Balloon Juice

Come for the politics, stay for the snark.

When do the post office & the dmv weigh in on the wuhan virus?

The GOP couldn’t organize an orgy in a whorehouse with a fist full of 50s.

Thanks to your bullshit, we are now under siege.

I see no possible difficulties whatsoever with this fool-proof plan.

Make the republican party small enough to drown in a bathtub.

🎶 Those boots were made for mockin’ 🎵

Usually wrong but never in doubt

Let’s delete this post and never speak of this again.

Everybody saw this coming.

I like you, you’re my kind of trouble.

Too often we hand the biggest microphones to the cynics and the critics who delight in declaring failure.

Seems like a complicated subject, have you tried yelling at it?

Why is it so hard for them to condemn hate?

Their freedom requires your slavery.

This has so much WTF written all over it that it is hard to comprehend.

Yeah, with this crowd one never knows.

My years-long effort to drive family and friends away has really paid off this year.

Accused of treason; bitches about the ratings. I am in awe.

Nancy smash is sick of your bullshit.

White supremacy is terrorism.

The poor and middle-class pay taxes, the rich pay accountants, the wealthy pay politicians.

… riddled with inexplicable and elementary errors of law and fact

And now I have baud making fun of me. this day can’t get worse.

Something needs to be done about our bogus SCOTUS.

A friend’s “babies”:

adorable

The dog’s name is Lucky, and he should be a dog model because he never takes a bad picture:

lucky

Well, almost never:

almostnever

He was on benadryl for allergies in the last shot so we won’t hold it against him.

So assuming we get a Blue Senate for Christmas and have a 9-member Supreme Court next year, how long will it be before someone starts denying Supreme Court decisions on the basis that they were decided by an illegitimate Court full of illegitimate Justices appointed by an illegitimate President and confirmed by an illegitimate Senate, products of a stolen election?

I know people whine about Supreme Court rulings all the time, but I think we could see a whole new level of sedition next year.

The invisible Trump voter is coming out of the closet at my library. A middle-aged white man came in yesterday worried that he hadn’t received his voter reg card and that he wouldn’t be able to vote. Never voted before. We looked up his registration (he is registered) and located his polling place. Today I had phone call from a white male “who hasn’t vote in a very long time” asking where the nearest polling place is.

@jl: I think there is a pattern, Trump goes easier on politicians who will totally brush him off, call him a joke. The Obamas will do that, though in subtle dignified ways. And Sanders has done that in very blunt ways (including repeated statements of future fact that Trump will not be next president), which probably accounts for light treatment besides fact Trump is trying to cage Sanders votes, and with almost no success. Reid is willing to punch Trump in the face (with facts and arguments) while laughing “watch me punch this clown in the face’.

One thing Trump cannot stand is being dismissed or ridiculed with little visible bother to the person dismissing or ridiculing him.

Edit: Trump has of course gone very hard against Obama, but more indirectly. At least I think so. Has Trump ever directly insulted Barack Obama like he has HRC or Warren? Would he do a ‘what a nasty woman’ on him, as in ‘what a dumb blah person’? Maybe I am wrong, but I don’t think Trump has ever gone up against Barack Obama that way.

I know this isn’t exactly an open thread, but I wanted to make a pitch for a House candidate who could use your support.

A friend recently recommended that I take a look at Christina Hartman, a non-profit consultant and international election observer who’s running in Pennsylvania’s 16th Congressional district in southeastern Pennsylvania. The 16th was represented by a Republican for 20 years, but the incumbent is retiring and this is now an open seat in a swing district. Obama narrowly won it in 2008, Clinton is currently leading Trump here, and Hartman is closing in fast on her Trump-supporting opponent. She just needs a little help to get across the finish line.

This is exactly the type of district we need to win if we’re going to retake the House. Knocking on some doors could make a real difference here, so Philly area folks, maybe think about canvassing the burbs or taking a day trip out to Amish country if you can. (I actually canvassed this district in 2008 and loved it.) For those of us who don’t live there, I hope you’ll think about sending Christina Hartman a contribution or possibly even adding her to the BJ ActBlue page. Small donations can make a huge difference in these races. Thank you!

Well hellooo, Kansas GOP. Nice gig you’ve got going there–job’s so easy you can let your freak flags fly.

The No. 3 Republican in the Kansas House called Adolf Hitler’s words “profound” in a Thursday Facebook post that she said was meant to criticize Planned Parenthood.

“Great quote from Hitler in the video,” Rep. Peggy Mast wrote in the post on her private page, which was accessed by the Wichita Eagle. “Please listen to it closely. His words are profound! Let’s start using discernment.”

Though Mast’s initial post did not include a link to any video, the Eagle reported that she later shared a link to an article from Christian blog JulieRoys.com that included video of anti-abortion activist Gianna Jessen testifying against Planned Parenthood at a congressional hearing. Jessen compared the healthcare provider’s techniques for getting its message out to those of the Nazi leader, saying they both used propaganda to falsely sway people to their side.

“The receptivity of the masses is very limited, their intelligence is small, but their power of forgetting is enormous. In consequence of these facts, all effective propaganda must be limited to a very few points and must harp on these in slogans until the last member of the public understands what you want him to understand by your slogan,” the Hitler quote reads.

@catclub: Neither person seemed very knowledgeable about the process. I had to stress to the person on the phone that he needed to go to his specific polling place. Given that he hasn’t voted in a “very long time” he may not be registered. I do think that there will be an increased turnout of non-college educated white men who haven’t voted before. It won’t be enough though.

But, yah, I don’t think it will be pretty at the polls on election day for a variety of reasons. I told both men that they could early vote starting Monday. Neither was interested.

From an enemy publication, but an interesting read in National Review about the abuse heaped on David French and his family by the alt-right, for opposing Donald Trump:

I distinctly remember the first time I saw a picture of my then-seven-year-old daughter’s face in a gas chamber. It was the evening of September 17, 2015. I had just posted a short item to the Corner calling out notorious Trump ally Ann Coulter for aping the white-nationalist language and rhetoric of the so-called alt-right. Within minutes, the tweets came flooding in. My youngest daughter is African American, adopted from Ethiopia, and in alt-right circles that’s an unforgivable sin. It’s called “race-cucking” or “raising the enemy.”

I saw images of my daughter’s face in gas chambers, with a smiling Trump in a Nazi uniform preparing to press a button and kill her. I saw her face photo-shopped into images of slaves. She was called a “niglet” and a “dindu.” The alt-right unleashed on my wife, Nancy, claiming that she had slept with black men while I was deployed to Iraq, and that I loved to watch while she had sex with “black bucks.” People sent her pornographic images of black men having sex with white women, with someone photoshopped to look like me, watching.

@Cacti: That column was so striking. His wife also has a column today in Wapo – What it’s like to experience the 2016 election as both a conservative and a sex abuse survivor:

When the Trump videotapes broke, I watched the news and Twitter feeds of prominent evangelicals to see justice be done. But what I saw was all-too-familiar and yet somehow still shocking. “This is how men talk,” one said. “Let him who is without sin cast the first stone,” another said another — who used to “focus on the family” and had never uttered that phrase to refer to any Democrat who ever walked the face of the earth.

It’s hard to describe the effect 2016 has had on sexual abuse survivors. I believed the men in my party when they shrugged off the constant liberal accusations of being anti-woman.

But Pope John Paul II’s words ring true: “Christ … assigns the dignity of every woman as a task to every man.” If that’s right, the men in my party, in my church, in my life have failed; they ask me to participate in overlooking the offense.

Trump has inflicted some fatal wounds on the right. Some of these people aren’t going to forgive and forget.

Tribalism overrides common sense, that’s how people can stand up and say family values are the most important thing to them today, and that Bill’s cheating is why they hate him, and then turn around and support Rudy and Trump, who flagrantly cheated on their multiple wives.

@Jack the Second: As long as we are making predictions, while the kind of nullification that you describe will be in the mix somewhere, I think the big trend over the next four years will be an accelerated differentiation between “Red state” and “Blue state” models of governance. In the “Red” states, we will see more punitive legislation and budgets aimed at hollowing out the cities, crippling the institutions of higher learning, and reducing the independence of the state-level judiciary. There may also be a new crop of Trump-ite, candidly authoritarian gubernatorial candidates.

It seems that there are some who are trying to tell themselves that Trump is really a good guy. Headlines read that he housed Jennifer Hudson free of charge in one of his hotels in the days after her family was murdered, and he sent one of his own private planes to rescue stranded Marines from somewhere.

Er, not to say that Lucky’s a corgi, because I can’t tell unless they’re taking a picture with the Queen. But he looks like he could be.

Earlier this year, I think around the time of her 90th birthday, the Queen announced that she would no longer be acquiring any new dogs. She is old enough that she didn’t want her dogs to outlive her, or leave them to others to cope with. A week or two ago, one of her two elderly corgis died, so she is now down to one corgi and two dorgis (dachshund-corgi mix). She’s had dogs non-stop since she was a little girl. Makes me sad to think that (a) she may end up dogless, or (b) outliving all her dogs might hasten her own demise.

@Cacti: this summer here on Ballon Juice we laughed at a story of a conservative deployed to Iraq who forbade his wife to go online or talk with any men. Turns out it was this guy and it was because both he and his wife are reporters who are anti Trump. They have been getting death threats and worse…..well. Reading that story, now I am not sure we should be so hard on the media for being slow to report strongly on Trump. Lots or reporters are dealing with really serious floods of hate.
We need stronger laws against threats over the Internet and law enforcement resources to catch effectively. I don’t have clear ideas yet how to do that without tyranny, but we have to figure it out.
