I need a break, how about you?
Bixby is over the drama:
Bailey is settling in nicely:
I have a hundred pieces of candy and no takers. Everyone I’ve talked to in my circle is having the same low turnout.
Let’s try and fill this thread with good thoughts….
Baud
Good thoughts.
Jim, Foolish Literalist
are they getting along? didn’t you say last week they were still a little testy with each other?
TheMightyTrowel
Since this is a no drama good news thread: 3 hours ago I learned that I was just awarded a very prestigious 3 year fellowship for early career researchers (Aus govt funded) which means I have 3 years of pure research ahead of me, no teaching or admin except what I want to do. Even better: 2 of the most awesome women in my department and 3 of my favourite women elsewhere in my university also were awarded these fellowships. What a great day!
Singing Truth to Power
I don’t like to speak ill of small children, but I had one stinkin’ trick-or-treater tonight. One.
dmsilev
@TheMightyTrowel: Woo! Congratulations!
JPL
@Baud: Although good thoughts can mean various things, are your fingers crossed anyway?
TaMara (HFG)
@Jim, Foolish Literalist: They love each other. Most of my issues have been with playing too rough. They forget they are big and have sharp teeth. Bixby’s neck looks like he’s had a run in with Drusilla.
We have had some food aggression, but I nipped that in the bud pretty quickly – I spend a great deal of time during meals taking their dishes away from them, having them sit, and returning the dishes to them. But to be safe, I still feed them separately.
Major Major Major Major
@TheMightyTrowel: that’s great! Congratulations!
Anoniminous
@TheMightyTrowel:
Congratulations.
dmsilev
@Singing Truth to Power: Look at it this way: Now you have all the candy for yourself. You did buy stuff that you like to eat, I trust?
(I’m in the same boat. I’ll dispose of the excess at work tomorrow; graduate students eat _anything_)
TaMara (HFG)
@TheMightyTrowel: That’s what I’m talking about!! Congrats!!
Baud
@TheMightyTrowel: Congrats!

Those are two of the most photogenic dogs I’ve ever seen. So freaking beautiful.
ETA: And the Bears are just humiliating the Vikings, which I assume makes folks in Chicago happy. Me, not so much.
Iowa Old Lady
@TheMightyTrowel: Excellent! Congratulations!
I just closed up shop for trick or treaters. We had low turnout tonight too. I have a ton of leftover candy. A friend of mine once suggested setting up a business called Candy-B-Gone. For a fee, he’d come to your house and take away the leftover candy.
TaMara (HFG)
BTW, I have a bunch more photos and some good video, I just need a moment to put it all together. I also have three recipes and photos I need to put together. Also, I need to finish painting the front door, the bathroom and the laundry room…but I am making progress on all things. Photos are on the computer now, paint is purchased…downloading videos now.

I bought two boxes of full size candy bars at Costco last week. We had 5 kids show up. Our neighborhood is in the process of turning over from older, kids out of the house, families to younger families and I wanted to encourage kids to come, next year if not this one.
The leftovers, or what Hubby doesn’t take in to the office tomorrow, will go in my precinct box for next Tuesday. We have elections every year in Virginia, so school is always closed and parents bring their kids to the polls.
Glad to see the dogs are settling in and getting along with each other.
MikeBoyScout
Save the children!
Turn the lights off and eat all the candy yourself!
kathy cole
@TheMightyTrowel: congratulations!!
Shana
@Iowa Old Lady: Let me add my congrats to Mighty Trowel.
I learned last week at my Weight Watchers meeting that they will take your leftover Halloween candy and pass it along to a homeless shelter for the kids who are living there or some other similar group. Check your area for something.

You’re doing it all wrong:
They only come if they fear you. Or maybe you need body tattoos.
a hip hop artist from Idaho (fka Bella Q)
@TheMightyTrowel: Yay you!! Congratulations.
Singing Truth to Power
@dmsilev: Do blue M&Ms give you cancer or make you sterile? I should have gotten Reese’s Peanut Butter Cups – at least there is a bit of protein in them.
PhoenixRising
@debit: All Danes are beautiful. And it almost offsets the aesthetics from their farts, which can clear an outdoor living space. Both seem to be breed characteristics.
In good thoughts:
Going to Phoenix in 72 hours. GOYAKOD.
If there is a Juicer who wants to get me out of staying with my least favorite cousin Thurs-Sun afternoon, speak now. Please. I’m a lot less obnoxious in person, particularly after knocking on 100 doors and greeting the occupants in Spanish and English.
Kristine
@TheMightyTrowel: Congratulations!!
Singing Truth to Power
Abrupt change of topic: how do you squeeze 650,000 emails into a laptop?
TaMara (HFG)
@Shana: That is a great idea. The shelter is not far from here, I’ll check tomorrow.
Singing Truth to Power
@PhoenixRising: Re staying with your least favorite cousin, do you know anyone who would loan you a gassy Dane?
Adam L Silverman
@TheMightyTrowel: Congratulations!!!!
Now you have the funding to bring me over there to give a talk on how to protect heritage sites in combat zones! See we all win…//
SiubhanDuinne
@TheMightyTrowel:
Great news! Makes me so happy to read stuff like this in the midst of all our political drama. Big congratulations to you and your colleagues!
Can you tell us a little about what you plan to do with your research fellowship?
a hip hop artist from Idaho (fka Bella Q)
@srv: I thought that was an annual thing they did for PR; I swear I’ve read about it before. That or I had one hella prescient and specific hallucination. Of which there’s a non zero possibility, of course.
Iowa Old Lady
@Shana: The food bank will take it too. I can drop that off tomorrow. I might have to save a few though.
PhoenixRising
@Singing Truth to Power: OMG that is what I’ve been trying to figure out all damn day: Are these emails just links to files that Huma printed out for her boss on her home printer? Or…I mean, even then, quite a sizable hard drive. (‘That’s what she said!’-Anthony Weiner)
Related: This claim that they need more than 90 minutes to exclude matches and see what’s new and more connected to Huma’s job than Anthony’s junk? Bull. There is software that does exactly and only that, for discovery, like that which was avoided by Trump’s business by shredding and deleting. It’s fast and admissable by federal courts. It’s not like they have to look through all those emails by hand.
PhoenixRising
@Singing Truth to Power: I own one, and apparently so does my least favorite cousin. Just learned this from another cousin.
MomSense
@TheMightyTrowel:
Congratulations! ?

@TheMightyTrowel: well done, you.

It’s interesting to me that season 2 of Fargo got barely a mention, it’s incredible.

I’m starting the big marketing push for Becoming Phoebe. Yes, it’s nine months since I released it, but that doesn’t matter as much with a book. I’ve submitted it for more awards, and I’m looking to hire a publicist. I’m also looking at places that put together book blog tours.
TheMightyTrowel
Thanks all :-D Still buzzing – really really didn’t expect to get this as the project is social theory driven with no lasers (anathema in Australian archaeology circles) and the fieldwork is in Europe.
@SiubhanDuinne: Essentially I’m continuing with my ongoing research examining the social processes of innovation and conservatism – why people do new things/adopt or invent new technologies in some places and why they don’t in others. the primary aim of these project is to look at a notoriously conservative region/period (essentially 2000 years of people ignoring the Romans and pretending they’re still in the bronze age) and examine how that’s not ‘being backwards’ it’s ‘being resilient and reacting to local social and economic contexts’. Innovation is my big research area – working on a major monograph on the subject at the moment and this fellowship will help me finish it in a timely manner. The fieldwork associated is also stuff that’s ongoing – essentially, this just lets me have money to dig the holes I want to dig. So Adam you’re SoaL because the money is to take me to europe (and to the bottom of muddy holes) not to bring anyone over :( :(
Adam L Silverman
@TheMightyTrowel: We’ll deal with you later…//
ETA: I’ll shoot you an email sometime tomorrow, I have some thoughts for you based on my work rooted in social learning theory.

@Adam L Silverman: :-P

@TheMightyTrowel: Congratulations. This isn’t your first honor, as I recall! I don’t remember the details, though. We have a lot of talent here at Balloon Juice.
PhoenixRising
@TheMightyTrowel: I’ve always assumed that your username had to do with field archaeology but this is too good to be true. Congrats and have fun down in the holes!

I know this is not a football thread but I just have to say that I don’t think I can watch this game sober. What the fuck happened to my Vikings? Oh, yeah, right. The same thing that always happens when it looks like they might have a decent season, they play some amazing football and THEN THEY RIP YOUR HEART OUT AND STOMP IT INTO LITTLE BITS AND THEN PEE ON THE BITS.
WaterGirl
@Shana: I’m tired, my eyes are tired, and I read that as “we have erections every year” and did a double-take.
Miss Bianca
Just had my first creepy clown sighting IRL. Of course, it is Halloween…
But truly, this person must be brave or reckless – or feeling protected by the Everything Goes protocol of All Hallows. Because in rural CO, *we* are the ones with firearms, chainsaws, and axes at our disposal…

More seriously, I’ll shoot you an email sometime tomorrow, I have some thoughts for you based on my work rooted in social learning theory.

@JCJ: My current favorite is dogs in Halloween costumes.

@Singing Truth to Power: should be between 9 and 18 GB. (Most emails are between 15 and 25 kb.) (Autocorrect really wants kb to be KGB, which is an unfortunate irony at the moment.) Not impossible. Per my gmail storage on my primary gmail account, I have about 6.5GB used, about 300K messages, over 12 years. (I got my account when it was still a very limited beta, my oldest message still extant is from May 08, 2004, so back when gmail invites were still very rare.) Some of the excessive size of my specific box is that from 2005-2007, I used my email address as a documents backup service, so I have multiple copies of version controlled, 100K word manuscripts sitting in storage, which run around 100mb each.
I receive about 150 messages a day on that account, delete about 145. That’s not including the spam that I never see.

@Tissue Thin Pseudonym: More exciting news, that’s great!

Those are damned gorgeous doggies. Having been owned by Newfoundlands for many years, I appreciate a canine with some heft & dignity…

@TaMara:
Has Suzanne weighed in on your furniture yet?
TheMightyTrowel
@Adam L Silverman: that would be awesome and I would definitely appreciate it! A big part of what I’m trying to do is short circuit some of the delightfully sciencey but ultimately entirely circular evolutionary modelling of innovation and knowledge transmission :)
Steeplejack (tablet)
@TheMightyTrowel:
Congratulations!
(Mumble, mumble, monstrous regiment of women, cough.)
TaMara (HFG)
@Steeplejack (tablet): Oh god I hope not….been holding off on new couches until we are past the puppy stage.

BIG doggies, chillaxin’. Nothing better.
Handing out candy (moochers!), drinking Belgian-style ale and filling out my ginormous CA ballot, finally having sussed out the eleventyseven propositions. When my kid returns she gets to fill in the bubbles for president, senator and representative–all women. In four years she’ll have a ballot of her own. Watch out!

@TaMara (HFG):
Your couches, at least the visible parts, look fine.

Bixby reminds me of a previous neighbors dane, who also had a pug. The two of them got along fine but the pug was the aggressor, such as he could be and the dane was the love bunny. Comical as all get out. The dane was around 3 ft at the shoulders. Seemed rather large, even for a dane.
OldDave
I’m still waiting to hear the 650,000 emails really means 650 kbytes of email.
BruceFromOhio
@TheMightyTrowel: Outstanding, absolutely splendid! May the tree of knowledge grow ever taller for your efforts.
BruceFromOhio
@Singing Truth to Power: If you are MrsFromOhio, never delete anything in 6 years of Thunderbird operation. Transferring from old laptop to new laptop was an overnight sensation for the size of the Gaia-damned mail file.
TaMara (HFG)
@Ruckus: Bixby is 34 at the shoulder, my tallest Dane was 36 and I’m pretty certain Bailey is going to be taller than Bixby, though more delicately framed. My neighbors had a Dane who was easily 40 at the shoulders and for sure the tallest Dane I had ever seen. He tipped the scales at 210 lbs.
BruceFromOhio
@debit: Are they 0-8? No? Then praise your purple pee-bits, they aren’t that other CLE team that no one mentions.

@TheMightyTrowel: Congratulations! Holes in Europe sound very restful right now.

Met a pup whose father holds the “world’s tallest” title. This fella, Bentley. Had to readjust my dog size scale after that.

In my area I think they’ve all been trick or teated out. There have been parties and “Trunk or Treating” since Friday, crowned by the big downtown city/business “Trunk or Treat”. “Trunk or Treating” by the way is filling a street or parking lot with cars to give the treats out from the trunk. The Trunkers usually dress up. It’s all chicken s*^%t if you asked me. Helicopter parents indeed.
I also find it extremely amusing that at least 3 different churches had these, with at last one on Sunday.
Jay Noble
@Iowa Old Lady: See if you have any dentists nearby who do candy buy backs.
rikyrah
The dogs look so cute ???

Love the photos of your beautiful dogs. They’d translate nicely into paintings. Fourteen Trick or Treaters. Candy leftover. My porch looked pretty good, though, with ghouls, carved pumpkins, and a skeletal rat.

@TaMara (HFG):
I am going from recollection as I haven’t see him since 2012 when his owner moved to HI. He is though the biggest dane that I’ve ever seen in person. He is a huge dog, He slept on a human sized bed and hung off of it, like someone 6’10” does off a regular sized bed. I’ll just leave it at that.

Well I live in DC and ran out at 8 after about 2 hours. They were still going strong until about 9:30 ish based on the noises I heard.

We give out quarters. Saves having to worry about giving the kid with peanut allergy a snickers or something. Also they are thrilled with money. We gave out between $40-50 this year. We had some repeat customers.
.
@TaMara (HFG): They are awesome. Don’t know what you’re going to do if they stay in the puppy wrestling stage for years tho. My daughter has whippets and Aussie cattle dogs. She has decided that if her couch gets too ratty, pitch it and get another used one.
@TheMightyTrowel: Congrats! Enjoy your three years of research.
