Balloon Juice

Come for the politics, stay for the snark.

Republican obstruction dressed up as bipartisanship. Again.

They are lying in pursuit of an agenda.

They traffic in fear. it is their only currency. if we are fearful, they are winning.

If you’re pissed about Biden’s speech, he was talking about you.

Nancy smash is sick of your bullshit.

Proof that we need a blogger ethics panel.

Give the craziest people you know everything they want and hope they don’t ask for more? Great plan.

Insiders who complain to politico: please report to the white house office of shut the fuck up.

Hot air and ill-informed banter

Not all heroes wear capes.

A thin legal pretext to veneer over their personal religious and political desires

This really is a full service blog.

“Jesus paying for the sins of everyone is an insult to those who paid for their own sins.”

Good lord, these people are nuts.

Usually wrong but never in doubt

Something needs to be done about our bogus SCOTUS.

If you are still in the GOP, you are an extremist.

The willow is too close to the house.

Seems like a complicated subject, have you tried yelling at it?

Speaking of republicans, is there a way for a political party to declare intellectual bankruptcy?

Just because you believe it, that doesn’t make it true.

Impressively dumb. Congratulations.

This has so much WTF written all over it that it is hard to comprehend.

This year has been the longest three days of putin’s life.

Tonight’s big take home

Trump lost his goddamned mind in this debate. Nobody in a western democracy threatens to jail their opponent on live TV. This guy wants to be Vladimir Putin. I literally cannot believe that reporters will talk about fine details of this or that exchange when an American candidate for President went gibbering insane in front of the country. Folks honestly need to contact your media outlets and complain every time someone acts like this is remotely normal behavior.

Also he said bragging about sexual assault was ok because ISIS is worse.

***Update***

A couple random thoughts.

(1) Two scientific polls said that she won the debate. That is a relief, because the Luntz focus group was honestly wigging me out a little. Then I remembered that he must have dug pretty deep to find a double digit number of people who haven’t decided and never heard about the grab-her-crotch tape.

(2) Reading Michael Steele’s twitter feed is a surreal experience. In the top ten or twenty tweets he fist bumps Ezra Klein about Trump kneecapping his own VP and retweets Sipp E. Cupp trashing Trump for his bassackwards claim that Iran, Assad and Russia are targeting ISIS. As doc Tam once said while gazing up at a statue, this must be what going crazy feels like.

And who was it on MSNBC who said, and I’m paraphrasing, Here we have two very unpopular candidates running for president. If she were debating any of many of the other 16 Republicans, she’d be losing.

Isn’t that what any loser says? If it were a different Republican, we’d be winning?? No, because you’re losing the contest against your only opponent.

well, for anyone that was truly on the fence, who was looking for someone who could articulate a policy aim and plan, its pretty obvious that its HRC. If you’re feeling like the country and everything else has left you insecure and less than awesome, then Trump rang your bell, because he’s offering up HRC as the person who will pay for the crimes committed against you. The question, same as it ever was, are there more of “us” or more of “them”.

On another note, I love how the media brings up that Clinton claims that there are these people that she calls “deplorable”, yet no one ever goes ahead and looks at the people she is hanging the label on. So Clinton allowed Trump to rally his base, but not win over moderates. How do downticket candidates handle this? They can even less afford to abandon Trump now. I’m guessing they work their way behind him again because they’ll see this as a reasonable performance, and we’re going to have another tape leak out which they’ll again have to answer for.

This feels like another setup to me. Trump stays at 40% in the polls and he drags down downtickets in the process.

    The bigger takeaways:
    1) Trump tried to deny bragging about sexual assault, despite it being on tape
    2) Trump tried to deny telling people to watch a sex tape, even though he clearly did
    3) Trump admitted not paying taxes, and refused to say for how many years
    4) Trump answered a question about protecting targets of Islamophobia by ramping up Islamophobia
    5) The people at 538 suck at punditry
    6) Jake Tapper and Chuck Todd continue to be douches

One thing this election has shown me, and admittedly this is something as a 31 year old I should have seen by now, is how incredibly authoritarian the right is. These people are not democratic, they’re aching for a dictator. They feel under attack from various others, they feel the walls closing in, and only a dear leader type can save them. They want power but in some weird, grotesque way that I’ve never seen with anything but the most fringe left wing types. It’s awful.

As with Romney’s 47%er thing, this was a thing on right wing blogs for years before a candidate for POTUS brought it up.

The catch-all response to any and all questions about sexism, rape, or any problems of that nature in the U.S. for years has been that Muslims are worse. And liberals are hypocrites because they always condemn sexist behavior from Christians hate Christians but don’t think it’s okay to profile every Muslim as a terrorist love Muslims so much.

I’m feeling very good about this, and believe it or not, the source of my optimism is Chuck Todd, a guy I normally detest. These are all things he said:

    1. He said he didn’t disagree with any of Carville’s longwinded partisan summary on behalf of Clinton (that was kind of a shocker).

    2. In what he said and what he merely hinted at, bombs will go off in the next 48 hours, which will be really, really bad for Trump.

    3. Trump gave the lunatic Clinton hunters of the 90s their wet dream (someone screaming at Hillary on national TV), but that won’t increase their total (which ain’t 50% of the vote).

    4. Trump has now made it impossible for GOP candidates in swing areas, who thought they had their escape ramp from Trump but now don’t (at least until #2 comes to fruition). That sounded a lot like Senate control to me.

    5. Even his criticism of Clinton (she passed on opportunities to attack) is something he said might be fixed by follow-up ads, fact checking, and the bombs from #2.

Chuckles does not share the opinions of our concern trolls. Neither do I.

I know many are disappointed that Trump’s final meltdown wasn’t tonight. Give it a week.

Trump campaign manager accuses congressmen of lewd behavior
Kellyanne Conway made the statements in response to congressional Republicans un-endorsing Trump this weekend.

Conway said after the second presidential debate that she took Donald Trump at his word when he said his remarks about women in a leaked hot-mic tape were just “locker room” talk and not confessions of actual sexual misconduct. But some members of Congress have acted lewdly in the past, Conway said on TV after the debate.

“I would talk to some of the members of Congress out there. I remember when I was younger and prettier, them rubbing up against girls sticking their tongues down women’s throats. It was true,” Conway told Chris Matthews during a post-debate interview on MSNBC.

“Some are on the list of people who won’t support Donald Trump because they ride around on a high horse,” Conway said.
Conway did not identify individual members of Congress she was discussing.

    1) political enemies will be subject to vendetta
    2) roe vs wade – gone
    3) we’ll bomb who we like, when we like

I have NEVER thought I would see the day when I would see a political debate where one candidate threatened another, in a public forum, with special prosecutor investigations to find wrongdoing and the promise of incarceration

I NEVER thought I would see a political candidate hang the transgressions of their partner and claim that they were just as responsible for them as the person committing them, all with the chutzpah of just publicly stating that he committed sexual assault and has an upcoming trial for Rape.

Donald Trump is the Al Capone of politics… can’t wait to see him defeated. Also, would be entirely happy to see Bannon destitute, Conway deemed unemployable. Pence shamed from the public stage for a lifetime.

For the first time in Foreign Policy’s nearly 50-year history, it has endorsed a candidate for president: Democratic nominee Hillary Clinton.

“In the nearly half century history of Foreign Policy, the editors of this publication have never endorsed a candidate for political office,” the editors wrote in its endorsement. “We cherish and fiercely protect this publication’s independence and its reputation for objectivity, and we deeply value our relationship with all of our readers, regardless of political orientation. It is for all these reasons that FP’s editors are now breaking with tradition to endorse Hillary Clinton for the next president of the United States.”

The editors of Foreign Policy called Clinton “one of the best qualified candidates this country has produced since World War II” who is “unquestionably well-prepared to lead this country.”

I got criticized here for dong Schieffer in his Southern dialect a while back, before he retired. I regret doing that now. Because putting him in dialect gave the BS he spews, most of the time, too much dignity. The full of vapidity of his commentary is clouded if you put in dialect. That was actually one of the truer moments of the “debate” – yeah, Lincoln was a politician (surprize!)
I go with RuPaul on this:

What do you think about Hillary Clinton and the Democrats?
[Laughs.] I fucking love them. I have always loved them. And let me just say this: If you’re a politician — not just in Washington but in business and industry, you have to be a politician — there are a lot of things that you have to do that you’re not proud of. There are a lot of compromises you have to make because it means that you can get this other thing over here. And if you think that you can go to fucking Washington and be rainbows and butterflies the whole time, you’re living in a fucking fantasy world. So now, having said that, think about what a female has to do with that: All of those compromises, all of that shit, double it by ten. And you get to understand who this woman is and how powerful, persuasive, brilliant, and resilient she is. Any female executive, anybody who has been put to the side — women, blacks, gays — for them to succeed in a white-male-dominated culture is an act of brilliance. Of resilience, of grit, of everything you can imagine. So, what do I think of Hillary? I think she’s fucking awesome. Is she in bed with Wall Street? Goddammit, I should hope so! You’ve got to dance with the devil. So which of the horrible people do you want? That’s more of the question. Do you want a pompous braggart who doesn’t know anything about diplomacy? Or do you want a badass bitch who knows how to get shit done? That’s really the question

    I’m with the baddass bitch.

I’m asking, not saying, but I’ve heard that diabetes can sometimes cause a similar change in personality/psychological make up? I think he also had a pretty severe bout with malaria a few years ago. I don’t know if that would cause a glitch in his software, but whatever the cause, he’s had one. @Omnes Omnibus: I just didn’t like her. Really didn’t like her. I have always been liberal, but a decade ago I watched the sunday morning shows religiously, so maybe I bought into all the lies? Of course, back then I liked the NYT and I really liked Tim Russert and I cried when he died, so there’s that. I thought I was pretty well informed, but looking back I suspect I wasn’t quite as well informed as I thought. That would probably be an understatement.

That all stopped about 8 years ago, thank goodness. Getting involved in the Obama campaign, turning off the sunday shows, getting my news NOT from the mainstream media, were all pivotal things for me. Now I probably have 3 or 4 issues with Clinton (some bad decisions on her part, too cozy with bankers, concerns about foreign policy, some bad feelings from racist stuff in 2008, etc).

But the main point of my previous comment wasn’t that I’m not her biggest fan – my point was that she impressed me tonight. I have a much more positive view of her than I did a few months ago. I’ve made a concerted effort to try to see her in a different light than I did previously, trying to be more objective. Her choosing Kaine was a pivotal point for me – my first reaction was quite negative and then I had to do a bit of soul searching after I was reminded of what a good guy I thought Kaine was in 2007/2008.

Why ask when you can just make them do what you want” was his brag. I remember stunned silence, not admiration. No yucks no congratulations. the guy got no status. I won’t go into the gory details. but he sensed that he wasn’t getting the bro status he thought his brag would get, so he tried to explain. And there was silence, and finally one guy said ‘So, dude, you rape ducks too’ People didn’t want him around. What if someone you knew in the dorm started going out with him. For the first time in Foreign Policy’s nearly 50-year history, it has endorsed a candidate for president: Democratic nominee Hillary Clinton.

As first lady, New York senator, and secretary of state, Hillary Clinton regularly distinguished herself by her intelligence, dogged work ethic, ability to work across the political aisle, and leadership on difficult issues. She has devoted her entire life to public service and has been a powerful and effective advocate for women, children, and those in need at home and abroad. Whether you agree with all the policy stances of her campaign or not, impartial eyes will conclude that her proposals on climate change, combating terrorism, and human rights are thoughtful and comprehensive — and ultimately worthy of consideration. Hillary Clinton is a quality candidate who is unquestionably well-prepared to lead this country.

Trump has played into the hands of terrorists with his fearmongering, with his sweeping and unwarranted vilification of Muslims, and by sensationalizing the threat they pose. He has promised to take punitive actions against America’s Pacific trading partners that would be devastating to the world economy and in violation of our legal obligations. He has dismissed the science of climate change and denied its looming and dangerous reality. He has promoted a delusional and narcissistic view of the world, one in which he seems to feel that the power of his personality in negotiations could redirect the course of other nations, remake or supplant treaties, and contain those tyrants he does not actually embrace. He has repeatedly denigrated the U.S. military — its leadership, service members, veterans, and the families who stand behind them. He has also derided the intelligence community.

Everybody notice how quickly NR hightailed it out of here when the CNN debate poll showed up? For two weeks, he/she hasn’t been able to find a spinnably bad moment for Hillary, and he/she thought one had finally arrived, till numbers decreed otherwise.

Honestly, I think this debate was fine from Hillary’s point of view (I mean politically — substantively, of course she clobbered him). The past few days had been so dire for Trump, it carried eerie echoes of the last days of the Nixon presidency, and, however logistically impossible it seems to dump him, a catastrophic debate tonight might have somehow led to that. Trump did just well enough tonight that the party is irrevocably stuck with him, which is exactly what Team Clinton and all of us should want.

I’m 65 suddenly. Don’t worry too much, it doesn’t hurt that bad. And the changes are really slow, so you don’t notice them. Then one day you need to scurry out of the way of the bus coming around the corner – Yikes!!!

    kidding, mostly… ;-)

Tim Kaine interrupts Pence more than vice-versa, so Kaine loses the debate. Trump interrupts Clinton almost exclusively, and Trump wins by not launching his chair into the crowd and audibly farting.

    @WaterGirl:

Much obliged. For a lot of guys, being called a pu$$y is about as close to dropping the gloves as it gets. Not as bad as “the c-word” used to/for/about a woman, by any stretch. And guys who have a reasonable grip on reality don’t get too bent about it.

And then, we have Deadbeat Donnie, of course.

    @jl:

I was a boatswain’s mate (pronounced bosun’s mate) in the US Navy from 1970-1973, and berthed with some Jarheads too. It was like living in a locker room at a gym built in 1942, made of sheet metal, because that’s what it was. There were lots of very dirty jokes and filthy talk, but…

If we had heard that kind of rape-ish talk someone would have gotten the crap beat out of himself at 2 am in the red lights of the USN after lights out. They surely wouldn’t have had buddies to bar hop with. No one who isn’t sick talks like that, and no one who isn’t sick would put up with that shit.

We all have Mothers, for Dog’s sake, except evidently for Donny Trump, and Rudy 9-11. Some of us have many loved women in our lives. But not Trump.

I have friends my age (old enuff to know better) who still go backpacking in the big hills toward the Blue Ridge!! I’m too fragile for that stuff!

    @Tom Q:

. Trump did just well enough tonight that the party is irrevocably stuck with him, which is exactly what Team Clinton and all of us should want.

Yep. That’s pretty much my conclusion as well. I think that Trump did well with the GOP base and also included enough Republican platform talking points to satisfy the GOP leadership.

But he also let out more of his own vision of the world, and that shit is crazy. He has a bizzaro world idea of the Syrian conflict, and no idea, none, Nada, zip, of who the various factions in the region are.

People have been commenting on his wanting to put Hillary in jail. I wonder whether he leaked future Republican strategy.

If Hillary wins, it appears that the Republicans will demand a special prosecutor to hound her and drum up an impeachment charge.
