Balloon Juice

Come for the politics, stay for the snark.

I would try pessimism, but it probably wouldn’t work.

The real work of an opposition party is to hold the people in power accountable.

They traffic in fear. it is their only currency. if we are fearful, they are winning.

Not rolling over. fuck you, make me.

It’s always darkest before the other shoe drops.

Something needs to be done about our bogus SCOTUS.

Republicans got rid of McCarthy. Democrats chose not to save him.

Not so fun when the rabbit gets the gun, is it?

The line between political reporting and fan fiction continues to blur.

Quote tweet friends, screenshot enemies.

They punch you in the face and then start crying because their fist hurts.

Our job is not to persuade republicans but to defeat them.

This really is a full service blog.

The most dangerous place for a black man in America is in a white man’s imagination.

Let’s bury these fuckers at the polls 2 years from now.

A sufficient plurality of insane, greedy people can tank any democratic system ever devised, apparently.

This country desperately needs a functioning fourth estate.

You come for women, you’re gonna get your ass kicked.

Polls are now a reliable indicator of what corporate Republicans want us to think.

Oh FFS you might as well trust a 6-year-old with a flamethrower.

You don’t get rid of your umbrella while it’s still raining.

Sometimes the world just tells you your cat is here.

Every decision we make has lots of baggage with it, known or unknown.

Hell hath no fury like a farmer bankrupted.

Well, we survived the first day…notice that gate is not attached to anything.  Love Danes, they generally respect boundaries, no matter how temporary they might be.

bixby-and-bailey-10-17-16-1

They’re doing pretty well together. I didn’t want to turn this into my own personal pet diary – you can read more about them here if you are so inclined. But I thought the photos of them getting along so well would be enough to ease us into the week. One day down.

Open thread.

We went away for the weekend and I managed to overdo it with my cold, because now I’m totally sacked out on the couch. I didn’t even have the energy to track down the Broadway for Hillary broadcast. Maybe tomorrow.

Unless I’m hallucinating, Bailey seems almost as large as Bixby, despite the age difference.

    @schrodinger’s cat:

I walked way more than I should have and probably drank more alcohol than was strictly good for me. I’m pretty close to being a non-drinker, so the fact that I had 1 drink per day (and 2 on Saturday!) was kind of a big deal for me. But it was still fun and good for us to have a weekend away together.

It didn’t help that I slept really poorly both nights, probably because I’m still pretty congested from the cold.

My mom had a Dane she hoped to show. I and my two brothers used to ride him around like a horse. I guess we drove him nuts, because he found a better forever home after about a year.

@debbie: I haven’t weighed her yet, but she can’t be 100lbs yet. She won’t be as heavy as he is, but she might just be taller. She’s an American Dane and he’s a Euro Dane – little shorter and bigger chest – she’s taller and leaner.

You can really see how they are (ancient) Mastiff/Greyhound cross when you see them together, he leans toward the Mastiff side of the equation, she leans toward the Greyhound side of the family.

So I’m going to a writing conference in March and I’ve managed to back myself into a corner by saying I’ll have a manuscript ready by then for editors and agents to potentially see. A 100,000 word manuscript.

    Yikes.

(It’s not as bad as it first sounds — I have about 10K words written and a pretty complete outline. Still, it’s intimidating to know that I have an actual deadline.)

@Adam L Silverman: As long as you’re prepared to deal with the grooming requirements! Can’t speak to Tibetan Mastiffs particularly, but ‘spitz type’ (or ‘northern’) dogs usually have dense double coats that need regular attention. Whatever the breed books may claim, they do shed year-round, and still retain enough to make the annual spring molt a real spectacle… I have seen a Malamute owner remove a grocery sack worth of loose fur within a few minutes, and that was after several similar comb-outs.

On the other hand, if you’ve ever wanted to spin your own wool, I’m told spitz hair is a prime commodity…

Do not understand the tech reason for this and can see other pics on this blog now and have seen TaMara’s pics and videos in the past.
