Doesn’t matter much, but King tweeted that this morning, well before the debates.
Still a fascist dick.

I have to say, I do have a major dilemma with my upcoming canvassing trip to Nevada: which knitting project should I bring for the 8-10 hour (roundtrip) bus trip? I don’t want to bring my wrap party shawl because it’s a little delicate and involves juggling two balls of contrasting yarn.
Maybe I’ll keep working on my Travel Shawl (Veronik Avery) and bring an additional small project.

From what I’ve read, King represents the factory pig producers whose lakes of manure slurry are poisoning groundwater all over the Midwestern watershed. Plus the rump of aging, angry white farmers who resent how the best of their kids got the hell out of Iowa, leaving the meatcutting factory jobs to ‘documented enough for agricorps purposes’ Hispanics who’ve replaced the 1950s general stores and diners with taquerias and bodegas.

Yes, it may have all been bullshit, but Trump was focused and aggressive and sounded coherent for long stretches of the first half. That’s all a lot of people would want from him. Then Hillary baited him on his taxes and he disintegrated, spending the rest of the night whining and reassuring himself how great he is. He got some oomph back for the racial healing segment, but he wasted that to lecture blacks and Hispanics about how they need tough cops to save them from their own violent gangs.

Is it just me or did Trump speak for like 2/3 of the time?

@Amir Khalid:
Yeah, that happened to her in 2012, too — you tell the world you’re planning to rush the stage during the debate, FOR JUSTICE, and the Secret Service is required to pretend you might be a threat to someone other than yourself.
This time Hofstra warned her that she wouldn’t be permitted on campus, so she was happy to send out tweets about her bold progressive self getting abused by the po-po, just like MLKing (or Lyndon LaRouche). I’d say she was delusional, but it’s pretty clear she’s getting what she really wants: attention.

PS. You know what’s going to happen: Even though Trump loses, the US is going to have a bond selloff simply because Trump got so close to winning, there will be a currency crisis, and Hillary will be dogged for four years by the “Hillary Depression.”

Big thing for Trump and Co. is bashing Holt, who was pretty tough on Trump, alot more challenges on the birther and Iraq stuff — rightfully, since those were such obvious lies. I expect a lot of post-debate reax is going to be on just the flood of Trump lies, because so many in this debate were easily disproven — the China global warming one, for instance.

Also on Steve King, no surprise he’s even more out of the closet now. One unremarked thing this election, is that the one and only state where Trump has made clear gains (at least based on polls) is Iowa. There must be something racist in the water there.

P.S. As it turns out, I will have to redo the prep in the next few days for a CT scan of my innards because the doc couldn’t complete the colonoscopy today; hysterectomy left things a bit jumbled inside, so discretion is the better part of not poking a hole in my colon. There was nothing wrong with the bit he did get to see, though, no polyps or anything else other than one tiny diverticulum.
I’m using a different medium for the prep next time, not Gatorade.

King is NW Iowa, mostly. Ames is a college town, but I’ve no idea how liberal it is. Less liberal than Iowa City, but that’s not saying much.
What kills me is that they put Branstad back in the governor’s seat. He’s been stinking the place up pretty badly since he got back in.

Okay, after a quick peruse of Teh Intarweebs (hat tip to John Scalzi there), I’m settling on the theory that somewhere in DJT’s boiler room, Edmund Blackadder and Baldrick are toiling furiously away trying to avert an oncoming catastrophe.

Missed the debate due to work (yay?), but the picture from the previous thread has been picked up on the interwebz, I’m happy to report. From what I’ve read, many people are asking about Trump and what he may have enjoyed before the debate. Trump’s taxes must be a goldmine of damaging information. He gets so rattled when they’re mentioned.
When she wins they should pass a rule or law that the Presidential candidates have to release 5 years of tax returns. Completely reasonable requirement. It’s ridiculous that people aren’t allowed to see something that is so obviously relevant. Regular people turn over tax returns all the time as an ordinary check on fraud. If they can do it, Donald Trump can do it.

@cokane: … I do wonder now if Trump thinks about backing out of one of the last debates.
I started wondering about that when I got up. No way he can out-prepare her after a lifetime of winging it. I think he bails, citing “unfairness”. His fans will be happy, #NeverTrump-ers will have even more contempt for him. I don’t see this performance winning over folks. Quite the contrary.

@cokane: They are all out of the closet now. Deadbeat Donald’s contribution to Western Civilization will be the emboldening of ignorant bigots everywhere. Trump’s speeches and tweets and the coverage the media have given them, have normalized the smearing and slandering of numerous groups [who to be fair, have always had to deal with this crap but perhaps on a smaller and more personal scale] of people.
I have seen it up here in Canada as well. The Donald’s upcoming crushing defeat at the polls will do a lot for the US and other Western countries to show some push back on intolerance and ignorance.

@qwerty42:
Trump repeated to reporter as he went through the press pool right after the debate that he could have but didn’t use Bill’s extracurricular activities against Hillary as if he should get a medal for holding back. I don’t think he will back out because he is just itching to use that as if it was a bombshell and would rattle Hillary as if Hillary would suddenly crumble on stage. What a dope. Massive narcissists always think their bullying and threats will intimidate anyone in their way. Wrong.
I love the sweating, sniffing Trump saying Hillary has no stamina. Projection much?
Scotian
@NorthLeft12: With all due respect, I’ll wait until AFTER I see that “upcoming crushing defeat” before having faith in it happening, AND the CPC managed to hold onto the Official Opposition and almost their entire 2011 vote with the most racist and vile election campaign I have seen and heard of in our federal political history undercuts your argument too. Sure, Harper got taken out hard by Trudeau, but much of that was because of the way he governed and ignored the rule of law for almost a decade, not so much because of appealing to bigotry and racism. What we have seen in the rise of Trump and Trumpism has no analogue in our federal politics, really, and while I so desperately want to see a Trump slaughter politically speaking, even if it happens I fear the rising swell of racism in the western world will not be so pushed back on because of it.
Look, I WANT to be able to agree with you, I simply can’t because I think you have not accurately reflected what happened up here on racism and bigotry, and I fear you are not only being overly premature on how the election will end, I also believe that your premise of what it will mean in the fight against intolerance rising in western nations as a result is also overly generous. I see that rise being fueled by the great transitions and uncertainties in not just economics thanks to trade but also culturally fueled in no small part not just by immigration but he incredibly shrinking world our modern telecommunications reality a la internet/social media also creates. Trump may be feeding on it, and in turn feeding that fire, but the core elements/coals, those are something he has little to nothing to do with.
YMMV, but that is how I see it. Human nature is what it is, the best of it and the worst, and we can never afford to forget that.

King, like our own detestable Steve Pearce, is in a well-protected, geographically delineated bubble-of-a district. He’ll be re-elected until they redraw the lines or the population somehow dies off and is replaced by thinking voters. Which might also mean he is there for life.
