Emmys Open Thread by John Cole| September 18, 20167:57 pm| 62 CommentsThis post is in: Open Threads, TelevisionFacebookTweetEmailBeautiful people.
I would pay big money for at least one person tonight to tell Trump to piss right the heck off.
The opening is just odd. What was Jeb doing?
Any news on The House That John Bought?
@JPL: Jeb was shilling for Uber.

OMG, He is shitting all over Trump.
@Hildebrand: Kimmel came really close.
@JPL: I thought his part about being nominated was funny.
@Belafon: I do appreciate that he hung all of that on Burnett – good stuff.
@Pogonip: Last I heard, there was a hail storm, and when JC went to take pictures, all the hail was human teeth. I think JC is putting together a blog post telling any supernatural beings responsible to go suck a bag of salted dicks.
I missed the first 20 minutes – I bet I missed all the good political stuff. I often record the oscars, emmys, tony awards on Tivo and then blast through them in 30 minutes or so, only watching the good stuff. But I forgot this was happening tonight.
@Keith P.: Are there enough human teeth in West Virginia to make a good hail storm?
(Sorry, Cole, I couldn’t resist.)
@JPL: Who is Jeb? (Bush has spoiled that name for me.)
I started recording The Tunnel with episode 5, so I just bought episodes 1-4 on iTunes. Hope it’s worth it! The Tunnel appears to be a PBS show that requires a subscription if you didn’t catch it in real time when the show aired.
You know the toothbrush was invented in West Virginia, right?
Had it been invented anywhere else it would have been a teethbrush
@WaterGirl: It impressed the hell out of me. Others, less so.
what network is broadcasting the show this year?
@Omnes Omnibus: Glad to hear that. (Sentence 1, at least!) Off to watch, will check back in later.
It was originally a Danish – Swedish show called The Bridge, it was pretty good, I haven’t gotten round to season 2 yet but plan to.
Has anyone watched Mr. Robot?
Obligatory volunteering reminder. Remember that in Florida in 2012, volunteers / ground game provided Obama the margin of victory.
Thanks, a kid that graduated from my HS the year after me won for Baskets.
I knew him when
@Pogonip: FYI, that was a callout to American Horror Story (FWIW, I was bored to tears by the premiere of Roanoke Nightmare, whereas I could not be kept away from Hotel). I think if it was “American Horror Story: My West Virginia Nightmare”, the tooth hailstorm would have been played for comedy. Moreso if the house in question was Cole’s…would be a much better show, really.
the Conster, la Citoyenne
Jon Favreau who was on Obama’s staff in 2012 said that Romney was polling so far ahead that the networks stopped polling FL. Obama won it.
@Schlemazel: Baskets is fantastic. Your homie deserved the award.

@eclare: We watch Mr. Robot but half the time don’t know what we’re looking at. Strange show.
Kimmel has been pretty good. Good opening, some nice Trump digs, good mix of jokes that acknowledge good performances and mock the stars without being overly harsh.
Damn. A Cosby joke. Nicely done.
Thanked Jenny Boylan !
So did Julia.
@BR: Did it! Canvassed for early in-person votes with my mom (age 74 and counting, S/P 2 different kinds of cancer) in the rain here in OH yesterday. Does feel better than sitting back and watching polls, especially in a swing state. Got some good landscaping ideas, too. Best door: 60-something grandmother who has been making every single young person who comes through her house register to vote for Hillary. She gave us 2 completed registration forms she hadn’t yet dropped off at the B of E. A one-grandma GOTV operation.
Louie as a woman is an interesting take.
If you’re a member of the local PBS station, I think that you can see a lot more content for free. We found that out when we downloaded the PBS app for our AppleTV.
Thanks for keeping the eye on the ball. 1000 times better than ohnoez’ing.
Love Regina’s dress!
Re: Dolphin anthem protest, Miami police, losing right to free speech:
The 1st amendment doesn’t protect me from someone pointing out publicly that I said something stupid. But it’s supposed to protect me from the government if I say something the government doesn’t like. That the Miami police (=goverment) would not protect the Miami Dolphins because the don’t like what they said or did seems – what’s the word I’m looking for? Oh yeah, unconstitutional.
Spent 6 hours yesterday calling for the 2nd district race. Jason Lewis is a racist homophobic xenophobe ex-radio asshole running to replace giant asshole John Kline. Angie Craig is the Dem and she stands a chance so we are doing what we can.
I live in Keith Ellison’s district which is safe despite his being a Muslim and black. The metro areas of MN are pretty decent places. Out in the shitstain areas you get Michelle Bachman now Tom Emmer. We probably can’t win there but we could flip Kline’s seat and Paulsons 3rd.
@eclare: The 1st rule of Mr Robot…
@Calming Influence: unprofessional is the word you’re looking for
No One You Know
@eclare: @Mike in NC: @Mike E:
I tried to watch it. I couldn’t get into it: sounded like the worst combination of Aspergers and major depressive episode packaged into a character and given a voice. It out-Kafkas Kafka, for me.
Sarah, Proud and Tall
The Danish/Swedish Bridge is great – season 2 was off a bit but season three was phenomenal.
@eclare: Mr Robot is really good. Great characters, shot composition and titles that make me geek out, and writers who obviously feel they have the luxury of telling their story in a measured and thoughtful manner.
I was going to watch all this stuff on the television machine tonight and throughout the week but then my housesitting job got cancelled at the last minute and I have no TV at my apartment. The debate is supposed to be this week, right? Hmmm. Radio, the streaming thing, or I have to invite myself somewhere close enough for me to walk, because yes, I will be drinking.
Great! Wonderful to hear stories like that, and I hope in the next few weeks the comment section is filled with them.

Shaping up to be a funny Emmy show.
@BR: Did voter registration today in VA. Will continue doing whatever they need through election.
I’m so off tv that I don’t know who half these people are; its similar to being at the check-out and I have no idea who the people on the magazine/tabloid covers are
I think that’s good?
@Larkspur: It seems like such a long time ago that there were debate watching parties during the primaries. Sounds like a fun way to do it, if I only lived in Oakland or somewhere. Why, I’d even watch a live-streamed debate watching party.
Cool. Rami Malek won best dramatic actor for Mr Robot.
Tatiana Maslany. Orphan Black. Yes.
@Aleta: Now you’ve inspired me. I have to look closely at all the many Democratic and move on.org emails I’m getting to see if there’s gonna be a local viewing place. I’ll make a viewing contribution.
I have not watched any of the drama series and only watched a couple of beers. Hardly knew any of the actors. I like Jimmy Kimmel though.
@the Conster, la Citoyenne:
From what I remember, if that happened, the situation didn’t last. Sam Wang had Florida as a tossup on election eve; it was the one state he couldn’t call, so he basically flipped a coin and guessed Romney would carry it, but he guessed wrong.
@Calming Influence: My SIL is a public defender type for appeals; she notes that the “off-duty” cops working these security jobs still have all of their authority of the government. So I think yes, it’s unconstitutional, and unprofessional. It seriously exposes the city to a lawsuit. I wonder if cities might have to revisit contracts to either not allow off-duty work, or withhold giving the off-duty cops the authority of the state.
Congratulations to Tatiana.
Huge Orphan Black fan. ☺??
@randy khan: Thanks, I looked into that a couple weeks ago, but it would have cost me $60, just wasn’t worth it.
@Sarah, Proud and Tall: Is that the version of The Bridge that was on FX for 2 seasons? That one eventually got too violent for me, so I quit watching at some point early in season 2.
She won? Finally! It’s a travesty that she hadn’t won until now. Just ridiculous. But yay for better late than never.
No, that was yet another adaptation.
@Steeplejack (tablet): Okay, thanks. I watched the first 4 episodes of The Tunnel tonight, and while I knew that it was sort of based on the same premise – dead body on the border, half on one side and half on the other – I had no idea that it really is the same story over and over again, just with slightly different details.
I kept feeling like I was in some parallel reality, watching The Bridge again, only different. It was slightly disconcerting.
The show that was on FX was the American version which starred Diane Kruger — and she was damn good. The first year of the American show was a variation on the book and earlier show. The second year went off the rails.
The original Swedish-Danish is the best.
@patrick II: “The second year went off the rails.” Oh, good, someone else thought so, too!
@Steeplejack (phone): Glad to know that. If you ever see that it’s on, maybe you can do a BJ public service announcement. :-)
noooo trump ^^
