Donald Trump Speech on Immigration Live Feed President Pena Nieto Post Meeting Press Conference

Donald Trump is expected to give a speech clarifying his position and policy on immigration this evening. It is unclear what effect his visit with Mexican President Pena Nieto will have on his remarks. The live feed of the post Nieto-Trump meeting press conference is embedded below (the press conference begins around the 20 minute mark). Followed by a live feed embed for Trump’s speech on immigration in Phoenix this evening.

ETA: I’m not exactly sure when Trump’s Phoenix event will start. I first saw it reported for 6 PM EDT, but that’s clearly not the case if its 6 PM local time in Phoenix, Mountain Standard Time, than this thing won’t start till 9 PM EDT tonight. The immigration speech is scheduled for 9 EDT! I have a fresh thread ready to go for that.

I’m 100% mystified as to why Nieto agreed to meet with Trump.

Nieto really must be a shitty politician himself, with a 23% approval rating.

@Trentrunner: 75% of Mexicans view Trump in the negative. Unless he told the man off, there is no benefit to him. It’s mystifying.

Meanwhile, Chuck Todd is incredulous that some can’t see the that Trump did something beneficial to his campaign that wasn’t just a publicity stunt.

    @Trentrunner:

” I’m 100% mystified as to why Nieto agreed to meet with Trump. ”

My understanding from stories about the visit, is that Nieto issued a pro forma invitation for some kind of meeting with both candidates before the election. I don’t think he expected to Trump to take up the offer in such an unexpected way.

Maybe after the first debate, he’ll pontificate about how Trump was “successfully messaging” when he lied about [pick anything, since Trump lies about everything]. I love it when Chucklehead Todd does that. Then maybe he’ll get all huffy if it is pointed out to him that, as a journalist, he might consider, you know, pointing out when Trump is lying about [anything], and say that’s actually not his job. Love that one too.

ETA: Almost forgot, maybe Chucklehead Todd will also claim that HRC “disqualified herself” when she said [anything, but probably something about her damn emails]. That’s my favorite.

@schrodinger’s cat: I don’t speak Spanish, but I follow some people on Twitter who do, and who live in Mexico (I’d have to search a bit to find US-based folks of Mexican origin who are currently active on Twitter; ).

Both @AlGiordano and @MexicAnarchist are commenting on it, though speaking to different audiences I think. The short version: Mexicans are generally appalled that Trump was even invited, and they were already mad about their President, as reflected in really low poll numbers (23% approval, if I recall). The general feeling is that the guy invited Trump for his own personal political reasons: as an attempted distraction from much bigger, nastier issues vexing the Mexican public, and possibly a way to show how tough he could be against this American reality show doofus-turned-political-candidate-(and-still-doofus).

MexicAnarchist has been following the government killings of protesting teachers and students for the past months. A sampling of his tweets

    :Person of College @MexicAnarchist

If y’all were expecting huge protests against Trump in Mexico City, sorry but no. There were protests, many of them, but for other reasons.

When you have a brutal narco-state killing and disappearing people, a reality show piece of shit isn’t high on the priorities list.

    ~
Then he took a look at U.S. coverage:

Oh my god, I woke up to liberals and conservatives both claiming victories with this Trump visit to Mexico. I’m embarrassed for all y’all

MAGA fucks saying this shows Trump has courage speaking in Mexico. Anyone can fly to Mexico & say stupid shit. It’s called Spring Break.

The dipshit “facts are on our side, rwnj’s!” Y’all are happy Mexico’s absolute asshole, blood-on-his-hands president fact-checked Trump.

Trump did do okay earlier today in a very narrow set of behaviors, but guess what…he is still Trump and he still has all the same issues he had 24 hours ago.

Speaking of issues, Hillary needs to keep the focus on policy issues and away from “Trump is crazy”. Carter tried that in 1980 and when Reagan refused to follow the plot, things got dicey. This is not 1980 and HRC is not Jimmy, but the principle still holds. If the campaign is made out to be what a monster Trump is and if he then miraculously muzzles the monster, it becomes a tighter race. GOP policies are still shit no matter how long Trump can fake being rational.

Being a regular twitter user yourself, I’m sure you’ve seen this kind of thing in the numerous Twitter spats that go on 24/7.

Here’s the Think Progress post from which he screen-grabbed the headline that got him particularly riled.

It’s a specific manifestation of the leftists-vs-liberal thing that I’ve seen played out over and over again that goes way back (decades/centuries AFAICT), and most recently during and after Sanders’ primary run (with MexicAnarchist in the leftist camp, as “leftist” is currently defined especially by young Democratic Socialist types). The media seems to think that not falling on your face for a republican is an accomplishment. Fortunately for us the majority of the public still expects more. First they told us that the general would be very close, and they told us that Trump’s convention speech and the ones his kids gave saved his convention. Then when the democrats showed them how you’re supposed to run a convention, the media said the bump was small and wouldn’t last. Now in spite of the latest explosion of Clinton ‘scandals’ the only mentions she gets in the media these days are to report more scandals or her plummeting poll numbers. I saw a crawl on msnbc today that said Clinton unfavorable hit all time high 56, Trump unfavorable 63. They want a race and will do everything in their power to get one, but so far most people still prefer her to him. On the other hand, her surrogates (looking at you Prof. Warren) can commence their Twitter barrage right about now. One sure way to cut the MSM’s “now he’s presidential” schtick is to goad him into a Twitter war.

    Har. NYT:

Donald J. Trump swept into Mexico City on Wednesday on a politically perilous mission to prove his mettle as a negotiator by facing a nation that he has repeatedly denigrated and has promised to compel to pay for a border wall.

But Mr. Trump’s efforts at diplomacy in a meeting with Mexico’s leader, Enrique Peña Nieto, quickly backfired: Mr. Trump said that the two men did not discuss financing for the wall, one of his signature immigration issues, while Mr. Pena Nieto said later on Twitter that at the start of their meeting, “I made it clear that Mexico will not pay for the wall.”

It took a few hours, but I think Josh Marshall’s formulation of Trump’s Razor remains true.

RICK WILSON: I see this meeting playing out as being a dumpster fire on top of a giant mountain of burning tires. There is very little condition that Donald Trump comes out of this where he doesn’t, first off, lie about what happened in the meeting.

He is going to say, “The Mexicans agreed to everything I want. They’re building the wall — we’re building the wall. They’re paying for it.” And then the Mexicans are going to blow him up.

This is a guy who has — he’s been very accustomed to existing in this sort of Sean Hannity-Rush Limbaugh bubble for the last few months where no alternative reality impinges. But this is a real deal with an actual head of state of a foreign power. And he’s going to have to go there and he can’t just lie his way out of it.

@dmsilev: lol. I’m glad they are framing this as a failed negotiation, even though it was no such thing as I doubt negotiations were part of the agenda. Although I could do without the “perilous mission”. Mexico isn’t exactly the least tumultuous spot in the hemisphere, but come on. It’s hardly like a commando raid in the mountains.

Eta: a better framing all along would be that Trump was seeking Mexico’s blessing for his plan. That would irk him to no end.

I’ve used LinkedIn and still have an account. Seemed like a glorified FB to me. I used it to network about jobs for about 2 yrs with no results. Maybe if you had a particular talent, more in the tech business I’d think it might be good. A lot of it is people telling me how to advance myself by taking some course, and it reminds me of scientology in that regard. There’s always another course to audit to learn more about having say, common sense. Not about finding/developing it, just about how great it is to have some.

When (if) they debate, Sec. Clinton’s best move by far is to ignore Trump and speak directly to the audience. “This is what I’ll do as President, etc.” Ignoring Trump is the best way to send him into a mindless rage.
PS: Current poll results show I was right. Calling Trump the racist he is only draws white Republicans to him, as they of course couldn’t be racists.

So plenty of red meat in the warm up to Trump’s talk. Right now they have family members on stage talking about their relatives killed by illegal immigrants. I think this is a tell on how things are going to go tonight. He’s going to go hardline. Pena Nieto’s now publicized contradiction will be worked in. He will claim Pena Nieto has stabbed him in the back, can’t be trusted, is an example of what Mexico is doing to the US. I think tonight’s speech is going to be very, very harsh.
