According to our hosting provider, Hosting Matters, Matthew will pass through their area (Jacksonville) mid-afternoon. They’re prepared, but I wouldn’t be surprised if we had downtime.

Watching this from London and hoping all in Matthew’s path stay safe.

It’s not so bad so far. My trashcan blew over.
ETA about 15 miles inland. Today will be the messy day for us.
Poopyman
According to WindyTV, it’s currently off the coast at Merritt Island, with 53 kt winds on the beach.

Word from my sister is that the eye swung out to sea and they (my BIL; rest of family evacuated) are getting tropical storm conditions and flooding, no worse.
Face
And here I thought you were going to opine on the U of Miami’s passing attack.

@Face: St Mark may deliver!

@Poopyman: thanks for that link to Windy TV, never saw that before. It is awesome.

Today’s clearly not the day to go to Jimmy Hula’s in Jax for fish tacos.

Weather Channel just announced a storm death in St. Lucie. Details forthcoming, I’m sure.

The trees are lashing and it’s rather nice to be in a house. Poor squirrels

@LurkerExtraordinaire: A lady had a heart attack and the responders couldn’t get there in time. The weather channel has been awful but I can’t get too upset with the fear mongering because a lot of people still don’t take evacuation orders seriously (and they absolutely should).
LurkerExtraordinaire
@Pinacacci: Right. Here’s a link to the story: http://www.tcpalm.com/story/weather/hurricanes/2016/10/07/storm-related-death-reported-st-lucie-county/91720500/

Skeletor may want to rethink his decision to not extend voting registration, depending on voting demographics between JAX and Pompano Beach. He thought he was brilliant when it was looking like a West Palm landfall…
Face
@Pinacacci: TPM has an article up about how Gov. Scott is refusing to extend voter reg deadlines. No wonder some people wont evacuate, if it precludes them from being able to vote.
Ive rarely seen a more partisan move than refusing to extend registration dates despite a Cat4 in your backyard.
Starfish
@Face: no one is that dedicated to voting

According to the map, Matthew has wobbled to the west and Daytona is getting slammed. J’ville is gonna get it, too.

@MomSense: And Hilton Head and Charleston, then swing around and come back for another bite at the Florida apple…

@Botsplainer: As I understand it, the request had more to do with the cancellation of last chance voter registration drives over the weekend. Those most likely won’t be renewed in time for the deadline, not to mention a lot of people left town and now need to get back. But that’s still a lot better than what might have happened.

I want a miracle hurricane that devastates only the reddest districts of Red States, on Election Day.

Related, Slate has some dreadful fearbait article about how the hurricane might! absolutely! turn this into another Florida 2000! It’s a dreadful, absolutely phoned-in old-timey slatepitch. Sad.

@Steve in the ATL:
HA!
@Mustang Bobby:
Maybe God is pissed that all the Christians have been ignoring the gospel according to this hurricane’s namesake and is reminding them about that we are supposed to help each other.
Obviously I don’t think God has anything to do with it but I’m tempted to tell my Trump voting Christianist former friends who live in Florida that this is the message.

Most everyone of us evacuated Amelia Island yesterday. I fear for the few diehards who remained. They may do exactly that. I hope the Hurricane Center’s new storm surge model is over-predicting. If the model is right we are not expecting to have much to go home to once this blows past. This is going to be a tough few weeks, maybe months.

If the hurricane wasn’t enough a WAPO article on the damage President Trump can do and how little the Congress can do to stop him, even if the old granny starver Ryan and Yrtle wanted to

So Loretta Sanchez dabbed at the debate with Kamala Harris last night. Please, polls, stop trying to draw the youth vote this way. It was cringy when Hillary didn’t and Sanchez looks worse.
Though maybe she’s hoping the yutes don’t remember this gem.

@Florida Frog: The one time I was at Amelia Island (for the Concours in 2015, nose pressed against the glass), I was impressed with all of the beautiful trees. I hope they survive.

@Florida Frog:
I was just on Amelia Island this spring – had drinks and lunch at the Omni – loved it! I can’t imagine how they don’t get hammered. Nothing appeared to be on ground above sea level.
Florida Frog
@Mustang Bobby: @Mustang Bobby: They are gorgeous. I give a talk from time to time at the History Museum and such places about the mechanics of live oaks and how they are our best protection from storms. Live oaks are so beautifully adapted to storm stress. Their center of mass is so low that they are very difficult to overturn. Of course if the soil is completely saturated, even they are vulnerable. Most of the live oaks in New Orleans survived Katrina. I hope most of ours do as well.

@Amir Khalid:
Fixt. But I’m a cynic: “You think that’s good? You should hear their self-produced reel-to-reel! Dude, home-made guitar amp and you can hear car traffic in the background. It’s AWESOME…”

@the Conster, la Citoyenne: Not so, Conster. We have a hill in the center of the island that is nearly at El 20 feet. Seriously though, most of us are in big trouble. Its such a beautiful place and I dread going back to see what’s left.

@Florida Frog: We have a lot of live oaks down here in Miami. I love them, especially for their habit of shedding their leaves in the spring for the new growth. It’s like a renewal.

@Florida Frog: My uncle had one of those block beach houses nestled behind the dunes south of Fernandina in the sixties. It has always been my model of what life at the beach should be. One year a storm came and took one of the two dune lines away. Mother Nature wins when she wants to. Hope you find yourselves ok when you return.

As predicted by Drudge, It appears that the worst of the Hurricane will miss the mainland so the dire predictions didn’t happen. So clearly it’s a libruuul conspiracy or whatever horseshit they have been trying to peddle.

Why pick Jacksonville for hosting? Not exactly a hosting mecca and their pricing doesn’t look like anything special.

Checking in from Pompano Beach. It is an overcast, blustery day but nothing unusual. The neighbors to the west of us lost power yesterday. Don’t know if/when it will be restored. It was dramatic hearing the gunshot loud explosions and watching the sparks shower around the power pole. No one was hurt but it was impressive.
My daughter lives in Casselberry (NW Orlando area) and they’ve lost power already. Here’s hoping it gets restored quickly. They have a little water seeping under the front door and garage door but so far (knock on wood) this is the worst of it for them.
