Balloon Juice

Come for the politics, stay for the snark.

The willow is too close to the house.

A democracy can’t function when people can’t distinguish facts from lies.

Damn right I heard that as a threat.

If senate republicans had any shame, they’d die of it.

Some judge needs to shut this circus down soon.

🎶 Those boots were made for mockin’ 🎵

Despite his magical powers, I don’t think Trump is thinking this through, to be honest.

We are aware of all internet traditions.

Is it negotiation when the other party actually wants to shoot the hostage?

Nancy smash is sick of your bullshit.

The truth is, these are not very bright guys, and things got out of hand.

Do not shrug your shoulders and accept the normalization of untruths.

I did not have telepathic declassification on my 2022 bingo card.

It may be funny to you motherfucker, but it’s not funny to me.

Reality always lies in wait for … Democrats.

Accountability, motherfuckers.

Proof that we need a blogger ethics panel.

If you tweet it in all caps, that makes it true!

I’d like to think you all would remain faithful to me if i ever tried to have some of you killed.

I was promised a recession.

Let us savor the impending downfall of lawless scoundrels who richly deserve the trouble barreling their way.

An almost top 10,000 blog!

We cannot abandon the truth and remain a free nation.

Since when do we limit our critiques to things we could do better ourselves?

New Clinton campaign ad warns of Trump controlling US nuclear arsenal, feat. a former nuclear missile launch officer https://t.co/Y76bD25vWW

— Jeremy Diamond (@JDiamond1) October 7, 2016

For sure, that tape is excellent low-brow entertainment, but let’s be honest: All of us, including Trump’s ‘evangelical’ fans, already knew he was a groper and a locker-room braggart. It’s baked into the vote already – his supporters love this stuff, because it’s the kind of crap they fantasize about doing themselves if only they had the power.

Given his age and lousy physical condition, talking filth in front of his fellow pigboys is probably as much as Trump’s capable of these days (there’s a reason those ViagCialis commercials all include a line about ‘be sure your doctor says your heart is strong enough for sexual activity’). I grew up having nightmares about Alas Babylon and Shadow on the Hearth; what I’m really afraid of is a President Trump who “impulsively” precipitates a nuclear incident because he can’t resist the urge to show off his virility by dissing some equally touchy foreign leader.

***********

Apart from depressing scenarios, what’s on the agenda for the start of the weekend?

Okay, my Disneyworld trip next spring may be back on — the Devil Woman has a beef with my brother and SIL out here in CA (long story) and wants reassurance that they will not be coming on the trip. So now I have to disinvite my CA SIL, but I can live with that. She can go another time.

I hope not a lot of men talk like that, because this is all very disheartening, and just sad. I’m increasingly getting overwhelmed by the racism, misogyny and just the sheer awful vulgarity of Trump and his campaign.

@Betty Cracker: He’ll back out of the 2 debates. His own kids will get him to back out. He can’t be asked about this in a POTUS debate. He’s not done yet, but if he shows up to the debate on Sunday, he’s over the second he gets asked about this. There is no positive outcome for him on this. If he bails, he can make through to the election. If he doesn’t, his campaign will be over Sunday night. Tomorrow should be fun.

What you say is true; but when I pointed this out on another site, a troll jumped out and accused me of calling Trump’s people “deplorables”. In other words, the new talkingpoint is that Trump himself may be deplorable, but his people are not. This is incoherent, possibly making sense only as a marker for next time: but then who will the candidate be?

I agree. Clinton was the odds-on favorite to win anyway, with this she’s in the catbird seat. We’ve probably won the Senate and the odds of taking the House just went up by a bunch as loosely attached GOP voters decide to sit this one out.

OK, I have a confession to make. Back when Trump was first nominated (I don’t remember the exact time frame) there was a “hacked opposition report on Trump” posted, purportedly snagged from some Clinton campaign person. I read it and I remember thinking how feeble it was. “Surely there has got to be more than this? It’s impossible to imagine a candidate with as many weak points as Trump, save perhaps if Fatty Arbuckle had run for POTUS, and they came up with this thin gruel? We’re doomed! I’m moving back across the border before Canada builds a wall and it’s too late.”

It did occur to me for a moment that it might be a bit of disinformation, but I thought that would be too clever by half. I clearly owe some clever campaign trickster a sincere apology.

    @rk:

FWIW, I have 4 older brothers and have worked in a lot of male-dominated workplaces where guys said things without realizing I was there. Saying appreciative things about womens’ physical attributes and talking about sex is pretty common, but this rapey shit is VERY unusual.

There’s a difference between saying you’d like to have sex with someone and saying you’d like to sexually assault them. Most men know what that line is, even in all-male company, but Donald clearly does not.

I’m a huge debate fan, can’t wait to see Donny blow it, which we all KNOW he will. The guy does not have the intellectual or emotional chops to do it. At work I listen to old Hitchens debates, I recently went back to Biden’s debates and he’s more impressive on TV than on audio only. Hillary compares very favorably to contemporary debate baddasses, imo.

I recently saw some fool on here post that Hillary was worse than Dukakis, McGovern, etc, but she’s better than them when it comes to debating. Better than John Kerry’s lame performances & never had a weak “Obama vs Romney Round 1”.

    Saw that.

The Obama Coalition is a winning coalition and Clinton has improved upon it by adding more women. Plus the Bernie voters have pretty much come home and the rest will … except for those who were never going to vote for her anyway. Further, my guess is Clinton got the lion’s share of the voters who are just now tuning into the election and that’s what the campaigns are seeing.

Just had a lovely dinner with hubby. Lamb kabobs, broccoli with sauteed shallots, rice cooked with chicken broth, a lovely cotes du rhone. Made another apple cake with caramel sauce (search Epicurious) it’s fabulous for an afternoon do tomorrow. The new front door got painted today and looks lovely. Younger daughter is home for the weekend although we won’t see much of her since she’ll spend most of it with the boyfriend, but we’ll see her for dinner on Sunday. Spending the evening switching between the Nats game and various cable shows watching the Trump meltdown. Good times.

Oh come ON, Anne Laurie, you’re overreacting –

Trump would never do anything so silly as precipitate a nucular war. Look, with the triumvirate of Mitch McConnell, Paul Ryan, and General Flynn exerting their strong moral authority, they would NEVER let Trump do anything like that.

Well, not after the first time, that is.

I’m smiling to myself, not only because this is Trump’s death-knell. This is the nail in the coffin for the Fundigelicals. Most liberals knew these mealy-mouthed sacks of piety were full of shit; through supporting Trump, these hypocrites have given us a decade’s worth (if not more) of ammunition.

I can’t wait to aim the cannons. I do hope the Democrats running for election load up on this story, and fire at will through every medium they can find. TV, YouTube, banners flown from little airplanes, chalk scribbles on warehouses. Just do it.
