Balloon Juice

Come for the politics, stay for the snark.

Trump’s cabinet: like a magic 8 ball that only gives wrong answers.

The lights are all blinking red.

Prediction: the gop will rethink its strategy of boycotting future committees.

The unpunished coup was a training exercise.

One way or another, he’s a liar.

We know you aren’t a Democrat but since you seem confused let me help you.

It’s a good piece. click on over. but then come back!!

Michigan is a great lesson for Dems everywhere: when you have power…use it!

Donald Trump found guilty as fuck – May 30, 2024!

Many life forms that would benefit from greater intelligence, sadly, do not have it.

“Can i answer the question? No you can not!”

Jack Smith: “Why did you start campaigning in the middle of my investigation?!”

A sufficient plurality of insane, greedy people can tank any democratic system ever devised, apparently.

“Everybody’s entitled to be an idiot.”

Weird. Rome has an American Pope and America has a Russian President.

I like political parties that aren’t owned by foreign adversaries.

If you voted for Trump, you don’t get to speak about ethics, morals, or rule of law.

If you still can’t see these things even now, maybe politics isn’t your forte and you should stop writing about it.

When you’re in more danger from the IDF than from Russian shelling, that’s really bad.

Welcome to day five of every-bit-as-bad-as-you-thought-it-would-be.

The most dangerous place for a black man in America is in a white man’s imagination.

Bad people in a position to do bad things will do bad things because they are bad people. End of story.

Watching the Al Smith speeches, it looked like Trump got up and shook Hilz’ hand after her speech (off camera). It really struck me then what a child he is. He really doesn’t understand what damage he has done with his little ego trip. Hilz being the pro that she is will laugh and tell a self-deprecating joke and shake his hand, but he’s already roadkill as far as she’s concerned.

He reminisced fondly about attending the Al Smith dinner with his father when he was young. But he won’t be invited back.

@Taylor: It never happened. His dad was arrested in an anti-Catholic Klan rally when Smith was running for President
    http://www.politico.com/states/new-york/city-hall/story/2016/10/guess-whos-coming-to-the-al-smith-dinner-106394

While we can only speculate about what Trump would have said about Smith, we have a pretty good idea of what his father thought of him. The delightful Fred Trump was arrested during a Ku Klux Klan rally in Queens in 1927 when he and some hooded gentlemen of his acquaintance wished to make it known that they considered power and privilege to be reserved for Protestants only. It was bad enough that New York had elected a Catholic governor and that Board of Aldermen was filled with Catholics and Jews. But the newspapers were saying that Smith might be nominated for president the following year. And this was too much for the bigots.

As they did whatever it is that Klansmen do when they gather in solidarity, they also circulated fliers lamenting that “Liberty and Democracy have been trampled upon when native-born Protestant Americans dare to organize to protect one flag, the American flag; one school, the public school; and one language, the English language.” The flier was recitation of grievances sounding very much like the sort of thing you will hear on cable programs hosted, sadly, by men named O’Reilly and Hannity, or lines delivered at a Trump rally as a new generation of embattled true Americans fights off another influx of foreigners.

Smith had an answer for this kind of aggression: Himself. He said his rosaries and marched in the St. Patrick’s Day parade and refused to soften his hard city edges. But he was as much a patriot as his native-born critics. More so, in fact, because he told scowling men and women that their loathing of people like him was a violation of the nation’s ideals. At a hostile venue in Oklahoma in 1928, in a speech that was broadcast around the country on radio, Smith declared that such hatred was un-American.

We’ve been rotating Marines, Conventional Army, and Army Special Forces into the Philippines for 117 years to assist with the Moro-Filipino dispute. And by assist I mean sometimes fight and sometimes advise and sometimes mediate.

Given Duterte’s ideology and rhetoric, as well as its interesting for a mayor to be able to finance a campaign to jump from mayor to president, my guess is if you could track back Duterte’s funding you’d find it comes from the same place as the ultra-Nationalist, neo-Fascist parties in Europe: Putin.

And a good old fashioned happy-happy (NSFW, F-bomb) pop song by Lilly Allen which could have, but wasn’t, written with Donald & His Crew in mind.

@redshirt: Putin declared we were in a Cold War about a year or so ago. Almost no one here, as in the US, seems to have noticed.

@Adam L Silverman: he doesn’t really need funding. He was a national figure before. He’s also more closely tied into the Marcos side of the the oligarchy tree than he lets on. The fact that he pretended to run against the do nothing patronage system was a lie. He’s basically purging the friends and family of those aligned to the Aquino side of the oligarchy and replacing them with his own side, using “narcotics” as an excuse to to build up the forces that he’ll eventually turn on the political opposition. He’ll get away with it as long as he continues to target the poor.

I’m not certain what the response should be. The country does need investment. he does get things built, which has given him a certain level of “honesty” points in a country where a lot of the money to build things (especially things to help the poor) kind of disappears rather quickly and no one knows where it went and why nothing got built.

@piratedan: At the very least, retire them from MSNBC so I can watch it again. But, no, we liberals aren’t allowed to have our own cable outlet. I’ve long thought that the country would be in a better place if liberals dominated the broadcast and cable news outlets.

    Another Scott

    October 21, 2016 at 12:52 am

@Peale: Duterte’s about-face for the Philippines does seem to be startlingly fast and unexpected. Last year there was talk about the US Navy making big investments in Subic Bay again China must be pleased, and Putin as well, but I have to think that there is a huge domestic component to this that we in the US haven’t heard about yet.

Does he have the power to do this shift toward China on his own, or does the Parliament have a say?

It seems to be another illustration that things can change very quickly in international affairs and we need a competent executive and State Department (and a federal government with an actual sensible budget which funds things…) going forward.

    Thanks.

    Cheers,
    Scott.

@Another Scott: yep. I really don’t know what to expect next. He’s off to Japan next. We’ll see how committed he is to insulting countries that have invaded his country in the past. i don’t think he’s playing a game where he’s decided that he’ll make out better if he plays one power off the other. There’s nothing about him that says “shrewd”.
