Balloon Juice

Come for the politics, stay for the snark.

They traffic in fear. it is their only currency. if we are fearful, they are winning.

Let’s delete this post and never speak of this again.

Jesus, Mary, & Joseph how is that election even close?

Since when do we limit our critiques to things we could do better ourselves?

They fucked up the fucking up of the fuckup!

The GOP couldn’t organize an orgy in a whorehouse with a fist full of 50s.

That’s my take and I am available for criticism at this time.

rich, arrogant assholes who equate luck with genius

Russian mouthpiece, go fuck yourself.

Come for the politics, stay for the snark.

The republican caucus is already covering themselves with something, and it’s not glory.

We still have time to mess this up!

Historically it was a little unusual for the president to be an incoherent babbling moron.

The GOP is a fucking disgrace.

This has so much WTF written all over it that it is hard to comprehend.

Black Jesus loves a paper trail.

Come on, media. you have one job. start doing it.

Too often we confuse noise with substance. too often we confuse setbacks with defeat.

This blog will pay for itself.

And now I have baud making fun of me. this day can’t get worse.

The poor and middle-class pay taxes, the rich pay accountants, the wealthy pay politicians.

A sufficient plurality of insane, greedy people can tank any democratic system ever devised, apparently.

He really is that stupid.

When do we start airlifting the women and children out of Texas?

Trump’s stand-in, I’m guessing.

I have talked to a lot of undecided voters in last day. Their reaction to Hillary's illness is that they have great compassion for her.

Worth considering: Candidates' personal health getting way more attention than candidates' health policies/proposals.

My poor, long-suffering husband works with a couple of Trump-supporting, Alex Jones-listening, conspiracy theory loons. They had tidbits to share Monday about the HRC “body double.” One displayed photos on his phone showing Clinton waving, saying Clinton’s index finger is longer than her ring finger (or vice versa) in the photos taken at the 9/11 memorial but the opposite when she came out of Chelsea’s apartment. Cray-cray!

Clinton’s body double will be fine as long as she doesn’t try to ride Clinton’s horse.

Clinton’s not dropping out. Dream on you fucking ghouls.

In positive anecdotal news, one of my most crazy Berner, anti-HRC friends has come almost all the way around. I was painful for me to bite, chew and swallow my tongue when she unironically and wholeheartedly agreed with me that many of the attacks on HRC over the past 25 years have roots in misogyny, but I did it for the cause.

@Betty Cracker: I’m trying to figure out the significance of a body double. I assume Stone and his ilk are just creating more fantasies for their silly audience. Otherwise yawn.

OT: Read on LGM that Asheville police have made at least 5 arrests in relation to Trump’s hate rally last night, including of a Trump Deplorable who sucker punched a 69-year old protester in her face.

    Open Thread…yay!

So I got to go to a free screening of Bridget Jone’s Baby tonight. My sis had tickets and I decided to go at the last minute. I ya know me, then you know Bridget Jones’ Diary (the book that introduced me to Colin Firth. Real talk: Colin Firth is the Ivory to Idris Elba as Ebony, in my favorite Brit boys fantasy…) and BJ: Edge of Reason are two of my fav books (the less said about the 3rd book the better…ugh). I also like the movies, the first one more so than the sequel. So I was ALWAYS gonna go see the final film (they had me at Colin Firth…seriously).

So, I say this as a fan of the books and the movies, I fuqn LOVED Bridget Jones’ Baby! And if you’re a fan like me you’ll probably love it too! I won’t say much, but I LOL a lot and I said “aww” alot… and I even like Patrick Dempsey, (who’s NOT my fav actor). But the most important thing to know, if you are a fan of Colin Firth as Mark Darcy…YOU WILL LOVE THIS MOVIE!

It was a free screening, so alot of ladies many who brought along their men and I heard more than a few manly chuckles during the movie too, so hey…take ur S.O. to see it and she may compare you to Mark Darcy but all the endorphins from the romantic feelings make work in your favor…wink, wink..

THESE are exactly who Hillary was talking about and the country needs to talk about it straight out. I believe that instead of being like the “47%” comment she made, this will be an important turning point for the themes of this election: Whose America is this anyway? White Power and 1950 or Diverse and part of the future? The people have to decide, but its past — way past sugar coating anymore.

Gogol’s wife let me know earlier today that two (2) Hamilton stars made it onto this year’s Vanity Fair International Best Dressed List. The classically handsome Leslie Odom Jr. is listed under “Men” while my imaginary future ex-husband Daveed Diggs is listed under “Originals” because, as I have said many times, the man can wear outfits that would look ridiculous on a lesser man and still look like the picture of elegance.

No, Lin-Manuel is nowhere near that list, because his genius does not extend to dressing himself well. I’m still horrified by that electric blue blazer he wore to the White House.

Powell said Trump is a “disgrace” and that the whole birther thing was 99% “racist”. Saw Nicole Wallace talking about it and all she could do was talk about how it pretty much supports HRC’s “deplorables” argument. The Trump camp basically said…”oh well, Colin Powell has voted Dem last 2 elections”…but didn’t Trump also vote Dem in the past. She also said that HRC camp didn’t say much and chose not to engage due to their own history with Powell and emails.

@hovercraft: I didn’t see Pride and Prejudice until after I’d read the first Bridget Jones Diary novel. Bridget (and most of English women it seems…lol) was obsessed with Colin Firth as Mark Darcy. One of the big storylines in the book (and one of the many comedic bits) involved Bridget obsessing over Colin Firth and trying to get an interview with the actor Colin Firth for her tv station.

As i you don’t know, the author Helen Fielding based the first book on Pride and Prejudice and indeed, she based the main guy Mark Darcy, after Colin Firth as Mr Darcy from Pride & Prejudiced! Apparently he was either friends with the author and of course he knew of the book…so having him as Mark Darcy was just icing on the cake for us book lovers

Good heavens, Patrick Dempsey is an actor? By the time I’d given up watching Grey’s Anatomy (during the punish-Izzy season) I’d decide he must be the best pool cleaner Shonda Rimes ever hired, because he certainly had no business getting paid to recite lines on camera.

Apart from his flat-affect problem, the man has only three expressions:

    (a) Maybe I shouldn’t have eaten that second burrito for breakfast
    (b) I wonder if anybody can tell I ate burritos for breakfast
    (c) Ah, what the hell, they sure know now

@amk: Huntington’s thesis, from the original journal article to the full length book, was critically flawed. Moreover, his operationalization of civilization was hilariously incorrect. The groups he lumps together into his different civilizational blocks don’t necessarily go together. Moreover, the attempts to operationalize his thesis for quantitative empirical verification all failed at anything beyond the diadic level (two states/societies). Once the groupings were opened up to include more than two states/societies from his opposing civilizations it failed. In fact there is far more empirical support for the arguments that states and societies that are more culturally similar tend to go to war more often, or have disputes that become violent more often, that those that are different from each other. Huntington is important because he is widely read and therefore you have to read him in order to be taken seriously. Also, he’s sort of a stalking horse for a number of interesting, if not empirically verified/verifiable, ideas. His work on failed transitions to democracy is theoretically very important. As is his work on CIV-MIL relations. But he cuts a lot of corners that has brought him a lot of official censure.

    @different-church-lady:
NY AG is investigating the Trump Foundation, AG says the investigation has been going on for a while.

New York Attorney General Eric Schneiderman has opened a broad investigation into the Donald J. Trump Foundation, sources told the Daily News Tuesday.

The probe will focus on several topics related to the GOP nominee’s charity, including its 2013 $25,000 donation to the Florida Attorney General’s campaign after her office said it was considering legal action against Trump University. Charities are barred, under IRS, rules from making any political donations.

The probe will also focus on purchases the charity purportedly made for Trump, including a $20,000 portrait of the mogul. Such purchases are also against IRS rules for charities.

In a subsequent interview with CNN Tuesday night, Schneiderman, whose office is already overseeing a $40 million suit against Trump related to his shuttered scam school, said he was investigating the charity “to make sure it’s complying with the laws governing charities in New York.”

Quite the opposite, really; Almásy is the one who can be really unlikable at times. The story wouldn’t work if Geoffrey were unlikable. What the Minghella and Firth manage is the tricky job of making him stodgy while letting his fundamental decency and love for Katherine come through. It’s what turns that half of the movie into a tragedy.

Anything with a downturned brim isn’t supposed to ride on the top of your head like a porkpie. And if you really want to look cool rather than like a jerkoff, then pay more than $12 at Target for the damn thing. A Borsalino Trilby will set you back about $250, but hey, looking cool comes at a price. Or better still, ditch the goddamned Trilby altogether. Sinatra looked cool in one back in the ’50s, and you’re not fucking Frank Sinatra, or even Frank Sinatra Jr., asshole. But if you really want to look cool, get a fedora with like an 8 cm brim. (Of course, Borsalini of that style start at about $350.) And wear it at an angle and pull the front brim over one eye, for crissakes. Have you never seen a Robert Mitchum noir? Of course, if you’re not as nearly as cool as Frank Sinatra, then you’re way out of Mitchum’s league. Maybe you should just stick with wearing the gimme hat backward.

And thank you for letting us know that Lily inspired you to bring Maisie home — a win for both you & her, I’m sure!

@Suzanne: Secretary was 15 years ago.

I saw him at the US Open last weekend. I didn’t even recognize him, he was wearing a suit-jacket and a thick fedora in 95 degree heat.

Recommended Binoche for you (with Olivier Martinez): The Horseman on the Roof (1995). Right in your romance zone! Slightly overheated trailer here—it even says, “In a world . . .”!

@nellcote: Lol…and Obama basically told him to go pound sand.

Obama had a really good response. He said that if Snowden feels like there is something really wrong then he should get a lawyer and make his case in court because that is how the system works. You cannot have it both ways by saying stuff like “I won’t get a fair trial” or whatever and then ask for a pardon because of that. It doesn’t work that way.

Obama also said that there is was a whistleblower mechanism (that Obama put in place btw) that would have allowed Snowden to reveal what he did legally instead of the way he did. So he has nobody to blame but himself by going for the more dramatic route to catch headlines by willingly committing multiple felonies.

    @Adam L Silverman:

Way more violence if the trump loses. They’ll need to show us that they really won, and there’s nothing we can do about it. I imagine the National Guard won’t take very much bullshit from those pieces of excrement.

Between the feds and the Southern Poverty Law Center they will know who to watch election night. Between the sovereign citizens – wait, is there any difference between the Sov Citz and the KKK? Just asking. All one big bundle of frayed nerves giving them goofy bad ideas if you ask me.

@Calouste: Nixon was pardoned before he was even charged. Snowden, I’m pretty sure, has at least been charged.

    @Calouste:

No dude, the President can pardon you in advance of any trial, and then there’s no offence to try you for. Remember, Ford pardoned Nixon the day after Nixon resigned. Huge scandal at the time, suspicion that Ford told Nixon he would pardon him if it became necessary, in order to get the VP nomination.
