Balloon Juice

Come for the politics, stay for the snark.

Is it negotiation when the other party actually wants to shoot the hostage?

Republicans are radicals, not conservatives.

Insiders who complain to politico: please report to the white house office of shut the fuck up.

Republicans don’t want a speaker to lead them; they want a hostage.

Technically true, but collectively nonsense

We’ve had enough carrots to last a lifetime. break out the sticks.

It’s time for the GOP to dust off that post-2012 autopsy, completely ignore it, and light the party on fire again.

Republicans seem to think life begins at the candlelight dinner the night before.

Damn right I heard that as a threat.

The truth is, these are not very bright guys, and things got out of hand.

Schmidt just says fuck it, opens a tea shop.

🎶 Those boots were made for mockin’ 🎵

Not all heroes wear capes.

Infrastructure week. at last.

Putting aside our relentless self-interest because the moral imperative is crystal clear.

People are complicated. Love is not.

The words do not have to be perfect.

You can’t love your country only when you win.

I was promised a recession.

Sadly, there is no cure for stupid.

Only Democrats have agency, apparently.

A Senator Walker would be an insult to the state and the nation.

I’d try pessimism, but it probably wouldn’t work.

It’s the corruption, stupid.

    Just when I’d gotten my nose clear after the mother of the Orlando victim spoke. But it was such a wonderful, wonderful visual that she had those two young men supporting her through the whole thing.

    Apparently days 1 and 2 of the DNC got higher TV viewerships than the corresponding RNC days. Apparently Michelle Obama, Bernie Sanders, and Bill Clinton were bigger draws than the general manager of Trump Winery and some washed up TV actors. Who knew?

    It’s nutpicking, I know, but Trump is doing a Reddit AMA at some point tonight, and here is the lead-in to one of the questions:

    America has a proud tradition of stealing the most brilliant and talented people from countries around the world for ourselves. Albert Einstein, Wernher von Braun, Arnold Schwarzenegger, Melania Trump… the list goes on and on.

    Lost my job today while recovering from heart failure over the weekend. Was hoping to be able to rearrange my work schedule to accommodate working remotely, but I was literally just hooked up to dialysis when I got a call terminating me.
    In case anyone was wondering, I did call the Houston Citizen Asst line and was told they only deal with civil stuff, and it doesn’t matter anyway because the company can make up any reason to fire me (literally told me I would have to prove they fired me because I was in the hospital). In a state of shock, but if anyone has any suggestions (preferably not “sue”, as I am in a very weakened state and don’t think I’d live through that much stress) to get some kind of relief, I’m all ears.

    Thanks everyone for the well-wishes. This has been a rough year as well as rough decade (I started dialysis in 2011). Most years are thankfully uneventful, but this one has been like a lifetime of karmic transgressions coming due one after another. I come here quite often, as I can read the posts and comments and feel a bit normal. But this past week has pushed me further than I thought I was capable of going. I though rock bottom was the week after my house flooded, when the gas company shut my gas off after they spontaneously changed my account and stopped autopaying. But that just served to take a little more out of me.
    I’m frankly exhausted by this stuff. I had my vascular surgeon tell me chemo patients have it easier, but thought he was being a bit silly. Then I started seeing the level that society will grind you down if you don’t advertise your illness on your head. Not very inspirational, but it is devastating that when you’re down, so many find ways to ride you on the way.

    And the terrible part is, she’s right. And it is the whitest thing about me.

    @Keith P.:
    “Right to work” just means you can’t be required to pay union dues as a condition of employment. “At will” employment is the norm in the US, but all that means is you can be fired for any reason as long as it isn’t the wrong reason. And firing somebody for a real or perceived disability is definitely a “wrong reason.”

    Do these things in no particular order but do them NOW:

    (1) Call HR and ask for a formal termination letter setting forth the reason for your dismissal.
    (2) Contact an employment discrimination attorney.
    (3) Contact the EEOC.

    The EEOC will sometimes bring suit in their own name on behalf of an aggrieved employee, but more often they engage in a mediation process you might find more congenial than litigation.

    You do need a lawyer, and if you can’t afford one, you should call the Texas Bar Association. Most big firms will donate a certain number of pro bono hours for tax relief. State and local bar associations usually know about this. And they also host an open house for free lawyer consultation once a month. You’re not in any position to go now but maybe someone could go for you to find out your options. This is just terrible.

    @Keith P.: You should talk to a lawyer immediately. There must be contingency fee attorneys who would be willing to listen to your story and tell you what they think. Try to find someone good and professional. There are a lot of bottom feeders who may not have clients’ interests at heart. I don’t know how you’d go about finding one – is there a yelp for attorneys?

    If you think you can’t manage that, at least call the local EEOC and speak to someone there.

    Your former employer is in some jeopardy I think. They should be willing to do something for you to make you go away without suing or without going all the way with a suit. It is totally worth a shot. They’ve treated you badly and they should pay – try to get everything you can. Good luck.

    @gogol’s wife:

    It’s 85% of the country, so they have a lot of different opinions, I’m sure! There’s a lot of nostalgia for “empire,” whether Soviet or Tsarist.

    I have a friend who used to study Russian/Soviet history in college, and according to him, Putin’s leaning on fairly generic nationalism and nostalgia. Rooting for Russian Orthodox religion *and* pining for the days of the USSR simultaneously, that sort of thing. As near as I can tell it’s the same basic incoherent yearnings that, closer to home, powered Brexit and the Trump campaign.

    Am I the only one bothered by the background on the screen at the convention? It sure looks (on the TV) like they built a wall.

    It’s supposed to be an ultra close-up of a flag (I believe); showing how the threads weave together to create the whole cloth.

    I see it easily because I’m a fiber/weaving person. It may not translate well for everyone.

    Call the Social Security office and tell them you need to file for total and permanent disabililty (not a quick thing).

    Look for a lawyer who specializes in Social Security issues and ask for help with your disability application, they get paid by the SS settlement.

    Since your income shot to 0 you are eligible for food stamps. There is probably an office which provides emergency assistance.

    Find where to file for unemployment.

    @lamh36: posted over at LGF and will do the same here…

    I tear up every time I see her speak… why? Because I know that she was one of the few blue dogs that came home and allowed the ACA to pass. She took out a full page ad in the local rag and laid it all out, why she was voting yes and what she felt the consequences were if she didn’t. Within a year, her offices were vandalized and she ended up near death.

    I was raised to believe that we’re all Americans and while we disagree on things (sometimes a great many things), one thing that rallies us all together is personal tragedy. Instead, what took place was that less than two months after nearly dying, the GOP was calling for there to be a special election to fill her slot. The AZ state lege refused to hear any bills submitted for gun control, but did allow the designation of a state handgun to be passed. That didn’t happen here, whispers that she’s a vegetable and we HAVE to remove her were whispered. A sitting person in the US Congress was nearly assassinated and the House couldn’t even get a gun control bill passed without the GOP poison pilling it to death.

    The Dems held the seat in the special election, but the GOP poured more money into the race, Ron Barber won again, but barely, so they dumped more money into the race and we ended up with Martha McSally instead, to carry on the legacy and naturally, she’s pretty much in lockstep with all of the other GOP claptrap.

    Their fetish of worship to the NRA nearly killed her and the NRA and the GOP dumped so much money into the race to keep her voice silenced. We all remember the Palin surveyor symbols and outrage that how dare we accuse them or targeting…

    because of all of that, I hate those fuckers with a passion of a thousand burning suns and now these fuckers are advocating (Fuck you, Chuck Todd) outside elements being used to commit espionage in the name of furthering their electoral prospects.

    there are times where I just simply want to walk up and punch Todd straight in the face and meet the guy who whispers the spin in the ears of the folks in front of the screen and put his balls in a jar.

    @J R in WV: I’ve been told very frequently that disability for a dialysis patient is relatively cut and dry. My first social worker (who was terrible) said that because I work at a desk, I couldn’t get it, but every other social worker I’ve talked to and every other patient has said that I am certainly able to. My father went through the lawyer stuff when he lost some toes, but my case is a bit more boilerplate. I’ve hesitated all this time because I’d have to give up my house, since it would be a huge income hit (I’m a senior software developer) and I figured I could always get remote work. But remote work has not been as available as I thought (last one I attempted wanted me out of state 1 week per quarter), and going to an office *is* physically taxing; I currently have to walk across the parking lot (formerly up stairs) and across the building to sit down(I sent my “I need to work out a different work arrangement” email after nearly passing out just getting to my desk)
    Right now I am giving some thought to it. I *think* my social worker is in on Friday, but regardless, I do think I just have to file for disability given my current situation. The office is a couple of miles from my house, and it looks like I will have some free time next week :)

    Weighing in with best wishes, and some non-work-related advice. Most importantly, take care of yourself. I’m a fellow CHF-sufferer and, believe me I know: stress is a killer.

    You should speak with the hospital social worker about applying for Social Security Disability Insurance as soon as possible. It’s a long process, and it’s best to get started right away. You may have to fill in the gap with Public Assistance, such as it is. Taking care of your income concerns will go a long way toward easing your stress. If you get no satisfaction from the hospital social worker–always a possibility–seek out advocacy organizations for the disabled.

    @SiubhanDuinne: I should practice that [email protected]Vhh: I think they’re being subsidized by someone or something. Actually, I think the whole Bernie campaign was an exercise in rodent procreation with the intent of destroying the Democratic party and Bernie may or may not have been an unwitting participant.

    @Keith P.:

    I’m truly sorry for your misfortune. Life can be a real struggle. I hope you can find the support you need to get you through all the difficulties ahead.

    @Keith P.:

    Keith, I don’t have any useful advice for you, but I am very sorry to read this, and I wish you all the best.

    @Keith P.: Keith, I’m so sorry. If there’s other support you can try to get from the state department of human services try to. They usually have disability advocates.
    Even if you’re not on disability benefits.

    @Keith P.: I hope not Keith. With less stress you might be able to get stronger. Ask for the help you need from anyone, and let us know too.

    Much as I’ve come to dislike Sanders personally, I give him the benefit of the doubt (pending further relevations). He was a lifetime leftie-crank who got lucky in his timing, and when his campaign turned out to be potentially destructive to the Democrats, the Repub ratfvckers were (as always) ready to jump aboard the Bernie Barge.

    Seriously–no one remembers Platten’s husband is a reader and promoted her before she got big? Cole even put 1000 Ships video on the front page.

    @dmsilev: Melania’s “professional” website’s been yanked, redirects to Trump’s campaign website. Too many questions about the false claim she graduated from university.
