Note: I am reposting this for the night readers.
Folks,
I’ll be updating the site, plugins, and tweaking a few settings later this week. After last night’s SSL certificate issue, I’ve dusted off the test server and will soon be hard at work.
I’ve not been around much the post couple of months, so consider me out of the loop. Are there any issues, tweaks, suggestions, etc. I need to hear before I begin work? I’m not planning on changing much styling but with the theme update, there might be some slight appearance changes here and there. So since I’ll be digging into all kinds of stuff, I just wanted to get your suggestions/peeves so I can see what can be done.
Besides the main updates, I’m planning a special area for National Security posts by Adam and his associates, and also hope to get a good recipe plugin going to snazz up that aspect of things a bit. And snazz in this case means order and standardized layout, not fancy gimmicks!
I’ll be reading the night crew’s feedback tomorrow, and will work on what I can from this, and the earlier, post.
As always, I’m prepared for lots of grousing, but let’s focus on trying to make things better! If you have specific lines of CSS or what have you that you’d like me to alter, please let me know the specifics and I’ll see what I can do. The less analysis and thinking I need to do to tweak it and make you happy the better – it will ensure your change gets done.
I will be hitting the hay sometime soon, so don’t expect me to respond to your comments tonight, but I will respond in the morning, so please do check back.
‘Night all, and good day where appropriate.
Billb
One item for your consideration. I am on an I-Mac using Safari, and while the Site works great, when I am in a comment thread and wish to go back to the main page, and I click Back, I only go one notch up on the comment page, if I do this a bunch of times, it will eventually go back to the main page. Not a huge disaster or anything, but if you get a chance maybe fix that. Cheers!

Dearest Alain, you’re doing great. I’ve seen no problems, reading from Firefox/Chrome/Safari on ElCapitan or reading from Chrome/Safari on my iPad. I don’t like the mobile version, so I switch it to full browser and it stays that way.
And thanks for fixing the certificate so quickly last night.

@Billb:
No no no no no! The back button as it works now is a critical tool to navigate the threads.
Let me suggest a different way for you to navigate posts that, I think, will actually work better for you.
When you’re on the main page, instead of clicking on a post title to open it, right-click instead and open in a new tab/page.

@Steeplejack (tablet):
Damn it, premature posting!
To finish: You can read the individual post as much as you want, then simply close that tab/window when you’re done to return to the main page.

Thanks Alain. Grateful to you and always impressed by your style. Site is wonderful–neat, fast and thoughtful.
This isn’t a critical issue, but…. Since I don’t know how to do my own fix, I wonder if a link could be given to ideas on how to stop the video from autoplay (Macbook Pro). (When I access the site with a hot spot it is very expensive and I suspect the video. Or else it may be that the FP youtubes start to download even if not played.)

@Steeplejack (tablet):
And you may eventually find that you rarely visit the main page, because it’s easier to open the “next post” in a new tab/window from your “current” post.
Plus, with multiple tabs open, you can easily go back and forth among concurrently active threads, which happens here a lot.
SiubhanDuinne
That sounds very sinister.
Miss Bianca
Alain, thank you so much for taking care of us here! I had a laptop meltdown to deal with this weekend so honestly, I haven’t been too cognizant of any problems. Amazing what Knoppix and Iceweasel will do to get you back on track!
Completely o/t. but did you ever make it out to Canon City this summer?
RK
Is there anything you can do to raise the quality of Cole’s posts?
The Other Chuck
@Steeplejack (tablet): Indeed, the back-button behavior is fine the way it is now, because it was fixed from the very BROKEN behavior it had after the last update.
@Alain: when things get updated, could you check that the back-button behavior doesn’t regress? That one is a phenomenal bitch to fix with a userscript (EBBJ in this case) and I don’t think it’s the desired behavior for most users, Billb’s request notwithstanding.
Smike
Using Firefox, when I click to “read more” (in a new tab), the new tab simply opens the entry at the beginning. IIRC, this was fixed two updates ago, then reverted back after the last update. I don’t consider this a big issue, but the other way was nice.
Thanks for all of the work.
Steeplejack
@The Other Chuck:
And could you also remind Alain (again!) about the seemingly easy fix to the naked-hyperlink problem? That seems to be the biggest, or at least most irritating, problem that a lot of commenters are facing now.
And I am hoarse from screaming “No naked links!”

@srv:
I commented the first time Alain posted this notice.

@Steeplejack:
Turn off outbound link tracking in their SEO program that I forget the name of.
Helen
Where’s Tommy?
Steeplejack
@Helen:
He self-deported after some scuffles during the upgrade almost a year ago.
Omnes Omnibus
@Helen: Hopefully nowhere near here. His expertise and I do not doubt that he is good at what he does – which is commercial websites. That is not what this place is.
Suzanne
Thank you for all you do, Alain.

@srv: “foreign”? How about me? An American reading this in Bangkok. Try “international”. More accurate.

@srv:
Is it a lot of work being an asshole or do you come by it naturally?
Chet
On mobiles, the share buttons are aligned as a column with a lot of blank space to the right. It would look better if they were in a row.

@Helen:
A few people here blamed Tommy for everything that has gone wrong since the crucifixion (a some blamed that on him too) He did not take that abuse well so of course others had to pile on. He decided he didn’t need their shit & withdrew.

Please make sure that plugins are imported using https.

There is still a cert issue; I’m using Opera and get this err msg:
===
The certificate for “Let’s Encrypt Authority X3” is signed by the unknown Certificate Authority “DST Root CA X3”. It is not possible to verify that this is a valid certificate.
===
Opera prompts for a bad/incomplete/whatever cert, so I can continue. But there is still something wrong.

@Miss Bianca: Sorry I missed this important question! I did not, but I plan to spend July 2017 and part of August in Florence tending a friend’s animals while he and family are building their house in Alaska. I will be focusing on enjoying the air, the mountains, and foraging for my mushrooms and fishing for my dinner as much as possible, and would love to meetup, depending on where you are. I know I need some of Dorothy’s Tamales (bison with red chile please), so if you’re still in Custer, that might be a great meet-up. If you have moved to the Western Slope, I’d love to still meetup as I plan a road trip or two, especially for some peaches, and to fish and visit around Gunnison. I sorta fell in love with Lake City and area. Drop me a line – please at getmechamot dot com and we can trade off-site info.
