Balloon Juice

Come for the politics, stay for the snark.

One of our two political parties is a cult whose leader admires Vladimir Putin.

They are not red states to be hated; they are voter suppression states to be fixed.

Humiliatingly small and eclipsed by the derision of millions.

Prediction: the gop will rethink its strategy of boycotting future committees.

Wow, you are pre-disappointed. How surprising.

The revolution will be supervised.

This country desperately needs a functioning fourth estate.

When I decide to be condescending, you won’t have to dream up a fantasy about it.

Giving up is unforgivable.

Books are my comfort food!

Perhaps you mistook them for somebody who gives a damn.

The desire to stay informed is directly at odds with the need to not be constantly enraged.

It’s all just conspiracy shit beamed down from the mothership.

Bark louder, little dog.

You can’t attract Republican voters. You can only out organize them.

Accountability, motherfuckers.

Republicans do not trust women.

Accused of treason; bitches about the ratings. I am in awe.

A sufficient plurality of insane, greedy people can tank any democratic system ever devised, apparently.

Not rolling over. fuck you, make me.

I swear, each month of 2025 will have its own history degree.

I see no possible difficulties whatsoever with this fool-proof plan.

Let the trolls come, and then ignore them. that’s the worst thing you can do to a troll.

People identifying as christian while ignoring christ and his teachings is a strange thing indeed.

Conway asked about Trump’s short drs letter: “I don’t know why we need such extensive medical reporting when we all have a right to privacy”

— Eliza Collins (@elizacollins1) September 13, 2016

@ddale8 she’s on MSNBC right now

— Eliza Collins (@elizacollins1) September 13, 2016

Owen Ellickson is a genius at parodying Trump and his circle. But when Trump is the ‘reality’, how are the rest of us gonna know what’s ‘fake’?

CONWAY: Hillary should release her medical records, and Donald Trump will release– hold on, I'm being handed something… YIKES. Never mind

— Owen Ellickson (@onlxn) September 13, 2016

RYAN: Is everything OK–?
TRUMP: Look, I'm not dying.
RYAN:
TRUMP: It's just my medical records paint a picture of, y'know, a gross old guy

— Owen Ellickson (@onlxn) September 13, 2016

RYAN: The economy's healthy and you're not. Awful day. No wonder Douthat's tweeting about the Pope.
TRUMP: (mouth full) Hold on — Arby'th

— Owen Ellickson (@onlxn) September 13, 2016

Because, seriously, dude: Dr. Mehmet ‘Testifying to Congress in support of miracle weight loss scams’ Oz?…

Trump to discuss health with Dr. Oz, known for promoting quack remedies. Next up: National security forum with Captain Crunch.

— Karen Tumulty (@ktumulty) September 13, 2016

Fox hosts say Dr. Oz told them HE will see Trump's medical records before Trump & will reveal them to Trump on air: pic.twitter.com/ucBXtxe1Zv

— Kyle Griffin (@kylegriffin1) September 13, 2016

@kylegriffin1 @maggieNYT And there's no way that the Trump team won't have seen them and vetted them first. Props to the reality tv guys

— Clara K. Showalter (@ckshowalter) September 13, 2016

Dr. Oz says won't ask Trump “questions he doesn’t want to have answered.” If Trump doesn't release medical records, he must be hammered.

— Kurt Eichenwald (@kurteichenwald) September 13, 2016

Possibilities: 1) They think a health discussion actually makes Clinton more sympathetic, 2) Maybe there's something Trump doesn't want out.

— Josh Barro (@jbarro) September 13, 2016

4) Trump called dodging STD's his "personal Vietnam." Maybe he did get a Purple Heart on that battlefield.

HRCs health was option 4 after Benghazi, emails, Foundation. They got lucky w pneumonia. Deplorables is a tar baby so far. But they opened the door on all these and have to be ready for the blowback. They won’t be because they don’t think things through.

Taxes– ‘Nobody’s interested’. Charity– ‘It’s my money, I can do what I want with it’. Health– ‘I have a right to privacy’. Racism– ‘You’re the racist.’ Misogyny, xenophobia– ‘Those words are too big’. Putin– ‘Great man.’ Conspiracy theories– ‘There are questions that need to be looked at’. Hillary Clinton– ‘Disgusting, dishonest, crooked.’

Hillary is taking a couple of days off to recover after campaigning with pnuemonia, Obama gave a barn-burner of a speech on her behalf yesterday, and Trump is going to field the softest of inquiries on his health status with the esteemed Dr. Oz today….let’s see what the press does with this. Should be interesting.

This show will be horribly boring. Much better show if Trump, standing on stage, has to guess the names of a series of woman from his past who are standing in silhouette off stage answering questions.

But if has to be the medical show, and it turns out to be a horrible flop, this could be the fatal blow we’ve been waiting for all year.

Seriously, to turn this into a television show is a degrading moment for the country. Next he’ll be selling Trump Family Dolls on QVC. I’d like to throttle him.

  18. 18.

    ? Martin

    September 14, 2016 at 3:07 am

@amk: I wouldn’t be so sure. Consider the math here. Let’s say Trump gets 45% of the vote. What do guys like Ryan and Kasich make of that? The majority of their base was willing to back an outwardly racist, sexist, unconstitutional conman with no real policy ideas.

How do so-called sane Republicans campaign into the next election? Their voters have just announced to them that they don’t give one solitary shit about conservative ideas or policies. There’s no real interest in limited government, or lower taxes or even social conservatism. None. The only reliable thing that gets Republicans out of bed is beating Hillary Clinton, and there simply aren’t enough of them to do even that. So what do you run on in 2018? In 2020? Dems will run on everything they have, with even greater demographic strength *plus* running against everything that Trump wanted or said. The GOP will not only have lost african americans, but now also latinos (fastest growing demographic group), muslims (growing), and quite possibly women and anyone with a college degree (second fastest growing demographic group). We know from previous experience that voters will make all sorts of excuses about why Trump didn’t win – mostly around ideas of a biased media, vote fraud, and so on. Their base is just as likely to double down on the racist, authoritarian shit as they are cede control back to the Ryan wing of the party.

If I were a republican strategist I think at this point I’d have to tell them to start a new party, that they have no electoral future outside of the Confederacy, and preserving that stronghold means they’re going to continue to burn any hope to win back other demographic groups. They’re going to have to wait for a schism within the Dem party, grab the more conservative faction of it, and make the most of it. Using CA as a template, I just don’t see any other long term direction for them here.

@Time Travelin’: Not sure about The Sitch, but IIRC Snooki was adopted from a Chilean orphanage & therefore ineligible to be VP / President.

(At the height of the Jersey Shore phenom, her father gave an interview to the NYTimes, and explained that she’d been severely undernourished as an infant, thus her tiny stature. He didn’t quite add ‘and her other limitations’, but then he’s her dad & clearly loves her regardless.)

Between working 15 of the last 16 days, cleaning the house, and dealing with Monster’s death, I’m exhausted. I’m supposed to attend a board meeting of the women’s hockey booster club tonight. I just emailed the president that I intend to sleep as long as my body wants to, and if that means I don’t get up in time to make the meeting, I won’t be there.

I love the staff at the University of Minnesota Small Animal Hospital. Back when I delivered pizza in that area, they were the only ones on the St. Paul campus who were good tippers. I switched to taking all of my cats there after they handled Eddie’s cancer so well after my local vet had completely botched the diagnosis. They’re a lot more expensive, but I trust them.

That I like them so much is one of the reasons why my favorite character in Becoming Phoebe goes to vet school there. I’m considering writing them a thank you, and including a copy with instructions that it should go to anyone there who wants to read it. Is that appropriate?

@? Martin: Martin, sadly, I don’t think it matters a tinkers damn… why?

Because Paulie and Mitchie decided to ride the tiger and give their constituency the red meat that they’ve wanted. The Republican Id is large and in charge. Nothing is off the table… feeling anger to the Other, welcome to our big tent. In here, everyone outside the tent is an Other, be it a religion, a race, a gender, a sexual orientation, feel free to hate who you want, we’re not judgemental about things like that as long as you hate with us, it’s all good. Heck, they’re open to semantics as well, hate Planned Parenthood… c’mon in!!! Feel that its you’re Gawd Given Right to own a bazooka? there’s drinks waiting for you at the bar.

voters will make all sorts of excuses about why Trump didn’t win – m

There is only ONE EXCUSE: Republicans failed to nominate a True Conservative.

This has been the diagnosis for every loss, since 1992.

Bush, Sr was not conservative enough thus he lost in 1992 and that begat Gingrich.

In 2008, Republicans lost because Bush, Jr and his liberal policies ruined the Party and that begat the Tea Party.

In 2012, Romney lost because he was really a closet liberal mouthing platitudes to appease the base and that begat Trump.

When your whole philosophy is bullshit – tax cuts lower deficits / raise government revenues, for example – and you cannot admit you are wrong, the only path forward is to double down on the B.S.

    Comrade Scrutinizer

    September 14, 2016 at 4:58 am

@gene108: Problem is they can’t get elected that way. The traditional GOP values don’t capture enough votes. The white nationalists don’t make up a sufficiently large electorate, and the longterm demographics make the trend worse. I think the Goldwater comparison may be the better one, unless they attempt the Fascist / Nazi model.

So I was watching the local news here in LA, and they were talking about Trump’s plan for child care. So it’s a deduction for child care based on the average cost in the state. Deductions really don’t help much with the folk that really need help in paying for child care. His paid maternity leave plan basically pays unemployment for 6 weeks after the birth of the child, so does that mean that Congress will fund unemployment benefits? I remain unconvinced.
