Balloon Juice

Come for the politics, stay for the snark.

If you’re pissed about Biden’s speech, he was talking about you.

That’s my take and I am available for criticism at this time.

It is possible to do the right thing without the promise of a cookie.

Bogus polls are all they’ve got left. Let’s bury these fuckers at the polls a year from now.

You’re just a puppy masquerading as an old coot.

Fuck the extremist election deniers. What’s money for if not for keeping them out of office?

This blog will pay for itself.

No Justins, No Peace

We know you aren’t a Democrat but since you seem confused let me help you.

So many bastards, so little time.

Let’s not be the monsters we hate.

Come on, man.

Pelosi: “He either is stupid, or he thinks the rest of us are.” Why not both?

The arc of the moral universe doesn’t bend itself. it’s up to us.

Everything is totally normal and fine!!!

Authoritarian republicans are opposed to freedom for the rest of us.

Speaking of republicans, is there a way for a political party to declare intellectual bankruptcy?

We still have time to mess this up!

GOP baffled that ‘we don’t care if you die’ is not a winning slogan.

Is it negotiation when the other party actually wants to shoot the hostage?

DeSantis transforming Florida into 1930s Germany with gators and theme parks.

This isn’t Democrats spending madly. This is government catching up.

It’s all just conspiracy shit beamed down from the mothership.

There are consequences to being an arrogant, sullen prick.

Apart from working towards a Democratic landslide, what’s on the agenda for the day?

Shouldn’t the Benton and Beach story, where they promised to whisper in Trump’s ear for an illicit Chinese campaign donation get its own thread?

They came from Rand Paul’s campaign originally. I think this story needs to be worked over in depth.

Yet we will spend over $1.3 TRILLION (!) dollars for a vertical take-off stealth jet fighter that is a compromise of every good fighter;and exactly what will this protect us against? What enemy can even threaten us with our current over kill? Also, think about the cost of these couple thousand jets and what that would do to the debt (that thugs say matter) and exactly who profits from this boondoggle? The 0.001%, of course. They invest in the war making industry. ISIS isn’t the threat to us – our insane “defense” industry is our greatest threat along with the 0.001% that intend to milk all the rest of us until we all are living on crumbs.

I got the staples out of my abdomen yesterday and so far my healing looks good. I still have lifting restrictions for at least the next four weeks so my wife will be in respite care until then.

On the (brighter?) side, at least now I have a set of dates to work with instead of just going day-by-day, so I can plan ahead.

    Great cartoon, Anne.

Off topic, but I caught the last few 12+ minutes of PBO on Jimmy Kimmel’s show. He was wonderful, as usual. Talked with ease about his learning curve with media. It was funny and cool. He has an IPhone, but doesn’t call, take pictures, tweet or anything except e-mail, and then segued into his youngest daughter explaining Snapchat to him over a typical family dinner. Daughter video’d entire thing and sent to friends. Michelle and Mallea cracked up, then he got serious and talked about the future of media with regard to protecting citizens yet recognizing their rights to privacy and how balancing these issues would take a lot of work and discussion that would likely take a lot of serious time and effort. He shifted smoothly from light-hearted family life to briefly but coherently discuss this totally serious subject matter. As much as I like Hillary right now, I must say it is unlikely we will ever see anyone more suited to the Oval Office in our lifetimes.

Kicking myself for not catching the whole show-didn’t know he was going to be on it.

I watched so you don’t have to. The man who says he never ever supported Trump – who always said Trump would lose – is on his toes this moring

Joe says the race is tightening
Joe says turnout won’t be good for Hillary Clinton
    Joe says Colorado is close
Joe looks at one poll – and says it may be a 5pt race – ignoring the rest of the polls
Joe says people loath Hillary Clinton
Joe says Trump is within 5 points – he can get close
Ah – wikileaks – people were going to vote for Hillary – even though they didn’t like her but wiki will change this
Obama care costs are increasing – Joe & Mika are thrilled that people won’t be able to afford their health care. This will give the election to Trump (I could write a book on this – after SCOTUS removed some of the legislation & the GOP refused to fund other parts – but of course it was Obama’s fault)
    Mika looks constipated

Of course they do – new numbers were release yesterday showing poll results that the number of people voting FOR HRC not AGAINST DJT has been rising steadily the last few weeks and is now nearly 60% while DJT has dipped (only slightly mostly flat) as near 40% FOR as opposed to AGAINST HRC so ho in the morning HAS to repeat the tired beltway wisdom that supports his candidate

@?BillinGlendaleCA: I turned off as he started. Can’t take any more today – you will have to watch for me.

I don’t know all the details but a few health care issues
    1. The GOP refused to fund the unders/overs pools for health care providers who had issues during the first few years (folks who hadn’t had insurance catching up on everything!)
    2. GOP attacks on people being fined for not having health care has meant this has not to date happened. If there is no financial incentive young people will not take out insurance until they need it. Single Payer/insurance in most western countries that have same cover everyone.
    3. The medicaid expansion that SCOTUS made optional
    4. The non stop attacks by republicans – whose alternative is get sick and die

No doubt Richard can explain it with many more facts and detail – I find his posts fascinating in providing health insurance/health care insights

Republicans get whiny when people call them Nazis but they don’t generally threaten to sue, they get petulant when people call them racists but oh well, but calling them Trump supporters? That’s really crossing the line:

Republicans Threaten Lawsuits Over TV Ads Linking Them To Donald Trump

Trump is so terrible, these Republicans are essentially arguing, that tying them to him amounts to defamation.

Election night plan, as always, is to watch my side (MSNBC, kind of by default), and then, if things start to break as I am hoping, straight over to Fox News for the duration, culminating in that wondrous, sadly intoned Der Fuehrer ist Todt moment, followed by the whining parade of horribles a God-fearing nation will have to endure now that Killery will be seated on the Iron Throne. In 2012 I saw Rove’s meltdown in real time, and if that segment had lasted for 4 hours, I’d have had to call my doctor.

If all goes well this year, Nov 9 AM will witness Morning Joe denying he now or has ever heard of Donald Trump. I expect his sidekick to call in sick.

Someone posted Milbank’s anti-Scarborough piece in the Post from yesterday. He has a great burn buried in that one:

Consider Trump’s refusal at last week’s debate to say that he would respect the results of the election, a violation of the indispensable notion of the peaceful transfer of power.

But on MSNBC’s “Morning Joe” the next morning, the process journalists had a different view. “It’s the revenge of the elites,” Mark Halperin of Bloomberg Politics said. “Elites do not accept that that was an appropriate answer.”

Host Joe Scarborough agreed that the issue was only of concern to “people in newsrooms . . . with their soy lattes.”

Halperin (Harvard ’87) went on to say that “normal people won’t care about that answer.”

I got a call from an activist Democrat yesterday on “security” in polling places. He went in to early vote and there was some Trumpian in there ranting about rigged elections. He wants more security in the polling place (which is literally right next door to the sheriff’s office). There are TWO sheriff’s deputies on duty on weekdays for the whole county. They can’t take one and put him in the polling place. I hate this about the internet and national races, where people freak out and BELIEVE what someone like Trump is saying. Obviously everyone should be concerned about lunatics in polling places but there are always people ranting in any kind of government office and having a nervous breakdown just isn’t appropriate given the “threat” potential of the Trumpsters in THIS county. I wouldn’t mind having a metal detector at that location because the real issue is probably guns- that’s where one person can do a lot of damage- but the threat of heavily armed nutjobs is just a given now- it’s not specific to Trump and/or elections.

    @Patricia Kayden:

This is early vote- they go to the bd of elections to vote. In bigger cities there are several early vote locations. The “zone” you’re talking about applies to “electioneering”, not complaints to the Bd of Elections employees about whether they are rigging an election or not.

You have to be careful, too, because voting is a civil right and law enforcement presence could cut both ways. There’s discretion involved. So say we put one in there and he asked Trumpians who were just sort of grumbling to leave. He’s preventing them from voting (maybe). Also, apply it to OUR voters because many people are intimidated by law enforcement and some of that is completely justified. How would voters feel if there were a heavy (county) law enforcement presence in AA precincts in Philadelphia? They’d be wary of that.

When you go thru the metal detector at a court it’s manned because you have a right to go to court and some of this is discretionary. So the deputy will TAKE your pocket knife and hold it for you because if they didn’t and just refused entry you’d miss your hearing.

I just hate this kind of panic-driven response to lunatics and hacks. We can’t have both political Parties go insane.

I think an auto registration is a “government document” under Ohio’s ID law (I”m right too), so I want them to question that if it’s refused. Politely, we tell them to step away from the line and ask for the polling place manager, but we really don’t want to go overboard on “security” based on threats from Donald Trump because he doesn’t know the first thing about US process or rights or anything, really. One of the trumpet players was clowning around at their performance so the band teacher (who is a perfectionist and a little obsessive, although I like him a lot) lost his temper (after 3 subtle warnings- he points at the offending player which the kids know but is hard to detect if you’re watching) left his post there at the front, took the trumpet, sat down and played instead of the student. The student had to stand there for 3 minutes with half the town watching.

Cook Political Report Predicts Dems Will Win Up To Seven Senate Seats
    From TPM

The Cook Political Report reported Tuesday morning that Democrats will take back their majority and win five to seven Senate seats in November.

Cook Political Report’s Senate analyst Jennifer Duffy wrote that it looks like Republicans have finally reached the point where they can no longer simply run their own races. They are being drowned out by their presidential nominee Donald Trump.

Duffy wrote that ever since a tape surfaced of Trump discussing making unwanted sexual advances toward women, Republicans have been slowly sinking in polls across the country.

Democrats needed four seats to win control of the chamber assuming Hillary Clinton wins the White House (thanks to the vice president’s tie-breaker) or five without her.

“For much of the cycle, we have expected Democrats to score a net gain of between four and six seats. Since the release of the Access Hollywood tape, Senate Republicans have seen their fortunes dip, particularly in states like Florida, North Carolina, New Hampshire, Nevada and Pennsylvania where Clinton has established a lead,” Duffy wrote.

While Cook still maintains there are seven toss-up races: Nevada, North Carolina, New Hampshire, Florida, Missouri, Indiana, Pennsylvania. Duffy explained that historically, one party typically wins the majority of those on the map.

“While the 2016 election has broken every political science rule and trend, we’d be surprised if this becomes one of them,” she said.

I’m always interested in how harsh kids are. He’s a popular teacher so that may be part of it but the three 8th grade band members I spoke to after (my son and two of his friends) they completely approved. It passes their weird little honor code- it’s “fair” because he was warned. Kids are the “fair” police force. It has to be fair. Other than that, they’re flexible.

@OzarkHillbilly: They tried “all things to all services” in the 1960s with the TFX. Didn’t work then (the ruggedized-for-carrier-landings Navy version ended up too heavy to meet its operational specs) & the airframe kicked around the periphery of the USAF as the F-111. Probably won’t work now. Even if it did, the F-35’s useful life will end when someone builds an autonomous drone-controlling computer smart enough to dogfight, small enough to fit into an airframe smaller than a Tomahawk, able to survive & function in maneuvering that would kill a human pilot, & cheap enough to build a whole shitload of ’em for the cost of one Blightning Too. That’ll happen in the next 10 years.

    The Moar You Know

    October 25, 2016 at 10:42 am

So we had a big event at the middle school band concert.

@Kay: I was probably the only school band player in all four years I was in high school to actually go on and become a working musician. And my band teacher wasn’t the best, but he taught me a bunch of shit that, had I not known it, I never would have made it out of the starting gate. None of which had to do with music, everything which had to do with public behavior, comportment, professionalism. Never be late. Never talk shit about your band. Tell your bandmates when they fuck up – backstage. Don’t noodle when you’re not supposed to be playing (this is a hard one for a lot of people). Tune up BEFORE you hit the stage. Know the music in your head – sheet music can blow away. And the biggie is, of course, don’t sit there and fuck around in a public performance. That band teacher of yours did that kid an immense favor, and as unpleasant as it might have been for the kid, he won’t fuck around during a public performance again.

    ETA: I was drum section.

But I learned so much from the guy about preparation and resilience and a love of the beauty that comes from precise teamwork. (Baritone horn, Euphonium, Bombardino de Gamba).

Other issue is they want one one fighter for all services, that’s why all the crazy requiments for VSTOL, stealth and long range. See the F-111 and the F-4 for a previous example in this.

    Good news everyone!

    From HuffPo:

An 81 percent majority of Americans say they wish this election were over, according to a new HuffPost/YouGov poll, with just 12 percent saying they’re enjoying watching things play out. More than three-quarters of people in both parties say they’re ready to move on.

Your mileage may vary, and I can tell you that several of my esteemed Slate colleagues do not understand what I’m on about right now, but: 75 percent of Republicans being “ready to move on” does not read to me like a population primed for civil unrest. (And when I say “civil unrest” I mean riots in multiple cities, organized armed protest, etc.) It reads to me like a population that is ready to sublimate its feelings about this election into apathetic gridlock—aka our national status quo.

Well, lack of horrible news is practically good news.
