Our own Schroedinger’s Cat reminds us of the holiday, and shares a rather fascinating video:
… Home to every religion in the world and twenty-two official languages; India’s amazing linguistic and religious diversity is its strength. This diversity is reflected in Indian art, be it Hindustani classical music or popular Hindi cinema. India’s struggles are many and it still has a long way to go before it reaches its full potential, but those are topics for another day.
But today I want to celebrate this milestone by celebrating India’s unity in diversity. First broadcast on 15 August 1988 on Doordarshan, “Mile sur mera tumhara, to sur bane hamara ( when my note (musical) melds with yours, it becomes our note)”… Bhimsen Joshi gets its started in Hindi, then we travel the length and breadth of India, from north to south and from east to west, ending in Hindi again. I counted fourteen languages including Hindi…
Click over to SC’s blog for a list of languages, and a growing compilation of the celebrities involved.

Happy Birthday, India! Has anyone been talking about Trump’s teleprompter reading skills? Just watched a clip of today’s speech and it was hilarious!

Does India qualify as a “no immigration” country per the DT Plan on behalf of those Mumbai (sp?) terror attacks of a few years ago? Plus the dark skin, the funny headgear and beards, the scary myriad dialects, and also, did I mention the dark skin and beards?

@Adam L Silverman: Gulab Jamuns and Ras gullas. India is # 1 in sugar consumption followed by the United States.
Adam L Silverman
@schrodinger’s cat: Okay, I’ll let it go this time… But only because I love that stuff. The wives of the Nepalese officers I supervised used to make them.

@Face: Correction: Those are separate languages not dialects. Funny head gear? Are you referring to Sikhs? Not as funny DT’s combover.
schrodinger's cat
@Adam L Silverman: Actually the Irani bakeries (run by Parsis who migrated from Iran in the early 20th century) have among the best cakes and pastries I have eaten. Also too, freshly made mango kulfi is the best!
Adam L Silverman
@schrodinger’s cat: I like kulfi too!
schrodinger's cat
@Adam L Silverman: Who doesn’t? Last time I was in India, we had gone to Lonavla on a weekend trip and I made myself sick by over indulging in kulfi. There was a store that made fresh kulfi on the other side of the street, where I was staying.
My personal favorites were fig kulfi and mango kulfi. Its like a richer version of Ben and Jerry’s ice-cream.

@schrodinger’s cat: Yup, the Sikhs. Harmless as can be, but the mouthbreathers always assume they’re Mooselum and scary.

I think we were figuring out the language in another thread and concluded that this year is India’s 70th birthday as an independent country, but its 70th anniversary as a country would be next year. Because English is effed up like that.

I wouldn’t call them celebrities, they are all accomplished artists and sportspeople and dominate their respective fields in India. They are not just famous for being famous, like a certain Presidential candidate or Kim K.

I am debt to India for their gracious acceptance of HH 14th Dalai Lama when he fled Tibet. Pretty much giving the finger to the Chinese. Happiest of Holidays to India, plus a deep bow to schrodinger’s cat for the heads up.

@Omnes Omnibus: My default mental picture of “Queen” is always Betty Windsor.
I was going to ask you a legal thing. Seems like right wingers are upset that Obama hasn’t jumped on their “mens rea reform” bandwagon. I’m guessing there’s some crime they’re trying to make legal or some innocuous activity they’re trying to outlaw. Any idea what”s behind it?

@Punchy: this is what I’m thinking. Let’s say Trump illegally takes $100 mil from his campaign funds. The republicans (even the never-Trump) are going to say that’s just good business. HRC is going to be busy president’n, and will have other things to worry about rather than face an (unjustified) outcry over prosecuting Trump for ripping off his contributors. What does it profit her to straighten things out for people that trusted him? Seems like a win-win

I just can’t believe this is a real retweet. But it appears to be. (It’s old, but still.)

http://www.heritage.org/research/reports/2015/09/the-pressing-need-for-mens-rea-reform
Its also in line with the long standing fringe argument that every American commits at least three crimes a day without knowing it.

Adam L Silverman
@Omnes Omnibus: You were expecting it to make actual sense? Either rational/logical or legal?
dmsilev
@Punchy: They might. Remember, the reason the FEC doesn’t do much is that they’re typically deadlocked between Democrats and Republicans. However, if Trump does something really stupid/illegal, the institutional GOP isn’t really going to be all that interested in covering for him, and might just want to throw the book at him as part of a “Trump? Never heard of the guy” effort.
Omnes Omnibus
@Adam L Silverman: I didn’t think that I was. OTOH, based on my reaction, something in me must have.

@lamh36: smdh. I feel helpless and like the filmer macandcheeks said, so tired of this.
Burnspbesq
@Adam L Silverman:
That. The argument is logically consistent, but it starts from a fucked-up premise.
In a world where Don Blankenship killed 29 miners and the only felony with which he could be charged was securities fraud, we need more, not less, criminal enforcement of regulatory sttutes.
And in related news, Ritzheimer pled guilty to one count of conspiracy to impede Federal officers. The maximum sentence, which he almost certainly won’t get, is six years.
Adam L Silverman
@Omnes Omnibus: I’m constantly amazed at the almost monomaniacal need to promote ideas rooted in the radical minority offshoot of Anti-Federalism known as Populist Constitutionalism that devolves everything about Liberty solely to the individual because every form of government and governance above the most local is, at best, proto-tyrannical.
Adam L Silverman
@Burnspbesq: Tracking and agree. And I saw the thing about Ritzheimer.

Omnes Omnibus
@Adam L Silverman: I have never delved deep enough into those swamps to know.
Villago Delenda Est
@Adam L Silverman: This sort of thing is the ultimate in tyranny. Liberty for a select few, serfdom for everyone else.
Adam L Silverman
@Omnes Omnibus: I’m reading Saul Cornell’s history of the 2nd Amendment. I’ve just gotten through the section where he explained how it was developed, what the real disputes were about. This is the section that explains where what we now call the 2nd Amendment absolutist position comes from and that its tied up to the beliefs of largely rural, radical anti-Federalists who were considered to be nutty, dangerous, insurrectionists by the majority of the anti-Federalists. This radical, rump minority had an extreme understanding of individual rights and Liberty and that all government not of the most local level was a threat to those rights and Liberty. It is from this group that the argument about the need of individuals to keep arms to overthrow a tyrannical government originates. The rest/real argument over the 2nd Amendment between the Federalists and anti-Federalists was over Federal versus state power and at which level control over the militia would reside and who would provision it – including the provision of arms.
Omnes Omnibus
@Adam L Silverman: Too late at night for me to argue. On first reading, I won’t fight you. Maybe tomorrow?
Adam L Silverman

@sigaba: I saw that thread. It should be:
The day you are born is the day you are born.
Your first ‘birthday’ is synonymous with the first anniversary of your birth, and is the day at which you have been alive for one year.
India has been around for 69 years, today. It is India’s 69th birthday.
You don’t celebrate your “30th birthday” on your year of birth+29 years. Come on, people.

@schrodinger’s cat: Sorry! I used the word ‘celebrities’ carelessly — didn’t mean to denigrate these individuals’ genuine accomplishments.
But they are celebrated… just that our English word has come down in the world, as you say, now that it’s so easy to be ‘famous for being famous’…
Anne Laurie
@Eric U.:
There’s considerable speculation that $63 million never actually existed. Trump showed a “surprisingly good” better-than-HRClinton fundraising total for the quarter, but hasn’t yet accounted for the ‘missing’ $63m. So some observers think it was illicitly drained, either by Trump or one or more of his subordinates, but others are saying he just pulled a #Winning!!! number out of his… active imagination… which Trump’s frequently done over the last 40 years. As he once said (in a deposition, I believe), “How rich I am depends on how I’m feeling, at any moment.”
Anne Laurie
@Omnes Omnibus:

I hung out with Bhimsen Joshi in the 1980s; I was studying music in India and spent almost a year and a half practicing music in his house in Pune, going to his concerts, and absorbing his approach to the art of khyal singing. Here’s my recollection from just after his death in 2011.
schrodinger's cat
@Warren Senders: I am envious, you are a lucky man! My dad had an opportunity to meet Bhimsen Joshi once and I remember him recounting how extremely down to earth and without a shred of ego Panditji was.
BTW do you speak Marathi? If you do, you should check PL’s interview with Joshi it is available on You Tube
Thanks for sharing your recollection.

Rule Britannia!
Warren Senders
@schrodinger’s cat: I don’t speak Marathi. I speak a little Hindi. The songs I sing are in the archaic Hindi dialect called Braj.
Bhimsenji was an amazing artist. He personally was without any pretense at all. Unfortunately as is often the case in that context, he was surrounded by sycophants. That was hard to be around, and a lot of the time he didn’t strike me as being very happy. But when he was on, musically? Nothing like it anywhere.
schrodinger's cat
@Warren Senders: Yep I have heard of the Braj bhasha. I mainly know Mr. Joshi through his abhangas and other semi-classical stuff in Marathi.
This was the first Bhimsen Joshi number I heard. He is the playback for Ravana, played by Chandrakant. Totally awesome.
Ravana is singing about how wonderful Lanka is, it is paradise on earth, and better than heaven.

Happy independence India!
