Balloon Juice

Come for the politics, stay for the snark.

Let us savor the impending downfall of lawless scoundrels who richly deserve the trouble barreling their way.

Republicans can’t even be trusted with their own money.

It’s easy to sit in safety and prescribe what other people should be doing.

fuckem (in honor of the late great efgoldman)

This blog will pay for itself.

Schmidt just says fuck it, opens a tea shop.

This isn’t Democrats spending madly. This is government catching up.

Technically true, but collectively nonsense

Balloon Juice has never been a refuge for the linguistically delicate.

Putting aside our relentless self-interest because the moral imperative is crystal clear.

The party of Reagan has become the party of Putin.

The GOP couldn’t organize an orgy in a whorehouse with a fist full of 50s.

Just because you believe it, that doesn’t make it true.

Putin must be throwing ketchup at the walls.

Ah, the different things are different argument.

We’re not going back!

Stamping your little feets and demanding that they see how important you are? Not working anymore.

Their freedom requires your slavery.

I like you, you’re my kind of trouble.

It’s all just conspiracy shit beamed down from the mothership.

But frankly mr. cole, I’ll be happier when you get back to telling us to go fuck ourselves.

No one could have predicted…

Second rate reporter says what?

In after Baud. Damn.

Sportsball Open Thread. I’ve been informed I’m a bad, bad person for posting the score in the post the other day, so I won’t be doing that again. ?

What? You can’t post Sportsball scores in a Sportsball thread? Why the heck not?

    Also, what’s the score?

They’ve already activated him from the 60-day DL and he’s playing in the Arizona Fall League to knock the rust off. If he does play this year, it will be something of a medical miracle, given that he went down in the second game of the season with a torn ACL and LCL.

She brings Dorothy to Oz, and by doing so kills the Wicked Witch of the East (aka one of her competitors). She immediately sets up a feud between Dorothy and the Wicked Witch of the West by zapping the ruby slippers onto Dorothy’s feet and casting a spell to prevent them from being removed.

Then she sends (points) Dorothy to Oz, where the Wizard also attempts to use Dorothy for his own ends, but it horribly backfires and he’s forced to flee.

So by the end of the movie, Dorothy has destroyed all the existing power bases in Oz, except for Glinda’s of course. And then, and only then, does Glinda provide a way for Dorothy to leave Oz, leaving Glinda the unchallenged ruler of Oz.

@Adam L Silverman: I always thought the cable/satellite providers tailored the ads to the local audience. I guess I was wrong.

It depends on the buy. If you buy a national ad from TNT, it goes national. Given that Cali include 3 4 major metros (counting SFO as one) the national ad buy rates may have been cheaper and easier to deploy than buying ads targets to specific areas (i.e. purchasing local or regional ads from various cable providers/TNT). It’s like running a detergent ad. Given that lots of Californians travel as well, getting a better bang for the buck from a national ad also adds the nice bonus of playing to traveling voters.

Lot of that kind of advertising has been going on this year. Clinton campaign was doing it during the Olympics.

And there’s so many memories and stories associated with the team, even if you’re not a big fan yourself, that it becomes quite emotional to think about.

@raven: Damn, I remember that song very well, back in the days of radio announcers Vince Lloyd and Lou Boudreau. Who announced for the 69 Cubs and their hard hatted bleacher bums. The 69′ Cubs were great, but Durocher ground them down by not giving rest. And day baseball in August sapped the life out of them.

I was living in Chicago in 84 when basically the same thing happened. Although they had the best National League record. San Diego got the home field advantage because the networks wanted prime time (night) baseball. They won the first two games easily, had to fly to San Diego and play the next day. San Diego swept them at home.

Everybody in this group knows about 2003, the Bartman game. So I won’t go into that.

The strangest thing about tonight’s game was how easy it was. I’m sure I was not alone about waiting for the other shoe to drop, but it never did. I almost jumped out of my skin when Rizzo yelled, we’re going to the world series! Some part of me thought that I would ever hear those words yelled by a Cub. So awesome!

Took the SO out for the best steamers to be found in WA (Wally’s Broiler); 1 1/2 pounds of sweet Manila clams in a delicious garlicky broth, each, with mozzarella sticks, 2 cups of clam chowder, and garlic cheese bread to mop up all that broth. We were going to have ice cream afterward, but we were too stuffed to even consider it.

We got home and found the Cubs had won, and I’m glancing up at the ceiling wondering when the meteor’s going to strike. Holy shit. My mom is out there somewhere muttering, “You bastards couldn’t do it while I still cared, could you . . .”

Congratulations, Cubs. Next year finally arrived. :)
