Come for the politics, stay for the snark.

It dawned on me that a lot of pundits – heck, even PBO – are saying that Trump “didn’t prepare”. Even bigger picture, it’s not that he didn’t prepare, it’s that there’s no ‘there’ there. There was no need to have him rehearse his policy positions because he doesn’t really have anything other than his own ego and need for attention.

So it’s no wonder that he “didn’t prepare” – how do you prepare when you don’t really exist as much of anything, much less anything of value?

Hate to be a skunk at the picnic even as I enjoy watching ‘old little hands’ get his ass beaten in but. This guy has more lives than Wiley E. Coyote. Coming out of the convention and his comments on the judge and the Kahn family, among other things, he was as much as 12 points down. Now it looks like the race is near to a dead heat. I understand all of the caveats about the polls and post convention bounces but he did wipe out most of the difference. He is still the same buffoon that he was in August but stands a much better chance of winning in November than any sane person would like to see.
My point – last nights performance may not cost him anything in the polls. In fact he may even gain since he was playing fear factor and the ‘I can fix it’ card. Even if he takes a 1 or 2 point hit the race is still to close and he has come back from the political dead to often. Best to keep the bubbly on ice for a few more weeks .

I mean goddamn, dude you’re running to be the elected leader of the United States and you couldn’t even be arsed to have an understanding of the basics? Sure, I can understand how the “the burn it all down” crowd would love that shit (right up to the point where their shit was burned down too) because it doesn’t take a whole lot of intellectual curiosity to throw a fucking torch.

But anyone else who has a set of firing synapses would prefer someone who has a fucking clue and reasons for doing what they’re doing versus, electing the grown up Eric Cartman to run things for them.

Democrats wee at first complacent, then we became depressed over the polls tightening up so much. Her performance last night has democrats really excited, head over to almost any left site today and you can see we are energized by it. Last night was a signal to Democrats who aren’t enthused or are on the fence about protest voting this year. Trump is awful, Clinton is a fighter, she’s got plans and policies and you’re going to like them. What Trump has you won’t like. Come on off the fence and join the winning team, etc. etc. Good for 1-2 points, maybe a few more if it sinks in with younger voters and older Boomer/GenX leftists who are thinking about sitting this one out exactly what kind of a once-in-a-lifetime threat Trump is to our way of life in this country. (I actually expect it to sink in better with the younger voters than the older leftists to be honest).

    From Tpm

    ByEsme CribbPublishedSeptember 27, 2016, 2:12 PM EDT

More than 80 million people watched the first presidential debate between Donald Trump and Hillary Clinton on Monday night, making it the most watched debate in history.

According to Nielsen research cited in a CNN report, an average of 80.9 million viewers watched the debate across 12 of the channels carrying it live.

Nielsen research does not take into account viewers watching outside of their homes, and the total viewer count does not incorporate ratings for PBS or C-SPAN.

In addition, more than 2.5 million viewers watched the debate via live streams on YouTube, according to the CNN report.

Now that we know that, and the guy in the power suit STILL doesn’t get it as he was shilling for his properties even during the debate, they will more or less call a liar a liar (unless they’re already in the pocket of the other team… see Faux, Drudge, Breitbart, CNBC). Which means that Hillary just has to be Hillary in public, speak to the people of the country and the rest of the pissed off media will essentially let her do so with out any additional knee-capping (although this may not apply to the NY Times because… she ran over their dog, with a forklift).

That One Time Trump Told the Truth During the Debate
    by Nancy LeTourneau
    September 27, 2016 12:41 PM

Given Donald Trump’s history of lying during this campaign, it doesn’t come as much of a surprise to anyone that he told a bunch of whoppers last night that kept the fact-checkers busy. But I thought that his most outrageous lie of the night was actually preceded by a moment of truth.

Just as he did a couple of weeks ago, Trump doubled down last night on lying about his role in the whole birther movement. He blamed it all on Clinton and said that she failed to get President Obama to release his birth certificate. Trump thinks he deserves credit for forcing the issue. He said, “But I was the one that got him to produce the birth certificate. And I think I did a good job.” In other words, he is proud of the fact that he is the one who got the first African American president of this country to release his long-form birth certificate. A statement like that indicates that either the Republican nominee hasn’t talked to many African Americans – or he doesn’t care what they think. For example, here’s Wesley Lowery:

I would also remind you once again of the video Baratunde Thurston made the day the President released his birth certificate.

When Lester Holt pressed the issue with Trump last night and asked – in the context of a discussion about racial healing – what Trump would say to African Americans, the candidate had a rare moment of honesty.

Well, it was very — I say nothing. I say nothing, because I was able to get him to produce it. He should have produced it a long time before. I say nothing.

In other words, on the one thing Trump has done in the last decade that most offended African Americans, he’s got nothing to say when it comes to healing the divide. I take him at his word on that one.

Of course, the very next words out of Trump’s mouth were – in my mind – the most outrageous lies of the night.

But let me just tell you. When you talk about healing, I think that I’ve developed very, very good relationships over the last little while with the African-American community. I think you can see that.

And I feel that they really wanted me to come to that conclusion. And I think I did a great job and a great service not only for the country, but even for the president, in getting him to produce his birth certificate.

The reason I call that the most outrageous is that it is not only a lie. It is also one of the most racist things to come out of the mouth of a presidential candidate in decades. It created a moment when Michelle Obama’s exhortation that “when they go low, we go high” was beyond me.

    Video has bad language.

As I told the spouse last nite, almost every other adult person you see on the streets wants this. Nearly. Every. Other. Person. Wants. Trump. Anarchy.

    Naw – you’re misreading it.

First of all, in this screwy country, only somewhere between half and 2/3rds of the people who can vote actually vote. This is mostly because the other half to 1/3rd assume that things will continue on as they were and think their vote really doesn’t matter. It isn’t that they want Trump, they just assume that Trump would be no worse than anyone else in that position. This makes them kind of stupid and very ignorant, but it doesn’t make them people who want anarchy.

Second of all that 45% of people who vote who will vote Republican no matter what – a chunk of them don’t want Trump either. They just don’t want a Democrat to win it and their only alternative is Trump. Why don’t they want a Democrat? They have their reasons – none of them good and many of them revolving around them being “single issue voters” (abortion, guns, taxes). They also assume that Trump would be no worse than, say, W in that position. Again ignorant and stupid and to a large degree hateful, but not “burn it down” idiots.

I’d peg the “burn it down” crowd to the core of Trump support – which seemed to be somewhere around 30-40% of the Republican primary electorate during primary season. So taking into account people who don’t vote it’s more like every 5th person you see rather than every other person. More if you live in a red state, less in a blue state. Still not good, but not as bad as half the population.

Birtherism is really a problem for Donald and he doesn’t see it – he’s proud of it. His poll numbers started ticking down after he got into it all again at the hotel, and I’m sure his handlers keep trying to explain how it’s not a good look for him (as if anything is, but still…), but, it’s his bread and butter and the thing that propelled him so he’s going to ride it like Slim Pickens. Obama’s approval rating is 55% – one of the biggest tells last night was referring to him as “your” president. It really just doesn’t sit well at all with anyone not a die hard Trumper. He’s just a nasty hateful white supremacist who can’t shine Obama’s shoes, and looks awful in any comparison. Obama is going to put his whole effort into Hillary’s campaign in October, and goad that fat orange fuck into blowing a gasket.

Remember the “Bernie or Busters” at this point are mostly false flag. Real Bernie supporters understand Clinton is the best current option and a lot better than Trump, and that the best option by far for somebody supporting a big leftward shift in the US is to support Clinton now and push forward in future elections. Basically, Trump was so atrocious yesterday the false flaggers are falling back to echoing assorted smears of Clinton to try to discourage left-leaning voters.

    @Matt McIrvin:
    From The NY Post.

Kady Letoksy, a paralegal by day, a waitress and bartender at night at the Tin Lizzy, sat beside him. At 28, she has never voted before, and she is now thinking it might be a good idea to start.

Letosky entered the evening undecided in a town that is heavily Democratic in registration. Her sister and father are on opposite sides of the political aisle. Donald “Trump had the upper hand this evening,” she said, citing his command of the back-and-forth between him and Hillary Clinton.

Reed, 35, is a registered Democrat and small businessman. “By the end of the debate, Clinton never said a thing to persuade me that she had anything to offer me or my family or my community,” he said, sitting at the same bar that has boasted local icons as regulars, such as the late Fred Rogers, and Arnold Palmer, who had his own stash of PM Whiskey hidden behind newer bottles of whiskey for his regular visits.

“Have to say Trump had the edge this evening, he came out swinging but also talked about specifics on jobs and the economy,” Reed said.

Reed said Clinton came across as either smug or as though she was reading her résumé, adding there was nothing on her résumé that touched on his life. “I am a small businessman, a farmer, come from a long line of farmers and coal miners. The policies she talked about tonight ultimately either hurt me or ignore me,” he said……..
“I’ve been a Democrat all of my life, but when Clinton mentions her husband and the jobs he brought to the country in the ’90s, it’s not a fair assessment. She is no moderate Democrat the way he was, her policies would not bring back jobs,” said Nathan Nemick.

It burns Nemick when Clinton references her husband, like she did in the debate on trade and jobs. “She is nothing like him,” he said of the Democrat he admired in his youth…..
Pennsylvania is a high-stakes state for both candidates, but particularly Clinton, and Westmoreland is a high-stakes county, particularly for Trump.

She needs to win this state, and he needs not just to win this county but to do so by 2,000 more votes than Mitt Romney did in 2012……
When Al Gore turned the party toward its progressive wing in 2000, however, he left behind Westmoreland County Democrats.

Democrats here are more traditional in their values — they are pro-gun, pro-life, pro-coal, something today’s Democratic Party has left no room for.

Trump probably connects better with such voters than did Romney in 2012, or John McCain in 2008; a large part of the reason is his outside-the-box style. Yet for him to win the state, such voters need to turn out in force — here and elsewhere — to offset Philly’s overwhelming numbers.

That would make it harder for him, but it still gives him a couple of windows of opportunity. One happens if the polling underestimates his popularity in general, so Democrats feel safe voting third party when they shouldn’t. Another is because there’s a time delay in releasing the numbers; if he’s close to a peak on election day, people might not know it yet and be in a third party mood when they should be panicking and returning to the fold.

    @Dork:
This is going to destroy her support amongst people who wear clothes.
Thankfully, I am immune to this line of attack.

Since I only wear underpants, does that make me “undecided”?

The morning radio news was about how Trump was calling in to various pundits to try to convince them that he won the debate. One newsman asked where Clinton was.

It is just too cool to see her doing the smart thing, out in a rally, capitalizing on the energy from her dazzling debate performance.

Couldn’t you get a job as a sanitation engineer? At least it’s honest work.

That’s a hell of a pic on the video. Is that right before or after her three dragons buzzed the crowd?

A sanitation eng takes actual job skills, such as cleaning up shit instead of spreading it. This one is obviously not skilled enough.
