Balloon Juice

Come for the politics, stay for the snark.

How can republicans represent us when they don’t trust women?

I’m pretty sure there’s only one Jack Smith.

Within six months Twitter will be fully self-driving.

Boeing: repeatedly making the case for high speed rail.

Relentless negativity is not a sign that you are more realistic.

A snarling mass of vitriolic jackals

Stop using mental illness to avoid talking about armed white supremacy.

Too often we hand the biggest microphones to the cynics and the critics who delight in declaring failure.

We’ll be taking my thoughts and prayers to the ballot box.

Republicans: The threats are dire, but my tickets are non-refundable!

Narcissists are always shocked to discover other people have agency.

Reality always lies in wait for … Democrats.

Nothing worth doing is easy.

Baby steps, because the Republican Party is full of angry babies.

Let’s show the world that autocracy can be defeated.

Nancy smash is sick of your bullshit.

Peak wingnut was a lie.

Some judge needs to shut this circus down soon.

That’s my take and I am available for criticism at this time.

In my day, never was longer.

Only Democrats have agency, apparently.

It’s not hopeless, and we’re not helpless.

Dead end MAGA boomers crying about Talyor Swift being a Dem is my kind of music. Turn it up.

Innocent people don’t delay justice.

Trying not to let the election bullshit get on my nerves. Doing so so at it.
I so want this election to be over so we can get on with it. We have a country to liberalize. There is lots of work to be done and an opposition made up of morons and idiots. It won’t be easy to give them what they need because that’s not what they want.

NBC/WSJ has a poll out with Clinton ahead by 11 points in all, +20 points with women and only down 3 points with men. If it holds it is an improvement of 9 points with women and 4 points with men over Obama in 2012.

ABC/WaPo also has a poll out giving Clinton a 4 point lead. They didn’t break-out the demographics but they do claim their polling says the tape has had no effect among women voters which I find highly unlikely.

Another good thing from the land down under:

… perhaps the most eloquent condemnation of Trump came from one of the houses of state parliament in New South Wales, which, according to BuzzFeed Australia, just passed a unanimous motion to declare Donald Trump a “revolting slug.” The motion—a symbolic declaration of sorts with no real legislative heft—was tendered by a member of the Greens Party:

“I move that this house condemns the misogynistic, hateful comments made by…Mr Donald Trump, about women and minorities, including the remarks revealed over the weekend that clearly describe sexual assault…and agrees with those who have described Mr Trump as ‘a revolting slug’ unfit for public office,” the motion read.

I would say it is unseasonably warm, in the Northeast, but I think seasons are
becoming more of a guideline than an actual thing.

Went to NYC to visit my bro. Nephew turns 12 tomorrow.

When he was born it was chilly. I had a sweatshirt and jacket to stay warm.

His first and second birthday we had a picnic type party in Central Park.

If you was chilly and blustery. One of those b’days, I wore just a windbreaker and I was cold.

But this warm October does not seem out-of-place compared to the previous weeks.

Late to the party – reading the last thread as I was
The sooner this election is done the sooner sanity will return to these United States. The media is 80% of the problem

Little hands, motor mouth says the elections are “rigged”. What does the media talk about for days
    – are the elections rigged?
    – it’s possible the elections are rigged
    – have previous elections been rigged?
    – who rigs elections?

What did they talk about in 2000 when the chads were falling all over the place
    – No no – not a problem
    – just the way it is
    – No state would rig its elections

Just like when little hands big idiot says Hillary is ill, or says Hillary should be in jail or we need drug test or any other stupidity – the media takes him seriously and discusses his off the planet lies of stupidity.

I’ll give the GOP the other 20% – they nominated him.

Just found out on FB that a friend from HS just passed away. He was always an inspiration to me, over sized in both body and mind. He will be missed by his family and his friends. RIP Manuel. I saw him 2 yrs ago at our class 65th birthday celebration. He looked and was very little different from decades ago. And that’s a testament to who he was then that he didn’t have to do a lot of growing up in the intervening decades.

Having spent many Octobers and early Novembers in NY State, Michigan, and Ontario (and having grown up in the western suburbs of Chicago), I can attest that the weather might be scarves-boots-and-mittens cold, or it might be why-did-I-pack-away-my-tank-tops-and-shorts-so-early? hot, or it might be I’ll-be-fine-with-a-sleeveless-dress-and-a-parka-for-later typical autumn day. I remember one year, back in the mid-’70s, when I left Flint, MI in 80°-something weather to spend a few days in Hamilton, ON and drove back in a blinding snow blizzard. (It was to celebrate my aunt’s birthday, so would have been days immediately surrounding October 18th.)

A nearby technical college has a two-year photography degree program. The continuing ed program I finished earlier this year was good for what it was, but I think it just gave me a better idea of how little I actually know, so I enrolled in the degree program, which I start in January.

Now I just have to relearn algebra in time for the placement exam in a couple of weeks. Haven’t studied the subject since I was 12 — I get the feeling the test results will leave me minoring in photography and majoring in remedial math. Gotta hit the books, and by “books” I mean Algebra for Dummies and every tutoring website I can find. Yay me. Also: ugh.

Bill Maher: ‘The Media Confuses Fair And Balanced With False Equivalency’
    MAHER
: I think the media, you know, has been going downhill for a long time with notable exceptions but I think one of the big problems is that they confuse fair and balanced with false equivalency, you know he’s not the same as Hillary Clinton. I mean Politico did a study of this of how much they lie. She lies about twenty-eight percent of the time somewhat or fully, which is about pretty good for politicians. He lies like eighty percent of the time. Like she lies less than most politicians; HE lies like more than anybody we’ve ever seen! He just says whatever comes into his head!……….

MAHER: ‘Fair and balanced,’they got that in their head, which they think means well I say this to this guy and I said exactly that to the other guy. But if one person is saying that the earth doesn’t revolve around the Sun, you know the answer is not to give that person equal weight with that. Also I mean, come on, the media is rooting for a close race.

In the mock elections, she was voted “sweetest girl” (she was captain of the cheerleading squad) and he was “cutest guy” (captain of the football team). Naturally, the two of them were Homecoming King and Queen. Just too stereotypical for words.

Well, they got married within a year or so of h.s. graduation, have many kids and grandkids, have never moved from the area, and are to all indications still very happily married after close to 55 years. You never know.

    @redshirt:
    From the NY Times

Clinton’s Fibs vs. Trump’s Huge Lies
…..One metric comes from independent fact-checking websites. As of Friday, PolitiFact had found 27 percent of Clinton’s statements that it had looked into were mostly false or worse, compared with 70 percent of Trump’s. It said 2 percent of Clinton’s statements it had reviewed were egregious “pants on fire” lies, compared with 19 percent of Trump’s. So Trump has nine times the share of flat-out lies as Clinton……

One is Clinton’s 2008 claim that she landed in Bosnia in 1996 “under sniper fire” and “ran with our heads down” from the plane. The Washington Post dismantled that claim; video shows that Clinton was greeted not by gunshots but by a crowd of dignitaries that included an 8-year-old Bosnian girl.
But it’s also true that as the plane prepared to descend, security officials gave a spine-chilling briefing of the risks of sniper fire, and Clinton wore body armor in case of shooting…..

In March, Politico chronicled a week of Trump remarks and found on average one misstatement every five minutes. The Huffington Post once chronicled 71 inaccuracies in an hourlong town hall session — more than one a minute…..

Likewise, The Washington Post Fact-Checker has awarded its worst ranking, Four Pinocchios, to 16 percent of Clinton’s statements that it checked and to 64 percent of Trump’s.

“Essentially, Clinton is in the norm for a typical politician,” says Glenn Kessler, who runs Fact-Checker, while Trump “is just off the charts. There’s never been anyone like him, at least in the six years I have been doing this.”

WASHINGTON (AP) — Mike Pence said Sunday he and Donald Trump will abide by “the will of the American people” on Election Day, and suggested that Trump’s claim of a ‘rigged” election stems from his belief the media is ganging up on him.

“We will absolutely accept the results of the election,” Pence said in television interviews. He said Trump’s complaint, articulated from the campaign stage and across Twitter but without evidence, reflects fatigue with “the obvious bias in the national media. That’s where the sense of a rigged election goes here.”

Not long after Pence said that, Trump partly undermined his comments.

“The election is absolutely being rigged by the dishonest and distorted media pushing Crooked Hillary – but also at many polling places,” Trump tweeted. “SAD.”

Just lucky. The mice are thanks for being friendly, or at least not hostile, to the cat. Perhaps, given the good start, you could tame the feral, creating a pleasant companion for chilly nights.

One of our cats was poorly socialized, an alley cat from downtown West Side. After we let him out of the cardboard box he came in, he ran into the basement and disappeared for – well, weeks. We knew he was down there, as the food was going away, and the litter box was being used, although that could have been the existing cats in the family.

While he was AWOL in our basement we named him Harvey, for the invisible poobah giant rabbit in the Jimmy Stewart movie. He was always a skinny orange kitty, but became very affectionate over the years. I’m so glad he had a happy life with us.

They’re a good weight and they really hold the heat in well. They are machine-washable, which is awesome for a wool blanket. I’ve been washing ours today in preparation for going on the beds soon.
