While ‘decent’ Republicans are distancing themselves from Trump and the assholes at Breitbart, let’s not forget how we got here. The people in charge right now are the people who thought the only reason McCain and Romney didn’t win was because they didn’t attack hard enough.
Remember this shit:
On Friday’s Fox & Friends, Fox News Sunday host Chris Wallace weighed in on leaked reports that a pro-Mitt Romney super PAC was preparing to release ads linking President Barack Obama to Rev. Jeremiah Wright. Romney repudiated that PAC and urged them not to air those ads. Wallace said that there is a “double standard” when it comes to discussing Obama’s past as opposed to Romney’s. He also said that Sen. John McCain (R-AZ) was “crazy” for not attacking Obama on his association with Wright in 2008.
So don’t let these fuckers pretend they’re above it all.

Hell, Romney actually solicited Trump’s endorsement. And yes, that was after Trump went full birther.

Mitt Romney and John McCain are smarter than Chris Wallace. And signs are that Trump will lose much wore than Mitt Romney did. Which will mean one thing to normal people, and the exact opposite to the Trumpites.

Oh please John, a respectable Republican, in my lifetime, ran the Willie Horton ad because he was losing on the issues to a Democrat.
They jump on the low road any chance they can get, if it will help them win.
The problem for Trump (Romney and McCain) is there are not as many non-Hispanic whites, relative to the population as a whole, compared to the population of the latter half of the 20th century.
The low road to get whites to vote for you does not have the same impact it used to have.
It is no longer going to win Presidential elections.

ex-Romneyite Stuart Stevens (sp?) has been one of MSNBC’s new stable of never-trumpers, and if I only knew him from his appearances there and the occasional tweet I see, I might buy it, but nobody, or as good as, ever brings up that Trump was brought into the Romney campaign no in spite of but because of Birtherism. Willard and IIRC two of his kids brought up Obama’s birth certificate
and I’m pretty sure Stephens is the one who made an ad so racist it horrified his colleagues. HE couldn’t figure out what it was that bothered them. I’ve tried a couple of google searches, but the terms are too vague for anything substantive to come up

Yes. I’ve never understood why George H.W. Bush viewed (views?) Karl Rove with such distaste, since I’ve always figured the ultimate rule for House Bush is to do whatever it takes to win. And so with every other elected Republican I’ve ever heard of; there are no depths to which they will not descend.

Yeah, I’ve been having some trouble with that whole “let Trump be Trump” deal – in what way has Trump not been Trump at any point during the past year? He was a roaring, screaming, flaming asshole, he continues to be one, and has no intention of changing for anyone or anything.

Sometimes I think back to last year when everybody was predicting when this silly campaign thing would be over. The road we’ve traveled since then has been fucking nuts.

They’re only pissed off that they’ve lost the reins to Trump. This was inevitable, though. Not this specific this, but some this along these lines was inevitable. It could have happened four years ago, if the stars had lined up right. If it hadn’t happened this year, it might well have happened in 2020 instead. But it was going to happen. You can’t stoke up a bunch of ignorant bigots, creepy fundamentalists and sadistic sociopaths every two years and then stiff them when you win forever. It went on for 40 or 45 years, though, which is a mighty good run. Maybe Ryan, McConnell, et al., should be more thankful that their con lasted as long as it did, rather than be bitter that it ended. Or, if they truly are appalled at what’s happening, and not just pissed off that they can’t run the show any longer, and that they’re likely to get fucked in the election, then maybe a long hard look at what they themselves have been doing for the last 30 years might be in order. Not that there’s any likelihood of that happening, though…

You know, I’m starting to think Trump is actually a genius. Let me flesh it out:
He failed in his real estate ventures, and golf is dying off along with the baby boomers ( and climate change doesn’t help with drought and water restrictions and such). There’s not much money to be had from licensing fees on penny ante crap like water and steaks. And the TV show had run its course. But man, that wingnut wurlitzer grift is fat with cash, and endless stream of rubes, and even morons and mentally challenged like Palin and Beck have monetized it beyond their wildest dreams.
So Trump figured he’d get in the grift, first through the birther nonsense, and now as the Base’s ID candidate. “He says what we think, he’s not PC!”. Win or lose, it would guarantee a lucrative future of grifting off his true believers. Before the campaign, people on the right might have liked him, now they are ALL IN. And like Palin’s clique, they’re more than ready to put their money where their cheetoh stained mouths are to support him. He can bilk these suckers for a decade to come. Brilliant! Well played Donnie the Deadbeat, well played indeed.
The Golux
One thing I’ve been trying to imagine recently is what a Trump concession speech would sound like. Not that I think he would actually concede – he’d challenge it for the entire eight years of Hilz’ administration. My guess is that it would be so incredibly juvenile that every other stupid thing he’s said during the campaign would be forgotten.
What say you all?
Bobby D
@danielx: I think Poppy viewed Rove as low class, no pedigree, not blue blood. The help, basically. You don’t respect the help, you use them and toss them aside when they’re not useful anymore. You don’t invite the street muscle to the grand ball.

@Bobby D: I dunno, I’m hoping that Trump’s sense of business timing is as on-track as it has been the past decade, and he gets into right-wing-noise-job just as it all collapses.

@Bobby D: Well, Trump is low class. His dad made his money as a slumlord and there haven’t been generations to wash it clean.

@The Golux: A Trump concession speech? It will be 1) maudlin, 2) snot soaked, 3) belligerent, 4) ranting and vulgar, 5) self pitying, 6) histrionic, 7) misogynist and racist, 8) ugly, 9) incoherent and 10) rambling. Did I miss anything? I rather imagine a cross between Hitler-in-the-Bunker and a drunken frat boy version of Winston Churchill’s “we will fight them on the beaches” style speech, crossed with Nixonian self pity and sobs of “I am not a crook” and “you won’t have me to kick around anymore.”

@The Golux: I think he’s likely to go for darkness and doom instead of being juvenile. A lot of “folks, these are scary times, and my concern is that Hillary Clinton, who some people are saying is a troubled person, isn’t up to the task.”
ETA: “I hope I’m wrong, folks, I hope I’m wrong. But I don’t think I will be. Sad.”

@The Golux: The minute the poll closes, he will announce that he is suing the granny starver, mcturtle & co for violating ‘the pledge’ and the rubes will all yell, ‘hang ’em all’.

Many people are saying that Crooked Hillary has problems. Many people say serious problems. Believe me, it might be true. She’s a different person than when I knew her. Proably what happened… she’s unit now. Very unfit. Crimes. Sad!
Edit: But the good news is that we are going to watch her, like a hawk. We’ll warn the country. believe me, we’ll warn the country when she goes off the rails. Then we can stop it. Tune in to my new, and very classy, very well done, Trump News Network for Winners. Top people are on it, my most terrific people will look into everything she tries to pull on the country. Oh, I think Trump will be happy to be free of this campaign and go back to a life of luxury and bad taste. I’m really just wondering how long it will take before he divorces Melania, declares bankruptcy again, has a sex scandal, or some combination thereof.

Though I wanted a weak republican candidate as much as any other logical, flowers-birds-and-bees-loving person, I gotta say, isn’t there a point where a candidate needs to be impeached ? Shouldn’t we amend the constitution so that a candidate can be locked up for forging his own medical evaluation and Impersonating a doctor and doing the stupidest possible job of it? He demeans the whole point of everything.
