    She spoke of her mother in endearing terms…something NONE of the Trump children or his wife even attempted to do half as well.

    I loved Bill’s telling of the love story the other day, but my daughter (who will be a reliable top-to-bottom Democratic voter on Nov 8 but is not super-thrilled by Hillary) was underwhelmed by it. For her, she said it came off as Bill saying “me, me, me” with Hillary only an occasional side character in his autobiography.

    My daughter’s theory is that reactions to Bill’s speech was generational.

    I don’t know how you debate someone who is willing to say anything, lie about anything, make up facts willy-nilly. But I believe that this Hillary will fricassee him without breaking a sweat.

    She’s always had a ready laugh and a warmth that comes across in small-group settings (I was lucky enough to hear her once in a small room).     But the thing that genuinely scares them about HRC.. is not only that she is more energetic than them, but also that she deliberately chooses to use that energy for OTHER people, which they simply can’t comprehend – because their entire “party” is based on FYIGM.

    President Clinton does have to actually do that. Not just meme it.

    On the bright side I think she’d prefer to. In our country’s history, it has not always been a winning strategy to aspire in that direction. For decades, it was the kiss of death. I have some cautious hopes that this orgy of repurposed patriotism is worth its orchestration: I see some decent people in my circles (not busters) going ‘ummm Reagan was bad, remember?’ but I’m not sure their alarm is warranted.

    I’m reminded that at the close of WWII, we were all ‘America FUCK YEAH’, but the country believed in things. It wasn’t a matter of ‘jingoistic automatically bad, power automatically corrupt’. Maybe it was the contrast with where Germany was at. Maybe we’re there again, but Germany is here among us.

    Dibs on being ‘the Allies’ and not ‘the Axis’…

    @Emma: They do. He’s done, politically. It may be because he’s figured out the Clinton administration are going to be able to crossbreed radically progressive AND jingoistic ‘U! S! A!’ shouting, and get away with it. I wouldn’t have believed that possible but I’m seeing it, and I think it’s going to work.

    It’s like an active, shooting war against being a neo-whateveritis asshole hypocritical soulless monster. With a WWII plucky loveable interracial interfaith cast on the side of the good guys, and casting call’s open, all hands on deck. It’s goddamn IRRESISTIBLE.

    And it’s not even fake. I think people wouldn’t be crossing these streams if they didn’t ‘get it’. We are actually going to go ‘america fuck yeah!’ against all Bernie Sanders’ pet demons, and a bunch of other problems he didn’t prioritize.

    He’s now mainstream, and not particularly effective compared to what the Democrats are fixing to do. I completely understand how sad he is. He’s Al Shepard to John Glenn. Turns out the first suborbital space flight was cool but people went bonkers over the first orbital space shot, and there was nothing Shepard could do about it other than let the BIG hero sweep everybody up in his wake, inclusively.

    It’s now up to Clinton to be inclusive and allow Bernie to follow along in his own revolution. Consider that reality if you’re mad at Bernie for looking cranky. His only hope for being ‘the leader’ again would be if she failed, sold out, went back on what’s being promised. I see his sourness as evidence he’s convinced she won’t do any such thing. It must be very obvious to an insider like himself.
