Balloon Juice

Come for the politics, stay for the snark.

Republicans choose power over democracy, every day.

fuckem (in honor of the late great efgoldman)

“Facilitate” is an active verb, not a weasel word.

Some judge needs to shut this circus down soon.

If you thought you’d already seen people saying the stupidest things possible on the internet, prepare yourselves.

Incompetence, fear, or corruption? why not all three?

The republican speaker is a slippery little devil.

Their freedom requires your slavery.

Too little, too late, ftfnyt. fuck all the way off.

Republican also-rans: four mules fighting over a turnip.

We are builders in a constant struggle with destroyers. keep building.

Weird. Rome has an American Pope and America has a Russian President.

We will not go back.

When we show up, we win.

Not loving this new fraud based economy.

We will not go quietly into the night; we will not vanish without a fight.

Nancy smash is sick of your bullshit.

“woke” is the new caravan.

If ‘weird’ was the finish line, they ran through the tape and kept running.

Hey hey, RFK, how many kids did you kill today?

A tremendous foreign policy asset… to all of our adversaries.

When you’re in more danger from the IDF than from Russian shelling, that’s really bad.

Republicans firmly believe having an abortion is a very personal, very private decision between a woman and J.D. Vance.

Let’s not be the monsters we hate.

UKIP founder Nigel Farage, the original “Mr. Brexit”. Per Politico:

… The former head of the United Kingdom Independence Party will not offer an endorsement of Trump, a source close to Farage said, but will instead offer remarks on how to beat the odds and win an election.

“It came about after his visit to the Cleveland convention,” the source said. “He’s not here to endorse Trump but explain the Brexit story which has similar parallels to the current presidential race — he is going to be talking to grassroots activists about Brexit.”

The Trump campaign did not respond to requests for comment.

Farage was already in Mississippi Wednesday morning, where he did an in-studio radio interview. The source close to him said he will attend a private reception with Trump and 600 Republican donors Wednesday, where he will also be joined by Aaron Banks, a friend of Farage’s and a multimillionaire who bankrolled the U.K. Independence Party…

“Donald Trump dares to talk about things other people want to brush under the carpet,” Farage said in a CNN interview last June. “I think for the United Kingdom, I think Trump will be better for us than Barack Obama’s been. Of that, there is no doubt.”…

Why is Trump in Mississippi tonight?

Think of his stops the way a teen thinks about life: The only goal is to get a lot of Instagram likes.

— Matt Fuller (@MEPFuller) August 24, 2016

To quote NYMag‘s Jon Chait, “There’s Just One Flaw in Donald Trump’s New Plan to Show He’s Not Racist“:

… The main difficulty Trump faces in dispelling the impression that he is a racist is that Trump is, in fact, a gigantic racist. His first appearance in the New York Times came in the context of his being caught refusing to rent apartments to African-Americans. A former Trump employee has detailed a series of private racist statements and acts — saying “laziness is a trait in blacks,” objecting to black people working for him in accounting, his staff shooing black people off the casino floor when he arrived. Trump has replied that the comments were “probably true,” but berated the person who made them as a “loser.” He has questioned the legitimacy of President Obama’s birth certificate, called him a “terrible student,” and implied he only made it into Harvard Law School due to affirmative action…

Wait until Putin appears with Trump in Georgia.

Good news, everyone! I have mites. Ever since I took the new job (which is up in the foothills of the coastal range) I’ve been bringing them home, they think. So some basic miticide treatment, and using a spritzer with rubbing alcohol on my stuff when I get home every day, and I’m good! I don’t have to burn everything I own and become a monk.

I heard that Trump was calling himself ‘Mr. Brexit’, which I found hard to believe. Seemed kind of odd, and most voters would ask themselves ‘Huh? What’s a Brexit?'” And too easy to turn into the taunt ‘Mr breaks it”. But I guess it is one of those right wing meme worship words. Kind of like Amerio or black helicopter.

But Trump with the ass Farage in Mississippe. Maybe Trump is thinking about another kind of Exit. Trump going late Aaron Burr? Who will be his Col. Wilkinson? Will there be TrumpBoats with TrumpMortars floating down some river, with arms merchant repo men chasing them down?

Does the typical voter even know who Farage is, or why his Brexit mess was such a big deal? Seriously, anyone know? Or are the ultra-Wingnut racists and xenophobes whispering in his ear that the masses have been yearning for this nonsense. And Trump believes it. And most people are wondering to themselves, WTF? Trump gets so into hard core wngnut arcana that most people stop paying attention? That won’t last. Trump won’t stand for it. Then look for the fourth campaign management team.

And she’s done two very long opening leads (last night and last Friday night) that even though I knew exactly what she was talking about (Tanton’s activities last Friday and being quoted in Trump’s campaign ad and the quack researcher the Mercer’s are funding in Oregon last night) and I had a hard time following her. Is there any evidence that Steve Bannon is actually in charge of the Trump campaign?

I guaran-damn-tee you Bannon’s the guy who got Farage to stump for Trump. Which means sweet fvck-all to 99.9% of American voters, even the GOP voters, but he’s an IDOL of the “alt-right” Breitbart readership.

I have no idea if Trump’s figured it out or not, but “his” campaign staff seem to have decided they can’t win an actual plurality of American voters, so they’re going full White Heritage separatist. Maybe they honestly believe there’s a chance of winning with the “secret Trump voters” they’re talking up… or maybe they’re just realigning for Deadbeat Don’s ongoing career as a professional grifter political speaker-cum-analyst.

She scoffed at the notion that Trump’s vague expression of regret was in any way a valid apology to the specific people Trump has attacked, such as the Khans and Judge Curiel, noting how bizarre and unprecedented those attacks were.

She pretty much called the decision to hold a rally in MS political malpractice. She called bullshit on the excuses for not releasing the tax returns. She also pointed out that Trump’s doctor’s note was ridiculous, typo-ridden and not at all credible and said they should release real medical records. Overall, good job, Rachel!

Got in a minor car wreck today. No one was hurt. I’m just pissed because the other driver is denying she drifted into the suicide lane (didn’t signal), and I very clearly have a picture of my bumper, which fell off, directly in the middle of the suicide lane. She also approached a witness without an officer, who then proceeded to yell at me and disputed my version of the story, but then when the cop showed up, he then said, “Well, I didn’t actually see the collision. I turned toward it after I heard it.” The officer told the woman that if the collision had occurred the way she said, the damage would have been in a different location on her car, so THEN she said, “Well, I swerved into the suicide lane”, after denying being in it at all. LIES, and I will probably be the one found at fault.

To be fair, Trump is at a strong advantage, and if he loses Mississippi he’ll probably have lost the election anyway, so it doesn’t make much sense to campaign there politically. However, if the goal is Trump TV or Trump.com, he has a lot of potential media consumers there.

Maybe they’re so busy with that stuff that they are missing deadlines.

It was literally just black with roaches. Yuck. I still dream about that now and then, although it’s been half a century. In NC, there has been a coordinated effort by our fuckwit R state reps to toot their “increased education funding” horn. They’re using blatantly misleading advertising about teacher salaries that are systematically pissing off every teacher I know, and they’re all running the same script.
School starts Monday. Bus routes were “finalized” last week. What do I get today? An email saying that due to budget cuts, fourteen different routes for my son’s school (I have to think that’s most of them) are going to be double routes run by the same driver. They are more likely to arrive to school late in the morning and to homes late in the afternoon, and the situation is unlikely to change all year according to this email.
We are run by unadulterated fuckwits and in any other profession you’d be able to sue them for professional malpractice. I fantasize about November bringing a nice Taxi Driver-style cleansing rain that washes everyone with an R after their name out of Jones street and keeps carrying them until they get to Mississippi.

I’ve always respected the accomplishments of LBJ as far as Medicare, the Civil Rights Act, and the Voting Rights Act. Then recently I read a history book about Dallas TX from 1960-1963. Crazed racists, on a par with or worse than any still ranting about the race mixers.

In that book, I learned that Medicare was voted on and lost by a few votes long before LBJ took office after Jack Kennedy was shot. And JFK was working on civil rights too. So LBJ was able to use the hateful assassination in Dallas as a lever to get more Democratic senators, along with a few moderate Republicans to vote for Death Panel Medicare.

Seriously, they were ranting about Presidential Death Panels back in 1961 – and still beating the same crazy drumbeat. There was a cluster of hate-mongers competing with each other to make money off their hatred in Dallas.

Led by H L Hunt and the guy who owned the Dallas Morning News, with plenty of other wingnuts trying to become movers and shakers in a totally segregated city.

So in the first one, without giving it away, you’ve got Dracula in London – Van Helsing and the others failed, unlike in the Stoker novel. And, of course, you’ve got Jack the Ripper, but he’s now ripping vampires. All of the historic victims are there, but now they’ve been turned. And then you get cameos: Dr. Jekyll and Dr. Moreau consulting. All the different trans-Caucasian vampires. The Diogenes Club. The Limehouse Crime Ring – Fu Man Chu (the Si Fan), Colonel Moran, Bill Sykes from Oliver Twist, etc. The second one set during WW I is equally well done and has similar cameos and mashups.

Anno Dracula is really fun because Newman takes his vast pop culture knowledge and mashes every known bit of vampire lore into his book. St. Germain turns up as a minor character. And there are even hopping vampires from Hong Kong, IIRC.

@Adam L Silverman: I’m a firm believer in Slayerverse rules for vampires. For example The Master is a 1,000 years old or older, who knows. He’s old. And he’s sired thousands of vampires over the millennia. One of who was Darla, sired in Jamestown of all places. 1609.
Darla. Who sired Liam aka Angelus aka Angel. Who in turn sired Drusilla. Who then sired Spike.

You see, siring is how vampires preserve their genetic demonic line. Who doesn’t care for their family?

Buffy vampires are the best vampires.

I was once walking home when we still lived in town. they had recently torn down a feed store on a river bank, and the Health Dept had put poisoned bait out. I was jogging in cutoffs and sneakers, and the sidewalk, street and newly vacant lot were all completely covered with rats – Willard come to life!

I turned and ran the other way, went blocks out of the way to cross a different bridge. I was never gun-shy about rats before that. Now I don’t even like to see a dead one the cat killed.

Dat’s what’s going on Boys n’ Goils. In my not-so-humble opinion.

I think that’s the whole story.

Civilization is expensive. Nihilism is cheap in the short run.

And rats. There are definitely rats.

Thus, the (possibly urban-legend) stories about using rats to start arson fires.

Which was A Thing, in NYC, by the early 1970s. First I ever heard about it, since my father worked for the Port Authority, was his buddies “joking” about taking out the brand-new, deeply-loathed World Trade Center. Punchline was “… but where can we find a skydiving rat?”

And, yes, that flashed through my mind on 9/11/01: They found their rat(s)!

    @Amir Khalid:

What does that word “racialist” mean? I first came across it at school, when an exchange student from North Carolina told me his dad was not a “racist” but a “racialist”.

It means they’re a racist without the courage of their convictions, but you already know that.

The gloss is that racialists are positive people who just want to self-segregate with people like themselves. Unlike those filthy uncouth racists, who just hate people who aren’t them. You know, racists like Louis Farrakhan or Al Sharpton or Barack Obama — take the racialists’ word, those are the real bad guys!

It also, in America at least, seems to be a way for the self-styled “upper class” racists to distinguish themselves from their slope-browed shock troops. Atticus Finch would’ve considered himself a racialist, I suspect. So your classmate may have been trying to signal his class status.

I think the other thing Farage and Brexit bring Tump (beyond adding to the horn section of the dog whistle all Brass Orchestra for race, immigrants and international alliences) is a real live example of “Don’t Believe the Polls!” and the promised savior of the Uncounted Invisible Voter! They’re counting on the masses being clueless about the state of polling in both instances and the differences in numbers, but hey! probably not an unreasonable assumption to make about the base.

True. It’ll provide great comfort to the Ron Fourniers of BothSides media — even though I suspect it’s waaay too sophisticated for the yahoos screaming TRUMP THAT BITCH at the rallies.

I agree with a lot of that. However, I think she would really shine in a weekly show devoted to a long form story. Two long form stories if they tightly edited out all her repetitions. She really shines in that format.

She does ask tough questions in interviews but is way to hesitant about offending the interviewee. She has enough background research and smarts to nail phonies but hesitates to do so. She panics in breaking news segments. All doom and gloom.

Sadly, given all that, her hour is the best of the MSNBC evening lineup. Even more sadly, she could be one of the greats if she just dropped the polite school marm facade and went full bore gonzo.
