Overnight Open Thread With Music

Last night while I was poking around YouTube looking for the Irish Rover music I posted I came across something I’d never heard before. The Blues Brother’s doing Sink the Bismark. It was supposed to be part of the set they played at Bob’s Country Bunker, but it was cut from the movie and never shown. Not wanting to mix and match last night, I decided to save it for tonight. So have at it!

Up and down the shining aisles
The all-night grocery store on Melrose
Dozens of us exiles from the mother-ship
The whole wide Western world is at our fingertips

And while moon hangs high above the city
And while the night begins to flex its jaws
We meet up like a loose-knit congregation
Or like spies who need to pass on information

How much longer are we supposed to stay alive?
Gathering by the Portuguese sardines in aisle five

Fix the overheads the glare’s become too much at last
Have somebody try to boost morale amongst the cast
Thermoses of coffee in the frozen dawn

Besides, “techie scum”. We should try to find some more elaborate invective. A favorite of mine was Wallace Shawn calling someone an “ass-licking poseur”. Not particularly useful here, though – more something you would call an extreme hipster, another species that we seem to have a surfeit of around town.

@Omnes Omnibus: Did you ever happen to express your interpretations of Machiavelli and Calvin from the (rather excellent) thread last night?

It seems I’m not alone in wanting to hear your take, if you care to share!

(And, yes, given your request, I have read Machiavelli [with awe — especially given the context and his personal circumstances when writing it], and been curious about why Calvin is revered by some [wondering if the source is more nutritive than popular interpretations], but am not deeply [or recently] familiar with his writings, first-hand).

If you did, and I missed it, a link is welcomed. If you didn’t, and music is more engaging at the moment, please do consider these topics in some other more relevant thread someday.

Both are hot-buttons of late (given the unhealthy and polarizing forces re-emerging) and greater insight would be useful.

My girlfriends family (brother, niece and nephew) are in from Scotland and this week has been a chore to say the least. Lots of cooking for me on the grill and when not a different restaurant each night. We’re taking them to San Antonio for a 3 day weekend so tonight I’ve had to get familiar again as I haven’t been there as a tourist in over 10 years.

We’re staying on the Riverwalk and I have a few ideas for restaurants, etc. but any suggestions would be deeply appreciated! Thank god they are doing Fiesta Texas on Sunday so maybe I’ll get a few hours alone with my girl!

As long as the 2016 Nazis also get knocked into the river and increasingly humiliated for the following 60 minutes, I’m game.

For the non-Midwesterners, it’s a reference to the famous attempt by the American Nazi Party to hold a rally in Skokie, the Chicago suburb that was home to the highest percentage of Holocaust survivors in the United States. They won their court case on 1st Amendment grounds and then chickened out of the actual rally.

@Davebo: Going to San Antonio and avoiding Mexican food makes *sense*? I did Lulu’s too on that trip, but El Mirador is a far cry from Lulu’s. Rather refined. I had something with duck, and went back for seconds….worth reconsidering. The fact that I remember the name of the place and the experience, ‘lo these many years, should tell you something.

Saw the Blues Brothers at the closing of the Winterland in SF, New Year’s Eve 1978. They played their movie before they came out for their set. Bill Graham rode a giant joint down from the balcony and hit the stage at the stroke of midnight as the Dead broke into “Sugar Magnolia”. They played until dawn and then Bill served breakfast to the crowd.

At least the Illinois Nazis in this are just a small gaggle of weirdos with 0% approval rating. (In a modern remake, they’d be the Westboro Baptist Church). If this were a Trump rally, half the screaming audience would be with the fascists.

    @Mnemosyne:

I did not know that. I knew about the rally, and the First Amendment case, but I didn’t know they’d chickened out of actually doing it. Typical. (And I also didn’t know that the place where they were trying to march was the one with the highest concentration of Holocaust survivors. That explains both why they really wanted to march there and why the opposition was even higher than usual).
