Folks,
The updates are all done, and there’s still some customizations to apply and some font/design tweaks. Mostly stuff you won’t notice.
So, this post is here for you to report issues. I’ll make another post tomorrow morning to get the day crew’s answers as well.
I have addressed many of the issues reported in the previous posts, but many are not yet addressed. Some will remain unaddressed at this time.
Most importantly, due to the great help of the Hosting Matters team, we’ve now fixed the update mechanism to take care of some pesky file permission issues and built a failsafe so future updates will result in at most a 5 minute permission limbo.
Tonight/tomorrow, I hope to go back in and retro-add Adam’s National Security posts to the new Silverman on Security Quicklink category, and I hope to convert many past recipes into the new widget.
I may or may not respond tonight to comments in this post, but they will most assuredly be read and considered tomorrow!

No issues yet. Thanks, Alain, for all the hard work!
Major Major Major Major
Thanks Alain!

THIS BETTER NOT GO WELL! What the hell are all the whiners gonna bitch about & insult you for? You need to screw stuff up or the community will never be happy!
Roger Moore
You broke the back button again.
Alain the site fixer
@Roger Moore: I’ll look at that in the morning, when I’m fresh. Not sure why what I did didn’t re-apply the override but I’ll get ‘er done.

@Roger Moore:
Yep.

Hah. Failsafes are just selectors for new, improved, and novel failure modes.
Alain the site fixer
Yeah. But this time it failed so now it won’t. Kinda like NASA, gotta plan for failure.
M. Bouffant
Everything fine here except the auto-playing Jesse Ventura video, which at least is muted.
Up & down buttons pretty cool too.
henqiguai
Really diggin’ that scroll to the bottom button. Now, about that not-quite-as-useful[sic] SCROLL TO THE TOP button…
Bobby Thomson
For some reason the Facebook feed has been posting old posts.

My back button is now working. Now I’m going to see if I can edit a comment again.
Mary G
@Mary G: No, not getting “click to edit” or “request deletion” at all.
chopper
now my computer says “press PLAY on tape”.
schrodinger's cat
Test.
Checking to see if I can edit my comments.
schrodinger's cat
@Mary G: Nope, I still can’t edit my comments.
germy
Anyone else seeing these stupid “roadkill” shirt ads that say “Deplorables For Trump”
and
“Hillary For Prison” ?
singfoom
@germy: I live in the Chicagoland suburbs, and I’ve seen multiple “Hillary for Prison 2016” signs in various suburbs. Even one giant homemade sign that was wooden and permanent. Shit makes me so mad. I want to vandalize it. I hate that this shit has been normalized to this point.
I won’t vandalize them because that would be a crime. You want to support a candidate fine, but calling for the imprisionment of your opponent is kind of beyond the pale if you ask me.

But you fixed for Firefox, so great job, the rest of ’em can suck eggs. Losers.
p.a.

they appear in safari, F Toaster
Starfish
@singfoom: I keep seeing this Jeep with a Molon Labe sticker that also has a “Hillary for Prison 2016” bumper sticker in a suburb.
John Revolta
OMG WTF and various other acronyms…………………the site is working way way better…………………shit loads like 4 or 5 times faster for me even with my Jurassic version of Firefox. Somebody pinch me!
Roger Moore
@humboldtblue:
It isn’t working on my copy of Firefox.
Ceci n'est pas mon nym
Ok I’ve been afraid to edit because editing would throw me into moderation. But I’ll sacrifice this post to the evil deity FYWP in the interests of experimental science.
Edit: and here’s the edit.
Edit 2: Nope. Moderation.
p.a.
well, let’s make sure they’re not just for show
c’est bon
FlyingToaster
Mac El Capitan Safari 9.1.3

everything else seems to be working that’s working.
I’ll try a reboot when I return from settling WarriorGirl.
Omnes Omnibus
@Roger Moore: Still broken for me as well. FF/Windows 7
Ceci n'est pas mon nym
Alas, we still have the bug that editing a post that was perfectly fine causes it to go into moderation.
humboldtblue
@Roger Moore:
Sorry, man, I take it back.
Goddammit, Cole!
@Omnes Omnibus:
If it’s worth anything because this coding shit is just another in the nearly universal subjects I am wholly ignorant of, I am using Windows 10
SueMack
I mostly lurk, but let’s see what I can do…..
Villago Delenda Est
Alain, I’m still getting strange formatting changes every time I refresh a page. Sometimes the formatting changes kill scrolling the page up and down. Strange boxes show up. Firefox with Win 10.
Haven’t had a page not found problem though since your update. Fingers crossed!

on iPad with edit
let’s see
o.k.
Keith P.
This is just me, but I would not have used a button style on the recipe headings…makes “Share” look like something I can click, which is a bit confusing on a smartphone given that they sometimes don’t register button clicks anyway.
MattF
Just testing this.
ETA: So far, so good.
ETAETA: How about a choice of ‘comic sans’ font? Is there a ‘Pay attention to me!’ font? (Trump Sans, I guess.)
p.a.
And Android Chrome next
This is an edit
FlyingToaster
Okay, post-reboot. No change.
So:
Mac El Capitan
Firefox 48.0.2
Empty Gray bar, non-responsive, above / semi-attached to comment box with resizable lower right-hand corner.
test.
Elizabelle
We can haz evening open thread?
Good evening peeps.
Alain the site fixer
@Villago Delenda Est: please let me know if this still happens later. I’m not doing anything else tonight so I’m hoping some issues are cache related.

@M. Bouffant:
@henqiguai:
Does every Balloon Juice reader have a different set of problems? I’ve had the scroll up/scroll down buttons since, what? last December or January or whenever Alain first showed up to fix things. I use them constantly, they’re great, but it sounds as though they’re brand new for M. Bouffant and henqiguai.
Omnes Omnibus
@SiubhanDuinne: “All happy families are alike; each unhappy family is unhappy in its own way.”
FlyingToaster
@FlyingToaster: And edit not available.
Cookies are ON, Noscript is only blocking Facebook, BlockSite is blocking Facebook and Ora.TV (because it crashes my browser); I suspect I’ll have to load each of the stylesheets manually in order to do a force-reload of the styles. And even then Firefox is flaky about styles.
I’ll probably go back to commenting from Chrome for the time being. Firefox is for work, after all :)
Omnes Omnibus
@FlyingToaster: I have edit capabilities.
SiubhanDuinne
Hmmm. I still can’t edit. This is just as of today; I’ve rarely had problems previously — or at least I sometimes try to edit and get a big notice telling me I’m not allowed to edit — but this is twice in the last hour or so where I’ve gone back into one of my posts to edit and when I hit “save” the original post appears but without my additions or changes, and with no warning or notice. Really hope this is a temporary hiccup.

Central Planning
@SiubhanDuinne:
Yes. My shoulders ache a little from my morning without.
Roger Moore
@SiubhanDuinne:
Probably not everyone different, but people are using at least 3-4 different browsers (Chrome, Firefox, Safari, maybe even IE) on multiple different platforms (Windows, Mac, iOS, Android, GNU/Linux), with different versions of both browser and platform. Plus people are using different plug-ins that can change the behavior of the site beyond those differences. It doesn’t add up to everyone having different problems, but it does probably mean that no two people are seeing the site with exactly the same setup. That heterogeneity is part of the reason people like Alain have jobs.
ETA: And I can ETA!
Gin & Tonic
@Central Planning: Without what?
FlyingToaster
@Omnes Omnibus: It’s only on Firefox. Both Chrome and Safari work just fine.
SiubhanDuinne
@Roger Moore:
Thank you! That is beautifully clear and explicative!
Schlemazel
@efgoldman:
So you have forgotten the last big change & how we managed to drive off some poor kid who was only trying to help?
SiubhanDuinne
@Schlemazel:
I miss Tommy. I really do.
Gin & Tonic
@Schlemazel: Some saw that process a little differently.
Miss Bianca
Hmmm…now all of a sudden I’m seeing masses of either HTML or JavaScript up top and on the sides. But that could be because I’m using Knoppix and Iceweasel instead of my usual Safari. Onward!
Ruckus
Alan
Now after the fix, the back button doesn’t take you back to where you were inside a post. So if I click on someone’s name and then the back button I leave the post and return to the main page. Being able to stay in a post makes i very handy to follow different bits of a thread. This was the way it had been just before the fix, which was fixed the last fix.
Can that be fixed?
amk
@Ruckus: Seconded. Back button gone back to being screwy. Desktop version. Firefox.
Steeplejack
Haven’t read this thread yet, but the back-button functionality is broken for me (desktop site, Firefox, Win10).
henqiguai
@SiubhanDuinne(#43):
Nope, the scroll buttons are not new to me; just that until I restarted things the scroll-to-the-top button was not present. Restart/reboot brought it back.
Denali
Still can’t access the site via
Safari on my ipad.
