Come for the politics, stay for the snark.

This isn’t Democrats spending madly. This is government catching up.

The arc of the moral universe does not bend itself. it is up to us to bend it.

Tick tock motherfuckers!

Come on, media. you have one job. start doing it.

We can’t confuse what’s necessary to win elections with the policies that we want to implement when we do.

    Obama is piling on.

    From TPM
    ByMatt ShuhamPublishedSeptember 28, 2016, 9:54 AM EDT

In a phone interview with the Steve Harvey Morning Show Wednesday, President Barack Obama said that Donald Trump “basically insulted women and then doubled down” by bringing up a former Miss Universe’s weight in an post-debate interview.

“You had somebody who basically insulted women and then doubled down I think this morning in terms of how he talks about them and talks about their weight and talks about, you know, how they look instead of the content of their character and their capabilities,” Obama said, “which is not somebody that I want in the Oval Office.”

During Monday night’s presidential debate, Hillary Clinton pointed to Alicia Machado’s experience as Miss Universe, whose parent company Trump bought in 1996, as an example of Trump’s sexism. After Machado won the pageant in 1996, Trump made a public show of forcing her to lose weight.

Appearing on “Fox and Friends” Tuesday morning, Trump justified his 20-year-old behavior by saying that Machado “gained a massive amount of weight, and it was a real problem.”

And goes there, talking about the content of their characters. Listen at the link.

Trump’s advisers come face to face with the fact that their boss is, in fact, Trump:

Campaign advisers to Donald J. Trump, concerned that his focus and objectives had dissolved during the first presidential debate on Monday, plan to more rigorously prepare him for his next face-off with Hillary Clinton by drilling the Republican nominee on crucial answers, facts and counterattacks, and by coaching him on ways to whack Mrs. Clinton on issues even if he is not asked about them.

Whether he is open to practicing meticulously is a major concern, however, according to some of these advisers and others close to Mr. Trump.

There’s a conference call tomorrow night that will hopefully address that subject, but does anyone have any advice for two days of canvassing in Nevada? I’m starting to have a bit more faith that the aftermath of this shitshow will lean positive rather than negative. I’m seeing a lot more reporting calling out Trumps complete lack of personal responsibility (one of those things that conservatives used to claim to care deeply about), about his various double-standards, about the social covenant that used to exist between business and the community and how Trump is really just a Gordon Gekko – but somehow even more immoral and even more damaging to society.

I’m skeptical any of it will stick with conservatives, but maybe some will.

My dad was telling me about his mechanic who he can’t talk politics with because ‘he hates the Democratic party – for reasons he can’t articulate’ and it made me think of Cole’s lesson about what conservatives really think, so I asked him – do you think he hates the Democratic party or do you think he hates Democrats. There’s a big difference between the two – one is an ideological position, the other is an authoritarian one. And upon thinking about it, he thinks I may be right – that his mechanic hates the people, with the exception of the usual token good ones like my dad. If Cole is right, then nothing will change – conservatives will back whatever R comes along because they have so deeply vilified the left that they could never align with us. Clinton is quite literally unhuman in their worldview.

And I think that’s why the GOP could be in such deep trouble. Their inability to be open to Clinton in the face of a candidate that so openly mocks everything that conservatism claimed to be indicates that they will follow this gameplan until there is nothing left of the GOP but embers. This is a political party turned into Branch Davidians seemingly with a similar fate awaiting.

@Major Major Major Major: I’m of two minds about it. The 28 pages don’t definitely prove a link between the hijackers and the Saudi government, but it’s been long alleged that possibly ‘rogue elements’ of the Saudi government might have been involved. That said, it is the main sponsor of Wahhabism as I understand it and most of the terrorism from radical islamic groups have derived from that.

If a loved one of mine had died on 9/11, I’d be all for it, damn the consequences. That said, none of my loved ones were lost. I don’t buy the “if we pass this other governments will sue us too” argument from the administraton. I think that it would be interesting if new facts were found during discovery in any lawsuit against SA, but I doubt they’d turn over anything.

In the end, I think it’s mainly a cosmetic bill to show support for 9/11 families and not much will come of it. It’s probably not smart but I think that most Congresspeople will vote for the override.

    @Major Major Major Major:
9/11 was a tragedy, suing Saudi will not change anything. If there was a case to be made, it should be pursued by the government. Individuals or a group of ordinary citizens suing foreign government sets a bad precedent. If they want to sue, they should sue our government for not pursuing the matter. We are a very litigious nation, if we want to sue the crap out of one another. that is our right, but foreign litigation can result in a lot of unintended consequences.
    I think.

  38. 38.

    ? Martin

    September 28, 2016 at 12:22 pm

@Major Major Major Major: I think that even if Obama agreed with it, he’d need to veto it. It’s as has been explained countless times in the last few days that international alliances are decades in the making and need to be durable. The ability to sue SA may feel gratifying to many Americans but there seems to be very little evidence that the 9/11 bombers were SA agents, or were even known to SA. The previous plot which never took place was planned out of the Philippines by a Pakistani national.

There may seem to be no harm in letting families sue, particularly if you believe the case will be lost, but it’s a breach of protocol between nations. At the very least, if you assume that there was involvement by SA and the US has not taken action on that front on behalf of US citizens, the backers of this legislation are indirectly accusing the US government of covering up 9/11. So yeah, I don’t see how Obama could sign this, and I don’t see how SA couldn’t take the president approving that bill as anything other than an accusation by the US government.

The 28 pages pretty much prove the Saudi *government* wasn’t involved. A few government employees might have been, but since the Bush administration refused to investigate, we’ll never know. Suing the Saudi government makes no sense, but sadly in an election year this is going to go through.

To look on the bright side, if the US government loses immunity in foreign nations as a result, it will make military adventurism more difficult.

They won’t change, it’s not the positions it’s the label, and the people. Obama and Clinton before him have been labeled the most far left wing president in American history who have brought us to the brink of a socialist dystopia. Rational beings know that neither has been left wing at all, they are both centrist democrats. Legislation and ideas that originate at places like CATO and Heritage become toxic as soon as they are embraced by democrats. So it’s not about policy, it’s about the democratic party and who they have embraced. These are not rational people, they are reacting emotionally and until a “true leader” brings them back in from the ledge they live on, they can not be dealt with rationally, they will not be talked down by outsiders, they cure must come from within.

Fox News, bar none, has been without peer in brainwashing millions and millions of older people and shaping their view of the Dems as the exact things the GOP currently does.

@singfoom: You shouldn’t need a voltmeter to install a ceiling fan, a simple circuit tester (2 leads, 1 light to show which is the hot lead) should do the trick. In a typical ceiling box you’ll have 3 wires- black, white, bare. The black should be the hot lead (and if wired properly not hot when the switch is off) the white is the neutral, and the bare is the ground. The instructions with the fan should be enuf to tell you all you need to know about wiring it.

@? Martin: it reminds me of that Jimmy Kimmel sketch after the passage of the ACA… He went out on the streets and talked about what the ACA was going to do… people LOVED it! great concept reining in the insurance companies, affordable healthcare. He described what the law would do… favorable responses across the board. When he presented it first as Obamacare, everyone loathed it.

When people talk about Democratic policies, they love them and a large majority of people are in favor of them. When you associate them with Democrats, suddenly they are turned off.

It’s almost as if the Democrats could simply rebrand themselves (like Century Link has gone through four name changes because as they’ve made each name toxic, they move on to a new one that doesn’t have the bad history so they can continue to provide crappy service to an unsuspecting populace) they could enjoy happy majorities and get shit done. Somehow, someway, the name itself is toxic in the realm of politics and whoever is in charge of the Democratic Party needs to figure out how to change that perception, otherwise, it will always be uphill with this electorate.

A beauty queen usually has a clause in her contract that she will not ruin her looks during her reign, so if Trump had money invested in her he was well within his rights to watch her weight. Whether he needed to be so rude about it is a judgment call, but considering her checkered career I figure they deserve each other. If she wanted to eat her fill she probably shouldn’t have got into beauty queen-ing in the first place.

That’s just so embarrassing for all the people involved with procuring and producing that item. It wasn’t cheap… yet someone, who probably was asked “Shouldn’t we change this? I think she spells it with two “L”s ” and the boss said, Naw, that’s correct just like that!

    WRONG!

Long ago in my second job I wrote documents about changes in software for publication to the entire agency, and would pass them to the boss, two levels above me, for his review. Invariably he would red pencil in something with a grammatical error.

So I would spend lots of time saying the exact same thing W/O the error so as not to embarrass him. Because you know, if it was going out with HIS grammatical error in it, it was going to have his name on it.

I may have (certainly did!) send the occasional rare doc out with the wrong word, misspelled word, misusage, after proofread by me, three co-workers, my boss, still, they leak through.

No way to keep it from happening, this is one more proof of that. No way was it deliberate. Unless the manager approving it is a member of a Trump committee… or something like that.

If there is a nation that doesn’t want this precedent set it’s us. Should the people of Laos who are still losing limbs today to American bombs dropped 50 years ago be able to sue us. What about the people in all the Central and South American countries where we had the CIA interfering,be allowed to sue for the death and devastation we have wrought. 9/11 is so traumatic because it’s the first time in most peoples living memory that we were attacked right here where we live. Pearl Harbor was so long ago, to most of us it’s just part of history. For many nations around the world our fingerprints, are much more vivid and in many cases the harm we have caused is ongoing. We sell weapons, finance dissidents/rebels, for the people caught in the middle in most cases don’t see us as the good guys, should they be able to sue? Nations should be able to sue one another, not citizens. The 9/11 families should sue the Federal Government if they believe that the government is not pursuing a legitimate claim. Either that or get to work and elect people who will pursue a case against Saudi Arabia. Individuals suing foreign governments is a Pandora’s Box we do not want to open.

Yeah, it’s slightly more complicated because there’s two switches so you can have the lights and the fan on separate circuits, so there’s two hot wires and three neutrals (still don’t understand the 3). There’s no ground. I got to the point of wiring it and the wiring mismatch between the fan and the box threw me off so wanted a tester/multimeter to figure out which was which.

But yeah, I think I should get a circuit tester / voltmeter so I can always test to be safe. I’m fine with just about any house repair / upgrade project, but electrical always makes me nervous.

You all have mentioned great reasons why we don’t let individuals sue governments — that is what governments are supposed to handle. First by diplomacy and then by war if necessary. The individual suing a government is always a troublesome matter because governments (administrations, kings, etc. change and their policies do as well. To literally litigate the past prevents governments from moderating instead of the instinct to hunker down….

But the reciprocity doctrine is really what will keep the congress from overriding the veto — If we allow this, countries all over the world will start to allow their citizens to sue the U.S. For wars, for weapons, for environmental disasters, for police efforts and interdictions, etc.
    Not.Gon.Ha.Pen.

Federal judge blocks Illinois’ same-day voter registration program
Republicans have been granted an injunction blocking the state’s same-day registration program.

On National Voter Registration Day, a U.S. District Court in Illinois granted a motion blocking the state’s same-day voter registration program.

The program has been offered by counties with populations greater than 100,000. Shortly after a pilot version of the program proved to be a success during the 2014 election, a bill making it a permanent feature of the state’s election law was signed by outgoing Gov. Pat Quinn (D). More than 110,000 voters registered on election day last March.

But, as ThinkProgress has previously reported, members of the Illinois Republican Party sued a couple months ago to block the program. They argue it gives unfair advantage to Democratic candidates who generally do well in high-population counties.

In a ruling issued Tuesday, U.S. District Court Judge Samuel Der-Teghiayan granted the Republicans’ motion for a preliminary injunction shutting down the program for now.
“The application of this legislation favors the urban citizen and dilutes the vote of the rural citizen,” Der-Teghiayan writes. “The Supreme Court has made it clear that legislation cannot ‘restrict the political participation of some in order to enhance the relative influence of others.’”
In a statement sent to ThinkProgress, Common Cause Illinois’ Lead Organizer Trevor Gervais expressed disappointment about today’s ruling.
“To suspend Election Day Registration and suppress the vote less than two weeks before the voter registration deadline will hurt communities across Illinois who were counting on being able to register and vote on November 8,” he said. “The court’s decision to side with a conservative group with ties to ALEC and the Koch brothers, combined with Governor Rauner’s recent veto of Automatic Voter Registration, signals a step backwards for voting rights in Illinois and continues a nationwide trend of coordinated and well-funded voter suppression efforts.”

Gervais told ThinkProgress he expects Illinois Attorney General Lisa Madigan (D) to appeal the decision. He said he expects the Seventh Circuit Court of Appeals to overturn the injunction in time to restore the program ahead of election day on November 8.

Depends on how much you’re going to use it. If it’s something you’ll use a couple of times a year for little home projects, don’t waste your money on a super fancy one; just get a cheap one with the basic functions. Most of them use standard connections for the leads, so you can buy those separately to get alligator clips or whatever if the brand that looks good doesn’t have the exact leads you want. Go to Lowe’s and buy the next to most expensive multi-meter, if it has both probes (pointy ends for the leads) and clips that’s a good thing.

Another inexpensive gadget you want is a circuit tester, which buzzes when you probe a circuit that is hot, electrified. This is good to keep from getting burnt and falling off that ladder.

Frankly, I would hire a local electrician who has done a lot of ceiling fans, as they are trickier than it looks, esp with regard to balancing them so they don’t sway back and forth.

Plus the wiring can be more complex for multi speeds and directions, although the tendency to use remotes makes that less of an issue.

    Whoa.

I would recommend you never take a supervisor job. Almost everything Trump did in this situation is illegal in California under sexual harassment or hostile workplace laws. If you have an employee not meeting the terms of their employment there are a whole host of things you can do to address that problem. Insulting them is not one of them. Embarrassing them in a public spectacle is definitely not one of them. That contract almost certainly stated what the consequences would be of not meeting the contract – namely they would be stripped of their crown and of the financial benefits that came with it.

In my experience, supervisors that step beyond standard hiring policies are doing so because they have taken some personal offense to the situation and the standard policies aren’t designed to repair their ego so they seek out some cause of action that will. Not often enough does that desire result in their termination.

There is no excuse for Trump’s actions. Any normal supervisor doing that with a semi-competent HR department would be terminated for that behavior with the blessing of the lawyers.

Simple projects being easier to frog or tink, plus also easier pick it up and put it down without worrying overmuch about where you are. Ms. Machado sounds like a very special person, and real reactions by real people to Hillary Clinton continue to demonstrate the warmth and likeability of the former Secretary.

She said that by the time you pay for the charm school, the modeling school, the hair, the dental work, the makeup artist, the podiatrist, and on and on and on, you’re doing well to break even. It doesn’t become profitable until you get up into the higher levels. It was an interesting conversation.

He said his dad “really took the high ground where he had the opportunity to go very, very low.”

“I’m really proud of him for doing that. And I think a lot of people recognize that,” Eric Trump said. “I don’t know, I think that took a lot of courage in so many regards and I think he really answered that well and took the high ground and kept the high road.”

I can see where being underweight is important to your ability to do the beauty queen job, although even there, I would think long and hard before calling it essential.

I wouldn’t say that being “underweight” is important to being a beauty queen. I would say that what’s important for a beauty queen is for her to maintain her beauty, which would mean not drastically changing her appearance. That would include not putting on a lot of weight, but also not losing a ton of weight if she started out on the heavier side. It might also cover things like obvious tattoos, piercings, wild hair style or color, and the like. The point is that she won her job at least in part through her appearance, so she has an obligation to maintain her appearance as part of keeping the job.

    @Eric U.:

My understanding of the current oil prices is that the Saudis are trying their best to kill alternative energy development. It’s certainly working with fracking for natural gas, but then again, that was a little too successful.

I don’t think that’s it, really. The US has become the largest oil/gas producer in the world under Obama. Matched SA in 2011 and last year we were a good 30% ahead of SA – and the US doesn’t respond to OPEC production interests. We’ve been driving down prices in the west for the last few years, and with local alternative energy development means that the US is steadily moving from importer to exporter status. That’s a massive threat to SA and OPEC. And if that wasn’t enough pressure on them, Iran being a pariah nation meant that their oil was largely off the market, but Obama’s deal with Iran changed that, adding yet more supply.

SA is under tremendous pressure right now. They are burning through their cash reserves at an alarming pace. 90% of their revenues are from oil and 70% of citizens work for the government. If oil prices stay low, the country will be in economic crisis within just a few years and may join its neighbors by having public uprisings.

I suspect the push to cut production was intended to undermine the US shale/fracking economy and to force the US to reduce production by pushing prices below break-even costs for certain extraction techniques/regions. The problem is that the US has done a lot more work in terms of lowering the cost of extraction (in ways that environmentalists are rightly upset about) than SA has done in terms of getting their own economy to a sustainable point.

I think the US has determined that Iran’s regional interests are no more of a threat to the US than SAs interests, and that the US would be better off with a weaker SA hand in the region who have been much more influential of global terrorists than the Iranians have. Israel would disagree with that trade-off, but I bet almost all of Europe would prefer to see that shift of power take place. And that shift of power is mostly happening in the oil markets.

There’s no manipulation taking place. The oil market is almost impossible to manipulate. You’ll get political effects in the market in various ways, but that’s not conspiratorial – it’s just a reflection of what the future likely holds.

Michelle isn’t buying the new non-birther Trump.
    WATCH

Michelle Obama slammed Donald Trump in a Wednesday speech for his “insincere” walkback of his long history of boosting birther conspiracy theories.

“There are those who questioned and continue to question for the past eight years, whether my husband was even born in this country,” Obama said in remarks while campaigning for Hillary Clinton at LaSalle University in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania.

She slammed the birther movement for asking “hurtful, deceitful questions, deliberately designed to undermine his presidency,” before turning her attention to Trump in particular.

While the first lady did not mention the GOP presidential nominee by name, she said that questions about Obama’s legitimacy as President “cannot be blamed on others or swept under the rug by a sentence uttered at a press conference.”

In a much-ballyhooed thirty-second “announcement” earlier in September, Trump said that he “finished” the birther movement, claimed credit for Barack Obama releasing his longform birth certificate and blamed Hillary Clinton’s campaign for starting the movement.

The idea that Clinton’s 2008 campaign started the conspiracy theory that Obama cannot legitimately serve as President because he was not born in the United States has been thoroughly debunked.

The big guns are out, now they have him on the ropes, they’re not letting up.

Of all the post-debate news, what I like best is the rush by Trump’s advisers to pin the blame on the candidate personally for his poor performance rather than take any heat themselves. It looks like the NY TImes may have the most complete reporting (nice going!), but TPM has a succinct summary. Apologies if it has already been quoted above.

Seven campaign aides and advisors who spoke to the Times on condition of anonymity attributed the subpar performance to Trump’s lack of focus in prep meetings, unwillingness to practice using a podium or doing mock debates, and reliance on advisers like retired Army general Michael Flynn, who has no experience with presidential debates.

To risk angering the candidate like this suggests that they are looking ahead to their next jobs and more worried that a prospective employer might hold them responsible for the looming disaster than worried that their current employer might punish them for disloyalty.

I guess one of the hardest realities that is difficult to reconcile is how each side is perceived based on what they say…

Hillary, hasn’t threatened to take away ALL of the guns, just introduce some common sense gun controls and checks. Hasn’t advocated for open borders and unequivocal amnesty for all illegal immigrants. She doesn’t believe in persecuting Christians, just to stop persecuting everyone else based on race, creed or gender.

    Yet….

Trump has stated that he believes that our allies should “pay for play” in regards to our treaty obligations. He has advocated stopping all immigration and mass deportation of people here NOW, that are actively contributing to our economy. Has questioned why not go nuclear to solve the problems in the world and we’re not talking power plants. Has repeated demonstrated that he takes each criticism personally and has lashed out at all of his critics repeatedly and advocated their death or assault.

Yet, every wingnut takes it on faith that Clinton will do what she’s never said and that Trump won’t do what he has said.

In other words, he wants to rewrite the contract because the contractual remedy is not what he wants. Trump could have simply terminated her contract if there was a breach (I think most of those pageants have provisions for the runner up to serve). No, he wanted to publicly humiliate her because he’s an insecure asshole with a compulsion to publicly show dominance over women to cover his empty soul, hence his incessant boasting about his amorous conquests to panty sniffers like Howard Stern.

Actually, Trump Should Skip the Next Two Debates

it’s near impossible for any nonphilosopher or nonexpert in the mechanisms of the universe and freewill to say whether Trump “could” have prepared for last night’s debate or “might” be capable of doing so next time. What is certain is that he didn’t, and as the night wore on his answers got closer and closer to gibberish, his lack of knowledge strikingly apparent. I don’t see that changing…….

Can his campaign withstand the repercussions of two more bad performances and the resulting effect on his psyche? And why should it? As painful as it is for pundits and television executives to admit, skipping the debate is probably the right thing for Trump to do. There remains very little evidence that Americans punish politicians for procedural decisions, even if they violate long-held norms…..
If he has been more successful over the past month, it is in part because he has appeared only in venues, such as Fox News, that are friendly and controllable.

As occasionally ridiculous as they are, the debates remain one of the better ways for viewers to learn about the candidates. If Trump walks away, he just might benefit. And as is always the case when he benefits, everyone else loses.

    Poor Donald. No poor America.

I read it but I’m not convinced. To pull out, no matter how it might be dressed up, would be a concession of inadequacy. I would call it unthinkable, but of course so is not producing taxes and an array of other behaviors, so I suppose anything is thinkable this year. Nevertheless, if I were Trump (mental floss, please) I would balance the inevitable disgrace of a no-show against the possibility that crowd questions and Mike Wallace will make Rounds II and III more congenial than Round I.

Until one day, the sequel to a book I’d reviewed fairly favorably came out in hardback, & not only did it feature a blurb from my review of the earlier volume on the back cover; mirabile dictu, it appeared under my own name
