Balloon Juice

Come for the politics, stay for the snark.

“Jesus paying for the sins of everyone is an insult to those who paid for their own sins.”

“Can i answer the question? No you can not!”

Conservatism: there are some people the law protects but does not bind and others who the law binds but does not protect.

And we’re all out of bubblegum.

When do the post office & the dmv weigh in on the wuhan virus?

White supremacy is terrorism.

Optimism opens the door to great things.

Is it negotiation when the other party actually wants to shoot the hostage?

Republicans in disarray!

Sitting here in limbo waiting for the dice to roll

New McCarthy, same old McCarthyism.

They fucked up the fucking up of the fuckup!

“What are Republicans afraid of?” Everything.

Republicans are the party of chaos and catastrophe.

Fuck the extremist election deniers. What’s money for if not for keeping them out of office?

Not all heroes wear capes.

“Everybody’s entitled to be an idiot.”

Only Democrats have agency, apparently.

This fight is for everything.

Their freedom requires your slavery.

Something needs to be done about our bogus SCOTUS.

Speaking of republicans, is there a way for a political party to declare intellectual bankruptcy?

Republicans don’t want a speaker to lead them; they want a hostage.

So it was an October Surprise A Day, like an Advent calendar but for crime.

Some cheerful morning calesthenics, courtesy of faithful commentor Schrodinger’s Cat.

I can’t bear to start writing about the Rio Olympics yet, and it’s too early in the morning EDT to talk any more about the self-ambulatory non-stop dumpster fire…

What’s on the agenda for this particular Hump Day?

It’s been 20 years since the Atlanta Olympics and 32 since LA. I guess being lucky enough to attend both makes me especially interested.

I worked multiple Olympic events for a sponsor. I would be on-site for two weeks before the games, work them, and tear down in about 5. Hard work, but so much fun to be with a great group of people that knew their jobs, helped others if needed, and got to work with locals.

Also, I just watched the Boys of 36 on my TiVo – about the men’s rowing victory at the 1936 Olympics. They did a good job on the documentary, but the book, The Boys in the Boat, is so much better.

Read the book and then find a local rowing club where you can give it a try. Rowing is addicting and a great low-impact workout. I’m 46 and have only been rowing for 18 months. I wish I had started sooner!

My office is located five blocks south of the Zika virus outbreak in Miami. On the upside, a mosquito would have to go up seven floors and make it deep into the office to find me.

There are so many signs about Rio-it is scary. I wish that our athletes would just go, do their events, and leave. If there are no athletes left to march in the closing ceremony, oh well.

I fulfilled a long time dream of mine yesterday, I voted for Chief Wanna Dubie. Always before he ran in a race just outside my county/district/whatever, but this time he is running statewide (US senate). Kanter, the Dem nominee was always going to win the primary (he did) and w/o a doubt will lose to Blunt (he’s not too sharp) come Nov. I’ll be working for Chris Koster who is facing off against the bought and paid for subsidiary of unknown people* EricGreitensForPresident** (NAVY SEAL!***) in the MO governors race.

    * $1.975 million donation to Eric Greitens’ campaign this week marks the single largest political contribution in Missouri history to an individual candidate from the group “Seals for Truth”.

** he reserved this addy 7 years ago

*** all his campaign signs tell you so. i hear his tv ads will just blow you away.

@Central Planning: I was a little skinny guy in college and coxed on our team (the coxswain is the little guy in the back with the megaphone in 8’s, some 4’s and even some 2’s). I’m WAAAY out of coxswain weight now (120 lb or less). I also did a lot of teaching in our community summer program. We had a “masters” program specifically designed for novice adults and I used to love going out on the water with those guys and teaching them. At that level, the boat with the best technique wins every time. It’s much more important than strength.

Always thought I’d try rowing myself after I graduated (I know the basics of technique and have actually rowed competitively, if you can call it that, in joke “coxswain races”) but never got around to it. And I live in Philadelphia, which is probably the capital of amateur rowing in the US. There’s a whole stretch of rowing clubs along the Schuykill called “boathouse row”. Buddy of mine trained with one of them and led their boat to the Olympics.

It’s a pretty common limit, and I would blow past it including the 5 cats, but the cats are getting the third floor as their domain, so I doubt anyone will be able to tell from the ground even if they sit in the windows all day. I have two old dogs and two middle aged ones, and of the cats, two also are old enough that they may not have many more years either. @Big R: I could usually get into the low 120s by racing season but that got harder and harder. I’m WAAAY over that now.

I didn’t quite have the brash personality to cox the varsity 8, but my strength was always with the novices. I could take a boat of new rowers out and win almost every time against their equally inexperienced cohorts. One day I pissed off the freshman coach the week before a big race because I had the second boat, the spares, and we kept beating the pants off his hand-picked first team.

At that level, it’s all technique. How much you avoid drag by good balance and getting your oars clear of the water. And how good your rhythm is.

Corey Lewandowski questioning if President Obama got into Harvard as a US citizen on CNN

Trump’s birther campaign is back and CNN is promoting it again. Birtherism actually has a lot in common with voter fraud trutherism. They take a mundane, rule-bound state recording process and add a ton of woo-woo and “questions” and no one ever walks thru the actual steps of what the process involves. That would be a really boring show- “let’s visit with the clerk at the vital records office!” :)

I still find people who attach magical import to the “original” birth certificate. I take a ridiculous amount of pleasure in waving my hand and saying “oh, you can get a duplicate original for 15 dollars- we just need the raised seal”

I’m tempted to say “if you lost that, does that mean that’s all she wrote- now no one will ever know… for sure?”

Well, fuck – I bought a nice Microsoft Surface back in February to have as a working laptop. It is sleek, fast, has a great battery.

Back when I bought it, I synced it to my office exchange server. I made the mistake about a month in on clicking the “update” on its office suite, which made syncing it to the exchange server impossible until we do our next exchange upgrade, probably about a year from now.

When I booted it this morning (had to recharge it), it took forever, as it was in the midst of the Windows 10 upgrade. Now the thing is upgefucht and basically a $1700 brick. Webpages are about as slow as a 1996 aol dialup, the controls are sluggish and even the resident programs are slow to load.

I can’t imagine anyone bringing kids or babies to a Trump rally exposing them to foul and vicious language from Trump and the crowd and the danger of kids getting trampled when the crowd turns on a protester. This 10 year old kid would probably join in in thrashing a protester with mom’s encouragement. Insanity.

They are also pushing the Bill Clinton talked him into running to throw the election to Hillary idea.I don’t think he gives a darn about the GOP or if the situation was different the democrats. He only cares about himself. Trump is the ultimate uncaged ID that the GOP has been cultivating for the past 40 years. By luck or planning he tapped into the public anger at the system.

On a slightly diffewrent topic :

FBI Allegedly Waited Months To Warn Democrats Of Suspected Russian Role In Hack. And in months of follow-up conversations about the DNC’s network security, the FBI did not warn party officials that the attack was being investigated as Russian espionage, the sources said.

The lack of full disclosure by the FBI prevented DNC staffers from taking steps that could have reduced the number of confidential emails and documents stolen, one of the sources said. Instead, Russian hackers whom security experts believe are affiliated with the Russian government continued to have access to Democratic Party computers for months during a crucial phase in the U.S. presidential campaign, the source said.

Maybe a conspiracy theory but FBI director Comey is a long standing Republican and has been after the Clinton’s since 1996 so he sat on the full extent of the breach.

Or go back to the 2012 debates and people booing a deployed soldier because he was gay. @peach flavored shampoo: I joined the Baltimore Rowing Club for about 5 years back in the 80s, loved it but ran out of time for it when we had kids. Liked 4s and 8s best because swinging the 11 foot oar was a gas.

As novices we shared cox duties and I unfortunately met the qualifications: small, loud voice, and I knew port from starboard. And could guide the boat into a smooth landing at the dock.

@amk: So, the “Democrat Mole” story might give the Party elite some wiggle room at trying to separate themselves from Trump, as long as no one insists on, like, evidence. It’s hard to see how Trump would agree to such an arrangement, unless we adopt the “useful idiot” theory and say something like Obama trolled him into it at the WHCA dinner a couple of years ago. But even that wouldn’t explain the pandering to Trump of the GOP and the right wing noise machine, which includes Joe and Mika. It also doesn’t address the Trump True Believers, who will not be parted from their Leader, and who, if stripped from the GOP, will cause a significant reduction in their base of support.

Our Dems won the jungle primary for the LD seats against incumbent Republicans, but we have to beat the same people in November Even being within striking distance of an incumbent is good and now they have to worry about being in striking distance of us.

“Liberal media” is the meme that started it all, I think. The media was never liberal, but in the mid-20th century some of their reporting was confirming things liberals had been saying all along – that black people were treated horrifically in America, that American troops were committing war crimes in Vietnam, that people like Nixon and Hoover were using the intelligence and security agencies to attack their political opponents. Then eventually along came Reagan who told everyone that nah, don’t listen to all that stuff, it’s not that you’ve been wrong all this time, it’s just that the liberal media hates America and wants to make you believe bad things about it.

The notion that it’s okay to reject any fact you don’t like because you don’t like it has been key to the conservative movement ever since, and has eventually grown to become their defining trait.

In early 1972 I attended a talk by HE at Cornell. Got to the hall early to ensure a good seat. HE & Joanna Russ were sitting a few rows down chatting when a couple with a baby came up. The fellow said shyly, Harlan? Harlan, remember me?

Omigod, I don’t believe it! Ellison shouted & shot to his feet. How are you? And this…this is yours?? Harlan proceeded to effuse all over the poor kid like a doting uncle. Eventually the family sat down over to the side.

Time came, one of the SF club kids introduced Russ who introduced Ellison, & he got as far as “It’s really great to be here tonight” before the baby started shrieking at ~150 dB.

Instantly Harlan’s head snapped over in that direction & he shouted at the top of his lungs,

    FUUUUUUUUUCK YOU!!

The audience sat there stunned. Who talks to a baby like that?? But, astoundingly, the screaming stopped.

And Harlan Ellison went on with his shpiel as if nothing was amiss. (TBH it was one of the most entertaining 3.5 hours of my life, mostly about his experiences with TV as an author & story editor, including the notorious “Paynesville OH Revenge Story” & a reading of “Silent in Gehenna”. Been that way for a long time: give the American people a choice between someone who talks tough and someone who is tough and, sadly, they’ll often take the former. In its modern form I think it started in 1980, when we channel-surfed past a war veteran in the primary and a former submariner in the general in favor of the amiable dunce who’d spent his war years making propaganda films and told lies about having been there to liberate Auschwitz. Same again with George W. Bush, a draft-dodger, over John McCain and John Kerry.

I expect a lot of Repubs will be saying that, especially if Trump loses. But even if it’s true, it’s irrelevant. What does it say about the GOP that it was completely suckered by that tactic? What does it say about Republicans that, when you run a person who looks and talks like a terrible left-wing caricature of what the left accuses the GOP of being like… most of their voters come to him like flies to shit? If Clinton really did talk Trump into running, all he did was expose how broken the party was, not break it.
