So the video has Donald saying “I have never been so ashamed of this country”. I believe there could be more to what he said. His supporters go crazy and love him for it.

I remember when Michelle Obama said “For the first time in my adult life, I am proud of my country…” and the wingnuts became unglued.

But its form will consist of the 27% taking firm control of the Party and losing everything because of it. Nominating ever crazier candidates who appeal to them and repulse everyone else. Driving any moderate conservative that still exists into the Democratic Party which will become the default national party for many years.

Eventually, the Dems will split into a Conservative and Liberal wing, and few will remember the GOP.

What is really sad & disgusting about this whole election – Trump is being brought down because there is video proof that he is the person everyone knows he is.

He has no policys other than building a wall and criminalizing his opponent – neither of which stop people voting for him. He has a team of advisors who are mainly batshit crazy – or dumb as posts – and these people would be running the country if Trump won the election. He has no religion, he has changed every viewpoint he ever stated in regard to war, peace, women’s rights etc etc. None of this matters – every republican of every classification would have voted for him – until they saw him in person talking like the gutter person he is about women.

Whoever gave that video to the WP has earned the Nobel Peace prize.

    October 12, 2016 at 10:08 pm

@Ian: I hope I’m correct too, but consider that they as a party have abandoned facts. Things like pollsters no longer matter. They’re giving up evidence based efforts at winning, and relying solely on propaganda. Each election they get worse on this front. There’s only so far it can go before it collapses on itself, and this election provides a clear window on how it will work.

On the one hand, “reasonable” Republicans are distancing themselves from Trump. See John McCain as example. On the other hand, this will hurt them among a large percentage of Republican voters. So they lose to the Dem. If it’s a primary, they lose to the even crazier Repuke who then loses to the Dem.

This purification of the crazy is going to keep resulting in losses until they snap out of it, or are utterly broken and defeated.

Or they take over, cancel all future elections, and we live in The Handmaid’s Tale world.

One of the reasons I reacted so viscerally to the sexual assault tape is that what Trump describes, “Just grab them by the pussy,” is, aside from the obvious anatomical differences, an exact description of what happened to me several times during junior high school. @Ian:

    According to Gallup:

Race appears to be a significant factor in seniors’ Republican realignment, because whites have become more solidly Republican in recent years, seniors are overwhelmingly white, and white seniors today are Republican-aligned.

    Pew Research:

Republicans hold a 49%-40% lead over the Democrats in leaned party identification among whites. The GOP’s advantage widens to 21 points among white men who have not completed college (54%-33%) and white southerners (55%-34%). The Democrats hold an 80%-11% advantage among blacks, lead by close to three-to-one among Asian Americans (65%-23%) and by more than two-to-one among Hispanics (56%-26%).

As women lean Democratic by 52%-36% we can infer the GOP is primarily the party of old white men and as Time magazine concluded:

“The 2016 presidential elections will likely go down in history for several reasons but certainly among them is the influence of those angry white voters witnessing their own last hurrah.”

    Leading to:

“some white people, it must be noted, are not happy about it. Two-thirds of New Hampshire Republicans support Donald Trump’s ban on Muslims entering the U.S., and one-third of Trump supporters in South Carolina support banning all gay people from entering the U.S. These are the white voters who want their issues at the center of the political conversation and want their votes at the center of the electoral process and see the equality of others as translating to their own marginalization.”

The goalposts haven’t moved so much as the old bigots are entrenching and doubling down as “Their America” drifts away and they become ever more embittered.

its form will consist of the 27% taking firm control of the Party and losing everything because of it. Nominating ever crazier candidates who appeal to them and repulse everyone else. Driving any moderate conservative that still exists into the Democratic Party which will become the default national party for many years.

Eventually, the Dems will split into a Conservative and Liberal wing, and few will remember the GOP.

I think this is a good call. The GOP’s 45% splits into 27% and 18%…the 18% mostly drifts over to the Dems, some of the 27% drift back into the woodwork as they age out…the Dems are big enough that they start to split between more conservative Dems and more socialist Dems…

…wait, normally when what I think will happen coincides with what I want to happen, I stop and do a reality check.

    Hmm

But in this case, it really does look like the most probably outcome here. The GOP can’t possibly find something – anything – to unite itself for quite a while post-Trump. It’ll be too ugly and too incoherent. Meanwhile, ‘Boring’ Hillary and the rest of the Democratic Justice League should continue to do a good job competently running things.

He tried the 35 years in business appointing women to high places, Lemon came right back with Cosby and Ailes, saying they hired women to high places too, but that didn’t prevent them from doing what they did to multiple women. Corey repeats 35 years nonsense. Asked about walking in on 15 year olds, he says he doesn’t know anything about beauty pageants and there were probably other people back there. He wants to know why if his business record doesn’t exonerate Trump from the accusations, then Hillary being appointed to defend a rapist shouldn’t protect her from blame, (huh), Lemon says Politifact says that the accusations about Kathy Shelton are completely false.

And the whole thing would look pretty bad. Beyond being able to scream “I’m suing the Times”, is there a point to that?

It’s been Trump’s go-to move since the 1970s. Worked just fine against intimidated individuals & small companies he wanted to cheat out of paying, since they didn’t have the time or money to actually take it to court. And (in his thoughts, at least) it discouraged some of his many enemies — other developers, local politicians, neighborhood zoning groups, nosy reporters — from getting too close to investigating Trump projects.

It won’t work on this stage, not with a global spotlight plus the weight of the NYTimes‘ reputation plus all the people who’ll happily stump up to help with legal fees… but it’s all he’s got.

@Jeffro: I think a sizable proportion of Trump support at the beginning was due to white people pissed off over a number if issues and who wanted change. Economic decline was part of that. Hard to remember now, but way way back Trump was known for aping progressive economic themes, right behind the xenophobia and bigotry.

I think the economic anxiety people are all cooked off by now. Trump dropped any bits of coherent fake economic progressive agenda. Most of his economic program was bog standard reactionary plutocratic GOP BS, he wasn’t interested in it and didn’t know anything about it. And HRC has been sticking to the Bernie-ized Dem economic platform with no mixed messages or dog whistles.

The hordes of Trump voters exiting his campaign in the polls contain a lot of the people pissed off by economics. The bigots are staying, When are they going to get a chance to go all in on the hate and fear again? Probably never.

Edit: I do think that white economic anxiety that pushed people to Trump rather than Sanders must be mixed with at least some soft bigotry. But those people can get turned off by the hard core version.

When I did cold call phone banking, Trump supporters seemed to be general ignorant bigots and scared or self-righteous and bitter authoritarians. Even if the exodus keeps up, that will be at least a third of the voting population.

I think something to the economic anxiety theory of Trump support, but that was not most of them, and as I said above, I think they are the ones fleeing over last several weeks. Of course, you’ll still hear Trump supporters natter about it. The idea is out there, so they know it can be used as an excuse. Only the white nationalists and David Duke types want to yell from the rooftops that they hate Jews, Mexicans, Arabs, Muslims, and want women to be treated like property again.

I think a sizable proportion of Trump support at the beginning was due to white people pissed off over a number if issues and who wanted change. Economic decline was part of that. Hard to remember now, but way way back Trump was known for aping progressive economic themes, right behind the xenophobia and bigotry.

There was a bare minimum of lip service that Trump paid to “elites” making decisions against the interests of working people and “Washington” not listening. But – there has been no economic decline, especially amongst a majority of Trump supporters. These folks are a) bigoted, b) not in touch with reality for a variety of reasons, and c) wouldn’t know what a progressive economic theme was if it hit them in the fanny.

He’s a strongman; he’s an older, white, male, nominally rich, indisputably famous strongman; and he promised to replace whatever was missing in their lives with a sense of purpose and certainty: WE ARE GOING TO SHUT OUT THE ‘OTHER’, AND KEEP YOU SAFE FROM ALL THE FAKE DEMONS WE’VE BEEN SCARING YOU WITH.

I just can’t even wrap my head around his thought processes.

Narcissists generally have very low self-image and present this facade to the world – the bragging, the domination, etc. to present that he isn’t the person he believes himself to be, and to get the world to view him in the way he needs to be viewed. When this kind of stuff happens, when the world doesn’t validate that image they can get depressed or they can lash out. Trump lashes out. He’s the victim here, because the world won’t validate his projected image. It can be existential – they will fight like its life or death. At some point the conflict becomes untenable, the facade breaks, and suicide isn’t uncommon. I’m a bit worried about that, to be honest. Donald’s always gotten a lot of deference because he was generally harmless. He was an unnecessarily famous real estate douchebag. Clearly he should have been on the registry of sex offenders, so not totally harmless, but now he’s seen as a real threat to the nation, and every knife is going to come out and every one will get twisted. He’s never had to cope with that before. I wonder if he can.

By my count, the number of women who are or have alleged sexual assault/groping/inappropriate touching by Trump is up to 8. That includes his ex wife, the wife of a former business partner, two beauty pageant contestants, a visitor to Mar a Lago, a worker in Trump tower, a businesswoman traveling first class, and most significantly a reporter for a national entertainment media magazine.
Trump’s denial was only 3 days ago. If this pace continues, he (and the GOP) is completely fucked, not just for the election, but for the rest of his life.

@Aleta: Aleta, I’d probably listen to him occasionally on fringe talk radio, he’s just so fascinating weird. I loved listening to Art Bell when he was on.

Art Bell also had a mail-order Phillipino bride and never ran for president. Remember those carefree days when these people were just fun to listen too and they weren’t demanding the nuclear codes?

ETA- A topic that has come up more than once in the last few months with friends is how nice things were when all these nuts were obsessed with UFOs and the Kennedy assassination. I think it’s no accident that all this Trumpy-TEA Party nuttery has emerged as the WW2 generation has died off.

Drumpf is a fucking pervert and predator. Has been for about 40 years. Thanks GOP!

@smith: The main reason I expect the lawsuit over Trump raping a 13-year old not to go anywhere is that the statute of limitations ran out over a decade ago. They’re going to need a really creative explanation that the judge buys into for it to go forward. There are also a number of very weird things about the case, dating back to when it was originally filed in California back in the spring.

@Tissue Thin Pseudonym: yep. I didn’t not think it’s a Clinton ratfucker filing the suit. But something like that bogus suit against Obama to prove he was a cocaine using hustler. Or picked up a hustler and gave him drugs. Or whatever that ridiculous thing was about in 2008. A loose nut.

@Gelfling 545: Might as well skip that and go directly to a sidecar. Cognac, lemon juice, and orange liqueur.

@smith: The Trump lawsuit involving the Epstien-procured 13yo has been filed twice, and voluntarily dismissed twice, each time so new evidence could be incorporated into the complaint. That makes me think it is a pretty thin case that just hopes to settle should it survive a defense motion to dismiss.

I don’t think we should expect this one to go anywhere.

@Ella in New Mexico: pretty much every rich and powerful person of that time was feted by Epstein. I’m sad that he didn’t have to serve more time.
