Balloon Juice

Come for the politics, stay for the snark.

It may be funny to you motherfucker, but it’s not funny to me.

Shallow, uninformed, and lacking identity

Yeah, with this crowd one never knows.

Infrastructure week. at last.

Hot air and ill-informed banter

Impressively dumb. Congratulations.

New McCarthy, same old McCarthyism.

The arc of history bends toward the same old fuckery.

If you’re pissed about Biden’s speech, he was talking about you.

Our job is not to persuade republicans but to defeat them.

Some judge needs to shut this circus down soon.

Republicans are the party of chaos and catastrophe.

My years-long effort to drive family and friends away has really paid off this year.

I’d try pessimism, but it probably wouldn’t work.

When do we start airlifting the women and children out of Texas?

People are complicated. Love is not.

Republicans are radicals, not conservatives.

Imperialist aggressors must be defeated, or the whole world loses.

A snarling mass of vitriolic jackals

Within six months Twitter will be fully self-driving.

Just because you believe it, that doesn’t make it true.

Republicans do not pay their debts.

Happy indictment week to all who celebrate!

Optimism opens the door to great things.

The deplorables are starting to wonder if govt has been lying to them about Hurricane Matthew intensity to make exaggerated point on climate

— MATT DRUDGE (@DRUDGE) October 6, 2016

@DRUDGE please get on the next flight to Palm Beach and collect some data, for science.

— 1st Amendment Person (@psychic_twin) October 6, 2016

I sincerely doubt Matt Drudge is dumb enough to try this (or to believe it), but no doubt there’s the odd Trumplodyte idiot already planning for their cellphone SUCK ON THIS MATTHEW WOO HOO!!! videos to go viral. Which would be fine — some people can only learn experientially, as when they get literally thumped around by natural forces — except that rescuing these sorry putzes will put first responders in harm’s way. TPM, “Conservative Hurricane Truthers Downplay Danger Of Hurricane Matthew”:

Hours ahead of Hurricane Matthews’ landfall on Florida’s Atlantic coast, some climate change skeptics downplayed the danger of what meteorologists say could be the worst such storm since Hurricane Katrina…

“This storm will kill you. Time is running out,” Gov. Rick Scott (R) said in a press conference Thursday. “There are no excuses. You need to leave. Evacuate, evacuate, evacuate. Are you willing to take a change to risk your life? Are you willing to take a gamble? That’s what you’re doing.”

Yet in the face of those pleas conservative aggregator Matt Drudge, who has a house in Florida, tweeted that “The deplorables are starting to wonder if govt has been lying to them about Hurricane Matthew intensity to make exaggerated point on climate,” and “Hurricane Center has monopoly on data. No way of verifying claims. Nassau ground observations DID NOT match statements! 165mph gusts? WHERE?”…

On Wednesday, Rush Limbaugh expressed a similar sentiment on his radio show, saying that government scientists might be “playing games” with storm data in order to “sell” the role climate change has played in making hurricanes stronger…

Listening to the scary forecast. What are the odds that Trump uses the storm hitting Mar-a-Lago as an excuse to flake on the debate?

— Bob Schooley (@Rschooley) October 6, 2016

Nah, but you can bet he’ll shove his way to the front of the line to collect any available storm-damage mitigation funds… whether or not he’s actually eligible.

If it wasn’t for Betty Cracker and various others I know down there, I’d be applauding the possibility of Drudge, Limbaugh, the orange fuckweasel and various other assholes getting their properties washed out to sea. As it is, one can only hope the damage is limited.

PEC threw those UPI/CVOTER polls into its big hopper of polls already, I think (they were listed on the front page). They didn’t do much to swing the topline number, since they’re fairly out of line with everything else.

The thing I noticed was that the survey period was really long, going back to about a week before the first debate. So it was actually data that was partly from the pneumonia/”Basket of Deplorables” period.

But UPI/CVOTER also has a recent tracking poll which is one of the only two currently showing Trump ahead, along with Rasmussen. They were the only polls among many in which Trump actually gained after the first debate.

@Mike J: actually beautiful sunny days precede most hurricanes because the storm sucks in all the available moisture which we call clouds so there is usually this big ring of clear weather all around the storm. It’s really odd while you are running around the yard getting stuff put up and knowing time is running out….the weather is perfect. Also depends how many miles across the storm is. Some are big some small, that isn’t correlated to how strong they are.
This time it’s been cloudy, drizzly since late yesterday and it’s not supposed to be here till tomorrow. Most of my others though have had great weather first. Hurricanes are weird.

Jeez Louise! How dumb are these guys? Everything is a freaking conspiracy with these know nothings. They are dragging your country down. Period. Full stop.
I should know better than to say/believe something like that, but really, if they have their say, and real policies are shaped to ensure their fee fees aren’t hurt or their input is included, you will accomplish almost nothing in dealing with the big issues that face your country. These yahoos need to be told this [as often as it takes for them to understand] and then left aside while the adults do the work.
Sec., I mean President Clinton needs a big win with a Dem Senate to get something done.
Keep working guys, you are almost there.

If this NH townhall was supposed to be debate scrimmage, not serving him well. Pop warner debate team would ask tougher questions.

    @Roger Moore:

What are the odds that Trump uses the storm hitting Mar-a-Lago as an excuse to flake on the debate?

I would love to see that happen. The ads write themselves: do you want a president who looks after his own first and the country second?

    Depends on why.
Seriously injured or killed family would be a very good reason to skip *a* debate. The Commission would most likely be happy to reschedule.
Skipping because of damage to his vacation home/private club Mar-a-Lago? Bad, bad optics and the ads do indeed write themselves.

@srv: LOL. From the “poll” you reference.

Because the poll is conducted online and individuals self-select to participate, a margin of error cannot be calculated.

The author claims that Trump is up in all the swing states. This is what passes for “fact” and “reason” in srv’s right wing world.

It just proves that wingers also believe the conjured hurricane story.

    @BillinGlendaleCA:

I often wondered about the flag pin that Republicans wear, it’s a flag with a elephant on the red and white bars.

Putting the elephant in front of the flag makes it an unintentionally perfect symbol for “party before country!”

Not only are they putting their party’s elephant before the American Flag, Elephants are not American animals. Donkeys, mules and horses are as American as it gets. Elephants are AFRICAN and South ASIAN, where the darker complected people live.

How can all these Second Amendment Coustitutionalist Americans be so deluded by a Party that kowtows to Russian Tsar Vladimir Vladimerovitch Putin, and worships a foreign animal as it’s core symbol>???\\

    Amazeballs.

And where is Rush Limbaugher spending the night tonight? In West Palm Beach, where his ostentatious mansion is, or points North, West and away from that spinning Hurricane??? Where is Drudge tonight? At home in Florida, or away partying in NYC??

I guess the footage of total devastation in Haiti is just from an elaborate Hollywood sound stage…

Maybe it won’t be a direct hit this time or as bad as they’re saying, in FL – the storm track forecasts are never perfect. It obviously has been a very destructive storm to areas directly in its path though…unless, of course, you don’t believe the footage from the places that have been through the bullseye.
