Folks, the update hit last afternoon and it was pretty undramatic. There are likely a few issues here and there, so please use this post to report them. I will be working on other things this morning and early pm, but will check this post before I consider my work done.
There is no guarantee that I will fix everything or do what is asked, but I will see what I can do for things that make sense or are truly bad. Thanks to all for your kind words and help in identifying remaining issues.
ETA: Back button is fixed and HTML help hidden for now. I know there are a few small issues to solve on the mobile site too, but since most users access the desktop site, it’s my priority right now.

For whatever reason, BJ no longer tries to break my browser (Firefox) when I first load the site. For that, I am eternally grateful.

If you had not posted this, I would not know that there was an update.

Steeplejack, did you get my email message from about a week ago? Not sure you check that email account very often.

Back button is working for me in Firefox.
But I’ve lost the HTML buttons.
Alain, I have a request. Is there a way to strip playlist information from embedded Youtube videos? Mayhew’s post this morning embedded a video from a playlist, which means we were all treated to the autoplay of a clip from a Russian dub of the Tinja Minja Ninja Turtles after what he intended to embed.

@Sister Rail Gun of Warm Humanitarianism: No idea how to do that; perhaps use the Contact form to get Mayhew to do that? I expect it’s in the youtube account side of things rather than what I see on this website.

@FlyingToaster: Which plugin do you think? I cannot get the html help to popup today though I know it did yesterday. I’ve even restored the previous version file which worked and now it doesn’t. I’m going mad here trying to figure out why it’s not working, so any clues would be VERY appreciated!
FlyingToaster
@Bob the site tester: I’m actually rolling through them two at a time (disable one, enable the previously enabled one) to see. I have about 15 minutes before I’m committed elsewhere.

@WaterGirl: I will investigate, but I remember reading of some upcoming changes to browsing and the Back button specifically. Prepare yourself(ves) – it’s likely that the back/forward function for browser navigation may be altered. Too many users accidentally going back or forward in forms from what I recall. So improving the experience for many, but making it tougher for a few…
Bob the site tester
@FlyingToaster: Thanks for any and all help. I can’t understand why what worked isn’t now when it’s something as simple and stupid as an HTML button to display text! If I can’t find it soon, I’ll just disable it and figure out something.
FlyingToaster

@Bob the site tester: I did not read about that, so I had no idea.
That would be a really bad trade-off in my opinion – many many people here complained when the back button stopped working before. As I recall, that was the #1 item for many people.
If that’s the case, this “upgrade” was very poorly thought through.
Bob the site tester
@WaterGirl: And all, try Back now. I re-applied the fix which was somehow missed in my previous notes. That’s been corrected.

@WaterGirl: I didn’t mean to confuse you – that’s not a choice I’m making, nor the theme makers. I’m talking Browsers and standards of functionality. There may be a point next year where that functionality has been altered in one, then many, browsers. Just giving you a warning of what I’ve read/

Everything seems to be working except for Basic HTML Tips.
And the Comment Box is still resizable.
Bob the site tester
@ShadeTail: That’s one that is bizarre. I’ve been researching it and this is a core WordPress function. It should automatically insert anchors when an author does the Read More button but it doesn’t. It’s not the most urgent issue, to be honest, and I’m a little hesitant to wade into WordPress code in fear of causing other harm!
Bob the site tester
@FlyingToaster: Not sure the resizable is bad. I prefer that for text entry fields where I might compose a few sentences! I did remove the HTML tips for now.

@Alain the site fixer: If you mean the back button, nope not on my computer. But ALT <--- is working again.
FlyingToaster
@Alain the site fixer: Believe me, we noticed :)
There seems to be a Greasemonkey script problem on Firefox; when I disabled it, the formatting buttons came back.
The TrollBGone Greasemonkey script seems to be the problem; use Cleek’s Pie filter instead.
Time to check the cake!
EBT
The social media buttons no longer stack in a screen tall column.
WaterGirl
@Bob the site tester: I guess if that happens, I will just have to keep switching browsers until the last one falls to the silly idea that it’s a good idea to change the back button, and by then hopefully the pendulum will have swung back in the right direction with back buttons coming back in at least one browser! :-)
Just curious, are you with the group that is providing the themes?
WaterGirl
@TaMara (HFG): What is But ALT < — ?
WaterGirl
I’m wondering if it would make sense to make a change to the “take me to the top” and “take me to the bottom” arrows. I still can’t seem to remember whether it’s the one on the left or the one on the right that takes me up vs. down.
What if you moved the “take me to the bottom” arrow to the right side of the screen instead of to the left? Seems like it would be intuitive then… the one at the bottom takes you up, the one at the top takes you down. What do you think?
WaterGirl
An old request from the last round of changes, submitting again…
Because a page reload often loses it’s place and leaves you somewhere other than the last comment you have read, I often click the date/time stamp to anchor on the last comment i have read before I click to reload or refresh the page.
After the previous upgrade, when you click the date/time stamp to anchor, it slides up too far and you can’t see the comment number. Seems like it would be an easy fix.
amk
Back button is baaaack. Thanks. It was such a pita.
Alain the site fixer
@WaterGirl: Don’t you see the arrows? In the center of each block is an arrow/carat pointing down/up
Alain the site fixer
@WaterGirl: I’ll add this to the list. This will likely need help from theme support folks as the scrolling seems to be handled by their programming and when I meddle, it often has tertiary effects unnoticed until a later mystery is reported, then solved.
Alain the site fixer
@WaterGirl: No. Tommy and I chose the theme based on a week long eval and so I’ve become very knowledgeable about it. I’m self employed.

Hello. Chrome on Win10 here. Using Ublock Origin, and Cleek’s pie filter with Greasemonkey.

@I’mNotSureWhoIWantToBeYet: And, of course, editing my original reply puts me in moderation (as usual).

Thanks for all your efforts, Alain.

Here’s a strange one (and probably not even worth fixing):
When I post from IE (yeah, I know, but it’s what’s on the work computer), my nym often shows up in little tiny letters, small enough that they make me think of Donald Trump’s fingers. I don’t know if anyone else sees it that way, so it may not matter, but it’s odd.
Alain the site fixer
@I’mNotSureWhoIWantToBeYet: I do susepect the apostrophe. Especially since it’s a special character – their logic for treating special chars probably fails with the second reply/embed of the name.
Alain the site fixer
@randy khan: Odd, indeed. I swear I’ve seen the same. What OS? I’ll try in my win 10, but I’ve abandoned older MS OSes.
ETA: It performed normally for me in Win10/IE.
Terry the tester
@randy khan: Ok, so now I’m trying in IE on Win 10.
Terry the tester
Here is a second comment
Steeplejack
@randy khan:
I see it occasionally (in other people’s posts) and have never been able to figure out what causes it.
WaterGirl
@Alain the site fixer: I do see the box with the arrows, but the white arrow is so small that I really see it more as a dot without distinguishing features unless I really look closely.
Common sense-wise, it just seems like when you are wanting to do an up or down movement, it’s kind of counter-intuitive to have to go left and right in order to implement up or down. Does that make sense? With the way I have suggested, your hand always moves to the right – and then you choose between the arrows that are up and down.
WaterGirl
@Alain the site fixer: I know that. I was trying to ask if he was one of the “these support folks” and just didn’t manage to ask my question clearly. I will try again!
Is Bob the site tester one of the theme support guys?
WaterGirl
@I’mNotSureWhoIWantToBeYet: @Steeplejack: Okay, that was funny! I laughed out loud.
Steeplejack
@WaterGirl:
I think Bob and Alain are the same guy.
(I e-mailed you.)
WaterGirl
@randy khan: @Alain the site fixer: @Terry the tester:
Alain, I believe Randy is experiencing the same thing I told you about and that you and I tested together during the last round. The nym stays tiny until the 5-minue edit window is over, and then when you reload after that, the nym is the normal size.
Alain the site fixer
@WaterGirl: lol, no Bob is me in a non-logged in browser and Terry is me in another non-logged-in browser. It helps to have multiples…
I’ll see what I can do on the arrows. The theme came with the down one and with their help I added the up one. I’ll take a look at the CSS and see if I can just switch their positions.
WaterGirl
@Steeplejack: See my comment at #73 or so.
WaterGirl
@Alain the site fixer:
Okay, that makes perfect sense, now that you have explained it.
Hafabee
OK, here’s a new one, it started awhile back, not sure exactly when, I noticed it a week or so ago, but as long as you are mucking around …
I have BJ in my rss newsreader (newsblur) feed. All posts show up fine except for Cole’s posts — none of them seem to be showing up in the rss feed.
Steeplejack
@WaterGirl:
No, this is a different thing. I regularly see my nym (and the comment, I think) slightly smaller until the five-minute window elapses. What he’s talking about is the nyms of the addressees in the comment being really tiny, as in classified-ads text size vs. regular news story text size in a dead-tree paper (to use a hoary comparison).
ETA: On this one just my nym is small—but slightly smaller, not super small.
WaterGirl
@Hafabee: Cole’s posts show up in my RSS feed, which I view in Leaf on my Mac, which is fed by Feedly.
MacBook Air, Mac OS X, Safari
WaterGirl
@Steeplejack: Got it. (sort of) What do you mean by “the nyms of the addressees in the comment”?
To use your comment as an example, which of the items in the block quote would be tiny?

Alain the site fixer

Steeplejack
@WaterGirl:
In the example, “WaterGirl” would be extremely tiny. Although, now that I think about it, it seems like it happens when there are two or three addressees. But it is rare, in any case. Not like the “slightly smaller for five minutes” thing, which happens a lot, if not every time.
WaterGirl
@a hip hop artist from Idaho (fka Bella Q): No, it was the same email I sent you, and I know you got that one. Hadn’t tried to email again, just mentioned the email to Steep on one of the upgrade threads.

Edit: and of course all 3 nyms are the regular size. Because you know they never do this stuff when they know you are watching…

As I said, it’s very rare, and it may happen only with Internet Explorer. I don’t think it warrants “hunt and destroy” at this point.

Testing to confirm my recollection that the tiny nym issue does not affect my MacOS 10.9.5/Safari 9.1.3 laptop.
And I was wrong – it does show up in a tiny font when I post from Safari. So maybe I have some strange setting going on.
