David Nir, Kos’ political director who helped us create our “winnables” list, reports on a new poll that looks at Trump’s impact on down-ticket races:
- Against a Republican “who continues to endorse Donald Trump” the Democratic margin moves from a 7-point advantage to a 12-point advantage.
- Similarly, against a “Republican candidate who had supported Trump previously, but just withdrew their support” the Democratic margin moves from a 7-point advantage to a 12-point advantage.
- Finally, even against a “Republican candidate who never formally endorsed Donald Trump and now says they won’t vote for him” the Democratic margin moves from a 7-point advantage to a 10-point advantage.
Let’s give them some money to hang Trump around their opponents’ necks:

That is probably why they an say there are others as well.
? Martin
@Major Major Major Major: Yeah, somewhere around 12-15 points then their gerrymandering becomes their undoing. The key to making gerrymandering work is to build thin R majorities in some districts and deep D majorities in others. In a state with 50% D and 50% R and 5 districts (20% of voters in each), you build something like a 62D/38R district and you build 4 47D/53R districts. In a tight election you concede the heavy D district but you win the other 4. In a D+5 election, you still win 80% of the seats. In a D+8 election, you get wiped out – you get nothing.
Wave elections are rare and Republicans have been able to count on increased turnout in midterm elections, so it’s a fairly safe strategy for them. This might be the one year that it completely comes apart. Ryan is in an R+3 district. If it were anyone else, he’d probably be toast, but having someone that powerful in your district is beneficial even if you lean D.

@Baud: Had Baud been a Trump advisor, he wouldn’t be melting down into a gooey puddle right now. It’s a shame he hasn’t availed himself of your services after you ended your own campaign.

@Gelfling 545:
I work with a young guy who is a very devout Christian. He is also a dyed in the wool Republican (no idea why). He does not push his religion on anyone so I respect that part. The asshole was on TV during out lunch today going on about how he has sacrificed & how he has suffered to save America. My co-workers comment was “does he have a crown of thorns?” Trump has lost this guy at least.
Baud
@Patricia Kayden: He tried. I insisted on being paid upfront. That was that.

@lamh36: Halperin’s on the fainting couch now.

@trollhattan: Oh my gawd. It’s like the Monster of the Id in Forbidden Planet.

@Baud: @Patricia Kayden: @scav:
I think it’s sinking in for Dinesh that Trump will get his ass kicked on Election Day and he’s growing even more unhinged.
Kay
I feel like 14 year old girls would be good at sneering at him and walking away :)
So gross that he thinks this is some kind of high point for them, meeting this giant, sniffling wreck with his weird shiny hair.
Baud
@jk: More unhinged??? The door has been removed from the frame, taken to the garage, and sanded down.

@Mike J: but the way there’s a mass delusion among well-meaning liberals that policies which serve only to enrich the landowners will somehow help the poor or the environment.. and that all construction is just a handout to developers/the Chinese… smh
ETA: @WereBear: I frakking love that movie. Have the anniversary tin box version.
Baud
@me: Personally, I’m not all that happy that the NYT is restoring their reputation by being Trump’s target.

Hello buds. About to watch the NC Senate debate: Deborah Ross vs. Richard Burr.
So good to know Burr’s seat is in play. Bring it on!
In gubernatorial debate, McCrory tried to associate Roy Cooper with John Edwards. Funniest to me, though: McCrory kept begging Cooper not to bring up social issues. Which are usually what the GOP runs on, but not when the bathroom bill blew up so badly on McCrory. It was amusing.
Chuck Todd moderated the gubernatorial — and did well.
We have Jonathan Karl for the senatorial. Gag.
Deborah Ross up first. In power fuschia. And she’s got some good ads up about Washington being good to Burr, even if he hasn’t been good for NC.
Kay
@me:
Yes, because he’s such a serious journalist. He’s probably mad Trump is tanking because he can’t write a stupid book about his hero.
Patricia Kayden
@Baud: LOL!! Ouch.
@jk: Growing more unhinged? D’Souza? Impossible.

Warning: Prolonged exposure to Mark Halperin may induce nausea. Halperin and Howard Kurtz are the most repulsive members of the both sides do it bedwetter’s brigrade.

@Elizabelle: Chuck Todd moderated the gubernatorial — and did well.

And first question from Jonathan Karl to Dem candidate Deborah Ross: why do people not like Hillary Clinton? A poll says they find Donald Trump more trustworthy.
Le sigh.
BillinGlendaleCA
@trollhattan: Well, Trump does have experience with football, he ran a football franchise(into the ground).
lamh36
I DON’T TRUST ANYONE ON MSNBC OR NBC when it comes to Donald Trump….NBC has likely been knowing FOR YEARS that Donald Trump, was a sexual predator!
Elizabelle
@Patricia Kayden: It was a surprise to me, too. But he did fine. Maybe it’s the smaller venue …. PBS, yet.
BillinGlendaleCA
@Baud: If we only had more candidates like Baud!.
Elizabelle
Burr is “going to support my nominee. I am going to support Donald Trump.”
Well alrighty then.
Elizabelle
Burr is tethering himself to Trump. Give the man an anvil!
Jonathan Karl finds that interesting. He throws a question about Trump’s sexual assaulting.
Burr says if Trump says he didn’t do it, he didn’t do it. Notes how many Republicans are standing with Trump.
Deborah Ross cannot believe her good fortune, although she throws Hillary under the bus for the emails.
Elizabelle
@lamh36: NBC is toxic. They have a LOT to answer for.
I’d like to see Jeff Zucker lose his job over this. NBC is clearly infotainment, and shucking and jiving for the GOP, even while they hide behind MSNBC’s three hours nightly (with repeats) of libtard programming.
Plus: Andrea Greenspan. Gag3.
jk
@Baud: @Patricia Kayden:
The best part of these remaining days is seeing the wingnuts lose more of their shit with each passing day. I’m looking forward to Sean Hannity’s reaction when Trump gets humiliated on Election Day.
? Martin
@lamh36: News divisions are entirely separate, and if anything the news division is unlikely to go digging through their own parent companies laundry, and an NBC employee isn’t going to leak tape to their own network – they’ll leak it to a competitor to ensure it gets aired.
sukabi
@lamh36: I’d like to know how many they’ve paid to keep quiet…my guess it’s a lot.
? Martin
@Elizabelle: Zucker is head of CNN now. But agree, he should be canned at the very least for paying Lewandowski to barf all over the TV under their label.

@Aleta: This is some good CD2 analysis. Thanks for the link.
jk
@lamh36:
Don’t forget all those blowjobs Trump got from that pukestain Joe Scarborough and his dimwitted sidekick Mika. Aside from rebuking Trump for his birtherism, Chris Matthews spent a lot of time salivating over Trump
@Elizabelle:
Jeff Zucker was the jackass who thought CNN hiring Corey Lewandowksi was a good idea.
Elizabelle
@? Martin: Oh, sorry. Zucker is with CNN now. Which explains that network’s circling the drain.
CNN has been good, if all Trump, recently, but they have months to account for .
#fireJeff Zucker!
Patricia Kayden
@lamh36: NBC tried to hide the Billy Bush video.
Even Politico is questioning why NBC sat on that video for so long.
Patricia Kayden
@jk: Karl Rove is who I want to see. He was a hoot in 2008 when Ohio went for Obama. Unforgettable.

@Patricia Kayden:
Yes. He knew on-stage when he lost the first debate, which is why he spent the rest of the week in a rage fit attacking the weakest targets he could find. In the second debate she didn’t actually humiliate him in front of the audience, but he also tried all his abusive male power tricks, and they had no effect. He spent a couple of days trying to reassure himself that he won, until he got enough media feedback to find out Hillary beat him again. The worst wound of his life cut deeper, he’s lashing out in every direction. If you’ve ever spent much time with abusive narcissists, Trump’s behavior is really easy to read. It’s not that he always believes he won, it’s that admitting he lost, even to himself, is unendurable. He craves external validation much more than regularly insecure people.
Joel
@redshirt: state polling has been really sparse this cycle. Seems like it’s down from 2012 and 2008.
Joel
@Trentrunner: well, PEC has Clinton +4.4 in the meta margin, not terribly close. Between 2008 and 2012, really.
satby
@Mike J: that was beautiful.

@Kay: I thought writing wrap-ups of Republican presidential losses was how Halperin made his name. Trump should be their biggest book ever.
