Balloon Juice

Come for the politics, stay for the snark.

GOP baffled that ‘we don’t care if you die’ is not a winning slogan.

The gop is a fucking disgrace.

Peak wingnut was a lie.

… pundit janitors mopping up after the gop

People really shouldn’t expect the government to help after they watched the GOP drown it in a bathtub.

Nothing worth doing is easy.

Republicans are radicals, not conservatives.

So it was an October Surprise A Day, like an Advent calendar but for crime.

Good lord, these people are nuts.

When you’re a Republican, they let you do it.

Anne Laurie is a fucking hero in so many ways. ~ Betty Cracker

Fight them, without becoming them!

Teach a man to fish, and he’ll sit in a boat all day drinking beer.

Let me eat cake. The rest of you could stand to lose some weight, frankly.

Everything is totally normal and fine!!!

“Facilitate” is an active verb, not a weasel word.

Never entrust democracy to any process that requires republicans to act in good faith.

I would try pessimism, but it probably wouldn’t work.

Everybody saw this coming.

Something needs to be done about our bogus SCOTUS.

They punch you in the face and then start crying because their fist hurts.

But frankly mr. cole, I’ll be happier when you get back to telling us to go fuck ourselves.

It’s easy to sit in safety and prescribe what other people should be doing.

A democracy can’t function when people can’t distinguish facts from lies.

I hear a lot of people (men) saying they have never heard talk like this from Trump in their lives. I don’t recall ever hearing anyone saying it’s ok to assault women, but I have heard highly sexualized talk like this before. Not the “grab em by the pussy” or shit like that, but the usual “I’d love to blah blah blah” and stuff where you basically treat a woman as an anatomical part and not a person. But it was when I was 17-25, and in the Army in a tank with three other guys, or while hammered and pledging a fraternity, or on the lacrosse team.

But then I grew up. Hell, a few years ago when I was still the Grand Chapter Advisor for the fraternity, during homecoming, an alum from the 80’s started to sing an old song, while drunk, that was particularly demeaning and vulgar, and I stopped it. I told him that we don’t engage in that kind of talk and thinking anymore. We wouldn’t allow this in our fraternity. We changed a lot of things, first and foremost was that you treat women like human beings.

And here is a man who wants to be President, months after marrying his third wife in his 60’s, after divorcing the second wife who he had a well publicized affair with while married to his first wife, talking like a sociopath and rapist. The man is sick.

Hi John. I am part of the club too (secret hetero boor handhake here). I don’t travel in Trump level power circles, and I don’t know how the rich sociopathic set talks. But the idea that this is standard male boor banter is nonsense. I’ve worked with jackass male sexists, some pretty grabby. Never heard anything like that. Trump is basically bragging that he can assault women because he is rich and famous. When a powerful person talks like that it sets off alarm bells, whether it is using power to administratively assault employees to steal their time or money or dignity, or push weaker people around, or anything. More so when it concerns physical assault on a human being. Ain’t normal. I can’t remember hearing anyone talk like that, even at the hetero boor monthly club meetings.

CNN is all over this. Personally, I had no idea this would go viral, because I found his comments about the Central Park five worse. This is the guy who talked about the size of his pe.nis so what do they expect. He’s a racist pig and always has been one. My son was over earlier and listened to the tape. His comment was uhoh, he’s trying to say Clinton did it too. He was put on notice at an early age, that was not an acceptable excuse.

David Letterman on Trump: “if you see somebody who’s not behaving like any other human you’ve known, that means something. They need an appointment with a psychiatrist. They need a diagnosis and they need a prescription.”

A Trump supporter tried to give Kurt Eichenwald an epileptic seizure for simply doing his job

A couple of weeks later, after my article about how Trump’s business interests would create a conflict of unprecedented proportions, I received a tweet from someone with the twitter handle “Mike’s Deplorable AF.” Like many Trump supporters, he has chosen to identify himself as deplorable to mock the label once used by Clinton to describe the racists, neo-Nazis, homophobes and like who have crawled out of the sewer to cheer for the Republican nominee. Mike, however, is indeed deplorable.

In his tweet, which has since been deleted, Mike made mention of my seizures and included a small video. It contained images of Pepe the Frog, a cartoon character that has been identified by the Anti-Defamation League as a hate symbol. I was carrying my iPad, looking at the still image on the video and, without thinking, touched the PLAY button.

The video was some sort of strobe light, with flashing circles and images of Pepe flying toward the screen. It’s what’s called epileptogenic—something that triggers seizures. Fortunately, since I was standing, I simply dropped my iPad to the ground the second I realized what Mike had done. It landed face down on the bathroom floor.

The deplorables are real. The deplorables are dangerous.

The tape underscores something about Donald Trump that I imagine causes him much frustration: he will always be a striver from Queens.

One of those deep profiles said that back in the Studio 54 days, Trump liked to be photographed with models, but as often as not went home to sit up watching TV with a bag of candy. Like a lot of the frat boys and lacrosse players you mention, Trump wants to sound like a ladies man, but he doesn’t know how to brag about it.

In my experience men, even in high school, don’t talk this way, not in the locker room, and not even when in the private company of close friends or relatives. Trump was almost sixty when he made these comments, and was not in a private setting at all, and knew he was being recorded.

While some men do say that they would like to do such and such with so and so’s etc, they don’t say that they actually do do it, and certainly not in this way. As Cole says…”I’d love to…” NOT “I do…” Fantasizing about what they would love to do (even if that WOULD amount to a crime because there is no talk of consent), is not the same thing as stating that they actually do it. Trump is, as has been pointed out, basically bragging about committing sexual assault. That he goes up to women, in a cold call type situation, and just grabs them in their crotches. And that he gets away with it. Not a fantasy, but a brag.

That is not something to brag about, not even in the locker room.

What some men do brag about is more like that women want to or do grab their crotches, or that women guide their (the man’s) hand to their own (the woman’s) crotches. Being attractive to women, and “scoring,” if you will, on a purely consensual basis, is what some men brag about. That women love them. And come on to them. That they are like Don Draper or Mick Jagger. And so on.

And, of course, that is only some men. Most men don’t say any of this at all.

It’s not just the House guys. Mike Pence had the press pool booted from the restaurant he was dining in when this broke. He’s even less interested in discussing Trump than he was on Tuesday night.

I read that if Trump had another poor debate performance Sunday night, the GOP would give him the Dole in 1996 treatment and cut him loose. That may be moved up now.

As a dude in my 30s who played sports in high school and went to the gym occasionally in college, I can certainly attest that some men say offensive and objectifying stuff about women as freely as they draw breath when they’re in “just the boys” settings like the locker room or drinking themselves stupid together.

I can also say I never did, even in my late teen/early 20s years. I wouldn’t call myself an unusually empathetic or sensitive person, but even my stupid teeanger ass was self-aware enough to know that I wouldn’t want other people saying shit like that to or about me. So I didn’t.

Trump’s banter in the tape is worse than most of what I ever heard, though. As Cole said, he’s basically bragging about his ability to commit sexual assault without consequence. That is particularly indecent even by the standards of crude teenage horndog boys.

And yet, as I said in the last thread, I’m not at all surprised Trump would say shit like that, and I find it pathetic that THIS appears to be the thing that finally pushed the media too far. Not the hundreds of other atrocities to the English language he’s committed or the braindead hate he’s aroused or the unAmerican horseshit he’s proposed as “policy.” None of that was too much for them. But this is? Egads.

In the 1980’s I worked in Manhattan and had a job where i oversaw work on construction sites in high rises. I think I have worked in all the Trump properties, and all the major buildings. It was common for the tradesmen to bring in boom boxes and everyone listened to Howard Stern and talked about the show endlessly into the afternoon. Politico has a decent article about that time up on their site now. Not only was it common to hear language like that, most men deeply pondered and considered women in this way. They were kind of proud of it. Harassment when you walked the street, when you went in the office, the language, the grabbing simply was not unusual. That’s why I believed Anita Hill immediately, I heard that talk verbatim everyday. Not at all surprised Trump speaks this way, just amazing that he never grew out of it. He turned it into a career. Although there are still challenges for women in the workplace I cannot believe how different it is today.

@Keith G: Right. It can’t be done. And the base is still sticking with Trump. They try to shove him out, they will go into full blown angry mob with pitchforks and torches mode.

Apparently since Reince Priebus’s statement, there’s been a flood of comments from Republicans in tough reelection fights condemning Trump, followed by nothing. As Josh Marshall pointed out, that smells of a hasty but coordinated strategy. Bluntly speaking, “Condemn him, then go to ground.”

Question is, what will Paul Ryan do tomorrow? Or Scott Walker for that matter? (Ron Johnson is fucked anyway, so what does he have to lose?)

@the Conster, la Citoyenne: Actually, a lot of the oppo research was just looking at stuff that was public and known, if half forgotten. Best example is foreign policy. Trump has been dementedly talking about foreign policy like its a protection racket for years, on talk shows, when he was trying out in politics as a conservative Democrat. Trump’s offhand statement that he hadn’t given it much thought but invading Iraq sounds like a good idea: Howard Stern show. He enthusiastically advocated intervention in Syria and said Obama was a dummy for waiting so long on some kind of ‘ask The Donald Feature’ on social media. His enthusiastic endorsement of quick Iraq withdrawal: public interview.

Opposition ‘research’ has never been so easy, and so needed, and so neglected by his goofy GOP opponents or the media during the primaries.

What Donald described liking to do to women is a class A misdemeanor under New York Law:

New York Penal Law § 130.52 Forcible touching

A person is guilty of forcible touching when such person
intentionally, and for no legitimate purpose, forcibly touches the
sexual or other intimate parts of another person for the purpose of
degrading or abusing such person;  or for the purpose of gratifying the
    actor’s sexual desire.

For the purposes of this section, forcible touching includes squeezing, grabbing or pinching.

Forcible touching is a class A misdemeanor.

    @Keith G:

The accident aside, aren’t the ballots formalized (a state issue and not a RNC issue)? Remember the great Micheal Bloomberg brushfire?

You’re voting for pledged electors, not a President. The electors are under the instructions of the state party, the party can theoretically tell the electors to vote for someone else but if everyone is still alive and contesting the election in December, the electors pretty much have to vote their pledge.

In the case of some kind of bizarre irregularity, though, this is where the wiggle room is. Some states make it a crime for an elector to vote against their nominal pledge but I doubt it’d be enforced on a Trump elector if Trump pulled out of his own accord and nominated his replacement, or a candidate had some sort of incapacitating accident.

I do know this: in the 2002 Minnesota senate race, Paul Wellstone died after the ballots had been printed, and he was on the ballot that election, though it was understood that people were voting for Walter Mondale, who had succeeded Wellstone in the campaign. I don’t know if Mondale’s victory would have been de jure by the election, or if Wellstone would have won and there was a legislative agreement to appoint Mondale to his term. In any event Mondale lost to Norm Phuquing Coleman.

It is after midnight and Kennedy and Dodd are just finishing up a long dinner in a private room on the first floor of the restaurant’s annex. They are drunk. Their dates, two very young blondes, leave the table to go to the bathroom. (The dates are drunk too. “They’d always get their girls very, very drunk,” says a former Brasserie waitress.) Betty Loh, who served the foursome, also leaves the room. Raymond Campet, the co-owner of La Brasserie, tells [waitress Carla] Gaviglio the senators want to see her.

As Gaviglio enters the room, the six-foot-two, 225-plus-pound Kennedy grabs the five-foot-three, 103-pound waitress and throws her on the table. She lands on her back, scattering crystal, plates and cutlery and the lit candles. Several glasses and a crystal candlestick are broken. Kennedy then picks her up from the table and throws her on Dodd, who is sprawled in a chair. With Gaviglio on Dodd’s lap, Kennedy jumps on top and begins rubbing his genital area against hers, supporting his weight on the arms of the chair. As he is doing this, Loh enters the room. She and Gaviglio both scream, drawing one or two dishwashers. Startled, Kennedy leaps up. He laughs. Bruised, shaken and angry over what she considered a sexual assault, Gaviglio runs from the room. Kennedy, Dodd and their dates leave shortly thereafter, following a friendly argument between the senators over the check.

I expect the leadership, such as it is, of the Republican party to further pull away from Trump. Mike Pence must be paralyzed; he is so screwed. No matter what, he comes out of this looking like a hypocrite or a complete fool. I am not sure his evangelical base will forgive him. A number of people have suggested that there is more to come. I hope so. I phone banked for Hillary today, calling Illinois, and spoke to one woman in her 60s who was truly undecided. She was praying about it, she told me. I hope, when she sees/reads today’s stories, the story about the CP5, the story about conversation with Billy Bush, she will at least make the decision not to vote for Trump. I suspect there are more people out there like her, still struggling with the decision. Anything that moves them away from Trump is good.

    @gf120581:

It’s pretty amazing that Mitt Romney has shown more integrity and common decency in always opposing Trump while Huntsman actually supported him.

Maybe if Mitt had shown a bit of integrity when he was running for president and Trump endorsed him, I’d have some respect for him. Instead, Romney gave a simpering speech about how great Trump was. Also, Romney had a chance to state forthrightly that calling into question Obama’s birthplace and citizenship was disgraceful and racist, instead of getting cute with the “I don’t question his birthplace, it’s his foreign ideas that bother me” and “Obama has a very strange and in some respects foreign to the American experience type of philosophy.” and “Nobody has ever asked to see my birth certificate – I was born right over there” [Not exact quotes, just approximate].

Romney presumably saw Trump for what he was, and he figured he could use Trump’s sleazy birtherism and his donations and his attention, while pretending not to go along with the worst of it.

Now that Romney has nothing to lose from opposing Trump, and nothing to gain from tapping into Trump-ism, he is suddenly shocked, shocked that this disagreeable man is getting an audience.

The scandalous stuff from wikileaks, Hillary saying that Wall Street is best positioned to help reform Wall St., she says she’s going to need big donations from NY, including Wall St., says she was raised middle class, but is now far removed from that life now. Apparently this would have been damming during the the primary. She supposedly says Bernies supporters buckets of losers, and she calls for a free and open common market. And acknowledges that people are trying to hack the State Dept. Calls for open borders and single payer.
A couple of things don’t make sense, she stopped giving speeches before Bernie entered the race, so why would she be trashing his supporters before he got in and was a threat to her. And how do you establish a common market across the world.
So now they are into conspiracy stuff, the Trump tape was leaked to cover for this. One panelist says that Hillary with Bill’s women is worse than Trump. The democratic token says it may be fake from wiki and Putin.

One week after explaining why he planned to vote for Donald Trump, former Utah Gov. Jon Huntsman said it is time for the Republican nominee to drop out of the race and allow vice presidential nominee Mike Pence to represent the party.

His reversal came in reaction to an explosive video that emerged Friday showing Trump bragging about groping and kissing women.

“In a campaign cycle that has been nothing but a race to the bottom — at such a critical moment for our nation — and with so many who have tried to be respectful of a record primary vote, the time has come for Governor Pence to lead the ticket,” Huntsman told The Salt Lake Tribune.

I watched Scottie Nell Hughes very angrily (at the media, not Trump) try to claim that this isn’t bad because at the time, Trump was a private citizen and hadn’t yet run for president. I was a bit surprised that nobody on the panel cared to mention that he ran to be the Reform Party nominee in 2000. So that excuse kind of falls flat with me (not to mention Corey Lewandowski trying to use “he speaks from the heart” as a positive…at least here, someone retorted “well, then he has a soulless, dark heart!”)
For more amusement, I kept flipping over to Fox (Hume and O’Reilly). Out of about 10-20 times of checking Fox News, every time, the chyron was about the Clinton email release. It was pretty amazing. I don’t think they realize that this story is too big for them to ignore, and it makes them look even less impartial than people already do. I mean, Trump field offices are flipping out. It’s a huge, gigantic shitburger, and Fox News is going all Guy Fieri on the thing, cramming it into their face and praising it for how juicy and flavorful it is.

EDIT: And Farenthold has to be a lock for a Pulitzer, right? He’s done more to bring down Trump that anyone AFAIK, and it ain’t even close.

The only difference between them and Trump is slightly more polite language. It’s no wonder that he doesn’t want to be forced into commenting right now. @raven: What a horrible statement.

“I am sickened by what I heard today. Women are to be championed and revered, not objectified,” Ryan said in a statement.

As others have said, this is patronizing, demeaning, and disingenuous.

You’re not the victim here, Paul. This isn’t about your feelings.

“I hope Mr. Trump treats this situation with the seriousness it deserves and works to demonstrate to the country that he has greater respect for women than this clip suggests. In the meantime, he is no longer attending tomorrow’s event in Wisconsin.”

What “situation” is this exactly, Paul? What “seriousness” does it deserve exactly, Paul? The fact that we heard what he really thinks, and how he really acts toward other people? And how he brags about it? And how he wants to be congratulated about it? And how he calls a woman “It”?

How exactly can he “demonstrate” his “greater respect” for women than his words and confessed actions?

This weaselly, mealy-mouthed statement is a perfect reflection of what’s wrong with Ryan and the GOP. The demonstrated imbecility, horribleness, and incompetence of Trump shows how dangerous he would be as a leader. It’s easy to see the damage he would do to all of us. But Ryan and the GOP doesn’t care about that. They don’t care about the people and the country and the government. It’s all a power game to them.

“Donnie, you have to apologize and pretend you’re actually a normal human being who has empathy for others!! If you don’t, we’ll lose power!! In the meantime, go to your room and have a timeout!!1”

    :-/

It’s disgusting, but not surprising. I just hope enough voters realize what’s going on and vote them out. Things aren’t going to change until they lose political power.

    Cheers,

I don’t give a shit whether his dick is small or big and whether he gets laid or not. He said what he said and that’s what matters.

But please, Paul Ryan . . . fuck off with your reverence.

@Uncle Cosmo: There are several. The simplest is injected KCl. It leaves traces though (needle mark, and high potassium levels).

or while hammered and pledging a fraternity

When I was in graduate school in the 1970s, much of my support came from a part-time job at the Waffle House, a job blessed by the fact that a family ran the place and understood the value of treating employees right. Of course there were always the customers you dreaded waiting on:

    — the drunks.

    — the lechers.

    — the people who brought young children, let them run wild and left the table looking like a tornado hit it.

    — the fussy customers who left 25-cent tips

    — the rednecks who quarreled loudly and not only brought guns into the place but left them on the table.

I would have sooner spent my entire 10-hour shift waiting exclusively on the above-listed customers than wait on one table of frat boys even once.

But I do understand that we all have murky things in our pasts.

    That is all.
