Balloon Juice

Come for the politics, stay for the snark.

The worst democrat is better than the best republican.

Why is it so hard for them to condemn hate?

Republican obstruction dressed up as bipartisanship. Again.

Putin must be throwing ketchup at the walls.

The poor and middle-class pay taxes, the rich pay accountants, the wealthy pay politicians.

Impressively dumb. Congratulations.

Come for the politics, stay for the snark.

DeSantis transforms Florida into 1930s Germany with gators and theme parks.

Spilling the end game before they can coat it in frankl luntz-approved dogwhistles.

The arc of history bends toward the same old fuckery.

After roe, women are no longer free.

Just because you believe it, that doesn’t make it true.

When do the post office & the dmv weigh in on the wuhan virus?

I really should read my own blog.

Historically it was a little unusual for the president to be an incoherent babbling moron.

Ah, the different things are different argument.

Republicans in disarray!

The GOP is a fucking disgrace.

Tick tock motherfuckers!

Speaking of republicans, is there a way for a political party to declare intellectual bankruptcy?

Authoritarian republicans are opposed to freedom for the rest of us.

Teach a man to fish, and he’ll sit in a boat all day drinking beer.

I see no possible difficulties whatsoever with this fool-proof plan.

Thanks for reminding me that Van Jones needs to be slapped.

Random question: is there a winter holiday in India that falls around the same time as Christmas/Hanukkah? We’re trying to be neutral for our office holiday party, but to me “being neutral” means at least attempting to include a bit from everyone. I’m going to ask my coworker if he has a preference, but I don’t want to sound as 100 percent ignorant as I actually am.

(The coworker in question is originally Canadian, so I don’t know what kind of Northern abominations he would want to include from that side of his background. I guess we could throw a moose into the background of our Space Luau.)

    Florida Update.

So where are we today, besides close?

Well we say almost 400K votes, thanks to a slight pick-up of both vote by mail returns & in-person voting. We also saw in-person overtake VBM as we push towards the 4.5m vote mark & almost to 50% of likely turnout. I think we are roughly 48% to goal turnout. Overall, the day was a push, with Republicans winning VBM by 2K, and Dems winning the in-person early by a few hundred votes.

    Total Ballots cast: 4,466,624

    Total Vote By Mail: 2,168,750(48.4%)
    Total Early Vote: 2,297,874 (51.6%)

    Republicans: 1,798,954 (40.3%)
    Democrats: 1,781,498 (39.9%)
    NPA: 886,172 (19.8%)

    Total Margin: GOP +0.39%

And there are still 1,173,799 vote-by-mail ballots sitting out there, and yes, Democrats have more outstanding mail in ballots than Republicans. Unreturned vote-by-mail ballots remains the same as yesterday, looking like this: 41D-35R-24NPA, meaning 82,541 more Democrats have ballots sliding between the couch cushions.

Much was made about the Politico story about black turnout in Florida. I’m not going to use my space to push back or spout talking points, rather to provide context.

Comparing turnout to 2012 or 2008 is like comparing something to the 96 Bulls. Some things are special, like the historical election of the first black President & his re-election. As a result in 2012, the share of African American & Caribbean voters actually exceeded their voter registration share. That’s not normal, and shouldn’t be expected.

What I do expect is two things: black vote in Florida to approach its share of registration (13.9) and total diversity to be higher than 12. Both of those things make a HRC win path much cleaner.

When in person early vote began, which is always far more white & far older than the population at large, black voters made up 7-8% of turnout. That number has steadily climbed to 11.7%, as black voters make up around 15% of in-person early voters. It probably is now 12, though I won’t know until the afternoon. Frankly at 12, we can win, but as in-person early overtakes vote by mail, that number should grow to 13. In fact, if just the remaining likely black voters vote, we get right around that number, and HRC has been turning out low propensity voters.

So yes, it’s an issue that the campaign should worry about, and yes, it’s one that deserves attention, but no, all is not lost.

Secondly, Hispanics are absolutely surging. Almost 14% of the electorate, more than half of Hispanic Dems (51%) and Hispanic NPA (57%) are low propensity, which has led the Dems to a 90k voter lead with unlikely voters. Now 31% of Dem voters are low propensity, compared to 24% of Republicans. It’s higher than both with NPAs.

Progressives that aren’t otherwise hampered by a natural Cubs handicap need to be rooting for the Tribe tonight. It’s actually probably a non-trivial Ohio GOTV issue. I guarantee you do not want a 200,000 people in the Cleveland suburbs feeling bitter and depressed and hopeless on Tuesday, I think we know where those kind of people tend to wander. And with like a 15-3 disparity in the incorrect game 5 calls going against them, they’re going to be more open to messages about things being rigged too.

You can feel good about it as a progressive too. There’s the fact that the Cubs are basically a superteam with double the payroll now and more to come, while the Tribe is scrimping by squeaking into a small-market window of competitiveness that probably slams shut in 2 years. Also the Tribe is getting by on 1 good starting pitcher, missing 2&3 due to horrible luck, and also missing their best all-around player Brantley (who’s career is likely over, BTW.) Yes, there is the Red Sambo issue, but are they more or less likely to get that drunken tattoo removed after losing? Less. “Keep the Chief” is largely a revanchist movement and revanchist movements thrive on losing. Block C for the win tonight, or deal with president Trump next Wednesday, that’s the choice you are making.

What about Serenity? A little light on the romance, maybe, but still …

And heavy on the neo-Confederate fantasy, with what the North being both the evil industralists and the slave owners.

Jeffrey Epstein is the big news. Considering the right wing attacks on Clinton associates, the Epstein connection should have legs. It may not but it should. And considering the creepy things that Trump has been reported to have said about Ivanka, the underage sex allegations don’t surprise me.

Two more votes banked for our Madam President, though my son the comedian caused a bit of a kerfluffle when he walked into the polling place and loudly asked if “this was the line to vote for Trump”.

It was nice to see moms with their little girls, explaining about the election and (I assume) showing them the vote for the first woman likely to become president. These little girls will remember this day.

Bloom is a fucking idiot. Her grandstanding for publicity (still frowned on by ethical canon) exposed her client AND shattered some credibility.

I am so freaking tired of these FBI leaks. Why can’t the agency be shut down until next Wednesday morning? Leaking the name of the poor girl who was Weiner’s sexting target is just flat beyond the pale.

I still remember how angry I was back in 1994 that the WaPo waited until after the election to reveal some of Glendening’s shenanigans with the Prince George’s County police. I didn’t want Sauerbrey to win, either, but they could probably have released the info in August with little impact on the election. (IIRC it wasn’t illegal, just not the right thing to do.)

@satby: When I went to early voting, I actually had the longest wait of my life. 2 people were in front of me, a mother and daughter voting together.

@schrodinger’s cat: These all hit the Sci-Fi, Romance pretty well. If you count the nefarious secret governmental agencies, they hit the Espionage at least lightly.

A little off-topic here, but bear with me: I have been reading Hillary’s e-mails on Wikileaks the past few days. And let me tell you – there is NOTHING there. Nothing. I am convinced not one of these slimy Republican bastards (Trump, Pence, et al) has read a single one of Hillary’s e-mails, because if they did, they would realize this phony “scandal” doesn’t amount to a popcorn fart. Here is an example. The next time your crazy conservative uncle starts ranting about what a horrible scandal this is (Worse than Watergate!)’ ask the piece of shit if he has read any of them. Even. One.
