Balloon Juice

Come for the politics, stay for the snark.

Is it negotiation when the other party actually wants to shoot the hostage?

A Senator Walker would also be an insult to reason, rationality, and decency.

Just because you believe it, that doesn’t make it true.

Impressively dumb. Congratulations.

Too often we confuse noise with substance. too often we confuse setbacks with defeat.

I’d hate to be the candidate who lost to this guy.

Perhaps you mistook them for somebody who gives a damn.

Let’s delete this post and never speak of this again.

No offense, but this thread hasn’t been about you for quite a while.

If senate republicans had any shame, they’d die of it.

I’d like to think you all would remain faithful to me if i ever tried to have some of you killed.

David Nir, Kos’ political director who helped us create our “winnables” list, reports on a new poll that looks at Trump’s impact on down-ticket races:

  • Against a Republican “who continues to endorse Donald Trump” the Democratic margin moves from a 7-point advantage to a 12-point advantage.
  • Similarly, against a “Republican candidate who had supported Trump previously, but just withdrew their support” the Democratic margin moves from a 7-point advantage to a 12-point advantage.
  • Finally, even against a “Republican candidate who never formally endorsed Donald Trump and now says they won’t vote for him” the Democratic margin moves from a 7-point advantage to a 10-point advantage.

Let’s give them some money to hang Trump around their opponents’ necks:

12 points is the estimated margin to overcome gerrymandering. That’s correct – Dems need to win the popular vote about 56-44 in order to get the smallest of majorities in the House.

Lowlife Lou Dobbs publicized the address and phone number of Jessica Leeds, one of the women who accused Donald Trump of groping her, to his 792,000 followers on Thursday morning.

Dobbs linked to a post from a conservative news site that purported to link Leeds to the Clinton Foundation. The site published Leeds’ address and phone number — taken from public records — and then claimed, falsely, that her phone number is the same as a phone number for the Clinton Foundation.

He also quoted a tweet from a Trump supporter, which has since been deleted, that included Leeds’ phone number and address.

Dobbs’ tweet has been retweeted more than 800 times.
Update, 3:25 p.m.: Dobbs tweeted a link to this post along with an apology: “My Retweet, My Mistake, My Apology to Jessica Leeds”

The entire country heard Trump say he sexually assaults women, because he can.

Nearly a week later, a bit of movement toward Hillary in the polls, maybe, but that’s it. Tied in Ohio again.

I guess the fallacy is that Trump’s numbers should fall commensurate with the deplorability of what he’s shown to have done.

A relatively minor allegation against Trump that won’t get researched further, but rings completely true, was posted in the comments section of the NYT article about the new allegations against Mr. Octopu*(sy):

I’m an 18 year old college freshman, and in February I attend the Republican debate at Saint Anselm College in New Hampshire with my AP Government and Politics class. I went up to the stage during a commercial break and shook hands with several candidates. When I put my hand out to Trump, in a fashion that very clearly intended a handshake, he reached past my hand and touched my cheek, saying, “So beautiful.” It was disturbing and inappropriate, especially since I was obviously a student (I was surrounded by a group of my peers and do not look particularly old for my age). I was in shock and I didn’t say anything, but I regret not standing up to him for that small but unacceptable act.

Not sexual assault, but definitely inappropriate and creepy.

This. Here’s another anecdote posted in the comments section of the NYT article about Trump groping two women:

In the late 1980s Donald Trump tried to pick up my secretary. This was while he was married to Marla Maples and getting great press for being such a good “family man.” My secretary was doing nothing except standing at the front entrance of the Plaza Hotel with her uncle, who was one of the doormen. Trump looked her up and down, and then turned to the uncle and told him to tell my secretary to meet him in his office in Trump Tower at a certain hour that afternoon. Then he turned, walked down the steps and got into his limo, without ever once saying anything to my secretary.

Trump followers will insist that the poster is a liar, and there is no evidence that this actually happened, but the story rings completely true.

    From Bloomberg:

Republican presidential nominee Donald Trump rebuffed political aides’ requests to research his past, people familiar with the matter said, a decision that contributed to his campaign being caught unprepared for the past week’s barrage of claims he mistreated women.

It’s SOP to have a team dig though the candidate’s past, to find what the opposition will. Not doing that, Trump set himself up to be blindsided.

    October 13, 2016 at 5:53 pm

@Major Major Major Major: Yeah, somewhere around 12-15 points then their gerrymandering becomes their undoing. The key to making gerrymandering work is to build thin R majorities in some districts and deep D majorities in others. In a state with 50% D and 50% R and 5 districts (20% of voters in each), you build something like a 62D/38R district and you build 4 47D/53R districts. In a tight election you concede the heavy D district but you win the other 4. In a D+5 election, you still win 80% of the seats. In a D+8 election, you get wiped out – you get nothing.

Wave elections are rare and Republicans have been able to count on increased turnout in midterm elections, so it’s a fairly safe strategy for them. This might be the one year that it completely comes apart. Ryan is in an R+3 district. If it were anyone else, he’d probably be toast, but having someone that powerful in your district is beneficial even if you lean D.

Another first hand account of Trump’s creepy behavior from the comments section…

This is my “Trump Story”. In the spring of 1996, I was in a charity fashion show hosted by DIFFA. The event was held at the Puck Building. Donald Trump was there with Marla Maples.

The organizers set up hair, make up, and wardrobe on one of the upper floors. The racks of clothes were set up in such a way as to provide some privacy to the women/girls who were changing into their outfits. The idea was the models could step through the clothes and change without being in full view of the rest of the room.

At the end of the night, all of the models were changing back into their street clothes. I remember getting dressed, turning around, and seeing Donald Trump standing in the middle of the clothes racks watching all of us.

A highly credible first hand account of Trump sexually assaulting a reporter for People Magazine, published by People Magazine:

We walked into that room alone, and Trump shut the door behind us. I turned around, and within seconds he was pushing me against the wall and forcing his tongue down my throat… [exactly what he told BillyBush he does]

I was stunned. And I was grateful when Trump’s longtime butler burst into the room a minute later, as I tried to unpin myself.

The butler informed us that Melania would be down momentarily, and it was time to resume the interview…The butler left us, and I fumbled with my tape recorder. Trump smiled and leaned forward.

“You know we’re going to have an affair, don’t you?” he declared, in the same confident tone he uses when he says he’s going to make America great again.

Rep. “I am calling on the attorney general and supporting his efforts to fully prosecute WikiLeaks and its founder for violating the Espionage Act. And I’m also calling on Secretary of State Hillary Clinton to declare WikiLeaks a foreign terrorist organization,” King said on WNIS radio on Sunday evening.

During a Trump campaign stop in Florida on Wednesday, a woman in the crowd fainted. She was treated for heat exhaustion and then returned to the rally. On stage, Trump was struck by her toughness, and boasted of how resilient his supporters were – tougher, even, than NFL players.

“That woman was out cold, and now she’s coming back,” Trump said from the podium. “See, we don’t go by these new, and very much softer, NFL rules. Concussion … ‘Uh oh, got a little ding on the head? No, no, you can’t play for the rest of the season.’ Our people are tough.”

Hello buds. About to watch the NC Senate debate: Deborah Ross vs. Richard Burr.

So good to know Burr’s seat is in play. Bring it on!

In gubernatorial debate, McCrory tried to associate Roy Cooper with John Edwards. Funniest to me, though: McCrory kept begging Cooper not to bring up social issues. Which are usually what the GOP runs on, but not when the bathroom bill blew up so badly on McCrory. It was amusing.

Chuck Todd moderated the gubernatorial — and did well.

We have Jonathan Karl for the senatorial. Gag.

Deborah Ross up first. In power fuschia. And she’s got some good ads up about Washington being good to Burr, even if he hasn’t been good for NC.

Burr is tethering himself to Trump. Give the man an anvil!

Jonathan Karl finds that interesting. He throws a question about Trump’s sexual assaulting.

Burr says if Trump says he didn’t do it, he didn’t do it. Notes how many Republicans are standing with Trump.

Deborah Ross cannot believe her good fortune, although she throws Hillary under the bus for the emails.

@lamh36: NBC is toxic. They have a LOT to answer for.

I’d like to see Jeff Zucker lose his job over this. NBC is clearly infotainment, and shucking and jiving for the GOP, even while they hide behind MSNBC’s three hours nightly (with repeats) of libtard programming.

    @Patricia Kayden:

Did he all of a sudden figure out that he lost both debates?

Yes. He knew on-stage when he lost the first debate, which is why he spent the rest of the week in a rage fit attacking the weakest targets he could find. In the second debate she didn’t actually humiliate him in front of the audience, but he also tried all his abusive male power tricks, and they had no effect. He spent a couple of days trying to reassure himself that he won, until he got enough media feedback to find out Hillary beat him again. The worst wound of his life cut deeper, he’s lashing out in every direction. If you’ve ever spent much time with abusive narcissists, Trump’s behavior is really easy to read. It’s not that he always believes he won, it’s that admitting he lost, even to himself, is unendurable. He craves external validation much more than regularly insecure people.
