Balloon Juice

Come for the politics, stay for the snark.

Let me eat cake. The rest of you could stand to lose some weight, frankly.

We cannot abandon the truth and remain a free nation.

Damn right I heard that as a threat.

Is it negotiation when the other party actually wants to shoot the hostage?

Wow, I can’t imagine what it was like to comment in morse code.

They traffic in fear. it is their only currency. if we are fearful, they are winning.

… riddled with inexplicable and elementary errors of law and fact

Eh, that’s media spin. biden’s health is fine and he’s doing a good job.

The truth is, these are not very bright guys, and things got out of hand.

Fuck the extremist election deniers. What’s money for if not for keeping them out of office?

Tick tock motherfuckers!

Today’s GOP: why go just far enough when too far is right there?

T R E 4 5 O N

Sitting here in limbo waiting for the dice to roll

I’m pretty sure there’s only one Jack Smith.

If you are still in the GOP, you are an extremist.

I really should read my own blog.

JFC, are there no editors left at that goddamn rag?

My years-long effort to drive family and friends away has really paid off this year.

After roe, women are no longer free.

Whatever happens next week, the fight doesn’t end.

When do we start airlifting the women and children out of Texas?

Nancy smash is sick of your bullshit.

The next time the wall street journal editorial board speaks the truth will be the first.

Anecdata, but….the Republicans in my life (4-6 of them) are all voting for Hilary. Not due to me (although I try) but because they can’t accept Trump. Also, I’ve become obsessed with checking Sam wang’s site….?

Well, I’ll go with something true….I was moved by Michelle Obama’s speech this Thursday. Listening, i felt that she had … Experienced that kind of personal degradation. Rose above it, but could never forget it – or the threat of it becoming WORSE, instead of better.

I thought things had become better, baby steps. I’m a woman who served 20 yrs in the army, from 1984-2005. Things got better – until all the stories of sexual trauma began emerging from the deployments in Iraq & Afghanistan. We had fought to eliminate gender harassment….I ASSUMED that would include rape! I am told (I was in the medical field) that a significant fraction of PTSD is related to sexual trauma. ANY form of sexual harassment or assault – among any combinations of genders – needs to be a “crash & burn” offense. But that will take a while, because these offenses are very difficult to prove. Sigh. Well. I didn’t mean to be such a downer! Balloon Juice has been a lifeline for some years now, and I’m glad to be a part of this very interesting community, even if usually asynchronously. ?

I cut a hole in the cap with some tin snips, then fitted it about 6 feet up the pole, then fixed the duct to it. The theory is that the squirrels will climb inside it, but won’t be able to get past the cap (or chew through it) and the duct is to slippery for then to climb on the outside. So far it’s working.

If you don’t like it, you can leave. It’s okay. We’re not trying to be everybody’s favorite band, we’re going to be who we are and do what we do and anyone who’s with us, we’d love to have them join in.”

Not really, probably. By “cash-only” I didn’t mean that I pay for everything exclusively with Hamiltons and Benjamins; more that I carry no debt at all. I have a debit card and use electronic transfers, and those seem to be fine with the Swedes.

But just as some people have an addiction to drugs or alcohol or sex, I am unreliable when it comes to credit. So about 35 years ago I cut all my credit/charge cards in little pieces, settled all my outstanding debts over a period of several years, and vowed never again to buy things I couldn’t pay for on the spot — a vow which I have kept, including three new cars in that period.

As for Sweden, it’s funny, I took one of those stupid Facebook quizzes the other day “What Ideal Country Should You Live In?” and Sweden was my answer. I’ve never even visited there but have always wanted to, and am thinking I might just do that next year when I celebrate my 75th birthday.

Consider this my “cry into the wilderness” post. I’ve always found the Balloon Juice community to be filled with wonderful people, so I figured this was as good of a place as any to dump in search of wisdom.

So, my girlfriend of year got a new job, and I, being in love, decided to pull up roots and follow her.

Started selling stuff. Started looking for work. Out of my old job. Began the process of selling my home. Announced to everyone that I’m moving.

About two hours ago, she told me that the stress of having to work through all of this and commit to moving multiple states away with each other was just too much to handle (There’s more behind it- isn’t there always…) and she thought we should break up.

I’m not upset with her- because I love her, and if she’s not happy, I’m not happy.

But I’m sitting here, lost, and have no clue where to turn. My life just blew up, and the thought of facing everyone I know and saying “hey, that whole life change thing with the woman of my dreams deal… guess what?”

I feel like just getting into my car, leaving town, and not being heard from for a week or month or year.

This may be the worst day of my life. And I just don’t know what to do.

So here I stand, typing to strangers. What a wild world.

Funny thing about 2011: the Sox’ meltdown came at almost the same moment as the Braves imploded, opening the door for the eventual champions, the Cardinals. And if it had been 2012, neither implosion would have occurred, because the Sox and the Braves would have already clinched one of the wild card spots under the new rules. There would have been no drama on the last day of the regular season.

Josh Marshall is writing a book on Donald Trump and “Trumpism,” and he’s thinking aloud and posting it at TPM. In his current post, he writes about the shrinking Republican base. Here’s the last paragraph.

There’s much discussion of the fact that many whites see the prospect of a white majority America slipping away and this election as the ‘last chance’ to turn back the tide. But another dimension of the story is that as the GOP electoral base has shrunk it has required increasingly apocalyptic arguments and more extravagant promises to activate that base to a sufficient intensity to win elections. But that comes at the cost of slowly degrading their own credibility by painting an escalating cast of horrors and dangers they’re never able to solve and in most cases do not even logically address. Most of these promises are simply unrealizable – thus the focus on blocking things rather than pushing an agenda that can sustain popular support. That in turn is I think the root of the now almost total disconnect between GOP elites (the ‘establishment’) and the bulk of Republicans voters. Trumpers say they’ve been lied to by their leaders. And in a very real sense they have been.

It makes a lot of sense.

About a quarter of them chose Michelle Obama’s speech at the DNC (other speeches ranged from political to non-, from anywhere in the past 5 decades). Then, Wednesday, after her New Hampshire speech, a majority of students asked if they could switch their topics because they want to research the context of the most recent speech — its place in history. They’re convinced it’s that important.

Is there maybe one person you feel comfortable reaching out to? Maybe there’s a friend you could delegate to spread the word so you don’t have to have the same painful conversation over and over.

Leaving town for a few days or a week to clear your head is not the worst idea, if you can think of someplace to be where you can breathe, and think, and grieve. @dazedandconfused: Wow, coming out of the blue like that, I’m impressed that you’re not rocking in the corner. Kudos to you for following your heart and jumping in with both feet to follow the woman you love, that says a lot about the kind of person you are.

Sadly, this is an old story. Sometimes people bail on relationships when things get real. On the positive side, she didn’t leave you at the church or wait until you were planning your wedding, and she didn’t wait until you’d actually relocated. So there’s that.

I know someone who quit their job for a better one, and after just 3 days in the new position it was clear that he had made a terrible mistake. He swallowed his pride, went back to the old boss and asked for his job back. They were thrilled to have him! So if you liked your old job, I say contact them right away to tell them you aren’t moving after all, and why. See if you can get your old job back; you can always start planning a new adventure on your own if you decide that’s what you want to do, but I don’t see an advantage to being jobless while you do that.

You said you began the process of selling your home. Unless you are wanting to move to a new home, if it were me I would contact the realtor ASAP and explain the situation. I am not a lawyer, but I don’t see that they can make you sell your house.

If it were me, and i was losing all the dreams of a life together with the woman I loved, I would be uncomfortable with all the moving pieces and would likely want to get back to the stability of my old job and the house that i (presumably) liked while I dealt with this huge emotional loss. I would, however, see if it would be possible to take a few weeks off to get my head together before starting back at work.

But if you do want to change your life – the things you can control like where you work or where you live – I say great! But do it on your own terms and your own timetable, not because the woman you love blew up your life. But if the idea of starting your life over somewhere else right now appeals to you, and you can afford to do that, then that is on your own terms and on your own timetable.

So that’s my two cents on the practical side of things. As for the emotional side of things, I am so sorry this happened to you. Sometimes I think it’s harder to lose the dreams we had of our future with someone than it is to lose things that are more tangible.

Hopefully there will be something in these ramblings that might be helpful. Even if there’s not, please know that you’re not alone in this, not as long as you keep talking to us snarling jackals at Balloon Juice. Big hugs.

Have a similar story, no need for details but you move on. If your friends truly are they will understand and give you sympathy. Mine did.

    @Ruckus:
Also something else to consider. This person and I are still on speaking terms, although we don’t much any more, this was over 15 yrs ago, and one of the things she has mentioned was that she considered her decision to be a mistake. Unfortunately for her, in the long run I feel like I’m better off. One of us is wrong. Could go either way.
You’ve gotten some good advice, this is a tough thing to go through but with your attitude you can make it out the other side OK.

@Matt McIrvin: Mostly rational. A while back, they managed to lose the check we had attached to our return. IIRC they separate the check from the return, scan in the return, and enter the amount of the check in a box at the bottom of the scan. Somewhere after that, the check vanished. So while they had the amount of the check, indicating that we had in fact sent a check, it never went through whatever processing they do afterwards. We noticed in mid-May that the check had not been cashed and contacted the regional office. It took them two days to figure out what had happened, at which point we got a phone call to let us know the nastygram was on the way and that we owed the original amount plus interest, even though it was totally not our fault. We paid it as soon as the nastygram arrived and were all clear about a week later, but it was annoying as hell.

Does it matter if you aren’t a lawyer but helped someone study for the bar exam?

I mean I don’t mind being a snarling jackal but lumped in with lawyers?
