Balloon Juice

Come for the politics, stay for the snark.

Fundamental belief of white supremacy: white people are presumed innocent, minorities are presumed guilty.

We’re watching the self-immolation of the leading world power on a level unprecedented in human history.

We’ve had enough carrots to last a lifetime. break out the sticks.

Republicans do not trust women.

Washington Post Catch and Kill, not noticeably better than the Enquirer’s.

They think we are photo bombing their nice little lives.

White supremacy is terrorism.

A norm that restrains only one side really is not a norm – it is a trap.

It’s easy to sit in safety and prescribe what other people should be doing.

Republicans don’t want a speaker to lead them; they want a hostage.

Dear elected officials: Trump is temporary, dishonor is forever.

Republicans got rid of McCarthy. Democrats chose not to save him.

They don’t have outfits that big. nor codpieces that small.

There are a lot more evil idiots than evil geniuses.

This year has been the longest three days of putin’s life.

Historically it was a little unusual for the president to be an incoherent babbling moron.

We are builders in a constant struggle with destroyers. keep building.

Sometimes the world just tells you your cat is here.

They punch you in the face and then start crying because their fist hurts.

Anyone who bans teaching American history has no right to shape America’s future.

There is no right way to do the wrong thing.

Perhaps you mistook them for somebody who gives a damn.

This fight is for everything.

With all due respect and assumptions of good faith, please fuck off into the sun.

Good morning from Poznan! Today’s plan involves returning to Warsaw, since my flight out is fairly early tomorrow (noon, which is early if I started the day with a three hour train ride). In Warsaw, I plan to hit the Jewish museum and the cathedral. I couldn’t get to Poznan’s cathedral because it was too far east from my hotel.

The weather is gross today. It’s a good day to ride a train and go to a museum.

I kinda wish I could feel the thrill of a candidate, like these guys do, but I need to see them govern to fall in love. I was dispassionate on Obama too until about 2 years into his presidency. But overall, she proved to be the most rational, credible choice. I’m glad I put aside personal anathema and gave both candidates a shot. Now, let’s win this thing.

@ruemara: That thrill stuff is pretty rare. A few of us who were in Operation Dewey Canyon Three talked right after Kerry got the nomination. We recalled how we laughed at this “officer” who acted like he was in charge the week we were in DC. Obviously we needed someone like him to give the remarks to the Senate committee but the VVAW was made up, by and large, enlisted. We wanted him to win but were sure were not “thrilled”. One thing that struck me last night was the rah-rah “patriotism”. Kerry tried that too and it didn’t mean shit. “Reporting for duty” just made him more of a target and when he didn’t stand up to the Swift Boat fuckers right away he was sunk.

PHILADELPHIA — (NYT) Hillary Diane Rodham Clinton, who sacrificed personal ambition for her husband’s political career and then rose to be a globally influential figure, became the first woman to accept a major party’s presidential nomination on Thursday night, a prize that generations of American women have dreamed about for one of their own.

while I thought that the reverend from NC was an incredibly powerful speaker with an awesome message, I really believe what is going to turn this election on its head is if the DNC runs Mr. and Mrs Khan’s speech on a wide distribution. THAT message puts paid to all of the fucking Islamophobia that runs apeshit over in conservative circles and should (no guarantees because some of those fuckers are truly willfully evil) drive a dagger though the heart of anyone who has been fed an unhealthy dose of that shit and bring them back into the light.

With a follow up by the diverse military presence that essentially stated that Trump isn’t strong, he’s a fucking narcissist with a messiah complex should also strip away some of that neo-con veneer that the GOP has lacquered themselves in.

@ruemara: I donno what part of life you are in, but I left “falling in love” with a political leader way back in my 20s.

Leaders in government are civil servants. They have a tough job to do and any deeper affection is earned by the competency of their efforts.

Hillary did good, as we say down here. She is not a big room speaker and she performed well, considering that. She was not helped by the dynamics of having to contrast Trump’s lack of policy by making this a speech about policy. Jon Favreau (Obama Speech writer, 09 to13) has some simple rules for great speeches and he tells how acceptance speeches are hard to fit in that mold. One rule: Shorter is better than longer. Hillary’s speech needed about 10 minutes edited away.

But’s its over and it’s good. In contravention to some cheerless comments I saw earlier yesterday, the Bernie folks were not an issue. Hillary and Tim are now free to go hop a bus and win some votes in PA & OH.

The speakers and the audience really made the idea/philosophy from star trek feel possible. Infinite Diversity Infinite Combinations. We united in a celebration of our diversity and the strength of it! I’m no trekker but I have loved the series for that idea since I was little. Seeing it demonstrated nationally, much less politically has been a pipe dream since W and 9 11. Hillary drew it all together into a glorious whole with that speech. I’m gonna remember this as I do Obama winning the presidential election in 08.

The fear and rage at the heart (base?) of the movement burned off whatever was left of the facade of politics-as-usual for those who would see (*cough* MSM *cough*).

I had to rage quit out of guild chat in Final Fantasy XIV tonight because of an asshole Bernie Bro. Someone commented that he’d meant to watch the speech, just because it was historic, and he wondered if people showed enthusiasm. I mentioned that there were a lot of women of all ages who were pretty enthusiastic, and I added that it was pretty amazing for me to see something in two different elections that I’d dreamed about as a kid.

So this dude replied, “Oh, you’ve always dreamed about the Democrats rigging an election for the candidate who will best serve their corporate masters?”

A couple of people noted that the system has always been rigged in one way or another. I didn’t really want to get into it so I tried to joke about it, pointed out that as a born and raised Chicagoan, I always assume the system is rigged. Bro sneered about how Trump was going to win because the Democrats are idiots. I gently mentioned that Hillary won because more Democratic voters chose her in the primary, and was he really calling all of those voters idiots because they chose a different candidate than the one he supported?”

    Yes, he replied, he was.

    I said, “Wow, thanks.”

    “You’re welcome.”

I was hungry, exhausted, and the Giants were losing yet again, so I quit the game before I damaged my laptop or said something I’d regret, like, “Shitheads like you are one of the main reasons a lot of folks didn’t vote for Bernie, so take your purity trolling and fuck off.”

I should mention that I’m in an LGBT guild whose members are overwhelmingly gay white men in their 20’s and early 30’s. For the most part, they’re a good group, but there are definitely times–like today–where I want to shake some of them and yell, “Women exist, even gay women! Also, I’m old enough to be your mother so don’t try to lecture me on how the world works.”

Sorry, I just had to get that out.
