Balloon Juice

Come for the politics, stay for the snark.

Republicans choose power over democracy, every day.

They traffic in fear. it is their only currency. if we are fearful, they are winning.

Republicans don’t trust women.

He wakes up lying, and he lies all day.

I’ve spoken to my cat about this, but it doesn’t seem to do any good.

The arc of the moral universe doesn’t bend itself. it’s up to us.

Ah, the different things are different argument.

Republicans don’t want a speaker to lead them; they want a hostage.

Today’s gop: why go just far enough when too far is right there?

I’m just a talker, trying to find a channel!

No offense, but this thread hasn’t been about you for quite a while.

We’ll be taking my thoughts and prayers to the ballot box.

We’re not going back!

Wow, I can’t imagine what it was like to comment in morse code.

When we show up, we win.

Fuck these fucking interesting times.

Stop using mental illness to avoid talking about armed white supremacy.

“And when the Committee says to “report your income,” that could mean anything!

It’s easy to sit in safety and prescribe what other people should be doing.

Pessimism assures that nothing of any importance will change.

I’m more Christian than these people and I’m an atheist.

He imagines himself as The Big Bad, Who Is Universally Feared… instead of The Big Jagoff, Who Is Universally Mocked.

Meanwhile over at truth Social, the former president is busy confessing to crimes.

We still have time to mess this up!

Saturday Afternoon Open Thread

I’m road-tripping today (local travel only — Deplorables Country if the signage is any indication), but it looks like we could use an open thread.

Here’s a photo I took the other day. That’s St. Pete on the horizon.

img_0901

The Gators have a bye week, so I’m not paying enough attention to college football to even be sure who else is playing today. Any good matchups?

What else is going on?

When estimating his net worth, Pepe the Cheeto is apt to include a multibillion dollar valuation for the “Trump” brand-name; but new Trump Hotels will be called “Scion” hotels, “a nod to the Trump family and to the tremendous success it has had with its businesses, including Trump Hotels, while allowing for a clear distinction between our luxury and lifestyle brands.”

Trump hotels say that the change to “Scion” has nothing to do with the fact that their bookings are way down, claiming that the polls showing the decline are rigged.

Biggest cheer was for ‘repeal & replace Obamacare.’ Trump supporters really hate having a black president. Now they are going to have a woman. And not just any woman, but Hillary Clinton.

The board of the nation’s largest group of LGBT Republicans has voted to not endorse Donald Trump, in a contentious decision that did not reflect the preference of many of its chapters.

While the Log Cabin Republicans are united against Hillary Clinton, the group’s 14-member national board narrowly voted on Tuesday to “withhold” an endorsement of the Republican nominee, according to Gregory T. Angelo, the organization’s president.

It’s the second time the official national group has chosen not to back the GOP nominee — the prior time was 2004 for George W. Bush. The move reflects struggles throughout the Republican coalition, though for LGBT conservatives it’s been particularly wrenching. Trump’s rhetoric, they say, has been more pro-gay than any presidential nominee in history.

During an election year the annual college homecoming parade in our smallish west central Missouri city usually attracts a number of statewide candidates.

In a past parade Claire McCaskill (D) couldn’t make the parade and her sister walked in her stead. The sisters look alike if you squint really hard. All along the parade route people called out to her, “Claire!”

This morning at the parade we missed them all. The University of Missouri homecoming parade, 90 miles away, was scheduled at the same time. Instead, we had:

The only “change” will be the smaller and smaller national vote share they collect each year. If we could get two new decent SCOTUS judges appointed IMO after a few lawsuits we could overturn some gerrymandering and some VRA insults/oppression and then they would be forced to “change”.
    But until then.

He is also blaming the media, who are biased against conservatives, but Trump can’t resist the bait that the media puts out. He says he believes the polls, but they are that way because of media bias, quotes Nixon about conservatives always having to fight a two front war. But all in all a sane person.

Likewise it would take something pretty catastrophic to get me to vote for any republican candidate, because even if there was a sane candidate, say John Huntsman, I would not vote for him because his party is insane, and would influence his policies, all of which I disagree with.

    2 bye /ˈbaɪ/ noun

    Steeplejack (tablet)

    October 22, 2016 at 2:54 pm

    @WaterGirl:

Why would it ever be buy?!

It is a variant of by in its sense of “through” (“She entered by the front door”) or “in the direction of, or past” (“It went right by him”).

So the team gets to go by this game or round to the next one.

  112. 112.

    Bill E Pilgrim

    October 22, 2016 at 2:57 pm

@Steeplejack (tablet): “Byways” is a good surviving example of the usage. From the link that Origuy posted: “Origin: Mid 16th century (denoting a side issue or incidental matter): from by.”

So the highway is the main road, and the byway is a side street/through passage.

This is the first time I have noticed it being written and say that it is “bye” instead of “buy”. I do understand your reference to “by”, but that’s still not either “bye” or “buy”. Will go read the links now.

Last morning in Beijing – it is almost 3 am, we leave at about 6:30 am.

It’s been an amazing experience, despite the fact that our guide conned me into eating ox penis this past afternoon (I actually liked it). She got me to try cow stomach, grilled tendon (also good) and hot pot chicken heart, among other things. I did skip donkey, turtle, intestines, kidney and liver, to the guide’s great amusement.

Based on my observations, I really like Beijing, and despise white xenophobes within our own society. From what I could see from the extremely large number of Chinese families and sightseeing groups at the summer palace, Tiananmen Square and the Forbidden City, these are proud, happy, funny and prosperous people who really don’t seem to notice westerners as something unique, nor do they appear to give a second glance to the mixed couples I observed. Couples are publicly affectionate across all age groups, women across all age groups are stylish, and the men make an effort to dress nicely as well. A funny part is that women in their 40s and 50s are REALLY into amusing selfies.

The soldiers marching in the square AREN’T authoritarian automatons – they have a spring in their step, are lively and happy with their peers and the citizenry, and are prone to a lot of whimsical activity, including whistling tunes.

Even when we went deeply into the countryside, we weren’t stared at or treated any differently from what I saw at a rural gas station.

Most road signage appears bilingual, using Chinese symbols and American Standard English. A lot of business uses this dual signage as well. I saw a shitload of Fords, Buicks, Cadillacs, Lexuses, Kias, Audis (they like the A6, a lot), VWs, BMWs and Mercedes Benzes, and the highways are first rate, and numbered and lettered with English characters, using similar sign stock to US interstates.

There are 24,000,000 people in this city, and improbable and clunky as it may be, it works. Our xenophobes and Donald Trump can kiss my fucking ass on JYNA. Our dumbass fundamental case Christards can stand down and shut the fuck up about imposing their filthy bullshit faith on these people, who have it together in so many more ways than any bleating Christian could imagine.

I would have filled in the scantron bubble next to “Hillary Rodham Clinton/Timothy Michael Kaine” twice, but I had a fresh Sharpie and I didn’t want it to soak through and spoil the ballot. So I just stared at it awhile to savor. Then I carefully filled in the bubbles for every Democrat on offer, including all those running unopposed (a majority of races, it being northern New Mexico). And for all the socialistical bond proposals to benefit libraries and education and other elitist shit. I witnessed no ballot handling irregularities like those poor bastards in NC, thank goodness – though if there were it would probably benefit Dems, since our (very rural) county votes like 85% Democrat on a regular basis. Went about 57% for Bernie, in fact. Yes, we are weird, and like it that way. Go Hillary!
