Balloon Juice

Come for the politics, stay for the snark.

The real work of an opposition party is to hold the people in power accountable.

People are weird.

Why is it so hard for them to condemn hate?

Republicans cannot even be trusted with their own money.

President Musk and Trump are both poorly raised, coddled 8 year old boys.

Mediocre white men think RFK Jr’s pathetic midlife crisis is inspirational. The bar is set so low for them, it’s subterranean.

People are complicated. Love is not.

Imperialist aggressors must be defeated, or the whole world loses.

We know you aren’t a Democrat but since you seem confused let me help you.

We will not go back.

If ‘weird’ was the finish line, they ran through the tape and kept running.

Following reporting rules is only for the little people, apparently.

When do we start airlifting the women and children out of Texas?

People really shouldn’t expect the government to help after they watched the GOP drown it in a bathtub.

“woke” is the new caravan.

You come for women, you’re gonna get your ass kicked.

Dumb motherfuckers cannot understand a consequence that most 4 year olds have fully sorted out.

Republicans do not pay their debts.

They punch you in the face and then start crying because their fist hurts.

The current Supreme Court is a dangerous, rogue court.

Fuck these fucking interesting times.

The rest of the comments were smacking Boebert like she was a piñata.

Historically it was a little unusual for the president to be an incoherent babbling moron.

Nancy smash is sick of your bullshit.

To the surprise of no one who has been watching these frauds for the last two decades as I have, many evangelicals are sticking with Trump, and David Brody is spinning himself into knots, lashing out at teh liberals, and what not:

Ralph Reed was practically humping Trump’s leg this morning on NPR and offering his daughters as a sacrifice so the unborns could have a vote. Something about it being 10 years ago and the Trump of today is nothing like this.

That next October surprise? It’s going to be from two weeks ago, so all those who wrapped themselves up in, “past Trump, not current Trump” will have nowhere to run, no where to hide.

I guess the most telling piece about all of this is that we have Bill Clinton, noted horndog and skirt chaser, who most assuredly scored a few intimate sessions outside the bonds of marriage. Yet, also from the documentation, it appears that Bill’s advances were apparently made with women who had given him the inclination that they would be receptive to said advances.

Not condoning what he did, but most of the evidence appears to point to consensual conjugation (so to speak)

Whereas, we have a multi-thousandaire, who is confiding to a guy who peddles in gossip on a national stage that he has a penchant for going up and scoring with women because he finds them attractive and simply takes control and imposes himself on them.

perhaps the nuance here is too great for these folks to see.. then again, it appears that a good many of these upright and moral christianists have never spent a lot of time over in that New Testament part of their favored tome, so perhaps nuance isn’t their forte.

They same to have the same issues about support of a fetus versus the support of a child.

    October 8, 2016 at 4:19 pm

A couple of months ago I read a disturbing, beautifully written account in the New Yorker called The Crotchgrabber. The author, Mary Karr, describes being suddenly assaulted in the Trump manner by a passerby.

Shame hit, a cold backwash of elemental shame: something bad had been done to me; therefore I was bad. Even though I knew better, I started scanning for how I’d incited this. Pedestrians glided past. A sandwich was being made. I took stock of what I had on: in some ways, I wish I had been wearing booty shorts and Lucite heels and prissing past the Port Authority Bus Terminal holding my décolletage in my hands and saying “hubba hubba.” I should be able to dress that way if the urge possesses me.

Instead, I was wearing a modest dress and platform slides with big cork soles to save the feet from pounding concrete. For an instant, the shoes looked radiantly slutty, the old-maid equivalent of dominatrix spikes. I was drenched in sweat, and part of me wanted to bolt the two blocks to my apartment, scramble up the stairs, double-latch the door, and crawl behind some heavy furniture. But inside all that noise in my head, some space bar got hit, and a moment of quiet opened up.

Encouraged by a homeless man sitting on a cardboard square, she yelled, gave chase, and found a cop. The grabber was cuffed and taken to jail, although ultimately charges were dropped. Sometimes I think it is easier for a man to imagine the harm done by devastating violent rapes like the one perpetrated against the Central Park Jogger (but not by the young men Trump was so quick to condemn) than the more common sexual assaults like that Kerr describes. Her story leaped to mind when I saw the Trump tape yesterday. One point that struck me on rereading is that the author is white, middle class, and well educated. Her only vulnerability was being female, and that was enough to draw the most personal and contemptuous attack casually from a large stranger. Reading her account puts more meat on the bare bones of the Trump account.

Seems to me the evangelicals have an easy rational for voting Trump. Before settling on Pence, one of the Trump spawn told Kasich that if he agreed to be Trump’s VP he’d be doing all the Presidenting. It’s not a bigly leap to think that Pence got the same sales pitch. So, a vote for Trump is really a vote for the right-wing, evangelical wet-dream, Pence. Although, I may be giving anyone even considering voting for Trump too much credit for logical thought.

It’s not even remotely comparable, but I remember when Perot withdrew from the 1992 race and then came back again. My boss at the time, a general contractor who had been a die-hard supporter, was devastated by the quitting and never got back on the bandwagon.

What gets me is the same that others (and I several times) have pointed out, Trump has been like this for decades. He isn’t changing, ever. It’s baked into his old tiresome ass. That’s what made Kasich marginally better than all the rest of them is that he saw what we saw and bailed early. It may kill his political life but that’s all the better for the rest of us. Pence can’t even get reelected for dog catcher it a remote rural town and it’s because he’s a proven idiot. A smooth idiot but an idiot none the less.

Nate has also said that a good predictor should take into account important events in the campaign, so that the wild swings he showed from the conventions, emailghazi, the debate, etc. are a sign that his system is working well.

I think that’s nonsense. Those are mostly temporary disruptions, and the polls have bounced back to the status quo after them. Reacting to them is a sign that his “predictor” is just following the current state of the campaign, not really predicting the final outcome. A really good predictor should be able to tell the difference between a temporary blip and a real shift.

But, I think I’m a little younger than you guys (no snark intended), and so I wasn’t paying quite as much attention to the Cabinet, etc., in those days.

Is it a case of you feeling McNamara was not even close to as bad as LBJ? Or is it more a matter of trying to keep the “list” to a manageable size?

Nixon sure was evil. That’s why I mentioned him in my answer to @SFAW: at #118. And LBJ wasn’t all bad. Does the good stuff outweigh the bad? I used to think so. But I’ve asked myself this before, would Nixon have gotten us into Vietnam (or where ever) if LBJ hadn’t? Or would Nixon had ever even been elected if it hadn’t been for Vietnam? Of course we will never know as that’s not how it worked out. LBJ did deeply involve us in Vietnam, Nixon did fuck over at least 2 nations and untold humans by his willingness to exploit the Vietnam disaster for his personal gain.
I look at LBJ this way, if in fact he got his legislation past because of Vietnam, he didn’t seem to try other options first. That’s my defining moment in Fuck LBJ. And for your sake I’ll add Fuck Nixon.
You, raven, myself and millions of others paid a price, some of us a quite high price for both of these presidents.
Right now I spend every day at the VA hospital and I see and talk to Vietnam era vets who have been broken for a long time. It’s not a pretty picture. I have also talked to some who are broken from our latest war adventures. So yes this is personal to me. Fuck LBJ. Fuck Nixon. And Fuck those republicans (and democrats) who want to cut the VA, SS, and all the other programs that at least attempt to make up for the horrible things many politicians do in our names but really with their own power and gain in mind.
