Balloon Juice

Come for the politics, stay for the snark.

In my day, never was longer.

Russian mouthpiece, go fuck yourself.

Historically it was a little unusual for the president to be an incoherent babbling moron.

Teach a man to fish, and he’ll sit in a boat all day drinking beer.

Republican obstruction dressed up as bipartisanship. Again.

I didn’t have alien invasion on my 2023 BINGO card.

Thanks to your bullshit, we are now under siege.

And now I have baud making fun of me. this day can’t get worse.

Insiders who complain to politico: please report to the white house office of shut the fuck up.

Republicans are the party of chaos and catastrophe.

Red lights blinking on democracy’s dashboard

I’d try pessimism, but it probably wouldn’t work.

Republicans don’t want a speaker to lead them; they want a hostage.

It’s time for the GOP to dust off that post-2012 autopsy, completely ignore it, and light the party on fire again.

I’m pretty sure there’s only one Jack Smith.

You cannot shame the shameless.

Not so fun when the rabbit gets the gun, is it?

Balloon Juice has never been a refuge for the linguistically delicate.

When do the post office & the dmv weigh in on the wuhan virus?

A democracy can’t function when people can’t distinguish facts from lies.

A snarling mass of vitriolic jackals

They traffic in fear. it is their only currency. if we are fearful, they are winning.

The republican caucus is already covering themselves with something, and it’s not glory.

We cannot abandon the truth and remain a free nation.

Open Thread: Paul Ryan Sucking Up to the NRA Again

Sources: GOP leaders plan to reprimand Democrats over guns sit-in https://t.co/XL5bcL8lpK | AP Photo pic.twitter.com/z8RRTCg9Rf

— POLITICO (@politico) September 5, 2016

… The exact language is still in flux, and multiple sources said discussions are ongoing. But Speaker Paul Ryan’s office and other leadership staff have been researching ways they can punish Democrats for their controversial occupation of the House floor to protest the chamber’s lack of response to the Orlando, Florida, shooting massacre.

GOP lawmakers are expected to discuss the matter next week upon returning from their summer recess. While no votes have been scheduled, some members have been given notice that the response could come to the floor in September.

One option that’s been floated is a resolution broadly stating a sentiment that such tactics shouldn’t be allowed and will be sanctioned somehow going forward. Others are hoping Republicans will publicly rebuke certain Democrats they say “intimidated” nonpartisan House staff members during the late-June incident…

House Republicans were furious when Democrats took over the House floor, a breach of decorum that shut down the chamber for 25 hours after Ryan refused to allow a vote on a gun-control bill. GOP lawmakers seethed in conference meetings following the incident — which garnered loads of favorable press for the Democrats — and demanded that Ryan act to rebuke them.

Republicans say the Democrats’ actions endangered the institution by undermining rules that have governed the chamber for 250 years. Even senior Democrats privately expressed concern about potential long-term fallout, particularly if they’re eventually in the majority and Republicans resort to the same kind of tactics…

Repubs are furious that the Democrats got all that favorable media attention for nothing more than actually acting on their stated principles, and in the process made the GOP look like two-bit gunsels failing to enforce their NRA bosses’ bidding. Because screaming for security to strongarm an elderly civil rights hero and a military vet who lost her legs in combat… wasn’t the ‘strong daddy’ image the Repubs were trying to project.

… Republicans have also taken issue with how a few Democrats in particular acted during the protest. Majority Leader Kevin McCarthy (R-Calif.) told reporters in July that nonpartisan House staff complained to him that Democrats were bullying floor employees, even knocking something out of one staffer’s hand when the person was trying to restore order.

McCarthy said his staff was investigating the matter, had talked to multiple witnesses and was seeking video footage to verify the account. POLITICO has not independently verified his assertion.

IIRC, McCarthy is the mook who lost his shot at the Speakership because he couldn’t resist bragging in front of cameras that Gowdy’s most recent BenghaziAIEEEE!!! hearings were a stunt to take down that uppity Clinton woman. He’s not dumb enough that he still wants to take the job away from Ryan, is he?

And people say this is a “do-nothing” Congress! They do plenty…how many times have they tried to repeal the ACA? How many post offices have they named? Plus, who can forget the hard-hitting investigations into everything the Republicans hate…and how completely they failed. Cripes, please rid the House and Senate of those who don’t want to do their jobs, and for the love of all that’s holy, do not send L’il Marco back to the job he has already abandoned once.

Apparently this sit-in was not unprecedented. It’s the third. The Republican one went on for a month but during a recess so that’s a little pointless. No mention in the article whether anyone was reprimanded for the previous sit-ins.

Since this is an open thread, want to ask – has anyone seen Melania Trump since the convention? Seems like she used to go to Trump rallies at least occasionally, but has she been spotted recently? I wonder what it’s all about? – the plagiarism thing really threw a damper on the convention (not that it needed help), and we know what a temper Trump has, so… How long does it take for bruises to heal? Seems like any little blemishes of that nature ought to have cleared up by now.

@WaterGirl: (CNN)Philippines President Rodrigo Duterte tore into President Obama with an obscenity on Monday, leading the White House to cancel an upcoming meeting with Duterte.

White House officials previously said Obama would confront Duterte about his country’s handling of drug dealers, including extrajudicial killings, which are government executions without the benefit of judicial proceedings.
“Who does he think he is? I am no American puppet. I am the president of a sovereign country and I am not answerable to anyone except the Filipino people,” Duterte scoffed in a speech Monday. “Son of a bitch, I will swear at you.”

“After its defeat in the Spanish-American War of 1898, Spain ceded its longstanding colony of the Philippines to the United States in the Treaty of Paris. On February 4, 1899, just two days before the U.S. Senate ratified the treaty, fighting broke out between American forces and Filipino nationalists led by Emilio Aguinaldo who sought independence rather than a change in colonial rulers. The ensuing Philippine-American War lasted three years and resulted in the death of over 4,200 American and over 20,000 Filipino combatants. As many as 200,000 Filipino civilians died from violence, famine, and disease.”

@?BillinGlendaleCA: well, I actually wanted a Vietnamese sandwich, then I wanted yogurt, then I wanted a taco, so my round trip this afternoon has taken like two miles! Every corner my ass.

As an aside, didn’t Manafort have something to do with Marcos?

    @efgoldman:

    a country we’ve propped up since WW2

Well, yeah, but we owed them something, since they were America’s first conquered province back during the first Gilded Age!

I think it was predictable, if foolish, for Duterte to mouth off in front of the assembled foreign media. And since President Obama is smarter than me, not to mention a lot more experienced in international diplomacy, I’m sure he & his team were fully prepared for a demonstration along these lines.

Punishing the whole nation for one jagoff would be as silly as blaming us Juicers for Donald Trump!

Way to go, brave Republicans. So impressed by your stern, stern disapproval.

They disapprove SOOO HAAAAARD. It’s almost sexual.

@Joyce H: Since this is an open thread, want to ask – has anyone seen Melania Trump since the convention?

I assume that they are keeping her away from the limelight so there is no questions asked about her immigration status. It would be irresponsible not to ask. Seriously, that would be fair game since immigration is Trump’s number one issue. It must be because he’s had a half dozen positions in the last week alone on immigration.

@smintheus: Both Google and Urban Dictionary define gunsel as “a little man carrying a gun”.

Wiktionary admits that when Raymond Chandler first brought it into American slang, it was a vulgar Yiddish word meaning catamite.

I fully intended both meanings — Ryan & his GOP buddies are cheap gun-fondlers, and the paid rentboys of the NRA mob.

@Anne Laurie: ‘gunsel’ means a bottom or homosexual play toy of a more powerful man. The other supposed definitions just catalogue the standard wrong assumptions about the word’s meaning.

Do the Republicans really want to broadcast that they’re such weenies that a bunch of Democrats sitting on the floor intimidated them? I thought they wanted to be the tough guys. I guess it’s hard to play a role that far from your real character.

@lamh36: I wasn’t sure if I wanted to see it at first – I have such fond memories of the animated feature (we had the soundtrack album and I used to play it and sing along as a youth.) If you’ve never seen it, check out the vocal talent on that film.

It was better than I expected, particularly due to the voice casting. (Scarlett Johannson as Kaa? Oh, my….)
And of course Idris Elba is deliciously evil, yet also manages to evoke some sympathy for his character.
