out of the country and couldn’t watch Michelle’s speech live. Just watched it. Holy s#!t. That’s 15 minutes of speaking to rival MLK. I think she might actually be a better speaker than Barack.
What do we have to do to get her to run for office?

I’d love to watch Barack & Michelle do something like “Meet The Press,” facing off on the issues. The nation’s collective IQs would rise by 25 points in the first 10 minutes of their discussion.
