It's National Dog Day today…

A made-up gimmick of a holiday intended to push… awareness of how many good dogs are waiting for homes. Because we all need more excuses to talk about our four-legged companions.
Yes, there are people who take even worse pictures of their beloved pets than John Cole.

(For balance: National Cat Day is October 29th.)
Apart from remembering the good stuff, what’s on the agenda as we wrap up the week?
Raven
Bucha Knuckleheads. I’m in the old bedroom, very little sleep as I continue to recover. Evetytime I get up (and that is a lot) the Bohdi comes to check on me.
Raven
National or international?
satby
@Raven: He’s concerned, and that’s sweet. I’m just too stressed out to sleep, exactly one week for me to go before I have to be all moved out. I’ll make it, but as I take one car or truckload over to the new place the stuff in my old place gets busy making more stuff.
TheMightyTrowel
I’m in Sydney Qantas lounge sipping champers and en route to Japan for a 10 day conference-stravaganza. Very exciting for me (so much sushi! so many colleagues/friends) and my students (next week’s class is cancelled so they get a 3 week spring break).
Miss my cats already. sniff.
raven
@satby: Yea, he wants things just so!
satby
@raven: They do get attached to their routines. And they can tell when we don’t feel well too.
Patricia Kayden
I love that #rescuedismyfavoritebreed tag. Nice puppy pics to end the work week.
?BillinGlendaleCA
@Raven: My Yorkiepom still checks on me anytime I’m in the bathroom. I think she still remembers me falling in there the last time I was drunk. She’s cute and smart as a whip, but with a king sized attitude.
I’m planning tomorrow’s adventure: the Arboretum(it’s got the Queen Anne house from Fantasy Island) and a block in Glendora with amazing bougainvillea. I’ll probably only take my main camera with the stock lens and the new fisheye lens. I posted some examples of pics taken with the fisheye in an earlier dead thread, here’s a link.
raven
@?BillinGlendaleCA: Nice,

@Raven
Luxuriate as much as you can get away with while convalescing.
raven
@NotMax: Yea, I’m in the full embrace of constipation and trying not to force anything.
NotMax
@raven
This too shall, um, pass.
Black licorice (the real kind) can help.

Good Morning☺ , Everyone ?
raven
@NotMax: Oooh, the swanky grocery store has Australian “eating licorice”!

The dog pics are cute.

@raven: I was surprised that most of the special functions work with the fisheye, even the panorama.

It looks like Invest 99L will pass south of Florida but we’re still supposed to get a lot of rain this weekend, so I will forego taking the Pontiac out for the trip to the tour of the antique auto museum up in Broward County.
I can take credit for pushing the storm away; I renewed my renters insurance this week. Had I not, we would have been pummeled. Karma, y’know.

By providing military aid to Britain’s campaign against Hitler, FDR and the Democrats have lowered themselves to the level of the Third Reich, leaving both sides in the wrong.

@?BillinGlendaleCA: I need to understand my wide angle better too.
KlareCole
@raven: oh gee, must be the pain pills. The white stuff in the blue bottle helps. Sure hope you feel better soon.
KlareCole
@?BillinGlendaleCA: Nice. Captures a lot. Have to tell our dog that it’s his holiday. Though in our house every day is doggie & kitty day.
satby
@raven: @KlareCole: have some kale, cooked or in a salad. Loads of nutrients and acts like colon draino.

Since this is an open thread, I will give the update I promised. Although I’m feeling some better, the CT scan showed disease progression, so I’ve been pulled from the clinical trial and will be trying a new chemotherapy when the current one clears my system. However, I fear that means a few weeks of low energy and not feeling well.
I fostered dogs for a few years until my “failed rescues” got up to ten. If the time comes when no drugs hold back the cancer, I may turn to this wonderful community to help rehome my babies.

@raven: My nurse recommends prunes, though I’ve convinced her that it might not be a great idea to have them while on a hike in the mountains when facilities are somewhat, eh, less developed.

Started my new blood pressure medication last night. Woke up with the spin-dizzies. I am reliably informed that it is a common occurrence for the first couple of days, until the body gets used to it. Stayed home because I’m walking sideways into walls.

I’m home from the work trip to CT, where a stupefyingly complex 7pS pulse laser kicked my butt. I have to go back and fix it, but I’m in the office for at least 10 days. I’d rather be standing on a ladder wrangling 300 micron long pulses of light than sitting at a desk.

We celebrated by waking at 6:30, going into the front yard to pee, then having a delicious bowl of kibble. Later, he’ll celebrate with a fresh bowl of water in his pen. Yay!

I’ve been awake for 2 hours and now it’s time to get up and go to work. Feeling stressed with work, a relationship on the rocks, and my own medical travails. I know this is Dog Day but it was nice having a warm fuzzy kitteh curled against my side the last 2 hours.
Hang in there, @greennotGreen. We are all pulling for you.

The freude is very schaden: Trump campaign chief is registered to vote in Florida at unoccupied home
Stephen Bannon’s enrollment is apparent violation of crucial swing state’s election law requiring voters to be legal residents of county they register in
ETA: Stephen Bannon, the chief executive of Trump’s election campaign, has an active voter registration at the house in Miami-Dade County, Florida, which is vacant and due to be demolished to make way for a new development.
“I have emptied the property,” Luis Guevara, the owner of the house, which is in the Coconut Grove section of the city, said in an interview. “Nobody lives there … we are going to make a construction there.” Neighbors said the property had been abandoned for several months.
Bannon, 62, formerly rented the house for use by his ex-wife, Diane Clohesy, but did not live there himself. Clohesy, a Tea Party activist, moved out of the house earlier this year and has her own irregular voting registration arrangement. According to public records, Bannon and Clohesy divorced seven years ago.
Baud
@OzarkHillbilly:
Wise decision by Clohesy.

It’s a shame Trump is going to need another new campaign chief so soon:
Ah, but there was a reason for all these shenanigans:
Follow the money, always with these people it’s all about the money.
Baud
@OzarkHillbilly: I’m surprised they aren’t registered in the Caymans to avoid paying federal taxes too. They must really value their vote.
Peale
@OzarkHillbilly: I’m surprised his use of a p.o. Box wasn’t picked up in one of those many Florida voter role purges.
Punchy
@OzarkHillbilly: Having some trub keepin up here….so BOTH Bannon and his battered ex- are illegally registered to vote in FL? Wow….just….wow.
Somewhat related: isnt this Bannon supposed to be a bad boy, a shit thrower, a fighter etc? Is it just me or has he had zero effect on the campaign? Where are all his dirty schemes, his racist memes, his fevered dreams?

@raven: My wife suffers from a neurological disorder that affects the small muscles of the bowel, so she has struggled with severe constipation for many years. Her tips:

I’m counting at least 4 wives for Bannon if he is married now. Think the piece on domestic violence mentioned a prior wife to that wife, now this Tea Party wife. If he is married now, that’s #4. Need flowchart!
gogol's wife
@Raven:
That is so cute.
Kay
@OzarkHillbilly:
Residency is not as cut and dried as you might think though. You can see it in the Florida rule that is quoted- “mentally ..intend to return”.
There was a bigger case in Ohio that went to a ct of appeals. The question was whether this business person who had several residences was a Chicago resident or an Ohio resident. He lost. He’s a Chicago resident.
That said, an abandoned house would be fairly solid proof that he doesn’t live there.
Kay
@OzarkHillbilly:
The delightful part about it to me is it shows how easy it is to claim voter fraud. I don’t know if he’s voting fraudulently because there’s a whole residency analysis. Which is why people on the Right should stop accusing black people of it constantly. “Fraud” means something, in the same way screeching that something is “unconstitutional” means something. This whole “presumptively fraudulent” thing the Right has adopted and codified is wrong-headed.
TS
So Hillary told them what is what on Morning Joe. Despite the attempts to overtalk her (which failed) and the attempts to attack the Clinton Foundation (which failed) and the questions on why people didn’t like her (which went nowhere) – she spoke like the veteran she is – answering the question with all the positive issues related to the topics they raised.
OzarkHillbilly
@Kay: He’s gonna have a hard time arguing that was the case if he’s done it before:
I sense a pattern emerging :-)
@Kay: The delightful part for me is that he was among the loudest screachers about voter fraud, and here is being caught at just exactly that.
The other part is what does this say about Trump’s hiring practices? Doesn’t he vet his people? 2 in a row.
debit
@OzarkHillbilly: Seconding the dumpster. I ended up with two “bagsters” that proved insufficient and ended up calling 800 Got Junk for the rest. At that point I just said “everything in the basement. I don’t care how much it costs.” Which was a lie, because in the end, I did care because it was a lot. A dumpster would have been so much cheaper.
Keith P.
Jeez, I’m trying to watch Morning Joe, but I can handle only so much of Mika B very concernedly stating that the Clinton foundation “just…just…raises questions”. Well, raising questions in and of itself is not bad, particularly when you have someone ON THE DAMN PHONE to answer those questions.
TS
@Keith P.:
Hillary handled it – every time. I think if Trump and or his “team” listened this morning, they may think further on how they can avoid any debates
WaterGirl
@Raven: I have been away for a day or two, did the post-surgery pain finally set in? Hope you can get some good sleep soon. Was my mom right … was the “day after the day after” your worst day so far?

@raven: My deepest sympathies as this is a side complication of some other issues I have that comes up once a year or so. I really try not to bore my lovely bride with endless discussion of my bowels and be one of THOSE guys, it’s kind of a romance killer. But I do tend to obsess about it just a little.
I was consuming a lot of licorice this summer as I was in Denmark and it seems to be a favorite up there. Not sure why. Not only can you buy licorice candy EVERYWHERE (spelled “lakrids” but Danish pronunciation is even weirder than English and it sounds pretty much like the English word), always available in both “sweet” and “salty”, but it’s on the menu at every cafe as a flavoring for coffee, or as licorice-root tea, or as a tea blend including licorice-root.
That said, I didn’t notice it had any particular intestinal effect. But I love licorice anyway, so that’s OK.

On my way home from the Y, I heard On Point on the radio. The host started by asking about how low the tone of the campaign had fallen, but the three guests were having none of it. They all said Clinton brought to the surface what’s been an undercurrent all along. Jack Beatty said she spoke dispassionately, not making accusations, but laying out what Trump and his supporters have said and done. He said if she says Trump is making Alt-Right mainstream and he has Bannon as his campaign manager, then that’s not an accusation. It’s a fact.
I was stunned by the lack of both siderism. At least with this group, Clinton’s speech was a success.

So I got my NYTimes from the yard this morning, expecting to see front-page coverage of Hillary’s historic speech. Nope. One article on Trump’s move toward a “more Obama-like” immigration policy, and one headline about the “weak bench” the Democrats have that’s keeping them from taking over the Senate.
The liberal NYTimes.

Hi, everybody. I wanted to thank everyone for their help with my children’s book about Bill finding his balloon. I have the proofread version, high res version here if anyone wants it. Point of pedantry: the name “burkini” annoys me since the thing is neither a burqa nor a bikini, nor very similar to either. There seem to be people out there who think it’s a garment that covers the face, and I think the name is actually misleading them.
scav
@D58826: Which would be exactly why they chose it.
I’m somehow expecting something similar, but more painstakingly described in a more academie approved logique (the full Descartes) to emerge at the federal level. They pulled essentially that for the law on religious symbols in schools. It seems somehow characteristic that their underlying main objection would be the sloppy and imprecise language seemingly allowing les flics to randomly choose who to hassle about which long sleeves are religiously provakative and which are not. Just leads to bad international PR. But a tightly woven legalist intrastructure that makes a token nod to the threat of visible nuns and Amish sunbathing? Mission accomplie.
D58826
At this point I really wish the Clinton’s had that magic murder machine. I can think of a few prime candidates, starting with Larry Klayman and a few congress critters.
Time magazine has a story about how Hillary is failing to address the Foundation ‘scandal’ .
The writer gave three examples of the ‘scandal’
1. the AP story on the 84 people who had or tried to have a meeting with Hillary. The writer didn’t mention that the story has been debunked
2. the sale of uranium to the Russians. The writer did not mention that 8 other agencies had to approve the deal as well
3. But she saved the best and absolute worst ‘scandal’ for last – how the image of Bill on fund raising trips traveling the world with the rich and famous compares unfavorably with Jimmy Carter swinging a hammer for Habitat for Humanity.
In the meantime we are being treated to speculation about the 14k new emails and what horrors they will revel. I understand the real reason Hillary set up that server was to try and keep Klayman from rummaging around in her e-mails. Obviously that failed but does anyone think that if she used a state department e-mail that Klayman would have gone away. He would have used a FOIA request to get the state dept. e-mails. Once they had them any mention, no matter how casual or inconsequential, of the Foundation or anything else would have generated a law suit to gain access to those documents as well. A little judge shopping and Klayman would have gotten an injunction to be present when Chelsea gave birth. And Klayman will dole out the e-mails in carefully selected batches with all of the ‘juicy’ parts highlighted from now till election day. The lazy media won’t even have to read them, just look for the parts with yellow highlighter.
D58826
@Matt McIrvin: Actually looks like a divers wet suit

@Original Lee: Except that it seems to be happening in both the EU and the UK, so banks would benefit in either case. As there have been instances of banks announcing they’re transfering important bits of their operations out of London and to the EU to retain the benefits of the open market, it seems there would have to be a stronger only within the UK benefit to banks to make BREXIT a net winner for them.
