What? You can’t post Sportsball scores in a Sportsball thread? Why the heck not?
Also, what’s the score?
ArchPundit
Is Joe Buck going to cry?
ArchPundit
@redshirt: Exactly, how do you talk about the game without scores?
SiubhanDuinne
Not posting the score. I’ll just say I’m smiling.
ArchPundit
@SiubhanDuinne: Yuuuuuge smile
R-Jud
I became a White Sox fan at a dying friend’s request. He better not haunt me for cheering on the Cubs tonight.
redshirt
@SiubhanDuinne: Seriously, why not? For people DVR’ing the game?
Adam L Silverman
@ArchPundit: Only if there is a just Deity or Deities or Universe depending on one’s personal view of these things.
raven
If people don’t want to know the score they need to stay off this thread.
Adam L Silverman
@redshirt: Yep. I got a very politely worded nastygram. I tried to reply and apologize – it honestly didn’t even occur to me – and the email didn’t go through.
raven
@Adam L Silverman: Fuck em. it’s 2-0 Cubbies in the bottom of 2.
scav
@ArchPundit: Many of these threads seem to be random collections of “Waaaaa!” “Day-emn!” or “Can You Believe That!” or something along the lines of Left Hand Shoeless Humbernickle did it better in Ought-Six with his right hand if you believe Grandpa. (The last only in really dull games, to be fair. Good games go nearly all one-word comments, sometimes all slightly out of synch because of different media.
redshirt
@Adam L Silverman: That’s BS. It’s a playoff game, you’ve got a real time thread. If someone doesn’t want to know the results, don’t click the thread that’s very clearly about the game.
Seriously, I can’t watch. What’s the score? Cubs are up big I assume.
Adam L Silverman
@raven: I had posted it in the actual post as they were going into the 8th inning. But I understand why that could upset someone.
rikyrah
Cubs ????
ArchPundit
@scav: LOL–I may be down to sigh, shit, yes! in a few minutes given my nerves tonight. I’m on Sling which is slightly slow, but I don’t care if it gets spoiled by that amount of time–Twitter already does that.
raven
@Adam L Silverman: Xin Loi. I DVR games all the time and watch them in the morning. If I don’t want to know what happened I don’t logon anywhere.
Adam L Silverman
@raven: I will forward the emails to you good sir.
ArchPundit
@Adam L Silverman: That’s different–on the front page I agree
redshirt
@raven: Thanks. That’s not a very big lead, but a lead it is!
raven
All the soccer threads all summer discussed what was going on and, when there was a score, everyone knew it!
ArchPundit
@redshirt: 2-0 Top of the second. Kershaw already over 30 pitches. Given Kershaw pretty good start.
Adam L Silverman
@redshirt: I had posted it in the actual post, so that was, I think, a legit complaint.
raven
@redshirt: You bet it is, Kershaw throws heat, you gotta get to him early.
SiubhanDuinne
@rikyrah:
???♥️???
redshirt
@raven: Oh, yeah. How many days rest does Kershaw have?
raven
@Adam L Silverman: So you were explaining it not telling others not to?
Schlemazel
I don’t care! I am post the score, MN 2 OSU 1 for the weekend sweep
redshirt
@Adam L Silverman: Meh. The Board of Internet decrees you: NOT GUILTY.
Comrade Scrutinizer
That’s as crazy as people who scream “Spoilers!” at people who are discussing movie trailers. Swear to god, there are people who want spoiler warnings for the Wizard of Oz.
Adam L Silverman
@raven: My thoughts exactly. Run up the score as quickly as possible.
SiubhanDuinne
@Comrade Scrutinizer:
Spoiler Alert!! It was all a dream.

raven
@redshirt: He pitched a shutout Tuesday.
Poopyman
Heh! There was a tab over there on the right to a post titled “Love and Happiness”, but when I clicked on it I got a BJ error message “Nothing Found”.
Sad!
Adam L Silverman
@raven: Little of both.
Adam L Silverman
@Comrade Scrutinizer: The Winkies did it!
redshirt
@Poopyman: TaMara pulled her exquisitely timed Bigfoot.
redshirt
@raven: 3 days rest? That might be enough to make him mortal.
Poopyman
@SiubhanDuinne:
No, no, that was Season 7 of “Dallas”.
Adam L Silverman
@Poopyman: TaMara bigfooted (bigfeeted?) me and part of it was a Cubs V Dodgers open thread. Since I pulled the last one, I guess she pulled this one. There will be several sarcastic, teasing emails about bigfooting between us.
raven
@Adam L Silverman: Well, I’ve been here a long time and there is a big difference between posing into a thread a giving a score and being in a thread where a game, or set of games, is being played. Before Cole found better things to do there were always long College football threads on Saturday.
The Dangerman
While I’m kinda rooting for the Cubs, Kershaw does a LOT of charity stuff, so I hope it’s at least a good game. Not a good start for Dodgers and I kinda think their bullpen is burnt.
redshirt
Did y’all hear about Schilling’s Trump rally today at Boston City Hall?
LOL. Jackass.
ArchPundit
Cubs with lead off doubles in both innings
raven
@redshirt: And the Hawk is out at Wrigley. It’s 56 and that’s pretty cold for them surfers!
raven
@The Dangerman: MY entire family lives out there and my brother is and insane die-hard Dodger fan. I don’t give him much shit because he drives himself crazy enough.
jl
OK, no scores, but I heard on the news that the Cubs are leading in first downs.
Edit: oops, no, the Dodgers have some field goals.
Never mind, What sport is this again?
Adam L Silverman
@raven: I will amend the post.
redshirt
@jl: They’ve scored a hoop and a goal!
Woodrowfan
I so want a Cubs-Indians World Series so fans of at least one of those teams will finally get a World Series winner…

Meanwhile this damn Auburn game is out of control with 11 minutes to go and the LSU Ol Miss game is supposed to start in 5 minutes on the same channel.
Downpuppy
Buckeyes finally take a lead on the Shorteyes.
The Big 10 needs to lose some teams.
Adam L Silverman
@redshirt: Did anyone ever figure out how many times he was hit in the head with line drives back to the pitcher’s mound?
raven
@Adam L Silverman: Oh man, I’m not giving you a hard time. Leave it, it’s no big deal. I just figured if I posted it no now could say shit to you.
jl
@redshirt: Let these crazy people live out their little fantasies. Go Giants! It’s an even year!
ArchPundit
@Woodrowfan: Cleveland last won in 1948. They can wait.
Adam L Silverman
@raven: I know you’re not, but this way everyone is on the same page.
ArchPundit
@redshirt: 6 Days–it was last Sunday he threw. And YESSSS! Have to be watching to understand that part
SiubhanDuinne
@Woodrowfan:
I was hoping for Cubs-Jays (because of my many Canadian connections), but will be happy enough to see Chicago defeat Cleveland. My Braves did it in ’95, the Cubs can do it this year.
redshirt
@jl: The New York Football Giants?! Everyone hates them now. For good reason.
SiubhanDuinne
@ArchPundit:
Exactly. Let’s not be pushy. Wait your damn turn.
Gravenstone
Always love these med commercials. “Don’t use our product if you’re allergic to it.” Gee, ya think?

SiubhanDuinne
@raven:
Thank goo’ness for This Old House renovation threads, right?
raven
@Gravenstone: They have really ramped up the anti-Hillary ads on football.
raven
@SiubhanDuinne: It’s been a couple of years really.
SiubhanDuinne
@Steve in the ATL:
Ha! I wrote and then deleted a sentence about Dallas because I didn’t feel like looking up what season it was.
ArchPundit
@raven: It’s just more surprising he seems mortal now
Woodrowfan
@ArchPundit: I prefer the Cubs this time as well, but either way it’s not going to be a fan base that has recent series wins they’re still savoring…
SiubhanDuinne
@raven:
I’ll cheerfully take your word for it. Not a football fan so have always kind of skimmed through or past the f-ball threads. Don’t judge me.
ArchPundit
@raven: Surprised they aren’t doing the face meld into Kaepernick
jl
@redshirt: It’s an even year. That means that the Giants win. It’s fate. Been an even year all year long. No one can change that.
If it takes the Cubs to destroy, crush and obliterate the fount of all evil, the D%!$#!!@dg*^%!!$@!rs, then so be it, But the Giants will win in the end.
redshirt
@raven: Good. Don’t let them back in the country.
ArchPundit
@The Dangerman: I have no personal grudge against Kershaw–only Joe Buck’s unnatural feelings for him.
raven
@SiubhanDuinne: Not at all, he just seems to have lost interest. The Errs had a huge game today and there wasn’t a peep from him. When I quit drinking I bailed on football for a year for so. It’s not always easy to do something that you associate with booze for so long. That may no be where John is but the blog has certainly changed.
ArchPundit
@redshirt: I’m worried though–is he gonna burn out to quickly and not give us a full campaign of nonsense.
Amir Khalid
@SiubhanDuinne:
It was season 5, the notorious “season that never was”. (Dallas was a big hit in Malaysia.)
hueyplong
@jl: I agree, except that I don’t share your measured calm on the issue.
Adam L Silverman
@raven: Or the new house may have eaten him. We are talking about Cole after all.
jl
@hueyplong: Yes, for an SF Giants fan, that is measured calm. Some here suspect that I am a spy.. some…. call me traitor. I did live in Los Angeles for a while.
Edit and I forgot: EVEN YEAR!
Amazing how often I heard that as an argument that the Giants would win… even after the post All Star bust, even, lo, into their short stint in the playoffs.
redshirt
@ArchPundit: Don’t worry. Schill doesn’t see reality like you and I. I’m sure today’s “rally” was a disaster because of some rigged rigging.
redshirt
@jl: It did hold for a while, and you had no business winning those previous WS’s, so why not this year too?
jl
@redshirt: Get thee behind me. Satan.
The Dangerman
@ArchPundit: Joe Buck wouldn’t be anyplace near an announcing booth except for his Father (who was great).
SFAW
Do the Mets still have a chance this year?

@raven:

redshirt
@Amir Khalid: That’s funny. How about “Falcon Crest”?
raven
@Adam L Silverman: Right but what I am saying is that the change came way before the house.
hueyplong
@jl: Had the bullpen not blown up in game 4, I fully expected Cueto to win game 5 in Chicago.
Problem is, the bullpen would have beaten them at one point or another, and it would have been awful for SF’s bullpen to punch LA’s ticket to a World Series.
SiubhanDuinne
@Amir Khalid:
Thanks. I never actually watched it, although it would have been impossible to escape the overhyped coverage, so I was well aware of the narrative arcs. The “who killed J.R.?” cliffhanger was especially notable for sucking up a summer’s worth of oxygen.
ArchPundit
@The Dangerman: I lived in Saint Louis for 18 years and I am so done with him (and yes, 18 years in Saint Louis as a Cubs fan). His father was a great announcer, but a wingnut’s wingnut.
raven
@ArchPundit: Brickhouse was way more the Cubbie announcer than Harry.
eta Oh, Buck not Harry, my bad.
Hungry Joe
Sad year for this NL fan who dislikes both the Dodgers (I’m a San Diegan) and the Cubs (1. Owners are right-wing assholes; 2. I dunno — just sick of Cubbie talk). My antipathy for both teams outweighs my disdain for the AL and its DH blasphemy, so I gotta pull (half-heartedly) for the Indians.
SiubhanDuinne
@raven:
Sobriety, I’m guessing.
(EDIT: As you pointed out in a comment I had overlooked.)
The Dangerman
@hueyplong: I believe Cueto wins Game 5, too. The Cubs numbers when facing him were terrible.
The Giants bullpen was approaching performance art; they tied the record for blown 9th inning leads in September.
ETA: I think it was 6, which is damn hard to do.
Adam L Silverman
@raven: Gotcha.

@jl:
My 10 year old has instructed me to record it because it is Sunday, he needs to both sleep in and watch his Giants. They better not lay an egg or he’ll be miserable all day. Go Big Blue!
ArchPundit
@raven: I loved both, but Brickhouse was always the classic. Harry was great until the last few years when he just couldn’t follow the games. He was the Cards announcer in the 1960s until he had that affair with Busch’s wife.
raven
@SiubhanDuinne: And he never really engaged anyway, he just put the threads up.
redshirt
@Hungry Joe: There’s nothing to hate on this Cleveland team, except of course their racist mascot and team name.

Tell us about the Jews, Curt — we all want to hear your valuable insights on that stuff. Especially if you tell us that “work sets you free, baby.”

And the rich get richer: I just read that if they get to the World Series, it’s possible that Kyle Schwarber will DH in the games at Cleveland. They’ve already activated him from the 60-day DL and he’s playing in the Arizona Fall League to knock the rust off. If he does play this year, it will be something of a medical miracle, given that he went down in the second game of the season with a torn ACL and LCL.

Dynasty was also popular here, although Falcon Crest and Dallas spin-off Knots Landing were second-tier in the prime-time soap ratings.
@SiubhanDuinne: It was “Who shot JR?”, actually. JR was seriously but not fatally wounded at the end of season 2. As I recall, the shooter turned out to be Bing Crosby’s daughter.
SiubhanDuinne
@raven:
I think you’re right about that. As mentioned, since I’m not really a football fan, I tended to skip, or at least just skim, those threads. I know John is an Eers and Steelers fan, but beyond that I’m not very aware. And I think that when that guy, Rothlensberger or whatever his name is, was charged with sexual assault or something a few seasons back, John kind of soured on the whole thing. But again, I’ve never followed that closely.

@redshirt: Please, I beg of you — you have to leave me SOMETHING. It’s the goddam World Series, and the last time I rooted against both teams (Dodgers v. And Howard Cosell was announcing for ABC, which pushed the experience into the realm of torture until I remembered I was within range of Vin Scully on the radio.

@raven: he could be pretty funny though. Used to hang out with his daughter in Athens. One of my friends, uh, “dated” her from time to time

@Adam L Silverman: Well, we should all know by now that WoZ was really a subversive piece on the terrorism of Glinda, The “Good Witch”. She brings Dorothy to Oz, and by doing so kills the Wicked Witch of the East (aka one of her competitors). She immediately sets up a feud between Dorothy and the Wicked Witch of the West by zapping the ruby slippers onto Dorothy’s feet and casting a spell to prevent them from being removed.
Then she sends (points) Dorothy to Oz, where the Wizard also attempts to use Dorothy for his own ends, but it horribly backfires and he’s forced to flee.
So by the end of the movie, Dorothy has destroyed all the existing power bases in Oz, except for Glinda’s of course. And then, and only then, does Glinda provide a way for Dorothy to leave Oz, leaving Glinda the unchallenged ruler of Oz.

raven
@Kristine Smith: I’m on the Dish.
raven
@Adam L Silverman: No, I mean I got that ad almost 5 minutes after you did.
ArchPundit
@Adam L Silverman: Local cable buys are most common, but for DirectTV they don’t have locals so the advertising they get from channels is available for purchase so it could be a national buy through FS1 or DirectTV
Steve in the ATL

Watching the game on FS1 (DirecTV) as well: saw the Prop 61 ad (irrelevant cause we’re in Western MA) – fortunately missed the Trump crap…
Excellent job by Hendricks tonight.
ArchPundit
@efgoldman: Not defending them because I think it’s probably more about saying they ran so many units to their donors. Some, okay, many of the SuperPACs are scams to donors. But also, it is a Dodgers game so targeting for California not totally crazy.
redshirt
@Adam L Silverman: So I guess that makes Barney Toto.
Adam L Silverman
@raven: Ahh, okay. Now I’m tracking.
M. Bouffant
Wow. That Prop. 61 ad was the first one in the commercial break, too. Not usual placement for a local advert.
Also got a (different) Prop. 61 ad at the end of the break; might have been local. Maybe the kids in the FS1 control room are not paying attention.
On the other hand, the local ads should come from the local cable provider, not FS1, & it’s obviously from FS1 if both sat. & cable viewers saw it.

@Adam L Silverman: I always thought the cable/satellite providers tailored the ads to the local audience. I guess I was wrong.
It depends on the buy. If you buy a national ad from TNT, it goes national. Given that Cali include
34 major metros (counting SFO as one) the national ad buy rates may have been cheaper and easier to deploy than buying ads targets to specific areas (i.e. purchasing local or regional ads from various cable providers/TNT). It’s like running a detergent ad. Given that lots of Californians travel as well, getting a better bang for the buck from a national ad also adds the nice bonus of playing to traveling voters.Lot of that kind of advertising has been going on this year. Clinton campaign was doing it during the Olympics.

@raven: Hate it all you want, but when 42,000+ fans are singing it, it’s a party!
Steve in the ATL
@SiubhanDuinne: a bunch of Westsiders here! That’s cool, as long you are cubs and not sox.
Mnemosyne
@SiubhanDuinne:
G rebelled against his upbringing and became a Sox fan, so he is unimpressed. :-)

@SiubhanDuinne: What’s amazing about droughts like this is there have been many generations of family members who’ve lived through losing. 4? 5 generations? And there’s so many memories and stories associated with the team, even if you’re not a big fan yourself, that it becomes quite emotional to think about.
Like, how painful it is for me that much of my older family members are freaking Yankee fans. Giants fans too. :(
Steve in the ATL
@raven: has everyone forgotten manny trillo and Ivan deJesus?
SiubhanDuinne
@raven:
One of my good friends is a lifelong Red Sox fan whose dad died the very day Boston won the WS in 2004.
My mother died in 1975 the day after I was notified I had been hired for a dream job.
Sweet and bitter, bitter and sweet.
raven
@Kristine Smith: Yup
redshirt
@patroclus: I hope Bartman is forgiven, and soon. Bartman did nothing wrong.
redshirt
@SiubhanDuinne: Do you know if he knew the Sox won before dying?
patroclus
@raven: And Mark Grace and Shawon and Dernier and Moreland and Greggie Poo and the Penguin and Kessinger and Charlie Root and even John Paul Stevens!
SiubhanDuinne
@Mnemosyne:
A traitor to his tribe! To the ice floes!!
satby
Aww nice! I’m a born and bred Southsider, but my oldest son is and my dearly departed grandmother was a dedicated Cub fan. She’s smiling tonight somewhere in the stars.
SiubhanDuinne
@redshirt:
I don’t know, and I suspect the outcome of the game wasn’t uppermost in his mind. Don’t think he really cared — it’s his daughter who is, and was, the Sox fan.
rikyrah
Two of my mother’s favorite words were SPRING TRAINING. She and my father loved baseball. They would have loved this team.
raven
@Steve in the ATL: When Kingman came to the plate the played the theme for Exodus! And then there was Pat Piper!
SiubhanDuinne
@Steve in the ATL:
Born in West Suburban Hospital :-)
Steve in the ATL
@patroclus: a true cubs fan even remembers Gary Scott’s grand slam–that’s pretty obscure but it was awesome
raven
@patroclus: Zonk!
SiubhanDuinne
@satby:
Our grandmothers are both probably hanging out together rejoicing in this moment :-)
raven
Still on my wall.
satby
@SiubhanDuinne: whoa, we had the same grandma?
satby
@satby: lol, yes, you beat me to it?
patroclus
This is really a gigantic national story! And, uh, before she moved away, the Cubbies were Hillary’s team!
Mnemosyne
@Steve in the ATL:
I was at Wrigley Field the day of the Immaculate Deflection.
You couldn’t really see anything from the stands, though, since it went by so fast. But I was there!
Temporarily Max McGee (Soon Enough to Be Andy K Again)
@Steve in the ATL:
How about the Reuschel brothers?
redshirt
@rikyrah: In Boston we call that “Pitchers and Catchers” aka the day the pitchers and catchers first appear in the Spring. There’s also “Truck Day” when moving trucks take all the stuff from Fenway to Florida. That’s always a great sign that Spring is at hand.
Steve in the ATL
@Mnemosyne: nice!
Steve in the ATL
@Temporarily Max McGee (Soon Enough to Be Andy K Again):yes! And sutcliffe and sutter
patroclus
The Indians will be tough to beat – and they’ve got their own history working for them too. It’ll be a great Fall Classic in Wrigleyville!
Temporarily Max McGee (Soon Enough to Be Andy K Again)
@Steve in the ATL:
Leon “The Bull” Durham. Rick Monday.
Those Cubs from the ’70s and early ’80s don’t come back to me as quickly as the Tigers do, but it’s close. Had the Cubs won the pennant in ’84, I would have gone insane.
satby
And probably the happiest fan in the stars tonight is Steve.
He passed away just before they took the pennant in 84 too. Used to hang out at Earl’s to watch him and the other folkies play.
Mnemosyne
@satby:
Ahem. They lost the pennant in 1984. I have the scars to prove it.

Gravenstone
@Steve in the ATL: The crowd chanting his name was a nice touch. Shame he got overwhelmed by the expectations
satby
@Mnemosyne: like I said, Southsider. And in 1984, humongously pregnant with #2 son, wasn’t really paying attention. Faulty memory.. I must have remembered them getting into the playoffs as winning them.
And the link was supposed to be to the YouTube of Goodman, but is to the search results. Time for me to go to sleep. Night all.
Steve in the ATL
@Gravenstone: indeed–another can’t miss prospect who missed.
As I recall, Harry called it “the greatest at bat in Cubs history!” and you know he was never one for hyperbole
EriktheRed
Somebody here said “Cuck the Fubs” a few days ago.
Wonder if she’s here now….
EriktheRed
@patroclus: Larry Bowa.
Mnemosyne
@satby:
Goodman covered the whole fan spectrum, because he also wrote this.
Note: If you knew him, the video might be a little upsetting, because it was filmed a few months (possibly a few weeks) before he died, though he’s still in very good voice and good spirits.

@raven: Damn, I remember that song very well, back in the days of radio announcers Vince Lloyd and Lou Boudreau. Who announced for the 69 Cubs and their hard hatted bleacher bums. The 69′ Cubs were great, but Durocher ground them down by not giving rest. And day baseball in August sapped the life out of them.
I was living in Chicago in 84 when basically the same thing happened. Although they had the best National League record. San Diego got the home field advantage because the networks wanted prime time (night) baseball. They won the first two games easily, had to fly to San Diego and play the next day. San Diego swept them at home.
Everybody in this group knows about 2003, the Bartman game. So I won’t go into that.
The strangest thing about tonight’s game was how easy it was. I’m sure I was not alone about waiting for the other shoe to drop, but it never did. I almost jumped out of my skin when Rizzo yelled, we’re going to the world series! Some part of me thought that I would ever hear those words yelled by a Cub. So awesome!
jackmac
White Sox fan here who was at tonight’s Cubs-Dodgers game. Fun game to watch, that Cubs team seems like a bunch of likeable, decent guys and Joe Maddon is top-notch. I want Cubs fans to feel the same joy we Sox fans felt with our World Series title in ’05. So don’t let your fans down, finish the job.

“I’ve been informed I’m a bad, bad person for posting the score in the post the other day, so I won’t be doing that again.”
not posting scores won’t save you. You are still a bad person.
raven
@AnotherBruce: I came home from Vietnam in September and I have very little memory of the collapse. I was just getting my feet under me.
Gemina13
Took the SO out for the best steamers to be found in WA (Wally’s Broiler); 1 1/2 pounds of sweet Manila clams in a delicious garlicky broth, each, with mozzarella sticks, 2 cups of clam chowder, and garlic cheese bread to mop up all that broth. We were going to have ice cream afterward, but we were too stuffed to even consider it.
We got home and found the Cubs had won, and I’m glancing up at the ceiling wondering when the meteor’s going to strike. Holy shit. My mom is out there somewhere muttering, “You bastards couldn’t do it while I still cared, could you . . .”
Congratulations, Cubs. Next year finally arrived. :)
