Balloon Juice

Come for the politics, stay for the snark.

Only Democrats have agency, apparently.

One of our two political parties is a cult whose leader admires Vladimir Putin.

Donald Trump, welcome to your everything, everywhere, all at once.

Prediction: the gop will rethink its strategy of boycotting future committees.

Narcissists are always shocked to discover other people have agency.

The choice is between normal and crazy.

White supremacy is terrorism.

Not so fun when the rabbit gets the gun, is it?

Israel is using food as a weapon of war. Unforgivable.

Speaking of republicans, is there a way for a political party to declare intellectual bankruptcy?

Perhaps you mistook them for somebody who gives a damn.

An almost top 10,000 blog!

Putting aside our relentless self-interest because the moral imperative is crystal clear.

Why is it so hard for them to condemn hate?

If you tweet it in all caps, that makes it true!

Never entrust democracy to any process that requires republicans to act in good faith.

Baby steps, because the Republican Party is full of angry babies.

“Everybody’s entitled to be an idiot.”

“In the future, this lab will be a museum. don’t touch it.”

The fundamental promise of conservatism all over the world is a return to an idealized past that never existed.

Biden: Oh no. We’ve upset Big Pharma again.

Fuck these fucking interesting times.

There is one struggling party in US right now, and it’s not the Democrats.

It is possible to do the right thing without the promise of a cookie.

I’ve done a couple of these  so far. One dealing with that whacked out sentence in the rape case in California. One in regard to anti-Semites threatening a reporter on twitter.

Earlier today, during her interview with Anderson Cooper, Melania Trump indicated that if she becomes First Lady she intends to focus on combating the negativity on social media.

Melania Trump tells CNN she wants her focus as First Lady to be combating negativity on social media.

Hmm.

— Benjy Sarlin (@BenjySarlin) October 18, 2016

Perhaps she should ask her step son in law why this is unacceptable and then speak with her husband and ask him to publicly tell his supporters that this is unacceptable. And it cannot go unremarked.

This is a death threat by Trump supporters against Politico reporter @Hadas_Gold. This is not trolling. This person should be in jail: pic.twitter.com/jqykYWDkJA

— Michael Karanicolas (@M_Karanicolas) October 17, 2016

I do not know Ms. Gold, but she needs to know that others will stand up with and for her if necessary. And the same to anyone else who is being threatened like this on twitter and other social media platforms regardless of their ethnicity or religion or gender or sexuality.

Stuff like this is also why the owners of Twitter can’t get anyone to actually buy it.

Rachel had the editor or maybe the CEO of the Arizona Republic on tonight, who wrote an editorial about the people threatening her reporters and staff, all the way down to kids out trying to sell subscriptions. The big impetus for the editorial was a threat that included a reference to one of their papers reporters who was killed in a car bombing 40 years ago. So while the social media threats are scary, one never knows when they become real, between the fire bombing and vandalism in NC, and the 3 yahoos who wanted to blow up Somalis the day after the election, or the idiot saying he may become a “patriot” if Hillary wins, we have to take this shit seriously.

@Damien: I think we are going to see sporadic, low level political violence. Some of it will be stochastic terrorism directed at ethnic and religious minorities and anyone believed to not be supporting Trump (this is why I’m curious to see who is responsible for the NC firebombing). And the violence will include verbal threatening (making terroristic threats), actual physical violence, and crimes against property. I think there is a very high probability of sporadic violence on election day should, and I stress should, some Trump supporters take his advice and decide to make themselves poll watchers. I delineated how I thought that would go down yesterday. I think that should Trump lose, as is currently being predicted, even if its a blow out, he will not concede. He and his most vehement proxies are already establishing a proactive Dolchstoßlegende. This will place social, psychological, and emotional pressure on some of his supporters to actually strike out in an attempt to reverse things. How wide spread this will be, I do not know. I am also very concerned that on the more extremes, or, rather, where the extremes have seeped into more mainstream conservatism over the course of the campaign, that when some of these folks do not see the military and law enforcement act to overturn the election that they could become targets as well. The whole point of the Oathkeeper con that Stuart Rhodes is running is that current and former military and law enforcement will all stand with the “Patriots”. Well, when the “Patriots” don’t get the response they want from the military and law enforcement (outside some retirees and the CSPOA idiots like Sheriff Clarke), they will decide that they are traitors to their oaths and go after them as well. And because they’re in uniform and visible, that will make them easier targets.

That picture and tweet message is not only sick-making, it is profoundly shocking.

Occasionally in the past, I have expressed shock or surprise at some RWNJ outrage, and other commenters have said, in essence, “Don’t be shocked, they’ve shown their hand for years, this is who they are,” with the unspoken but clear message that I am just naïve if I’m shocked.

Well, I am shocked. And I always want to be shocked by things like this. I never want to get to the point where I expect it, or take it for granted, or shrug it off as “this is who they are.” It is unacceptable, unforgettable, and unforgivable.

The violent extremism of a minority of Trumpers is a serious issue. Trump isn’t going out of his way to condemn it, is he.
Sad and dangerous that this hasn’t been a bigger issue in the media.
I hope too many people don’t get hurt or killed before this mess is over.

Thing is, once this mindset gets going, nobody is safe, it all depends on who Trump is pissed off at on a given day.
Hispanics, anyone who looks vaguely ‘Muslin’ African-Americans, Jews and other minority groups will be the most likely targets.
But now that Trump had discovered a vast global conspiracy against him, it could be some old duffer named Floyd, veteran Establishment GOP poll watcher, and obvious secret agent of the Paul Ryan-HRC conspiracy against Trump who gets creamed.
You would think the celeb media news divas would take note, but they seem to be in their own little bubble.

Really disgusting and dangerous. Twitter certainly needs to hear about it from concerned citizens.

@Major Major Major Major: I don’t want to speculate because Trump has riled up his supporters against the GOP as an institution, as well as the Democrats and African Americans, Hispanic/Latino Americans, immigrants in America regardless of status, Muslim Americans, Asian Americans, and Jewish Americans. Also, all female Americans that are not, at least, an 8. Its important to note that two Democratic headquarters/offices in the same area were also vandalized the same night, just not firebombed.
    https://www.rawstory.com/2016/10/nc-democratic-headquarters-attacked-on-same-night-nearby-gop-office-was-firebombed/

But Orange County Democratic Party Chair Matt Hughes told Raw Story on Monday that vandals had also targeted his offices in Carrboro. Both attacks were said to have occurred early Sunday morning.

According to Hughes, staffers found the words “Death to Capitalism” scrawled on the OCDP headquarters when they came into work.

“There’s a chilling effect,” he explained. “We have staff and we have volunteers who work in that office… I’m one of those folks who sometimes works late into the night in a party office and you wonder about your safety when you look at things like what happened [to the GOP office] in Hillsborough or something like ‘Death to Capitalism.’ A lot of folks see that as a threat, not even a veiled threat.”

Hughes called the two incidents “a heck of a coincidence.”

“If they are connected, it is someone who adheres to a very-far-out-there political ideology,” he remarked.

If connected, the phrasing would certainly suggest your black bloc folks.

I’ve pretty much stopped listening to NPR, but I was driving today and turned the radio on. There was a segment about Trump’s claim that the election is rigged, with one Democrat and one Republican responding: the Republican was the head of the Florida Republican party who (among other things) ran the 2000 election Florida recount. He was ADAMANT, that NO, the U.S. election is not rigged, could not be rigged, there is no voter fraud of the sort that Donald Trump claims there is — he was clearly furious at the Trump camp’s claim, and pushing back against it as hard as he could. The Democrat was equally forceful, but I found the Republican impressive.

The only other person I’ve heard or heard about pushing back against Trump’s language is Peter King, who went on TV this morning to openly reject Trump’s language. Trump responded on Twitter, BTW:

Of course there is large scale voter fraud happening on and before election day. Why do Republican leaders deny what is going on? So naive!

The rest of the Republicans are staying conspicuously silent. And if there is violence such as you describe in #10 above, they will all be horrified, just horrified. They are all ratfuckers, every damned one of them.

More serious in intent and execution, utilizing surrealism (and also a touchstone of Latin American magical realism lit), would be Nobel winner Miguel Asturias’ fine, fine novel El Señor Presidente as a sort of bookend to Brecht. English translations ought to still be in print.

    @Eric U.:

twitter is saying that there is more oppo to drop that will kill Trump’s chances even more deader than they already are.

Twitter is full of optimists. The Big Scary Rumor, as far as I can tell, is that there’s a recording of Trump using the n-word, which Don swears he has never done.

I see two problems with that theory: One, while Trump has undoubtably expressed many ‘un-PC’ comments about people of color, that particular word is on the shortlist of Really Bad Swears even for people like Trump. Just as he’s said lots of horrible things about women, individually & collectively, without ever using the c-word, I suspect Trump (who is notoriously mealy-mouthed about ‘swearing’) has enough of an internal censor not to spout the n-word.

Second problem, of course, is that many of Trump’s supporters would actually applaud if he went there. It would shake loose the remaining “decent GOP voters”, but at this point, how many of those actually plan to vote for him?

I’m sure Hillary’s team has something planned for tomorrow, but I think it’ll be more like the Alicia Machado moment — putting out something relatively innocuous that will bait Trump into rage-storming and damaging himself in the present.

Almost nothing Trump says or said in the past matters any more. Anyone paying the slightest attention knows who and what Trump is. If they’re voting for him, it’s because they’ve rationalized away those things in favor of something else.

    Cheers,
    Scott.

using the ‘n’ word wouldn’t phase his supporters at all at this point. Just more anti-pc, telling it like it is talk from their hero. I have always suspected that he doesn’t use it much, he’s the sort of guy that goes for horribly racist stereotypes. And if that is the bombshell, he’ll blame it on rap lyrics.

I think the previous oppo that was supposed to sink him was all the women that had been groped. Didn’t actually fizzle, but didn’t peel off his supporters.

Alaska might go Democratic, in part due to Trump campaign mistakes?
TPM has it toss up with Trump +1.7,
Johnson and Stein seem to have a lot more support there than in other states, but they have been declining and most of their support seems to be going to Hillary.

And, I see in news that the Trump campaign managed to miss a deadline and his name won’t be in the state voter guide sent out to households.
    Cool.
I wonder what sinister global conspiracy pulled that off that dirty trick?

They do, indeed. On the other hand, violence against LEOs has become a sacrilegious act in the eyes of many Americans; you or I may feel that’s not sensible, but that’s an argument for a different arena, yes?

@Patricia Kayden: I don’t mind pitching in to rebuild an office; that’s just “sportsmanship”, as wacky as that notion is in this context. Any Republican who wants to come be a decent American with us is welcome, as far as I’m concerned, and I still believe there are some. I believe those people are wrong on some key issues, as it happens.

I have no intention of coddling bigots anymore, ever. And the “Trump voter” is a bigot. This idea that they’re all closet Sanders voters who are dying to enact a hardcore socialist political program is ridiculous. They’re bigots. They say so, often and loudly. And I hear them.

@Ian: That wasn’t the intention. Rather that given the (sort of) unique combination of pressures currently building within the socio-political space in the US, that uniformed military and law enforcement may become significant targets because their uniforms make them easily identifiable should they fail to conform to the fantasies that those who believe we need a revolution/rebellion have and the expectations they have for the military and law enforcement to either undertake this for them or to assist them with it.

    @Adam L Silverman:

That’s great to hear. I hope that attitude is common to all state and local police departments. While we do criticize these law enforcement orgs at times [ because like all human groups, they mess up at times, and even double down on the same mistake again, sometimes ] they really do usually perform as needed in times of crisis.

There are exceptions, but they are exceptions, which is a good thing.

And thanks for your analytical reports on this kind of thing! It helps those of us who really should have a xanax script for this kind of long drawn out affair out a good bit.
